Broadway has body issues. What is a Broadway Body? Broadway has long preserved the ideology of the "Broadway Body": the hyper-fit, exceptionally able, triple-threat performer who represents how Broadway musicals favor certain kinds of bodies. Casting is always a political act, situated within a power structure that gives preference to the Broadway Body. In Broadway Bodies: A Critical History of Conformity (Oxford UP, 2023), author Ryan Donovan explores how ability, sexuality, and size intersect with gender, race, and ethnicity in casting and performance. To understand these intersectional relationships, he poses a series of questions: Why did A Chorus Line, a show that sought to individuate dancers, inevitably make dancers indistinguishable? How does the use of fat suits in musicals like Dreamgirls and Hairspray stigmatize fatness? What were the political implications of casting two straight actors as the gay couple in La Cage aux Folles in 1983? How did deaf actors change the sound of musicals in Deaf West's Broadway revivals? Whose bodies does Broadway cast and whose does it cast aside? In answering these questions, Broadway Bodies tells a history of Broadway's inclusion of various forms of embodied difference while revealing its simultaneous ambivalence toward non-conforming bodies. Today is World AIDS Day, if anyone needed to be reminded. Though I considered doing a compendium episode of broad scope commemorating a handful of the thousands upon thousands of musicians that succumbed to AIDS, I decided instead to focus on one, Broadway icon Larry Kert, who created the role of Tony in West Side Story and was subsequently an early Robert in Sondheim's Company, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. On December 5, we observe his 95th birthday. In between these career highs, he was involved in a number of notorious Broadway flops (Breakfast at Tiffany's, La Strada, and Rags) from each of which we hear rare recordings. And yet during his life, superstardom eluded him. It's quite likely that some of this had to do with him having lived his life openly and unapologetically as a gay man in a time when most comparable figures were deeply in the closet. But Larry was also a familiar figure on television of that era, appearing as a guest star on popular series, on game shows, on commercials, and as a particular favorite of Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, in which he made 29 guest appearances. He also was often seen as a replacement in and on tours of popular musicals such as Cabaret, Two Gentlemen of Verona, I Can Get It for You Wholesale, and, finally, La Cage aux Folles, to name just a few. In that last show, his frail health meant that he had to miss significant numbers of performances, though he continued to make important appearances on stage and on recordings until just shortly before his death on June 5, 1991 at the age of 60. On the episode, we hear him with such legendary co-stars as Teresa Stratas, Liza Minnelli, Chita Rivera, Madeline Kahn, Maureen McGovern, Mimi Hines, and Harvey Evans, as well as his WSS co-star Carol Lawrence. We also trace the support and influence he received over the course of his career from his trusted friend Martin Charnin, who played a sometimes surprising role in Kert's career. Though Larry Kert felt that he never received the recognition he deserved, this episode demonstrates how he stood at the forefront of all Broadway tenors of his generation, as well as past and future ones. Sometimes Criterion shows us a single film from a director we'd never seen before and leaves us wanting for the rest of our project, so often actually that we call them "one and dones". But then sometimes Criterion shows us a movie by Edouard Molinaro and it's fine that they aren't going to show us another. La Cage aux Folles (1978) is a funny movie, and is also a film that wants to show a very normal family that happens to be LGBTQ. It even may succeed, despite the fact that nearly everyone involved in writing, directing, and performing seems to be a straight guy who holds the material in some amount of disdain, though a disdain that doesn't necessarily shine through in performance. There is heart here, despite everything, but it's mostly a "both sides" farce. Still Criterion takes the opportunity to include an interview with Laurence Senelick, author of The Changing Room: Sex, Drag and Theatre, who gives a very interesting history of drag and gender-nonconformity that helps contextualize La Cage in its time, even if it doesn't quell our troubles with the film's politics.
Movie of the Year: 1996The Birdcage (feat. Andrea Thompson from A Reel Of One's Own!)The Movie of the Year podcast takes a deep dive into The Birdcage (1996), a groundbreaking comedy that blends family dynamics, farce, and fearless LGBTQ+ representation. In this episode, the hosts explore how The Birdcage helped shift mainstream perceptions of queerness in the '90s, all while delivering standout performances from Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and showcasing the directorial mastery of Mike Nichols. Whether you're watching the film for the first time or revisiting it, this episode offers a thoughtful and engaging look at why The Birdcage continues to matter.Listen to the episode now:[Podcast Player Embed Here]Gender, Sexuality, and Queer Representation in The BirdcageThe podcast opens with an in-depth discussion of how The Birdcage portrays gender and sexuality with both humor and dignity. At a time when LGBTQ+ characters were often relegated to the margins of pop culture, The Birdcage celebrated queer life, drag culture, and same-sex relationships. The hosts explore the film's role in pushing boundaries and normalizing visibility, particularly in a cultural moment still defined by Don't Ask, Don't Tell and lingering AIDS-era stigma.Robin Williams in One of His Most Subtle, Heartfelt RolesKnown for his exuberant performances, Robin Williams delivers one of his most emotionally restrained roles as Armand Goldman. The podcast explores how Williams balances warmth, wit, and gravitas, crafting a character who is both deeply human and quietly revolutionary. The hosts compare this performance to Williams' other work from the '90s and consider how his presence lends the film emotional credibility and depth.Mike Nichols' Directing BrillianceDirector Mike Nichols adapts the French farce La Cage aux Folles into a uniquely American satire, using timing, character dynamics, and visual composition to heighten both comedy and emotional impact. The hosts break down Nichols' directing choices, from rapid-fire dialogue to carefully choreographed scenes, showing how his vision shapes the film's tone and political commentary. Is The Birdcage Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts? One of the most spirited conversations in the episode centers on whether The Birdcage works because of its individual elements—such as the writing, performances, and production design—or because those elements merge into something greater. The hosts highlight iconic scenes like the chaotic dinner party and the nightclub sequences to show how the film achieves synergy between script, performance, and direction.Identity and the Meaning of LifeBeyond its sharp humor, The Birdcage asks deep questions about identity, authenticity, and acceptance. The hosts analyze the tension between performance and reality, especially in the context of Armand and Val's relationship, and explore how characters navigate the pressures of conformity and family expectations. This section connects the film to broader philosophical ideas about the meaning of life, love, and self-expression.Special Guest: Andrea Thompson from A Reel Of Our OwnJoining the discussion is film critic Andrea Thompson, founder of A Reel Of Our Own, a platform dedicated to amplifying marginalized voices in film. Andrea brings a fresh critical perspective to the episode, exploring how The Birdcage portrays queer identity with compassion, nuance, and humor. She also discusses the film's lasting influence on LGBTQ+ media and its place in queer film history. How The Birdcage Holds Up in 2024The podcast team revisits The Birdcage...

Today we have a very special guest. From the stages of off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway, from his unmistakable voice to his performances in 30+ movies, Harvey Fierstein has spent a lifetime telling stories that matter. With four Tony Awards to his name—two for writing, two for acting—his work in Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray has redefined representation on stage. But beyond the accolades, there's the man: a Brooklyn-born artist whose journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and an unyielding belief in telling the truth. Harvey also has a deep love for sewing and costume design. Before becoming famous Fierstein studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a costume designer in the off-off-Broadway world. He has spoken about his passion for sewing in interviews, reminiscing about how he used to design and create costumes for drag performers and theater productions which helped shape his deep understanding of theatrical presentation and character development. His early work in costume design was part of his immersion in the vibrant New York theater community of the 1970s, where he collaborated with experimental and LGBTQ+ artists.Even as his career in theater took off with Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, sewing remained a part of his life. He has mentioned that working with fabric and creating garments is a meditative and creative outlet for him. His appreciation for costume design also extends to his theatrical work, where he often acknowledges the impact of great costume designers in bringing characters to life.So today we go beyond the footlights to explore the moments that made him—his early days, the influence of his parents, why Ridgefield, Connecticut became his adopted hometown and, why sewing has been an anchoring thread in his life. (2:15) We welcome the inimitable Harvey Fierstein! He shares how he first picked up sewing—starting with an industrial machine in his father's handkerchief factory—before setting his sights on becoming a Disney animator. But, things changed for him and as Harvey puts it, “Life only changes when you're brave enough to say yes.”(5:27) A deep dive into Harvey's quilting journey, from discovering HGTV and Alex Anderson to creating story-driven quilts today. His first quilt? Alex Anderson's Strips that Sizzle!(9:25) Growing up in a conservative Jewish household, Harvey learned the power of storytelling from his family. Education, art, music, and Broadway were all part of his upbringing, shaping the creative force he became.(11:45) Family isn't just who you're born to—it's also who you find. Harvey talks about his “found family” in the theatre, the people who call him “mama” and “papa,” and what it means to always be true to yourself.(13:32) Ever wonder what a Harvey Fierstein Stitch & Bitch session looks like? He spills all about his quilting experiments and creative process.(16:03) From bold colors to playful designs, Harvey shares his favorite fabrics and how he keeps things fresh alternating between challenging and just plain silly projects.(20:15) Picking a favorite quilt is like picking a favorite child—but Harvey gives it a shot!(23:20) The costumes that left a mark: Harvey reflects on the magic of theatrical costumes, the collaborative art of design, and why theatre itself is an act of faith.(27:07) Favorite roles—on stage, in film, and yes, even Death to Smoochy!(30:30) Writing his memoir I Was Better Last Night was a journey in itself. Harvey shares what inspired him to put his life on paper.(31:20) When did he finally feel accepted? And what really led him to move Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway? It's not the story you think!(32:31) A mother always knows! The moment Harvey's mom saw her own earrings on him during Torch Song Trilogy—and her priceless reaction.(34:00) What's the secret to his success? According to Harvey, it's all about taking that unexpected fork in the road.(38:38) The quilting class that changed everything: What Harvey learned from Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Liza Lucy.(39:10) Quilting vs. theatre—two creative worlds, two very different communities. Harvey compares the two.(40:54) The key to keeping every performance fresh? Harvey reveals how he does it.(43:06) Why Bridgefield, CT has been home for 40 years—and how Harvey's house reflects is unique perspective on life and art.(46:00) “As much as it hurts, tell the truth.” Harvey explains how this philosophy, shaped by his father, has guided his life and career.(47:25) What's next—what's left on Harvey's bucket list?(52:18) Want to connect with Harvey? Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 87 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by our Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson to discuss the next film in their Mike Nichols series, The Birdcage (1996). For the better part of two decades, Mike Nichols was chasing the idea of directing some version of the iconic play, La Cage aux Folles. Nichols called the play “one of the greatest comedy structures” of all time, and knew he to be involved with it somehow. So in the mid-1990s, he was able to convince the studios and producers to let him make an American remake of the play and have his longtime, iconic stage collaborator, Elaine May, to write the script; and thus The Birdcage was born. Centering around a gay Miami couple whose son is set to marry the daughter of a conservative U.S. senator, The Birdcage is a groundbreaking, iconic comedy that remains hilarious and timely to this day thanks to the incredible ensemble cast, May's sharp script, and Nichols steady direction bringing it all together. Ryan, Jay, and Erik discuss their thoughts on the film, what their favorite performance is in the movie, how Nichols was able to wrangle Robin Williams' persona in, the dozens of iconic lines, the entire third act of the film, and tangents, tangents, tangents. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h55m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Mike Nichols with a review of his next film, Primary Colors. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
