Marc Summers believes that if he didn't have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), he wouldn't be where he is today. He looks back into the humble beginnings of his diverse career, his struggles with severe OCD, battles with cancer, and his resilience that ultimately defined his career journey. Marc highlights the unique aspects of “Double Dare”, how he landed the job, and his creative input in the physical challenges and the show's distinctive nose that's supposedly modeled after his own. His off-Broadway show, “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” written by Alex Brightman and featuring music by Drew Gasparini, showcases his life, including the various challenges he faced throughout, from a car crash where he broke every bone in his face to the stigma of having obsessive-compulsive disorder on his career. It also touched on his early career as a magician and comedian, his experiences at the Comedy Store alongside legends like Dave Letterman and Robin Williams, and the supportive role his wife played in his life and career for over 50 years. He discusses the show's exploration of overcoming obstacles and the theme of perseverance–traits that Marc takes pride in. Director Chad Rabinovitz and composer Drew Gasparini talk about their collaboration on "The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers", including the creative process and thematic elements behind bringing the show to fruition. Chad reminisces about his childhood admiration for Marc, his dream of participating in "Double Dare", and the journey from being a fan to collaborating with Marc, Drew, and Alex Brightman in creating and directing the show. Drew shares how a summer stock production of "Grease" brought him and Marc together, the immersive nature of the production, intertwining the nostalgic elements of "Double Dare" with heartfelt storytelling about Marc's life, and his unique perspective as the composer of the show. Marc Summers is a TV personality, comedian, game show host, producer, and talk show host known from the original “Double Dare” game show on Nickelodeon, and as the host of “Unwrapped” on the Food Network. He was the executive producer for Food Network's “Dinner: Impossible” and “Restaurant: Impossible', and now he has an off-Broadway, almost one-man show called “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” written by Alex Brightman, and with music by Drew Gasparini. In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

Alex Brigthman is no stranger to diving headfirst into Broadway shows based on beloved titles—after all, he's a two-time Tony nominee for leading roles in “School of Rock” and “Beetlejuice.” But his latest project is in a bigger boat altogether. “The Shark Is Broken,” a new play that opened August 10th, captures the behind-the-scenes turmoil of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster, “Jaws.” Co-written by Ian Shaw—who also stars as his father, Robert—the show sees Brightman donning the sweater of 70s-era Richard Dreyfuss alongside Colin Donnell as Roy Scheider. “You can't turn your head in any city without seeing some [“Jaws”] shirt, hat, license plate. So I know that's a big deal, and the added pressure for me is that I'm playing the one person who's still alive who has a chance to see it,” Brigthman tells us. “ ‘Pressure' is the right word, but it's not a pressure that terrifies me. It's interesting, and I'm always excited about doing new things. This version of a new thing is like tight-rope walking with somebody's child.” On this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, Brightman gives us a glimpse of his intensive character-creation process, as well as a backstage look at the most emotionally fraught moment in “The Shark Is Broken.” --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Beetlejuice will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Every Saturday morning, Beetlejuice was my go-to cartoon, and my VHS of the movie practically melted from being watched so much. I had the action figures, the soundtrack, and the Halloween costume (as a child and as an adult). It wasn't only my quintessential gateway horror movie, but it also shaped a lifelong unapologetic appreciation for all things weird and macabre. The movie had a “lightning in a bottle” combination of a devilishly rebellious spirit and a singularity of vision that introduced the world to the wonders of Tim Burton. It was and forever will be an iconic and magical movie and a very important part of me.  The movie is just as sacred to countless others for all of the same reasons, which is likely why the Beetlejuice sequels and remakes have remained in production hell for decades. How can you possibly reimagine a classic that means so much to so many people? The answer: turn it into a musical. Despite being a little apprehensive at first, what struck me within the first ten minutes of Beetlejuice: the Musical was that it was developed with a tremendous amount of love and respect for the original movie. The show encompasses all of the many facets of what made the movie so great while expanding on the story in very inventive ways. It even has several nods to the cartoon, which just made me happy. This is a killer show, and I urge you to go see it if you're in the New York area. The costumes, the music, the humor, and the insanely elaborate Burtonesque sets and visuals are an overwhelming and blissful experience for fans of the original, plus the anarchistic spirit of lewdness and rudeness from the movie is retained in full force. The show will be on tour beginning in December so if you can't make it to New York, check and see if it's coming your way at: beetlejuicebroadway.com/tour. The show is ignited by the performance of Alex Brightman as Beetlejuice. Alex Brightman is an actor, singer, and two-time Tony Award Nominated Actor. He was nominated for his roles on Broadway as Dewey Finn in the musical adaptation of School of Rock and as the title character in Beetlejuice the Musical. After shuttering due to COVID, Beetlejuice is back on Broadway. We sat down with Alex to catch up on what the experience was like as well as how he created his take on the iconic & beloved character of Beetlejuice. Please enjoy this interview with Alex Brightman.    ----- Produced by Simpler Media

This week, as a lovely pairing with our last episode on the Stephen Sondheim masterpiece: Company, the gays are taking a left turn into the spoof realm. Today, they're talking about the episode from season three, of the hilarious mockumentary comedy series: Documentary Now, which gives the fictionalized account of the cast recording of the (very) short-lived Broadway musical: CO-OP! The episode is itself, a parody of the documentary about the grueling recording of the original cast album of Company. The hilarious score for CO-OP (not COOP), was partially written by comedic geniuses Seth Meyers and John Mulaney (who also plays a parody of Sondheim to great effect). The gays talk about the amazing cast, which includes a mix of comedians and Broadway celebs such as: Renee Elise Goldsberry, Alex Brightman, Paula Pell, Richard Kind, and more! Arron and Zacary go through all the hilarious songs, and of course rate the episode on the trusty “Gay-o-meter”. To close out the show, it's Arron's turn to surprise Zacary with a surprise video for them to watch and react to! It's a real fun, Broadway romp today, so be sure to tune in!

Hi friends, this week we're honoring the life and legacy of Stephen Sondheim. The luminary musical theatre composer and lyricist passed away on Friday, November 26th, at the age of 91. Today I'm bringing you behind the scenes at Sunday for Sondheim, a tribute from the Broadway community. You'll hear from Fergie L. Philippe, Erich Bergen, and Brian Stokes Mitchell about Sondheim's impact on their lives… Lin-Manuel Miranda reads from Sondheim's book: “Look, I Made a Hat!” and the Broadway community's rendition of, “Sunday,” from Sunday in the Park with George sung in it's entirety. To watch the performance, head over to bwaySHO.com. Thank you, Sondheim. There truly are giants in the sky. Thanks for listening to the 32nd episode of bwaySHO: The Podcast!
