Today I chat to Ahlam, The Veiled Speechie, about her three births. She was under the care of the midwifery clinic at Bankstown Hospital for her pregnancies and admits that she did no preparation at all for her first birth which ended with an episiotomy and a vacuum delivery and led into a painful and challenging postpartum. As soon as she discovered she was pregnant with her second she started researching and preparing as she was determined to experience a positive water birth, which she did. Her third labour was fast and intense but she felt confident in her choices and her ability to advocate for herself. Just a few streets from the Louvre in central Paris, the Atelier des Artistes en Exil (the Agency of Artists in Exile) is a large studio space and cultural centre which has become a thriving hub for 400+ refugee professional artists. We join them for an “open doors” evening where visual artists, photographers, musicians and dancers are sharing their work with the public. Graffiti artist and sculptor Ahlam Jarban is our guide. Originally from Yemen, Ahlam now lives in France and has been a member of the Atelier since 2018. She shares a vibrant studio space with four other artists who have all fled their country - including Richie, a painter from Myanmar who arrived in June. Since coming to Paris, Richie's art has become much more political. We also hear from Iranian artist Maral Balouri, Kurdish artist Bager Kaya, Afghan photographers Fatima Hossaini and Roya Heydari, and atelier director Judith Depaule The Atelier provides practical support to refugee artists applying for asylum in France, in addition to professional development and project support. But bringing together exiled artists from 45 different countries has also created a strong sense of community and sharing of artistic ideas. It's a place for preserving traditional culture but also developing new collaborations. The night ends with a joyful live concert outside in the courtyard. Ahlam shares how tough it was to move into an environment where she didn't feel she belonged and how adaptability saved her. Plus she shared that when her belief system about her health shifted she finally came into balance. If you're struggling with too many responsibilities, and feeling alone in the pressures of life then this is the episode for you. 2020 has been a unique year, full of many lessons. We thought what better way to close the year than to get together some of our community to share their biggest lesson of 2020.

Ahlam Alharthy laughed at the thought of herself being an entrepreneur. She had a good steady job in teaching. Business was always for others, not her. Then she became pregnant and circumstances changed. In this episode we discuss leaving a job you love, reluctantly launching a business and scaling during a global pandemic. In this episode of 9 to when? Jamie speaks with Ahlam Alharthy of Grow With Me. Ahlam’s story: ‘I really wanted to know how I could best nurture my daughters brain development and wanted her to have good quality toys that were open ended so she can learn whilst playing. But it was extremely difficult to find the time to do that at the early stages of motherhood. Once life got less crazy, I became completely obsessed with baby development and play and that’s when Grow With Me was born. I wanted to create a play box not only because I would have loved it myself at the time but also to help other mums like me.’
This interview was originally broadcast in April, 2019. The overthrow of the Saddam Hussein and his Ba’ath regime in 2007 threw a war-torn nation into even deeper turmoil. Travelling to Damascus to report on the sudden exodus of Iraqis to Syria, our guest today, Deborah Campbell, met Ahlam, a refugee known in the industry as a “fixer” – someone who provides Western media with dependable information and contacts.

Initially recorded in 2017, we share a lot of cringeworthy stuff (that you should probably skip) about the dating scene for POCs in Malaysia. Shams, Ahlam, and Faithful also talk about and compare the 'high stakes' of dating in Saudi Arabia to the more open dating environment in Kuala Lumpur and the swiping culture in Kuala Lumpur. Also highlighted: the toxicity of expected gender roles.
Majid went from kebab delivery boy to running clandestine missions rescuing women and children facing violence in Iraq. He teamed up with Ahlam, a widow and survivor of domestic abuse. Together they built an underground network, smuggling some of Iraq's most vulnerable people – most recently members of the LGBTQ community – to safety. While there, she hired an Iraqi refugee named Ahlam to help her as a fixer. But while working together, Ahlam was kidnapped in front of her eyes. In her recent book, A Disappearance in Damascus: A Story of Friendship and Survival in the Shadow of War, Campbell recounts her time reporting in Syria and her desperate attempt to find her fixer and friend. The latest release on Tash's Movement Recordings finds the label revisiting Fernando Olaya's 'The Cube' EP for a brand new set of remixes. Originally released in July of this year the three track offering proved to be some of the Colombian artists finest work to date. Now four months later we see the Greek imprint calling upon Maydan, John Cosani, Just 9eorge and Stage Van H & W&DY to re-interpret the tracks for the fall season. Leading the release off is Maydan who is making his first appearance on Movement Recordings. The Israeli artist is part of Lonya's Asymmetric Recordings where he acts as one of the label A&Rs and has also appeared on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Here he puts his own unique spin on 'Ahlam' taking it into deep techno territory. Backed by a mountainous groove and smooth hypnotic lines the piece builds a mesmerising cadence early. The cross cultural motifs translate wonderfully over the beefy foundation eventually leading to a spiritual break. Following a charming moment the meditative pulse quickly returns as the vocal storyboard continues to evolve through an exhilarating conclusion. The EPs second selection finds Just 9eorge returning for his seventh appearance following a contribution to the label's Technical Progress Vol. 6 collection from June of this year. The Greek artist has become loved for his soulful productions and he's worked more of his magic on 'Sagitarius'. Taking a rugged approach Just 9eorge lays down an acidic groove which proves to be the perfect foundation for the original's enlightening themes. Solemn and reflective, the piece flows through a storyboard of emotions before the main break seals it's emotive core with melancholic tones and blissful pads. Gorgeous interpretation from Just 9eorge. John Cosani is up next and makes his second appearance on Movement Recordings following a contribution to the labels 'Re:Born' collection from June of 2015. The Argentinean artist has also found a home on Lonya's Asymmetric Recordings where his modern take on progressive music has flourished. Here he takes the EP's title track 'The Cube' into deeper hypnotic territory which complements the original wonderfully. John's chunky foundation emanates a strong dance floor sensibility before rough stabs and twisted effects further tantalise the senses. Following a dramatic break fuelled with sweeping noise and sizzling builds, the vocal-like refrains and hazy melodies find a place in harmonic heaven, carrying the piece to an emotive conclusion. The release concludes with two of the labels core artists Stage Van H & W&DY collaborating once again. The Dutch duo have worked together several times in the past with magical results and their interpretation of 'The Cube' is no different. With a more techno inspired take than John, Stage and W&DY deliver a great complement with tough kicks and a chugging groove sitting at the foundation. As waves of percussion get worked in the rhythms roll before a big melodic theme initiates the main break. Unconventional chord changes makes for a stunning interlude full of emotion and wonder, before the tough groove returns and the peak time sensibilities take you home. A huge remix from Stage & W&DY which rounds out a superb remix collection from Tash's Movement Recordings. Don't miss it. Beatport > https://www.beatport.com/track/ahlam-maydan-remix/8567775#
