Bri Woodson, descendant of Carter G. Woodson (also known as The Father of Black History), sat down with Danielle to discuss how we can each show up in this moment, as Black history is getting erased, racism is on the rise, and fear seems to be a main tactic of this administration. Bri talks about the intersection between racism and mental health, and how we need to change our understanding and treatment of that which is so deeply embedded in the soul of this country. Is it possible that racism changes the makeup of DNA and other physical aspects of human's genetic makeup? Will it even be possible to convince people, in this divisive climate, that racism is something we need to discuss and dismantle on such a more profound level? Bri also discusses how White women, and especially, parents, need to be that much more cognizant of how we are speaking to our kids, and how we are allowing others to speak and behave, just because they are "family." Why is it so important that we stop giving our friends and family a "pass" because they are people in our lives about whom we care? Additionally, she breaks down the real history and celebration behind Juneteenth, and why it is such an important aspects of Black history. This episode is filled with the truth, harsh realizations, and strategies to be better humans who show up for those in need right now, that so many of us need to hear and utilize.Follow Bri at The Controversial Blonde on Instagram and TikTok. Where we are now feels worlds ahead, in a REALLY awesome way. Of course, we've been doing this communication thing publicly for a minute (ok, seven years to be exact), so we definitely have a leg up on what works. Wells kicks off the show this week wearing some designer shades because…martinis y'all. They get ya every time. On the plus side, he's well rested thanks to some accidental sleep divorce. Meanwhile, Brandi is nearing the end of her time at the Sphere but isn't slowing down anytime soon - more gigs in LA, Nashville, Calgary, then back to Vegas, we're talking serious frequent flyer points, YFT'ers. Wells had a minor dust-up with a nightclub bouncer in NYC - is the city getting to him?? Maybe the chill vibes of LA are what he really needs right now. But first stop is Maine to golf with McDreamy…not a bad detour if you ask us. Lotsa good faves this week and a frank discussion on how ChatGPT is just a little too friendly…tata for now!! If you know anything about us, you'll know we love us a Martini. So with National Martini Day coming up on Thursday 19th June, followed by World Martini Day on Saturday 21st June, it would be rude of us not to give a little nod to our signature drink. With that in mind, we've picked out two very different bases for our Martinis, we go high proof with Beluga Gold Line Vodka and low – not in quality, but volume – with Second Sip, a new, recently released 20% abv gin created very much with sessional Martinis in mind by industry stalwarts Leo Robitschek and Nick Strangeway.Make Mine A Martini – 130 cocktails and canapés for fabulous parties by Kay Plunkett-Hogge, is our book choice and it does exactly what it says on the tin. That's if you're staying in… if you're going out, we can't recommend the seven-strong Martini List at Twenty8 NoMad in London highly enough. In the hotseat, we have Tibor Krascsenics, group beverage director at LPM Dubai. He gives us the lowdown on the brand new, extremely stylish cocktail menu, conceived and perfectly presented as a glossy fashion magazine as well as sharing his tip for the perfect Martini. For more from The Cocktail Lovers, visit thecocktaillovers.comFor the products featured in this episode, see websites below:What we're mixing:Turf Club45ml gin (Plymouth or London Dry)45ml dry vermouth7.5ml maraschino liqueur2 dashes absinthe2 dashes orange bittersYour choice of lemon twist /olive/maraschino cherry to garnishMethod: Stir all ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. On this episode of A Lil R and R Podcast, Ramont and Reese start strong with homemade espresso martinis that taste great but quickly become the third (very messy) co-host. The duo dives into a juicy listener question about unwanted attention from a so-called “friend”. Ramont blows Reese's mind with the news that Popeyes now sells fried pickles (chaos ensues). Ramont takes charge cleaning up the chaotic topic list and Reese gifts Ramont a birthday surprise. The guys share tales from working the door at a day party, and they taste-test some mysterious Italian treats. It's vibes, martinis, and mild mayhem — just how you like it!!!WHAT WE LEARNED:Ramont's inner only child still resides withinReese admits that he'd spin the block for one of his exesQuestions, Concerns or Feedback- RamontAndReese@gmail.comIG- ALilRandRPodcast Hosted on Acast. Tools are for humans (and super-smart animals, apparently), garages are for cars, countertops are for food, and rollaways are for organizing! This esoteric episode is all (mostly) about embracing the perfectionist - just a little - and making your tools and shop space match your intellect and style. Because so many good projects and necessary repairs get hog-tied by bad organization, and a lack of operable tool enhancement can be submarined by a lack of organization, we want you to scratch that itch and embrace the OCD (if just long enough to put the nut drivers in the correct drawer). While we're at it, there's Jerry Reed and "Amos Moses", Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Ninja Tune and Funkungfusion, Electronic Excursions in Hi-Fi and Meat Beat Manifesto, and more "Kashmir' covers than you can shake a two-headed guitar at.

The Martini was a once simple cocktail that then became very complicated. At some point the definition of a martini changed and it became more about the vessel and the ingredients were anything you wanted them to be. But there's also nothing wrong with a “martini” that has no gin and no vermouth either. This week we're making a slew of martinis, from the simple to the complex. You can find the recipes on our blog. If you have a question for the Barrel to Bottle Crew, email us at comments@binnys.com, or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. With cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Karen Read underway, public interest in these kinds of high profile trials is at an all-time high. So we explore LawTube's crossover with true crime fandom, the appeal of watching legal commentary for entertainment, and whether these influencers are trustworthy sources. Plus, we talk about CNN's Jake Tapper dropping his new book Original Sin, which claims there was a coordinated cover-up of President Biden's cognitive decline—just days before Biden revealed a serious prostate cancer diagnosis. We discuss the ethics and timing of the book's release, what it says about modern presidential politics, and how the Democratic Party is grappling with these revelations. As always, we've got you covered with our best recommendations: Flasks that look like every day products (Andrew), "Mickey 17" on HBO Max (Laura), Vacation Classic SPF 2-pack (Pam), and Fall Guys (John). It's been a funny old fortnight: Friedrich Merz trips over the doorstep to the chancellor's office, Bärbel Bas buggers the Beamtes, Christian clips a canine, and Germany gets its own little Elon to get rid of all of those distracting human rights and climate laws. In this episode, we're shaking things up (literally) with author, home bartender, and cocktail influencer extraordinaire Hannah Chamberlain of @spiritedLA fame. Hannah joins us to discuss her viral "Drinking Wherever Bartenders Tell Me To" series, her peculiar "Icons of Misbehavior" creations, and those weirdly dirty martinis that might make traditionalists clutch their pearls. We dive into Hannah's journey from UCLA history grad to cocktail creator whose videos have been viewed over half a billion times online. Plus, we attempt to make her infamous "Junk Food Martini" complete with salt and vinegar potato chip-infused spirits and blue cheese stuffed olives. Whether you're a seasoned home bartender or someone who's just discovered the joy of mixing cocktails at 35,000 feet, Hannah's boozy etiquette from her book "How to Be a Better Drinker" will have you raising your glass with newfound confidence. Prepare for a spirited conversation that's equal parts informative, entertaining, and delightfully unconventional — just like Hannah's approach to cocktail culture. Salt & Vinegar Potato Chip Vodka Infuse 2 cups of Vodka or Gin with 1 cup of salt & vinegar potato chips Pour vodka into airtight container, add chips and set aside for at least 8 hours. Strain through coffee filter and keep in freezer. Junk Food Martini In mixing glass add: 3oz. Vodka 0.5 to 1.0oz of Dry Vermouth Ice Stir for 50 – 75 rotations or 30 seconds is fine Garnish with bacon crumble and blue cheese stuffed olives and a garlic clove Enjoy! This will blow you away. 2025 Show Notes Amendment: I love the setup we have here where on the first day of the month, we released our final ever TwoFer Tuesday, and now, here at the last day of the month, we re-release our first ever TwoFer Tuesday! It feels like a wonder twist on "bookends". As always when re-running early episodes, please excuse the atrocious production quality. One of my favorite things looking back on the early episodes of the show is how "different, yet the same" they are. From a sound quality perspective, the differences are night and day in every aspect. But in terms of show format and events, other than missing the now customary summary introduction, and the fact that they've gradually gotten longer over the years, it's the same darned show that it's always been. And what the early episodes lack in polish and finesse and technique and maturity, they somewhat make up for in youthful exuberance and wide-eyed optimism, and a simply innocent fun. You've heard the latest and greatest of TwoFer Tuesday this month, now hear the awkward first baby steps!....different....yet the same.... Lastly, I had toyed with the idea of doing three reruns this month - today's rerun, as well as the two highlighted April Fool's episodes: 2020's "Backtracks" (where all the tracks played in reverse), and 2024's "Parallels" (where all the tracks played over top of each other all at once). But I had procrastinated, and now it's the last day of the month, and it would simply obscene of me to upload three reruns in one day. So the compromise that I settled on was to include links to them here in the show notes, in case you wanted to revisit them (or perhaps experience them for the first time). So, here are the links, Backtracks first, then Parallels. In terms of production value, Backtracks is dramatically better than today's rerun, but also dramatically lesser than our current works, whereas Parallels is very close to our current level of production : https://nerdnoiseradio.podbean.com/e/noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e52-backtracks/ https://nerdnoiseradio.podbean.com/e/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e83-parallels/ And now, the [otherwise unmodified] original episode shownotes! Memory and truth are malleable and nowhere more so than in the Soviet Union. To be a writer in that country was to face an ongoing dilemma: conform to State-mandated topics and themes, or consign oneself to obscurity, writing only for “the desk drawer” or “without permission.” Vasily Grossman challenged that binary choice, creating some of the most compelling and uncompromising fiction and journalism of the century, but also enduring heartbreaking censorship. Her excellent new biography, Vasily Grossman and the Soviet Century (Yale University Press, 2019) brings the life and work of this often-overlooked writer into brilliant focus. Biography of a writer — particularly one with Grossman's output — can be tricky to pull off, but Popoff's extensive research is elegantly arranged into a very readable narrative, in which we follow Grossman through the harrowing experiences of witnessing first hand, famine in the 1920s, the Terror of the 1930s, the carnage of World War II, and the dull ache of censorship in the post-war Soviet Union. Jennifer Eremeeva is an American expatriate writer who divides her time between Riga, Latvia, and New England. Jennifer writes about travel, food, lifestyle, and Russian history and culture with bylines in Reuters, Fodor's, The Moscow Times, and Russian Life. C-Lo returns for an update, but first we talked about martinis. We heard audio of Aaron Rodgers on with McAfee talking about his meeting with the Jets, which was brief and did not go well. The Yankees beat the Rays, but Jazz Chisholm was tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The Mets beat the Cardinals and the Mets scored a run as Francisco Lindor got hung up in a rundown. Last night was Sam Rosen's final Rangers game.

They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ---- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more.
