This week on All Ears Abby invites us all to take a break from ongoing election shenanigans and enjoy a lively interview with musician David Byrne, whose eccentric musical stylings as the former Talking Heads frontman catapulted him into a multi-faceted career as an artist across many modes of expression. He’s written books, designed art installations, created journalism projects, and last year adapted his acclaimed concert tour, American Utopia, for Broadway. He and Abby look back at his remarkable journey and talk about some of the ways art pushed him to grow as a person, giving him perspective on some of his youthful, broad critiques of middle class American values. These insights led him to some revelations about his earlier work that manifest with a kind of joyful, percussive melancholy in American Utopia. Spike Lee filmed the show right before COVID hit in March, preserving a mood that seems like a perfect fit for these times. Lee’s filmed adaption of American Utopia is currently screening on HBO Max. The building across the street was on fire the night we sat down to talk. The entire floor smelled of smoke and if you looked out the window, you might have thought the world was coming to an end. It's probably as good a backdrop as any for a interview that quickly shifts into an impending sense of gloom during this age of Trump. Honestly, I can’t remember what was in the news that week, but I’m sure it was plenty bad. Kotis has a knack for timing. His best known work, the dystopian satire Urinetown: The Musical opened on Broadway September 13th, 2001. Sure, everyone in New York has a 9/11 story, but his seemed strangely appropriate given the subject matter.  As Kotis tells it, that timing sometimes works to his advantage, as the musical was something of a Hail Mary pass for himself and Mark Hollmann, one final shot living the life of a playwright before the realities of adulthood really settled in. Kotis discusses his early days in New York, as a writer turned location scout, and the importance of satire even when it seems that all is lost.

Fresh (or less-than-fresh, really) off the red eye in from LA, Corinne & Krystyna are sad to be back, but happy to be alive after an action-packed trip that included, spills, thrills...and Steve Urkel (WTF!?!). This week, the now bronzed babes of Sorry About Last Night interview fellow comic and man-in-the-midst-of-a-6 1/2-year-relationship-that's-really-a-15-year-relationship, MIKE CANNON! While Corinne seems truly perplexed about what Krystyna and Mike both do to keep their respective current relationships in tact, C and K can agree on one thing: they wouldn't mind getting their pussies shot with Mike's Cannon (amIright?!?!). The three comics talk teen years, public BJs, therapy, fighting, mind games, anal, how important it is to see more than just one dick in your lifetime and homosexual tendencies in straight dudes.
