The progressive and disruptive social movements of the 1960s and 70s had a huge impact on the Broadway Musical and were reflected back into the culture by them. These include the Civil Rights movement, Women's Liberation, Black Power, and the Gay Liberation Movement. The Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 brought gay issues into the mainstream and during the 1970s LGBTQ+ people would become “out, loud, and proud” in significant numbers. Of course, it makes sense that this new visibility and feeling of liberation would be felt on Broadway where there had always been a large representation of queer people throughout the industry, including in positions of leadership. As a result queer characters and stories began appearing on Broadway -- especially in plays -- but also in a few musicals as well. In this episode I explore the growing visibility of openly queer content on Broadway in musicals such as Hair, Coco, Applause, Seesaw, A Chorus Line, La Cage Aux Folles, and the works of William Finn. I also recount the devastating effect that the AIDS Crisis had on Broadway during the 1980s and 90s when a whole generation of creative talent was eliminated or sidelined by the disease. AIDS claimed the lives of hundreds of actors, singers, musicians, stage managers, production assistants, and designers -- as well as scores of dancers that had been trained by Bennett, Fosse, Champion, and Tune and might have one day become influential directors and choreographers themselves. The devastation of AIDS opened the door to the “British Invasion” that would soon dominate Broadway. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Adapted from the French smash hit of stage screen "La Cage Aux Folles," this raucous farce about two VERY different families about to join via marriage was directed by the late, great Mike Nichols who directed modern classics of various genres including The Graduate, Catch-22, Working Girl, Silkwood, and Carnal Knowledge. It was a smash hit back in the spring of 1996 and was also one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to be lead by gay characters. What helped was that those two leads happened to be the legendary Oscar-winning comedic superstar Robin Williams and the Tony-winning comedic mastermind Nathan Lane who play Armand and Albert who own a successful club in Miami Beach named....you guessed it...The Birdcage. They just found out that their son Val (Dan Futterman) who just got home from college is about get married....to Barbara (Calista Flockhart) who happens to be the daughter of right-wing U.S. Senator Keeley (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman) and his equally right-wing wife played by Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest. And GUESS who's coming to dinner in Miami Beach? :)Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

June's bustin' out all over, and we're bustin' out one last classic episode before we get back to some new episodes coming later this month. And since June is Pride Month and the month of the Tony Awards, we're serving up a "two birds, one stone" situation by reairing an episode that falls squarely in both categories: La Cage aux Folles!~~~In honor of pride month, this week is a special episode focused on the franchise that began life as a landmark French boulevard stage comedy, and was then adapted into acclaimed films and musical. And even though the love story at the center of the story was between two men, it has captured the hearts of audiences from all sexual orientations. It also answers the age old question: what happens when you put the composer of Hello Dolly!, the director of West Side Story, and Edna Turnlad in a room together? The answer: Broadway magic.Rob teaches Ray about the history of Jean Poiret's play La Cage Aux Folles and its many adaptations; how competing producers (including ThWAT favorite Allan Carr) fought to secure the chance to both film and musicalize La Cage; Jerry Herman's hummable, Tony-winning score and the anthem it provided the gay rights movement; Nathan Lane's breakout movie performance; and all the ways in which this property has been and continues to be celebrated by audiences across the world. If you like what we are doing, please support us on Patreon.TEAMRay HebelRobert W. This is a special Encore Episode in celebration of PRIDE month. The Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 thrust the issue of Gay Rights into the mainstream and as a result, during the 1970s queer people became “out, loud, and proud” in significant numbers. In fact, all of the progressive and disruptive social movements of the 1960s & 70s — Civil Rights, Women's Liberation, Black Power, Anti-War — had significant impacts on Broadway and were vibrantly reflected back into the culture by the hit musicals of the era in both subtle and overt ways. So, it makes sense that this new LGBTQ+ visibility and joyous feeling of liberation would also have a major impact on Broadway where queer people have alway been present in large numbers, including its highest levels of leadership. In this episode I explore the sudden and significant wave openly queer content on Broadway in groundbreaking shows such as Hair, Coco, Applause, Seesaw, A Chorus Line, La Cage Aux Folles, and Falsettos. The positive impact that these widely seen musicals had on gay liberation — especially the mega-hit A Chorus Line — should not be underestimated! I also relate the devastating effect that the AIDS Crisis had on Broadway during the 1980s & 90s, when an entire generation of Broadway directors, choreographers, composers, lyricists, bookwriters, and other other creative talent was eliminated or sidelined by the disease. AIDS also claimed the lives of hundreds of actors, singers, musicians, stage managers, production assistants, and designers — as well as scores of dancers that had been trained by Bennett, Fosse, Champion, and Tune and who might have become influential directors and/or choreographers themselves. The devastation of AIDS opened the door to the “British Invasion” that would soon dominate Broadway. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Disaffected fan favorite George Zamarripa joins Josh to talk about how a woke theater company in Denver made playing in La Cage Aux Folles a bloody nightmare. This is Part I of a two-part episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In honor of pride month, this week is a special episode focused on the franchise that began life as a landmark French boulevard stage comedy, and was then adapted into acclaimed films and musical. Book Vs. Movie: La Cage Aux Folles & The BirdcageThe Original Film and Broadway Musical Vs. the 1996 FilmThe “Month of Musicals” continues with the 1996 film The Birdcage, which took its influence from the play turned into Broadway musical La Cage Aux Folles. The original 1973 french play takes place in Saint-Tropez, where a gay couple meets an ultra-conservative family member. It was a huge hit in Paris, playing for over a year in 1973, and was made into a film in 1978. Originally written by Jean Poiret, the original played in Paris for over 1800 performances with Poiret and Michell Serrault as the leads Georges and Albin, aka “Zaza.” The 1978 film had Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi as the lead playing Renato Baldi to Serrault's Albin. It played to art houses across America. Poiret wanted to film the American version of the film, so he refused to sell the rights to the play but had no problem selling it as a musical. Grease producer Allan Carr helped bring the project to Broadway as a musical, with Harvey Fierstein writing the book. Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly & Mame) was a revered lyricist and songwriter who provided the music. Director Arthur Laurents helped to make the 1983 production a massive success, with the song “I Am What I Am” becoming a gay anthem. It's important to remember what the culture was like in 1984, and having a gay married couple running a drag nightclub being the protagonists was a huge deal in the Queer community. The idea that 40 years later, we have to fight ugly stereotypes about gay people and drag culture is dispiriting, but we are allies who will sing the work's praises. AND point out the hypocrisy happening in the news cycles today. The original production won the 1984 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, and in 2004, Best Revival of a Musical. (And in 2010 as well!) No less than comedy powerhouses Elaine May and Mike Nichols wrote and directed the 1996 filmed nonmusical adaptation, which stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as Arman and Albert Goldman. They run the most popular club in Miami and live with their housekeeper Agador (Hank Azaria). Their son Val (ugh--this character is the one bad spot in an otherwise joyous film) wants to marry his college girlfriend. Still, her parents are conservatives who fear his senate run will be badly affected by being associated with “that lifestyle.” (Some of this is dated and distressingly familiar.)Which did we like better between the previous versions of the story and the 1996 film? In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of La Cage Aux FollesThe era of the 80s and how gay people were played in pop cultureThe work of Nichols & MayThe cast of the 1996 Movie: Robin Williams (Armand,) Nathan Lane (Albert,) Gene Hackman (Senator Kevin Keeley,) Dianne Weist (Louise Keeley,) Dan Futterman (Val Goldman,) Calista Flockhart (Barbara Keeley,) Hank Aazaria (Agador Spartacus,) and Christine Baranski as Katharine Archer. The cast of the original Broadway show: George Hearn (Albin,) Gene Barry (Georges,) and John Weiner as Jean Michel.Clips used:Albert rehearses with ArmandThe Birdcage 1996 trailer George Hearn 1984 Tony Awards Awards “I Am What I Am”Albert rehearses with his “love goddess.”“Mrs. Coleman” shows upMusic: The Goldman Girls We Are Family Book Vs. Harvey Fierstein first questioned his gender when he was 7 years old. The Tony-award-winning playwright behind Broadway hits including "Kinky Boots" and "Newsies" recounts the story in his new memoir, "I Was Better Last Night."Fierstein brought queer characters to the stage and screen. He won Tonys for "Torch Song Trilogy" and "La Cage Aux Folles," both of which he wrote. The shows, which premiered in the 1980s, introduced gay relationships and characters to Broadway audiences.Off-stage, Fierstein was living through the AIDS epidemic, a harrowing and tragic experience that led to him turning away from show business and towards substance abuse. We talk to Fierstein about his career and take questions from you.Want to support 1A?
