Sara and I met through my husband (then boyfriend) when they lived together post-college. A beloved classmate of Adam's, we followed Sara's career as she stunningly bounced from National Tour to Broadway to Paper Mill or Nyack or wherever the work brought her, and at every turn she was nothing short of brilliant. Currently starring in the magnificent Broadway production of "Water for Elephants," Sara sat with me between shows to chat about her journey; the ups and downs, heartbreaks and roses. No one can attest more to the nonlinear nature of this business, and I defy you to find someone who's navigated it with more grace, poise, humor or self-awareness than this extraordinary artist. Sara has created roles in the Broadway productions of "Water For Elephants," "Seussical," "Nine" (Broadway revival, replacing Jane Krakowski as Carla), "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," and tours of "The Addams Family," "Fosse," and "101 Dalmations." Sara Gettelfinger's Broadway debut came in 2000 with the musical Seussical. And she worked steadily on Broadway through the years until she and I met and worked together on The Addams Family national tour in 2011. But then she had to take a break from acting, a break from New York City as well. And except for an Off-Broadway musical in 2014, Sara focused instead on her life and let the career she loved so much take a back seat. She's now back on Broadway in a new musical, Water for Elephants, that opened at the Imperial Theatre on March 21st. We sat down during the preview process, and she openly talks about the struggle and warning signs that led up to her long absence as well as the lessons she'd had to learn, both personally and professionally. Regional theater is really the lifeblood of the performing arts in America. It's the place where we get that first spark and inspiration to become lifelong theatergoers or decide to become actors ourselves. But in recent years regional theaters have been struggling to find audiences and to just stay open. The pandemic caused some to close their doors for good, and the ones that remain suffered through uncertain futures. Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas was one such theater that canceled their season and lost millions of dollars in revenue and donations. But it slowly came back in 2021 and is about to start a new season under the leadership of its Tony-nominated artistic director, Dan Knechtges. He previously directed and choreographed Broadway shows like Xanadu and 110 in the Shade as well as his Broadway debut with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I've worked with him twice: at The Muny doing Seussical and then at TUTS with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. We not only discuss Xanadu and his tenure at TUTS but we also delve into a creative crisis he faced, where he almost quit the business. My first conversation is with Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who I am so grateful to have met for the first time in this interview. We had a wonderful discussion about her 2009 production of Ragtime that started at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and then transferred to Broadway later that year. Though that revival had a short run, she did receive a Tony nomination for best direction. The second conversation is with Dan Knetgches, and we have worked together on a couple of shows. The first was Seussical at The Muny in St. Louis, and the other was How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Theater Under the Stars in Houston, where Dan is now the Artistic Director. He and I discuss his 2008 Broadway production of Xanadu, which earned him a Tony nomination for best choreography. It's directors like Dan and Marcia who put in countless hours of work to bring a show to life, and they deserve our recognition and gratitude, which is what this special episode is all about. Because without them, musical theater wouldn't be the magical experience that we know and love. I'm 12 years old. It's summertime, and we're on our annual family trip to Bainbridge Island off the coast of Seattle. I love going on these trips, and one of my favorite things about them is getting to see family friends Bob and Denise perform in a different play. This particular summer they're doing The Pirates of Penzance. After the show is over, Bob and Denise walk up to me and ask, “Kymberlee, what was your favorite part?” I'm thinking that since they're both in it, I don't really want to pick sides. So I talk about everything: the amazing set design, Bob's incredible costume, Denise's epic singing, the cool set, the fantastic dancing, the memorable characters... After each mention, Bob and Denise just stare at me. But I can't pick just one thing; I love it all! Years later, I realize that what I loved most was… The live experience of story! Seeing it played out right in front of my eyes and ears made each story unforgettable. My special guest today, Mary Lauren, tells stories in multifaceted ways. She directs them, writes them, produces them, performs them, and choreographs them. And in this episode of the Storytelling School podcast, we dive into her tips and techniques on bringing stories to life with questions like: How do you know if a particular story you want to tell is important? What should you always do when you get handed a script for your role? What's the benefit of playing darker characters? And what can you do when you're struggling to connect to your story? What you will learn in this episode: How you can bring truth to a character in your story What storytelling aspect can initially stymie a new storyteller Why listening is the key to everything as a performer and storyteller Who is Mary? Mary Lauren is a passionate and multifaceted artist who loves to tell stories. She has had work seen Off-Broadway and regionally as a director, writer, performer, producer, and choreographer. She's a proud member of the Actors' Equity Association (AEA) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Mary has written several new works, in addition to choreographing and acting as the lead dancer in the short film Dream of Spring (which has been featured in festivals all over the world). Some other acting credits include: The Last 5 Years, Gypsy, Sarah Was Mine, Sophia!, My Shadow and Me, and Hamlet. For almost 20 years, Mary has directed and educated artists. As artistic director of Heart String Theatrical, she created the streaming live/filmed piece Loving You Always. Her cabarets have raised money for artists and for organizations including the NAACP and ACLU. Mary also serves as the Youth Artistic Director at AMT Theatre, a new Off-Broadway Theater in Times Square. She loves working with young artists and finds inspiration from their exuberance and stories. Over 50 productions with young artists have been directed by her including original pieces and published works like Seussical, Annie, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Beauty and the Beast, and more.
