Broadway has body issues. What is a Broadway Body? Broadway has long preserved the ideology of the "Broadway Body": the hyper-fit, exceptionally able, triple-threat performer who represents how Broadway musicals favor certain kinds of bodies. Casting is always a political act, situated within a power structure that gives preference to the Broadway Body. In Broadway Bodies: A Critical History of Conformity (Oxford UP, 2023), author Ryan Donovan explores how ability, sexuality, and size intersect with gender, race, and ethnicity in casting and performance. To understand these intersectional relationships, he poses a series of questions: Why did A Chorus Line, a show that sought to individuate dancers, inevitably make dancers indistinguishable? How does the use of fat suits in musicals like Dreamgirls and Hairspray stigmatize fatness? What were the political implications of casting two straight actors as the gay couple in La Cage aux Folles in 1983? How did deaf actors change the sound of musicals in Deaf West's Broadway revivals? Whose bodies does Broadway cast and whose does it cast aside? In answering these questions, Broadway Bodies tells a history of Broadway's inclusion of various forms of embodied difference while revealing its simultaneous ambivalence toward non-conforming bodies. A wild, effervescent, absinthe-soaked novel that tells of the life of the extraordinary artist Chaim SoutineSteve Stern's astonishing new novel The Village Idiot begins on a glorious spring day in Paris 1917. Amid the carnage of World War I, some of the foremost artists of the age have chosen to stage a boat race. At the head of the regatta is Amedeo Modigliani, seated regally in a bathtub pulled by a flock of canvasback ducks. But unbeknownst to the competition, he has a secret advantage: his young friend, the immigrant painter Chaim Soutine, is hauling the tub from underwater. Soutine, an unwashed, misfit artist (who incidentally can't swim) has been persuaded by the Italian to don a ponderous diving suit and trudge along the floor of the river Seine. Disoriented and confused by the artificial air in his helmet Chaim stumbles through the events of his past and future life. It's quite an extraordinary life. From his impoverished beginnings in an East European shtetl to his equally destitute days in Paris during the Années Folles, the Crazy Years, from the Cinderella patronage of the American collector Albert Barnes, who raises him from poverty to international attention, to his perilous flight from the Nazi occupation of France, Chaim Soutine remains driven by his unrelenting passion to paint. To be sure, there are notable distractions, such as his unlikely friendship with Modigliani, who drags him from brothels to midnight felonies to a duel at dawn; there are the romances with remarkable women who compete with and sometimes salvage his obsession. But there is also, always on the horizon, the coming storm that threatens to sweep away Chaim and a generation of gifted Jewish refugees from a tradition that would outlaw their longing to make art. Wildly inventive, as funny as it is heart-breaking, The Village Idiot is a luminous fever-dream of a novel, steeped in the heady atmosphere of a Paris that was the cultural capital of the universe, a place where anything seemed possible.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781612199825

Excitement and depth returned to "Westworld" in a big way as our favorite host duo—Stubbs and Bernard—began their quest to save humanity. In this Season 4 Episode 3 Deep Dive, the Shat Crew explores what Bernard saw in his Sublime visions and how that impacts our perception of time. We also rejoin Maeve to explore the new park, ask what makes Caleb so special (again), dissect the science behind the flies and the low-frequency resonance generator, and debate whether we just saw a grown-up Frankie. Listen to more great music from Simon: www.soundcloud.com/simonsteric Westworld Episode 3 Summary:Maeve and Caleb find the Temperance park to follow events similar to Westworld and sneak in among killed hosts to enter the maintenance areas. There, Maeve senses something is still off as Dolores' attack on Westworld is also mimicked, and they find yet another level where it appears human captives are forced to act on sound, killing themselves. Bernard meets Akecheta in the Sublime, who informs him of the infinite possibilities that lead to destruction but one path which doesn't. Bernard wakes, years later in the real world. He and Ashley follow steps that Bernard sees as taking the right path, including meeting up with a human resistance to find a weapon. Uwade and Frankie pack to leave their home with the help of Caleb's friend Carver. Frankie senses something is wrong with Carver and finds the human Carver's dead body. Telling her mom, the two hide from the fake Carver and kill him. Caleb discovers Frankie as one of the test subjects, but Maeve discovers too late there is something off, and Frankie is revealed as a host, exposing Caleb to the droning sound of flies. Beyond Westworld – An Aftershow companion to the HBO series Westworld
Années Folles refers to the crazy years in France during the 20s, or the Roaring 20s aka Golden Age in the US. For Westworld, it could be referring to the newly constructed park emulating that timeframe, or it could be referencing the crazy years Bernard has spent inside the Sublime learning all of the possible scenarios that could eradicate the human species. One of those. On this episode of the Beyond Westworld podcast, we explore the revelation of this ominous fly conspiracy, and what it all means for Caleb and Maeve as they are now in the belly of the beast with no foreseeable way out. Also, Bernard and Stubbs embark on a side quest to meet with C and J, revolutionaries living on Condemned Lands that might hold a key to the survival of the human race. Keep Connected Each week Beyond Westworld will take a deep look at both the minor and major plot lines and character elements within the riveting HBO series, Westworld. No better way to celebrate Pride Month with the movie club than to talk about the colorful and energetic classic “The Birdcage.” Joining Matt to explore this flamboyant 90s feel good film is comedy duo Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp. The remake of the French film "La Cage aux Folles" presents a challenge to family values for South Beach drag club owner Armand (Robin Williams) and his life partner, Albert (Nathan Lane). The couple is determined to appear straight for their son and his conservative father-in-law-to-be, which proves to be nothing short of a production. With equal parts levity and homage, this week's movie club meeting understands the insanity of this film in queer culture cannon. Don't forget to submit your hot takes for our next movie club meeting on the new “Father of the Bride” with #maxmovieclub to @hbomaxmovies on Twitter and Instagram! Watch on HBO via HBO Max: “The Birdcage” until July 31st, 2022 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
HARVEY FIERSTEIN wrote the books ( or adapted the books ) for the Broadway musicals Funny Girl, Kinky Boots. Newsies as well as Torch Song Trilogy (Tony®, Drama Desk, and OBIE Awards), La Cage aux Folles (Tony® and Drama Desk Awards), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award), A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations), Safe Sex (Ace Award), Legs Diamond, Spookhouse, Flatbush Tosca, Common Ground, and more. His political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide, The Huffington Post, and broadcast on PBS's “In the Life”. His children's book, The Sissy Duckling, is now in its fifth printing. As an actor, Mr. Fierstein is known worldwide for his performances in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, and on stage in Hairspray (Tony Award®), Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony Award®), and TV shows such as “Smash,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Good Wife,” “Cheers” (Emmy nomination), “The Simpsons,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Acclaimed originally for his groundbreaking writing and performance in his 1981 Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein has refined and redefined the persona of the drag queen in the theater. Two years later, Fierstein brought that insight and humor into his book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, this “is the first Broadway musical ever to give center stage to a homosexual love affair – but don't go expecting an earthquake. The show at the Palace is the schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical Broadway has seen since ‘Annie,' and it's likely to be just as popular with children of all ages.” Fierstein subsequently wrote the book for Legs Diamond (1988) with music and lyrics by Peter Allen, who also starred in the show. He did not return to Broadway until 2002, when he took on the role of Edna Turnblad in the musical adaptation of Hairspray (book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman). According to Ben Brantley, Fierstein's performance as Edna “is not just a cross-dressing sight gag. She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.” After playing Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and starred in the 2008 musical, A Catered Affair. As a writer and actor, Fierstein has won three Drama Desk Awards and four Tonys®, most recently for his portrayal of Edna in Hairspray. His most recent memoir is called I Was Better Last Night. When Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein was growing up in New York City in the 60s, he was surrounded by the beginnings of the gay rights movement, and protest art and avant-garde theater was the norm. "I didn't know that being gay was sad until I got out into the world and they told me that," he said in our interview. "All the gay people I know are really kind of happy." And writing from that lens has informed his work ever since. In his new memoir, I Was Better Last Night, Harvey shares the six year journey to get his breakthrough play, Torch Song Trilogy, on Broadway, and shares other behind the scenes stories from hit Broadway plays like Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof, and La Cage aux Folles. He also told me about his relationship with his younger brother turned business manager, why he's happily single and sober, and how he thinks he'll be remembered.
