In this thought-provoking conversation, Dan Barker, a former evangelical preacher turned prominent atheist and co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, explains the current state of separation of Church and State, the influence of Catholicism on the Supreme Court, and the ongoing debates surrounding public education and religious symbols. Barker also discusses the legal challenges tackled by his organization, and introduces “Contraduction,” a new philosophical concept that reexamines how beliefs and arguments can reverse in order and meaning. Plus, the moral implications of belief systems and the fine-tuning argument for the existence of God, the nature of nothingness, and free will. Dan Barker is co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, co-host of Freethought Radio, and co-founder of The Clergy Project. He worked 19 years as an evangelical minister and is a member of the Lenape (Delaware) tribe of American Indians. His new book is Contraduction.
This week on Regional Roundup, we hear about the intense Logan to Jackson bike race, a vintage car rally in Colorado, and an Indigenous art exhibit inspired by Star Wars. Plus, we hear from the best-selling author Bonnie Garmus during her visit to Colorado to accept the Freedom from Religion Foundation award. To finish up, we have a discussion with a former University of Colorado professor about the exciting future of doing science on the moon.
Our guest was enjoying a productive career as a physics professor at Ball State University when the letter from a militant atheist arrived and all hell broke loose. The conflict spilled first onto the pages of the local newspaper, and then into the national news. The atheist attack included threats from the Freedom from Religion Foundation, which targeted Hedin after learning his Boundaries of Science course exposed students to an evidence-based case for design and purpose in cosmology, physics, and biochemistry. Join us to hear the dramatic story of the atheist campaign to cancel Hedin's course, the evidence the atheists tried to bury, and discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of the nature and origin of matter, space, and even time itself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New law requires all Louisiana public school classrooms to display the Ten CommandmentsAP News, By Sara Cline, on June 19, 2024https://apnews.com/article/louisiana-ten-commandments-displayed-classrooms-571a2447906f7bbd5a166d53db005a62In a foolish move that has reignited the perennial debate between church and state, Louisiana has mandated that the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public school classroom. Governor Jeff Landry hails this decision as a respectful nod to one of history's original lawmakers, Moses, but the reaction has been far from unanimous. Opponents are already preparing for what promises to be a fierce constitutional showdown. This controversial legislation brings to the forefront a critical question: are we witnessing a pivotal moment in history or merely another episode of church versus state drama? The decision has deep roots in a complex interplay of politics, religion, and education. Governor Landry and the bill's co-author, Lauren Ventril, argue that the Ten Commandments are a fundamental historical document. However, critics see this as an insidious attempt to impose religious beliefs on a diverse student population. They predict that the Supreme Court, which ruled a similar Kentucky law unconstitutional in 1980, will ultimately strike down this law as well. Yet, the current Supreme Court's composition and recent decisions suggest a nuanced and unpredictable battle ahead.Public reaction varies significantly, reflecting broader societal divisions. Supporters of the law believe it reinforces moral values and historical awareness. Opponents, however, argue that it undermines the principle of separation of church and state, making non-Christian students feel marginalized and unsafe. Organizations like the ACLU and the Freedom from Religion Foundation are gearing up to challenge this law, emphasizing the potential for significant constitutional implications. The law's passage in Louisiana might also embolden other states to propose similar legislation. Historically, such bills have failed, but the current polarized political climate could see a resurgence of efforts to integrate religious symbols into public spaces. The potential ripple effects are vast, potentially transforming how public education is perceived in terms of inclusivity and neutrality.Beyond the legal battles, there are practical concerns. Will teachers be required to interpret these religious texts, and if so, how? How will schools handle objections from students and parents of various faiths? And what precedent does this set for other religious or ideological displays in public schools? As we delve deeper into this issue, it is essential to consider the broader implications. This law raises questions about religious freedom, the role of education, and the future of public spaces as inclusive environments. The coming months will likely see a flurry of legal challenges, public debates, and possibly even more states attempting similar legislative maneuvers. #SeparationOfChurchAndState #PublicSchools #TenCommandments The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.26.1 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Jimmy Jr., and Cindy PlazaBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
In the latest episode of the Cross Examiner podcast, we delve into a contentious legal battle that has significant implications for the separation of church and state in the United States. Our host, an attorney and atheist, interviews Sam Grover, Senior Counsel for Litigation at the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), to discuss their lawsuit challenging Louisiana's newly enacted law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom. The episode opens with a strong statement from the host, highlighting the alarming rise of Christian nationalism and the misinformation fueling it. This sets the stage for a deep dive into the legal intricacies of the case. Sam Grover, who has been with FFRF for over a decade, provides a comprehensive overview of the coalition formed to challenge the law. This coalition includes heavyweights like the ACLU, ACLU of Louisiana, and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, along with the law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, which is offering pro bono services.Grover explains the mechanics of how such a coalition operates, from vetting potential plaintiffs to drafting the complaint. He emphasizes the overwhelming response from Louisiana residents who are concerned about the law's implications, highlighting that the coalition's plaintiffs include not just atheists and agnostics but also Christians and members of minority religions. One of the most compelling parts of the episode is the discussion about the real-world implications for plaintiffs. Grover recounts the harassment and threats faced by individuals who stand up against such unconstitutional laws, emphasizing the bravery of the plaintiffs involved in this case. The discussion then shifts to the legal arguments against the law. Grover breaks down the claims under the First Amendment's Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause. He argues that the Louisiana law is a blatant constitutional violation, citing the Supreme Court's precedent in Stone v. Graham, which struck down a similar law in Kentucky in 1980. Despite the Supreme Court's recent shift away from the Lemon test, which was used in Stone v. Graham, Grover remains confident that the coercive nature of the law will render it unconstitutional. The episode also touches on the broader implications of the Supreme Court's recent decisions, particularly the move towards a "history and tradition" test for Establishment Clause cases. Grover expresses concern about this shift but remains hopeful that the clear lack of historical precedent for such a law in public schools will work in their favor. The interview concludes with a call to action for listeners to support FFRF and other organizations fighting for the separation of church and state. Grover encourages listeners to become members, highlighting the importance of collective action in safeguarding constitutional rights. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in constitutional law, religious freedom, and the ongoing battle against Christian nationalism. Grover's insights provide a clear understanding of the stakes involved and the legal strategies being employed to protect the First Amendment.Introduction 00:00:00Interview with Sam Grover 00:02:00Background on FFRF and Legal Career 00:04:00Details of the Louisiana Case 00:10:00Legal Strategies and Challenges 00:20:00Historical Context and Legal Precedents 00:30:00Potential Outcomes and Future Implications 00:45:00Closing Remarks 00:58:00For more information about the Freedom from Religion Foundation and to support their efforts, visit their website at https://www.ffrf.org. Ron Reagan, the son of former President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, grew up in Los Angeles and Sacramento while his father served as Governor of California from 1967-1975. After a brief career as a classical ballet dancer, Ron Reagan has spent the past 40 years as a correspondent, host and political commentator in television and radio, chiefly for MSNBC and Air America. He has written for many publications — Esquire, Newsweek, The New Yorker and Playboy among them — and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, My Father at 100. He is a board member of the Freedom from Religion Foundation and has spoken frequently in support of the separation of church and state. Ron and his Italian wife, Federica, divide their time between Seattle and Tuscany.Adam sits down with Ron for a deeply personal interview with the son of the 40th president to everything from growing up as a Reagan, differing with his father on politics, being an atheist, and writing a poignant memoir about his father's formative years called “My Father at 100,” which was published in 2011. Of course, Adam and Ron also discuss how the party of sunny optimistic Ronald Regan could devolve into a den of lies, autocracy and a disdain for the rule of law in the thrall to Donald Trump. Thanks for helping us save democracy one episode at a time! Listen to LifeWise Academy Founder and CEO Joel Penton explain how this program is making a positive impact in communities across the country and what First Liberty is doing to make sure that it's protected from attacks.

It's Wednesday, November 22nd, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed pastor, kidnapped wife Suspected Muslim militants killed a pastor in Nigeria last Friday and kidnapped his wife. Joshua Amako Maraya was the pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All in Kaduna State. He leaves behind his wife and seven children. Thankfully, his wife was released this week. One of his church members told International Christian Concern, “The Fulani militants killed Reverend Amako Maraya. He is my pastor. Last Sunday before he was killed, he preached about forgiveness.” International Christian Concern ranks Nigeria as the worst country in the world for Christians in the year 2023, according to their recently released persecutors report. Germans are losing their faith in God Once the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation, Germany is losing its faith in God. The Evangelical Church in Germany released its latest survey on the country's religious views. Over 70 years ago, about 90% of Germans believed in God. Now, that number is 50%, and only 20% have a Biblical understanding. In Revelation 2:4-5, Jesus says, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” People leaving United Methodist Church over homosexuality In the U.S., more churches are leaving the United Methodist Church (UMC). This comes as the denomination has become more accepting of people living sexually perverted lifestyles. A total of 7,286 churches have now disaffiliated from the UMC since 2019. Over 5,000 of those departures occurred this year alone. In the latest move, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to allow 261 congregations to leave the denomination on Saturday. Georgia high school fired coach over baptisms Speaking of Georgia, a high school in the state fired their head football coach after he held a baptism for his players. Coach Isaac Ferrell held the ceremony after practice on October 23rd with a local pastor. Twenty players were baptized. Listen to this soundbite of two of the baptisms. FERRELL: “I baptize you now, my brother, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (sound of water and cheering) FERRELL: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (clapping) Last week, Tattnall County School District announced Ferrell would no longer be head football coach. The decision came after the Freedom from Religion Foundation sent a letter of complaint to the district. However, the district claims they are firing Ferrell for other reasons. Indiana's abortions dropped dramatically after new ban The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute reports abortions in Indiana dropped significantly after the state's 10-week abortion ban went into effect in August. The group noted, “Guttmacher's latest data show that this total ban resulted in an estimated zero abortions provided within the formal health care system in Indiana for the month of August, compared with almost 700 abortions in July.” States like Kentucky and North Carolina have seen similar abortion declines after passing abortion bans and restrictions in those states. Colorado failed to keep Trump off presidential ballot The latest attempt to keep Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballot failed in Colorado last week. Judges are rejecting attempts to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to keep Trump from running. The section forbids someone “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. The lawsuits accuse Trump of insurrection for his actions on January 6, 2021. Attempts to keep him off the ballot have also failed in Minnesota and Michigan. Meanwhile, the former president now has a 7-point lead over President Joe Biden. The latest Messenger/HarrisX poll found Trump beating Biden 47% to 40% in a head-to-head matchup. Christian NBA star sanctioned shoe with Bible verses And finally, a Christian NBA star launched the first basketball shoe with visible Bible verses last week. Jonathan Isaac plays for the Orlando Magic team. He gained cultural attention during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement by being one of the few NBA players to stand during the national anthem. He has used the platform to share his Christian values. Now, Isaac is launching the Judah 1 shoe as part of his new clothing brand dedicated to giving people the freedom to wear their values in their clothing. ISAAC: “Understanding that Christ is with me and I'm never alone gives me the strength to live bold. I can't wait to lace ‘em up. I'll be saying to myself Second Corinthians 4:9. It says, ‘Persecuted but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed.' And I'll walk on that court.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, November 22nd in the year of our Lord 2023. Folks, I am tired of the Freedom From Religion crowd LYING to America about our religious freedom. Today I am going to SHRED their arguments and show how you can use Separation of C&S to argue FOR Religious speech. A couple weeks ago, Auburn's head football coach, Hugh Freeze, helped baptize about 200 students on the spur of the moment. It was completely voluntary. But immediately, the Freedom from Religion Foundation, from way up in Madison, Wisconsin, cried foul. Let me quickly unpack this for you and then I want to PLAY and SHRED 3 clips for you from atheist podcaster, Kyle Kulinski. Coach Freeze should be applauded and supported for his authenticity. He loves Jesus. He loves the students, and it shows. Jesus said we should shine our light. That's all Coach Freeze was doing. In a day when most Christians hide their light, folks, this guy's an inspiration. My dad, Bill Bright, once said, “The average Christian risks offending God, for fear of offending man.” Not coach Freeze. There are a lot of folks in addition to Kyle and FFRF that are trying to keep you from shining your light…. We should all seek to be more like Coach Freeze and start shining our light where God has planted us. Not only is the future of our country at stake, but the eternal souls of our neighbors are at stake. Do you love your neighbors enough to take the risk to shine the light of Jesus in the darkness? Coach Freeze, you're now one of my heroes. So, this is for you from a CU fan. War Eagle! Go God! God IS the Issue—in every issue. Help us get the word out. Like, Share and Subscribe to this podcast.
In this episode, Phil and Susie talk with Caitlin, owner of Atheist Aesthetic. Caitlin is from Texas and she shares a lot of wisdom about her journey away from faith, her thoughts on being an "angry atheist" and how she moved forward from that stage to being happy, fulfilled, and confident in who she is and how she can live a good and moral life without the overwatch of a deity. She is passionate about many non-profit organizations and she shares a ton of good resources for anyone on a path of questioning their belief system. Lots of links below for your reference. When we give up on our students, especially those in public schools, we relinquish our collective responsibility as stewards of a thriving democracy. After all, knowledge is power. And in a democracy, knowledge is also a birthright. Defunding our public schools, demonizing public school teachers, diverting public funding to private and religious institutions, deprives our kids — soon to be adults — of that power, and assigns to them less than first-class citizenship. To some highly-motivated (and well-funded) members of American society, that's precisely what would make America great again. Thus, from local school boards to the highest court in the land, public education is under attack. What's happening on the ground and in the courts, and what can we all do moving forward, to prevent a theocratic takeover of our secular schools? In our special Back To School episode we talk with Liz Cavell (Staff/Board member of the Freedom from Religion Foundation and co-host of the “We Dissent” podcast); Dan Mach (Director, ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief); and, for a local perspective, Chris Ullery, Extremism and Social Justice Reporter for the USA Today Network in PA). Thanks for listening! Now follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. And become a Patreon supporter at www.podcastunreasonable.com. Brad speaks to Rachel Laser, President and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. They discuss AU's lawsuit with the ACLU and FFRF in the case of the state of Oklahoma agreeing to send taxpayer funds to a Catholic school. This is, in essence, an attempt to make Christian schools into public schools. From AU: And public schools must be secular and open to all students. They are not allowed to discriminate against students or indoctrinate children into one religion. But that is exactly what Oklahoma's newly approved religious public charter school, St. Isidore of Seville, intends to do. Approved by the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board in June 2023, St. Isidore would be a public school—entirely funded by the taxpayers of Oklahoma—even though St. Isidore makes clear in its charter school application that it intends to run the school “as a Catholic school” and a “place of evangelization.” That's why Americans United along with the ACLU, Freedom from Religion Foundation and Education Law Center is suing. Can you imagine starting a church in one of the most post-Christian cities in the U.S.? That's exactly what Megan and Stephen did when they moved to Madison, Wisconsin, with a mission to create a community that fights loneliness and isolation while connecting people with God and each other. Despite being told that a fast-growing or large church would never work here, they believed Jesus goes to the dark places and wanted to be his hands and feet in the city. One common belief we encounter is that if people simply read the Bible, they'll become believers. However, an atheist lawyer from the Freedom from Religion Foundation disagrees, arguing that the road to atheism is littered with Bibles that have been read cover to cover. So, we dive into the importance of not just reading the good book, but understanding how to approach it. We share a simple three-step model for Bible reading: read, reflect, and respond, as well as the significance of picking the right translation and not relying solely on paraphrases. As we wrap up, we explore the crucial role of engaging with the Bible in our spiritual journey. We discuss how the Bible is not only static, but dynamic – God continues to speak and work through it. We also address the idea that some people feel they don't need to read the Bible anymore, and examine the warning of Psalm 1 that those who meditate on the law of the Lord will prosper in all they do. Join us and be challenged to maintain an open attitude towards your faith and respond to what you read in the Bible.Support the show

Producer/Host: Amy Browne This week: One of the things people are talking about around town this holiday season is the controversy around a nativity scene in Bucksport. A Penobscot resident made a report to the Freedom from Religion Foundation‘s Maine Chapter about the town sponsored religious display, and the chapter responded by asking to add a small sign nearby, celebrating the solstice and the Bill of Rights. Tom Waddell, columnist for the Kennebec Journal, and the President of Maine Chapter of the Freedom from Religion Foundation explains why they got involved. About the host: Amy Browne started out at WERU as a volunteer news & public affairs producer in 2000, co-hosting/co-producing RadioActive with Meredith DeFrancesco. She joined the team of Voices producers a few years later, and has been WERU's News & Public Affairs Manager since January, 2006. In addition to RadioActive, Voices, Maine Currents and Maine: The Way Life Could Be, Amy also produced and hosted the WERU News Report for several years. She has produced segments for national programs including Free Speech Radio News, This Way Out, Making Contact, Workers Independent News, Pacifica PeaceWatch, and Live Wire News, and has contributed to Democracy Now and the WBAI News Report. She is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Environmental Journalism Award from the Sierra Club of Maine, and Maine Association of Broadcasters awards for her work in 2017 and 2021. * Trochlea Challenge to Any Evolutionist: (Update: After PZ Myers took a shot at RSR, we renamed the sketch below to the PZ Myers Trochlea Challenge.) Real Science Radio asks any evolutionist to view this anatomical image of the human eye Trochlea and take the KGOV.com challenge. On this radio program, Bob Enyart and RSR co-host Fred Williams discuss the debate over at Theology Online on Entropy and Evolution which led the BEL staff to commission this diagram of the muscles of the eye and the Trochlea sling, to disseminate this challenge. The image shows that the Superior Oblique muscle attached to the top of the eye is threaded through a sling, the Trochlea, for functionality (angle of torque, space requirements, etc.) and the strap-like muscle narrows to a cord to slide through. Darwin's natural selection could not choose this configuration until if functioned minimally. How many generations of offspring with random mutations modifying the design of the various tissue types like bone, nerve, cartilage, and muscle, happening simultaneously do you estimate would have to pass before this most simple of design features of the eye happened upon by chance in order for natural selection to choose it? Now estimate the generations of offspring for a complex feature of the eye... * A Very Encouraging RSR Listener: wrote about our March 28, 2008 program Real Science Radio- Caterpillar Kills Atheism: "I cannot emphasize how much I love this stuff....it is simplicity and truth at its finest -- I thrive on it..I crave it... just two guys talking about the miracle of creation. (See a BEL listener who initially compared Bob to Benny Hinn until...) The BEL show was on 12-11-08; - TheologyOnline's psychologist Zakath in a 10-round moderated written online debate, also available in soft cover; - TOL's member who calls himself Fool; 3-28-06; - John Henderson who wrote the book God.com 6-15-2006; and, - Michael Shermer, an editor with Scientific American and the Skeptic Society who in in this famous 73-second excerpt on BEL denied that the Bible was correct when it stated that the sun should not be worshipped because it is not a god, but rather, that the sun is a light. Illustrating the difficulty debating atheists when they're hesitant to admit to even the most obvious common ground, Schermer famously replied, "The sun is not a light." 8-28-03 BEL Indiana Seminars: Bob Enyart is coming to Indiana, Goshen in the evening of Jan. 29th and Indianapolis on Saturday January 31st, to present a brand new BEL Seminar titled Hermeneutics: Tools for Studying the Bible. It's Wednesday, October 5th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslim herdsmen target Christians for murder Suspected Muslim herdsmen killed two Christians in Plateau state, Nigeria on September 25. This came a day after Islamic State terrorists killed two Christians in northern Nigeria's Kano state. A week before that, suspected ISIS militants bombed a Christian-owned business in northeast Nigeria, injuring three Christians. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, director of the Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria, told Morning Star News, “This is an all-encompassing strategy of wiping the entire Christian population from our ancestral land and the face of the Earth. So far, more than 600 farmlands in Christian communities . . . with crops worth over [$460,000] have been destroyed by the herdsmen in the past five months.” German population grew by 843,000 people, mostly Ukrainian refugees The German Federal Statistical Office reports its population grew by a record 843,000 people this year. Most of the influx came from 750,000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war between Russia and Ukraine. Women make up most of the refugees. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Evangelicals across Europe have welcomed Ukrainian refugees. Texas judge allowed to open court with prayer Last Thursday, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a Texas county judge can continue to open his court proceedings with prayer. The Freedom from Religion Foundation brought the case against Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack in 2019. You can thank Justice Mack by calling (936) 539-7801. In response to the ruling, Mack said, “I am eternally grateful to the judges on the 5th Circuit who upheld this historical practice. I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Montgomery County.” Colossians 4:2 says, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” 40 Days for Life started in 600 cities 40 Days for Life kicked off last Wednesday in over 600 cities worldwide. Five days into the campaign, at least 20 mothers have chosen life in response to the pro-life vigils outside abortion mills. Over the past three months, 10 abortion mills have shut down in cities where 40 Days for Life vigils have been held. On Monday, a mother seeking an abortion in Tallahassee, Florida encountered a vigil. She told the local leader, “Thank you for your sign. It helped me today. I came here for an abortion today, but I decided not to have one.” Proverbs 24:11 says, “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” Telemundo poll: Hispanic voters prefer Democrats A new NBC/Telemundo poll found Hispanic voters prefer a Democrat-controlled Congress over a Republican-controlled one by 54% to 33%. That's a margin of 21 points. Ten years ago, that margin was over 40 points when Hispanic preferred a Democrat Congress by 65% to 23%. The Democrat Party has been losing support from working class minorities as its support is shifting to mostly college-educated whites. Twitter stock soared Musk wanted to buy Twitter shares soared on Tuesday after billionaire Elon Musk said he wanted to proceed with a $44 billion acquisition of the social media company. The deal was on the rocks when Musk said he planned to terminate the buyout in July followed by lawsuits from both Musk and Twitter. Musk originally wanted to obtain Twitter in an effort to protect free speech. More college-educated women than men A new Pew Research survey found women now outnumber men in the college-educated labor force in the U.S. Women account for just over 50% of the college-educated workforce. The change occurred in the fourth quarter of 2019 and continues today. The shift comes four decades after women outpaced men in the earning of bachelor's degrees each year. Hurricane Ian killed 102 Floridians And finally, Hurricane Ian is now the deadliest storm to hit Florida since 1935. As of Tuesday, at least 102 people have been reported killed since Ian struck the state last week. Hundreds of thousands of people remain without power, roads are inundated, and the hardest-hit areas resemble a warzone. Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis explained what he's doing to get power back on for everyone. DeSANTIS: “Under my direction and working with the legislature, Florida, we created a disaster relief fund of $500 million that's in the state budget. So, we're planning for things like this. You know, you pray that they don't happen, but you've got to be ready in case they do. So, that $500 million it was what we used to do the ramp up to pre-stage. "It's also where we're taking money from to defray the costs of these additional linemen coming in to get the power back on. You know, in Hurricane Michael, there was like a contest about who's going to get the reimbursement or who's going to be on the hook. And so, some of the efforts were slower. "What I'm saying is, ‘Look, I'll be on the hook for it. That's fine. We'll use our disaster fund to do these reimbursements. We'll work it out somehow.' But we want to surge people here. So, you have 1,000 linemen statewide from the co op Association throughout Florida that came. And then Duke Electric, they're doing 2,500 to 3,500 people surging down after they've completed their efforts in other parts of the state. "So, this is a massive number of people and that's what I want to see. We want to be able to get the power back on.” Fox News reports churches across Southwest Florida are providing a steadying force after the devastation. CityServe, a Christ-centered non-profit that offers the Gospel, is resourcing churches with emergency food, water, and supplies to help families affected by the storm. When Dan Barker was a teenager, he was involved with the ministry of Kathryn Kuhlman, one of a group of so-called faith healers. (See a BEL listener, TOL's Crow, who initially compared Bob to Benny Hinn until...) After interviewing atheists including: - ABC's Reginald Finley, called The Infidel Guy, from ABC's Wife Swap program; - TheologyOnline's psychologist Zakath; - TOL's member who calls himself Fool; - John Henderson who wrote the book God.com; and, - Michael Shermer, an editor with Scientific American and the Skeptic Society who in in this famous 73-second excerpt on BEL denied that the sun is a light, illustrating that it's tough debating atheists when they're hesitant to admit to even the most obvious common ground; now comes Dan Barker, a director with the Freedom from Religion Foundation.* Truth, the Senses, the Universe, Sun and Moon: Acknowledging the difficulty in proving a negative, Bob Enyart stipulates at the outset that atheist Dan Barker would not have to worry about whether God was out on a star in a galaxy far, far away, but rather, Bob and Dan could discuss the evidence before us all, right here and right now. Bob then asks Dan Barker whether or not objective Truth exists. The atheists who will acknowledge that objective truth exists often give so many qualifiers that it can be hard to know if they believe in objective reality. Dan stressed, with Bob's concurrence, that "the word truth is not a thing;" that is, truth is not a physical object. After Bob and Dan seemed to agree that Truth and objective reality exists, later in the discussion Dan seemed to backtrack, and suggest that everything could be an illusion including Barker's very own existence. Yikes! With this Bob blew up in frustration. Not really. Actually, Bob simply reminded Dan of Descartes' "I think, therefore I am" and when Dan said that perhaps everything was an illusion, Bob replied, "Dan, you can assert that you think that I am an illusion, perhaps you think I'm in a dream you are having; but no, you cannot assert that you are an illusion; that YOU do not exist." And Bob indicated Dan's toying with the possibility that perhaps he didn't exist was further evidence that he was equivocating earlier regarding the existence of truth. In the end, Bob was thankful that he and Dan could once again agree that Dan existed, so that the show could proceed. Dan then acknowledged that knowledge can come from sources other than one's own five senses. Bob pointed out that some atheists assert that "only your five senses provide real knowledge," about which he typically asks: "says which of the five?" It wasn't until he was off air that Bob noticed that at 13 minutes into the program Dan seemed to backslide by saying that we should "assume" that "there's an objective reality." (Bob also would be thankful if Dan could email a clarification as to whether he agrees that "reason and logic" are a source, quite apart from the five senses, of knowledge.) Bob and Dan also talked about whether the universe had a beginning, and Bob quoted Hawking: "This argument about whether or not the universe had a beginning, persisted into the 19th and 20th centuries. It was conducted mainly on the basis of theology and philosophy... But if your theory disagrees with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, it is in bad trouble. In fact, the theory that the universe has existed forever is in serious difficulty with the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The Second Law states that disorder always increases with time. ...it indicates that there must have been a beginning. Otherwise, the universe would be in a state of complete disorder by now, and everything would be at the same temperature." -Stephen Hawking To which Dan stated that Hawking has had to correct himself in the past, to which Bob Enyart replied, "Yes, but not about this." Dan tried to explain the continued existence of the universe by claiming that there could be many universes. (Please note, as Bob demonstrated in his 10-round moderated debate with TOL's Zakath, atheists often rationalize "complexity by... introducing even more complexity," completely apart from any empirical evidence, wildly increasing complexity in order to explain it; if an atheist has a problem in that he cannot explain by the laws of science the continued existence of the universe, he merely posits infinite parallel or successive universes. The cover of Discover magazine July 2008 states "Parallel Universes, Infinite Yous" and they ask a physicist, "Can you explain parallel universes?" and Max Tegmark replies, "Three [parallel universes] have been proposed by other people, and I've added a fourth... go far enough out and you will find another Earth with another version of yourself." Yes, attempting to get rid of the Creator requires extraordinary creativity.) Bob argued that there is no empirical evidence for parallel universes, and that if a succession of universes gave rise to one another, that entire process would be a perpetual motion machine that would have run out of useable energy long ago. Bob argued that people should not believe that the Big Bang theory can actually explain the existence of the universe because: - since big bangers don't know "which objects came first, stars or galaxies? Theoretical science offers no clear guidance..." according to 23-year Nature magazine editor John Maddox, p. 48, What Remains to be Discovered; - in the universe's supposed 15 billion years there's insufficient time for its temperature to even out to 2.7 K; - the natural formation of a solar system precludes gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn; - 99% of the solar system mass is in the Sun, yet the planets have 99% of the angular momentum (spin); and, - after $20 billion spent on the U.S. Apollo and lunar program to determine how the moon got there, the only theories simply can't account for the evidence. Dan countered that science always increases in knowledge. And Bob agreed, and then asked if scientific evidence might preclude certain possibilities (like millions of flies spontaneously generating daily out of carcasses, or the solar system forming from a condensing gas cloud). Bob brought up that the supposed Big Bang would have been an event that does not even comply with the laws of physics and which atheists accept on faith. (One tiny example is the so-called Inflationary Period which supposedly began shortly after the explosion and saw a wild and virtually instantaneous acceleration of the speed of the expansion of the universe with a subsequent virtually instantaneous deceleration, none of this having any correlation to the physical laws and hardly qualifying even as a scientific proposition.) Bob concluded that people should not be tricked into thinking that atheistic cosmology has proven how the universe could exist apart from a Creator, when they can't explain the temperature of the universe, the formation of stars or galaxies, gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn, the spin of the Sun vs. the planets, nor even the moon, our very closest outer-space neighbor! Dan closed by agreeing to Bob's suggestion that they trade materials: - Bob's DVD on the Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and - Dan's book, Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists, which has a chapter arguing against the resurrection, and that they schedule a debate on Christ's resurrection. A BEL staffer put Dan's DVD in the mail right after today's program. Stay tuned...

It's Friday, it's P*ck day, and tonight his special guest on Truth Wanted will (finally) be Emma Thorne! This week's Patron of the Week is Matthew Scholtes! Our first contestant is Liam in Louisiana, come on down! Liam asks our hosts about separation of church and state, specifically their opinion on the mayor of New Orleans incorporating a Catholic tradition in their inauguration ceremony. Puck isn't about to die on the hill of swearing in on Bibles, or other traditions that are nominally associated with religion. If the Freedom from Religion Foundation is though, we certainly won't complain!Aaron has beef with tonight's YouTube poll, and feels like cryptocurrency being framed as either “the future of currency” or “a pyramid scheme” isn't entirely fair. Puck illustrates how NFTs could be perceived as a scam, and asks Aaron some pointed questions. Emma's not convinced either, and won't be buying a slice of any songs any time soon.Scott wants to talk about the Central Park 5 case. Our hosts aren't super familiar with the case, but promise to look into it further. Also, there may have been baby dinosaurs on Noah's Ark (but probably not).Connla wants to talk about how NFTs could ruin the video game experience by pushing out those who aren't willing to shell out the big bucks for space. Our hosts agree that it's a ‘dangerous game,' analogous to the pitfalls of loot boxes and pay-to-win mechanics. All parties can agree that legislation could help limit greed, and make gaming better for everyone. That's our show tonight folks, stay skeptical, we'll see you next week!

Greetings Heathens! In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Johnny P Angel is joined by Jmike. Johnny, keep growing that beard, it is the beard show you know. Just kidding,Let's get to calls! Michael from Canada asks if we think he is irrational for believing in a diety. He goes on to argue with Jmike about empirical evidence and the presup nonsense about being cut off when being held to task. Hey Michael don't be passive aggressive, you are not being cut off or interrupted, Jmike is having an honest conversation with you.Joe in Virginia is up next, he is curious about the design argument and how do we know if something is designed. Designed by what or who exactly? Jmike asks: Joe, have you ever seen a God design something?Returning caller Otangelo in Brazil, wants to present his 4 premises that explain the fundamental forces of the universe (including the fine-tuning argument) and whether we accept them. Johnny responds with: Life, the universe, and everything. (The answer is 42!) Oooooh, fun with Otangelo. I look forward to hearing Jmike deconstruct these premises.Laura in the UK is asking about how we get laws in place to avoid childhood indoctrination within religions and cults. A couple of the first things we can do is to educate ourselves, email and call political representatives, and contacting and volunteering with the Freedom from Religion Foundation. There is a grey area here though, as personal freedoms and limits can play a part in enacting a law if it is passed.Micheal in California is wondering if religion provides a sound basis for people to overcome their shortcomings. Ok, how?? Please show your work with examples or evidence that this is the case.CJ in California is wondering about the hosts' beliefs, that there is a snake that surrounds the Earth, and how violence is increasing due to society's turn from God. Interesting claim, can you back it up? And not from your personal video, we are not here to promote your channel dude. That's our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area and please get vaccinated if you can. Things are starting to open up which is fantastic! The world is better with you in it. See you next week!
Join us to hear the dramatic story of the atheist campaign to cancel Hedin's course, the evidence the atheists tried to bury, and discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of the nature and origin of matter, space, and even time itself.

Not only do we have awesome callers to talk with, we also have super chats! Andy - TX We wrap up our conversation about veganism with repeat caller Andy. Eric and Vi agree that factory farming is immoral, and get deeper into the nuances of harm reduction by discussing the availability of ethically sourced products, slave labor in cashew farming, and monkeys in chains. NOTE: We have plans to dedicate a few weeks at a future date to vegan atheist activism, but in the meantime will be moving towards other topics in upcoming episodes. Sam - UK Does using philosophical terms in conversation help you communicate, or do you just sound a bit pretentious? Sam Chaos (they/them) calls in to discuss. Eric points out that if you understand the terms, you can communicate well without having to resort to obscure terminology.Chris - CT Chris calls in to vent about being forced to play into his employer's religion at the risk of not being allowed to get his PhD. Vi and Eric suggest taking notes, documenting this abuse of power, and reporting it after he's graduated. If you are witnessing religious overreach, please consider notifying the Freedom from Religion Foundation (https://ffrf.org/legal/report) or American Atheists (https://www.atheists.org/legal/report...). Dakota - WI As Americans, should we be skeptical of capitalism? Dakota wants to use the same kind of critical thinking we apply to religion to our economic model. Eric has questions about what exactly we should be skeptical of. Vi points out an often overlooked period in American history: when businessmen bankrolled religious pundits in an effort to push back against FDR's New Deal. The book suggestion from this clip is Kevin M. Kruse's “One Nation Under God”: https://history.princeton.edu/about/p... NOTE: Upon review, this caller seems to have thrown doubt on the existence (or severity) of the Uyghur genocide in Xinjiang, China. We didn't fully realize this during the course of the actual call, but Skeptic Generation does not endorse this view. If you want to learn more, please visit the shared links below. Elliot - WA Vi and Eric have lots of feelings about this call. Elliot (they/them) wants to know our thoughts about progressive, affirming versions of Christianity that try to reconcile LGBTQIA+ rights with Scripture. Vi sets up a steelman of the position, and Eric tears it TF down. Bottom line: It's great if you can be an affirming, progressive Christian. But that doesn't absolve Christianity of the atrocities it has inspired against marginalized groups. _________Copyright © 2021 Skeptic Generation. All rights reserved.
The rotunda of the Illinois State Capitol is the setting for this edition of Spotlight. Monte Larrick interviewed Delbra Pratt of the Illinois Prayer Caucus Network following the December 3rd dedication of the nativity scene on display in the rotunda. They discuss the important messages that a nativity scene sends when featured in the public square and contrast that with the messages of the displays of the Freedom from Religion Foundation and the Chicago chapter of The Satanic Temple. Delbra Pratt encourages believers to link their prayer with action – to stand against the spirit of death by actively affirming life – and she and Monte enumerate the resulting consequences as our state (and nation) opens the door to welcome the spirit of death. The podcast concludes with information regarding the purpose and focus of the Illinois Prayer Caucus Network. If you would like more information about the prayer caucus, please contact State Director Pratt at Delbra@IllinoisPrayerCaucus.com
Tweet Is there a place for religion in the world today? History demonstrates that humanity is incurably religious…we can't seem to separate humans from their beliefs. But it is a demonstrable fact that religion, and religionism, have done tremendous amounts of damage over the centuries–from religious wars, terrorism in the name of God, religious trauma, cults, and all sorts of religious trauma and sexual abuse. So many people need to recover from the harmful effects of religion that Dr Ray has started two organizations to help people do just that–Recovering from Religion Foundation, as well as the Secular Therapy Project. Find out more about Darrel's work, as well as what might be in your future should you too need to recover from religion. Support the stream: https://streamlabs.com/nonsequiturshow Do “In God We Trust,” the Declaration of Independence, and other historical “evidence” prove that America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles? Are the Ten Commandments the basis for American law? A constitutional attorney dives into the debate about religion's role in America's founding. In today's contentious political climate, understanding religion's role in American government is more important than ever. Christian nationalists assert that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and advocate an agenda based on this popular historical claim. But is this belief true? The Founding Myth answers the question once and for all. Andrew L. Seidel, a constitutional attorney at the Freedom from Religion Foundation, builds his case point by point, comparing the Ten Commandments to the Constitution and contrasting biblical doctrine with America's founding philosophy, showing that the Bible contradicts the Declaration of Independence's central tenets. Thoroughly researched, this persuasively argued and fascinating book proves that America was not built on the Bible and that Christian nationalism is, in fact, un-American.Trim size:6.125 x 9 Inches Review “Seidel, a constitutional attorney, provides a fervent takedown of Christian Nationalism in his furious debut. After support by far-right Christian nationalists helped Donald Trump win the U.S. presidency, Seidel worries that Evangelical political influence is increasing and dangerous. He argues that America was not founded as a Christian nation on Judeo-Christian principles, and thus Christian nationalists are inherently wrong. Judeo-Christian principles, he argues, are directly opposed to the Enlightenment principles on which the United States was founded: ‘to put it bluntly, Christianity is un-American.' Seidel points out subtle but pervasive Christian theocratic arguments that aim to link patriotism with religion by looking at the history of the 1950s media blitz conducted by Christian organizations promoting religion in American life, the 1954 addition by Congress of ‘under God' to the Pledge of Allegiance, and Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan's use of ‘God bless America' as a concluding remark for presidential addresses. According to Seidel, Christian nationalists see Christianity as the foundation of American exceptionalism; Seidel subverts this claim by arguing that democratic freedoms (such as freedom of religion and speech) are what make America exceptional. While many readers who don't agree with Seidel will dismiss his forceful tone, his well-conceived arguments will spark conversations for those willing to listen.” — Publishers Weekly About the Author Andrew L. Seidel works as a constitutional attorney at the Freedom from Religion Foundation (ffrf.org), litigating cases involving religion and the Constitution. He has appeared on Fox and Friends, MSNBC, and The O'Reilly Factor; numerous radio shows; speaks and writes extensively about religious freedom; and has been profiled on BBC News, BuzzFeed, International Business Times, and more. President Trump has announced his plans for military budget increases. The question now is whether the alleged increase of $54 Billion is an actual increase or just an increase over previously stated projections.Yes, it's true; we do have a military budget greater than the rest of the world combined. We also have the most freedom at stake due to our commitment to defend all NATO members. Stu says he would like more research and development of advanced weapons systems, and Pat reiterates his point that cutting waste is okay even if cutting military spending as a whole is not.Trump also graded his first weeks in office and gave himself some good grades. The president gave himself an A-plus for effort, an A for results, and a C-plus grade for messaging (communication). As a whole, the guys agree with his self-assessment.Speaking of results, Trump has taken heat for not filling hundreds of government jobs. The fact is, he does not want to fill those jobs in order to cut back on government bureaucracy. The figure is very notable, as 516 positions are going unfilled, but the guys agree that such action is not the problem, it's the communication of his intent. Perhaps he needs a social media platform that accepts more than 140 characters.Shrinking the power of the federal government is what we want. Stu reiterates his point that the Department of Education should not exist. 80 percent of Americans (estimated) agree that members of Congress should have term limits in place. Will Trump be the president to force this issue to a vote? The balloon on Stu's ceiling is still up there. It has been 37 days and it has not moved an inch. And to top it all off, we find out that he got said balloon for FREE!!!!! Don't get excited for a live webcam, though, as Stu has decided that a camera filming the inside of his house 24/7 is something he probably doesn't want.Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has proposed legislation that would re-name the street in front of the Russian embassy in Washington “Boris Nemtsov Plaza” to remind the diplomats every day of the Russian opposition leader who was murdered in Moscow in 2015, presumably by the Kremlin. The guys agree that it probably isn't the best idea in the world to antagonize Russia in this manner.Ron Reagan, the liberal son of the famous conservative president, has appeared in a new commercial that makes him look like a special kind of douche. He recently appeared in an ad for the “Freedom from Religion Foundation” in which he described himself as an “unabashed atheist” standing up for the separation of church and state. Pat explains that the First Amendment protects religion from government, not the other way around.A Calgary, Alberta couple has been convicted of first-degree murder after their diabetic son was found practically mummified due to neglect because they did not listen to the boy's doctors due to their devout religious beliefs. Pat tells his own story of trying to find the right care for his own family and describes what a fine line it is between religious beliefs and societal requirements. It's Fat Tuesday, and what a great day it is to celebrate Jeffy! Ron Reagan, the liberal son of the great conservative president, has appeared in a commercial for the‘Freedom from Religion Foundation' and unleashed a wave of pure douchiness in the process! Introducing himself as a proud atheist, he calls for donations for an organization designed to protect the separation of church and state “as the Founding Fathers intended.” In short, this doesn't fly well on this show. Pat informs listeners that Ron Reagan is simply riding his dead father's coattails to draw attention to liberal causes and explains that the separation of church and state is designed to protect religion from government (and not vice versa).Listen to Pat & Stu for FREE on TheBlaze Radio Network from 5p-7p ET, Mon. through Fri. www.theblaze.com/radio Learn more about your ad choices.
