As cities slowly come out from the pandemic, thus lifting many, if not all the restrictions, places such as Akron have a lot to work with. Dan Horrigan is the mayor of Akron, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to look at the subject of infrastructure, from the focus on downtown development to housing in the city limits. He also touched on projects like the sewers and the dollars that go towards them, as well as the future of the site that has housed Chapel Hill Mall for all these decades.

Citizens of Akron woke up Thursday morning to some sad news, as long-time Ward 1 councilman Rich Swirsky lost his battle with leukemia. He was 68 years old. Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the Ray Horner Morning Show for his usual Thursday radio visit, and he said Rich was a "true champion" in the city. He says Swirsky was very passionate about his duties in his ward, and that a city like Akron needs more people in public service who shared his passion. The mayor also touched on the police auditor position as far as enforcement goes, as well as the new corridor for Akron Children's Hospital and the future of the Chapel Hill Mall area.

It was recently announced that Chapel Hill Mall would be a site for mass vaccinations in the city of Akron, but as a few factors went into effect with the new owner, the site has been moved to the Summit County Fairgrounds. So what will be the future of Chapel Hill Mall? It is a question that has been mulling around Akron mayor Dan Horrigan's head for a while now, and he talked about it on the Ray Horner Morning Show. Horrigan, as well as the mayors of Tallmadge and Cuyahoga Falls, are working with the new owner on what will be invested into that area. With vaccinations continuing to increase, many folks are getting the itch to go places, whether it is a shopping mall or to downtown Akron for a concert in the park. Horrigan talked about the possibility of events as summer approaches, and how the city will spend their stimulus dollars.

Some states have already done away with their statewide mask mandate, and perhaps others may follow suit. But in Ohio, such measures are not on the radar for now, even though cases of COVID-19 are down and vaccine distribution is up. Akron mayor Dan Horrigan joined the Ray Horner Morning Show for his weekly visit, which hits on everything related to the coronavirus. Horrigan talked about the availability in obtaining the vaccine, as well as the increase in messaging to convince residents to take it. As for the gatherings, Horrigan says his staff is working with the governor for the safe return of these events as the cases trend down. The mayor also touched on the present and future use of the Chapel Hill Mall property, and how the East End project is coming along, even after much of the planning took a backseat during the pandemic.

Chapel Hill Mall is being sold once again, and according to the soon-to-be-previous owner, it will be sold for far less than he paid for it. But the area has experienced a massive downturn in recent years, even before the pandemic. What is the future of it? Dan Horrigan, the mayor of Akron, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about reconfiguring and the zoning of not only Chapel Hill Mall itself, but the area, as well. Horrigan hopes for the redevelopment to be a “job creator,” especially with its close proximity to Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge. He points to the redevelopment of the Rolling Acres area, from its dead mall status a decade ago to becoming an Amazon fulfillment hub. The mayor also touched on the “hot” real estate market in Summit County, as well as the possibility of outdoor events in 2021, with curfews being rescinded and people getting vaccinated.

http://wright.edu/news What started it all sits in the basement of Lee Furry’s Springboro home. It’s an unfinished model of the white, wedge-shaped Imperial Star Destroyer from the original “Star Wars” movie. A very good one. The destroyer sparked Furry’s interest in model-making when he was a 12-year-old boy and first saw it on the screen at a theater in the Chapel Hill Mall in Akron. He has turned that passion into an artistry that today has enabled him to sell his models for up to $5,000 to customers around the world. Furry believes the secret to his success is attention to detail. “It’s amazing how many models I see where the proportions are not correct. That’s what bothers me the most,” he said. “I will obsess over the smallest little parts on a model—for weeks sometimes—trying to get it right.” When he’s not working on models, the Wright State University motion pictures alumnus works as a videographer at WKEF-TV, where for the past 22 years he has captured images that tell stories about life in the Dayton area.
