With a gazillion-dollar smile, easy, absolutely effortless charm, Tony Award-winning Cady Huffman took this adoring fan and turned me into an even bigger one (who knew that was possible), and dare I say (she said), a friend. *Sigh* A masterful storyteller, without even trying, I was delightfully mesmerized, hanging on her every word. Her remembrances of Bob Fosse, auditioning for him, being cast by him, dancing with him (WHAT!), and drinking beside him, left me breathless. Tommy Tune, another genius, and The Will Rogers Follies, her first Tony nomination, her most vivid remembrance of finding out is about the guy she woke up with. So damn human at every turn. I love this woman! And of course, her Tony turn, also winning the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics' Circle Award, for The Producers, where I first witnessed Cady's stunningly sexy, adorable Ulla, the last preview before opening night. The show against which I've measured all others. To date, none have exceeded the laughs, the spectacle, and the non-stop thrills. In a word, it was… perfection! Cady told us about Susan Stroman, Mel Brooks, Nathan Lane. and our mutual friend, Wendy Waring, still in Cady's world today. We talked Kay Cole, Samantha's director and OG of A Chorus Line, who sang, At the Ballet, which could have been Cady's theme song for many of her days, La Cage Aux Folles, her first Broadway play, the wild backstage antics, and auditioning for Cy Coleman, hysterical! Dame Edna! Steel Pier, Sting! We talked about growing up in Santa Barbara, early family struggles, her first play and her first line, ballet, opera, and Cady mastering each. Her brother Linus, childhood friends Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz, and the incredible Kathleen Wilhoite, my long-time grown-up pal. Before we signed off, we talked the reals… aging, food, booze, programs, Ozempic, and a little-known side effect that worked for the good. Cady Huffman is living my life. My childhood dream life. Better than I could have ever imagined. Tonight, I got to live it vicariously through her. Thank you, Cady, for that, for everything! Sometimes Criterion shows us a single film from a director we'd never seen before and leaves us wanting for the rest of our project, so often actually that we call them "one and dones". But then sometimes Criterion shows us a movie by Edouard Molinaro and it's fine that they aren't going to show us another. La Cage aux Folles (1978) is a funny movie, and is also a film that wants to show a very normal family that happens to be LGBTQ. It even may succeed, despite the fact that nearly everyone involved in writing, directing, and performing seems to be a straight guy who holds the material in some amount of disdain, though a disdain that doesn't necessarily shine through in performance. There is heart here, despite everything, but it's mostly a "both sides" farce. Still Criterion takes the opportunity to include an interview with Laurence Senelick, author of The Changing Room: Sex, Drag and Theatre, who gives a very interesting history of drag and gender-nonconformity that helps contextualize La Cage in its time, even if it doesn't quell our troubles with the film's politics.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE BIRDCAGE (1996), from a script by Elaine May and directed by Mike Nichols, the story is based on the play "La Cage Aux Folles" by Jean Poiret. Armand Goldman (Robin Williams), the gay owner of a drag nightclub in South Beach, and his flamboyant partner and star performer Albert (Nathan Lane) agree to play it straight when Armand's son, Val (Dan Futterman) announces his engagement to the daughter of ultra-conservative Senator Keeley (Gene Hackman). Chaos and comedy ensue as the couple attempts to conceal their true identities during a dinner with their future in-laws. Ultimately, love and authenticity prevail as the truth is revealed and grudgingly accepted.
The progressive and disruptive social movements of the 1960s and 70s had a huge impact on the Broadway Musical and were reflected back into the culture by them. These include the Civil Rights movement, Women's Liberation, Black Power, and the Gay Liberation Movement. The Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 brought gay issues into the mainstream and during the 1970s LGBTQ+ people would become “out, loud, and proud” in significant numbers. Of course, it makes sense that this new visibility and feeling of liberation would be felt on Broadway where there had always been a large representation of queer people throughout the industry, including in positions of leadership. As a result queer characters and stories began appearing on Broadway -- especially in plays -- but also in a few musicals as well. In this episode I explore the growing visibility of openly queer content on Broadway in musicals such as Hair, Coco, Applause, Seesaw, A Chorus Line, La Cage Aux Folles, and the works of William Finn. I also recount the devastating effect that the AIDS Crisis had on Broadway during the 1980s and 90s when a whole generation of creative talent was eliminated or sidelined by the disease. AIDS claimed the lives of hundreds of actors, singers, musicians, stage managers, production assistants, and designers -- as well as scores of dancers that had been trained by Bennett, Fosse, Champion, and Tune and might have one day become influential directors and choreographers themselves. The devastation of AIDS opened the door to the “British Invasion” that would soon dominate Broadway. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Adapted from the French smash hit of stage screen "La Cage Aux Folles," this raucous farce about two VERY different families about to join via marriage was directed by the late, great Mike Nichols who directed modern classics of various genres including The Graduate, Catch-22, Working Girl, Silkwood, and Carnal Knowledge. It was a smash hit back in the spring of 1996 and was also one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to be lead by gay characters. What helped was that those two leads happened to be the legendary Oscar-winning comedic superstar Robin Williams and the Tony-winning comedic mastermind Nathan Lane who play Armand and Albert who own a successful club in Miami Beach named....you guessed it...The Birdcage. They just found out that their son Val (Dan Futterman) who just got home from college is about get married....to Barbara (Calista Flockhart) who happens to be the daughter of right-wing U.S. Senator Keeley (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman) and his equally right-wing wife played by Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest. And GUESS who's coming to dinner in Miami Beach? :)Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

June's bustin' out all over, and we're bustin' out one last classic episode before we get back to some new episodes coming later this month. And since June is Pride Month and the month of the Tony Awards, we're serving up a "two birds, one stone" situation by reairing an episode that falls squarely in both categories: La Cage aux Folles!~~~In honor of pride month, this week is a special episode focused on the franchise that began life as a landmark French boulevard stage comedy, and was then adapted into acclaimed films and musical. And even though the love story at the center of the story was between two men, it has captured the hearts of audiences from all sexual orientations. It also answers the age old question: what happens when you put the composer of Hello Dolly!, the director of West Side Story, and Edna Turnlad in a room together? The answer: Broadway magic.Rob teaches Ray about the history of Jean Poiret's play La Cage Aux Folles and its many adaptations; how competing producers (including ThWAT favorite Allan Carr) fought to secure the chance to both film and musicalize La Cage; Jerry Herman's hummable, Tony-winning score and the anthem it provided the gay rights movement; Nathan Lane's breakout movie performance; and all the ways in which this property has been and continues to be celebrated by audiences across the world. If you like what we are doing, please support us on Patreon.TEAMRay HebelRobert W.
