Ever wonder why we take on debt knowing it will cost us — or why flashing a credit card can feel like flashing status? It's not just poor math or bad habits. It's biology, psychology, and marketing, all tangled together. In today's episode, we unpack the psychology of spending with Wright State University professor and author John Dinsmore, whose new book The Marketing of Debt: How They Get You breaks down the subtle — and not-so-subtle — ways marketers capitalize on our optimism, impulsivity, and desire for status. We talk about:Why your brain underestimates the pain of future debtHow credit card companies brand products to play on our egosWhy handling money can make us less generousThe hidden costs of “quiet luxury” and keeping up appearancesAnd how Dinsmore's own research found that just touching $20 bills increased testosterone and reduced charitable giving

As the demand for Career Tech education continues to grow in Ohio, Career Tech programs continue to struggle to attract and retain educators to serve students because of problems with the way most salary schedules are structured. Career Tech educators often have years or decades of prior experience in the private sector - and the expertise they can share with their students is invaluable as a result - but many do not have the advanced degrees that other educators who took a more traditional path to the classroom often do, so Career Tech educators' salaries often don't reflect the value they bring to our schools. The Greene County Career Center Education Association recently bargained a new kind of salary schedule and new contract language to change that, and now they're hoping other local associations will follow their lead.SEE THE GCCCEA COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT AND SALARY SCHEDULE | Greene County Career Center Education Association President Doug Picard is happy to show other local leaders what his association accomplished in its latest negotiations and share his insight about how it could be replicated for other educators across the state. They'd rather put money in savings than see a concert. They expect brands to share their worldviews. They will forgive mistakes, but NOT inauthenticity. These are just a few of the broad generalizations that Dr. Corey Seemiller has found in her studies of Gen Z. A professor and researcher at Wright State University, her insights have been featured in NPR, The New York Times, and Time Magazine, and she has published numerous works, including the acclaimed books Generation Z Goes to College and Generation Z Leads. In the global Gen Z study she led, Dr. Seemiller and her team engaged over 30,000 participants from 81 countries, making it one of the largest studies on this demographic.  Typically defined as those who were born between 1995-2010, these young people aged 15-30 constitute a growing percentage of consumer spending. And, as Gen Z comes of age, small businesses must tailor their marketing and branding to court this demographic. In this episode, we'll ask Dr. Seemiller: What are the core values and beliefs that define Gen Z? How does technology impact Gen Z's interactions with brands? How can small businesses create memorable interactions that foster loyalty? How should brands approach issues that are important to Gen Z? How will Gen Z evolve as consumers in the years ahead? This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. TITLE A Radically Transparent Computer Without Complex VLSI VENUE 1st IEEE Conference on Secure and Trustworthy CyberInfrastructure for IoT and Microelectronics (SaTC 2025), Wright State University, February 25-27, 2025. This is a recording of the final rehearsal that occurred three hours before this invited talk. No slides were used. ABSTRACT Foreign adversaries have colonized America's computers from at least 1986. Four decades later, online safety is the largest failure in the history of human engineering. Radical stewardship in cybersecurity would bring radical progress, but responsibility for losses will need to flow from the bottom up. The buck stops with victims, who must accept all blame for cyberattacks. Only then will people at risk properly vet the products and vendors they select. A leading challenge in stewardship is balancing the opaque, proprietary nature of VLSI complex logic with the owner's need for complete control. Since these aspects are incompatible and owner control is essential, it's necessary to design computers that avoid complex VLSI entirely. One such architecture, Dauug | 36, is being developed at Wright State University to deliver 36-bit computing, preemptive multitasking, paged virtual memory, and hundreds of opcodes, all without using a single microprocessor or anything like one. BIOGRAPHY Marc Abel is an engineer-scientist specializing in technology that supports civil rights, economic security, and geopolitical stability. He holds a 1991 B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science (focused on computer science) from Caltech, and a 2022 Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Wright State University. Marc is the sole inventor, architect, implementer, maintainer, documenter, and promoter of the Dauug | 36 open-source minicomputer for critical infrastructure. He is the original and still only author of Dauug | 36's firmware, designer and implementer of Dauug | 36's assembly language and assemblers, writer of several related software tools, especially open-source electronic design automation and simulation tools, and the sole author of Osmin, a real-time operating system (RTOS) kernel for the architecture. He is the writer of 200,000 words of system documentation, including his dissertation and its online continuation called The Dauug House. Provide feedback on this episode.

Show Notes Booker T. Washington once said: “An inch of progress is worth more than a yard of complaint.”  A once enslaved man who became an author and speaker in the post-Reconstruction Jim Crow-era South, Washington famously advocated against protest and agitation tactics meant to advance civil rights. Washington's position was that Black Americans should concentrate on economic progress, rather than desegregation efforts.   Washington believed that economic success would advance Black people in American society and protect them from the violence of the Jim Crow era.  However, this wasn't always—or even often—the case.  In a paper titled, “An Inch of Progress: Black Business and Black Accountants Fighting Jim Crow Violence,” researchers from the University of Denver have set out to set the record straight on how economics and accounting actually hurt or benefited Black Americans at the time. In this episode, Emma speaks with Daniels College of Business professor Tony Holder and history professor Kimberly Jones from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, plus grad student Mayowa Alabi, about their research into the history of racism and accounting. Anthony D. Holder, PhD, CPA (Inactive), is an associate professor at the University of Denver. He has previously taught at Case Western Reserve University, the University of Toledo and the University of Cincinnati. He also spent a semester teaching in Shanghai, China. He earned his BA in Accountancy at Park University, a Master of Accountancy at Wright State University and a PhD in Accountancy at the University of Cincinnati. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Prior to obtaining his PhD, he worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in their auditing and tax departments. Kimberly Jones is an associate professor of history in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Jones studies the experiences of enslaved and free black people across the Atlantic World. Her primary research is centered on the construction of racial identity through medicine and science. Mayowa Alabi is a graduate student in the Daniels College of Business.

What is Shame? What is health shame vs toxic shame? What if someone is unaware of their feelings, including shame? Can you heal from shame alone? These are the questions we will be asking Dr. Curt Thompson. Many of our neurodiverse relationships have shame- either about the diagnosis, about not having the perfect Christian marriage, or not meeting someone's needs- what do we do about that? How can clergy deal with their own shame of not knowing how to help neurodiverse couples?About our Guest:Psychiatrist, speaker, and author Curt Thompson connects our intrinsic desire to be known with the need to tell truer stories about ourselves — showing us how to form deep relationships, discover meaning, and live integrated, creative lives.--Curt Thompson, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, author, speaker, and co-host of The Being Known Podcast. In this episode, we're taking a closer look at ketosis and how the ketogenic diet has evolved beyond just a weight-loss tool. I'm joined by Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, who unpacks the science behind Ketone Metabolic Therapy (KMT) and its growing role in treating conditions like epilepsy, neurological issues, and metabolic disorders. His research sheds light on the therapeutic potential of ketones, which are not only vital for energy but also key players in reducing inflammation and enhancing brain health. We also clear up some common misconceptions about keto, like battling the keto flu, and talk about practical ways to adopt and optimize the diet for better overall health. Whether you're curious about using keto for disease management or just want to understand how it can support mental and physical wellness, this episode has something for you. It's all about understanding the science and making the keto lifestyle work for your body! Key Takeaways: The ketogenic diet historically originated as a treatment for epilepsy and has expanded to other therapeutic areas, such as metabolic syndrome and neurodegenerative diseases. Ketone bodies, especially beta-hydroxybutyrate, perform dual roles as potent energy sources and cell signaling molecules that offer anti-inflammatory benefits. Keto metabolic therapy (KMT) encompasses multiple approaches, including diet, fasting, and supplements, to maintain therapeutic ketosis. Adoption of a ketogenic lifestyle may require supplement support, particularly with electrolytes, to avoid side effects like keto flu. Variations in genetic and gender responses can influence the effectiveness and experience of ketosis, necessitating personalized dietary adjustments.   More of  Dr. Dominic D'Agostino: Dr. Dominic D'Agostino is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and serves as a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). He earned his B.S. in Nutritional Science and Biological Sciences from Rutgers University in 1998, followed by a Predoctoral Fellowship in Neuroscience and Physiology at Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in 1999. In 2004, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Ohio before joining USF in 2006. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. D'Agostino leads a lab focused on developing and testing nutritional strategies and metabolic-based therapies for neurological disorders, cancer, and metabolic optimization. His research includes both basic science studies and human clinical trials. He has a personal interest in environmental medicine and developing methods to enhance the safety and physiological resilience of military personnel and astronauts in extreme environments. Dr. D'Agostino's research in metabolic control and neuroscience is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations, and nonprofit foundations. He has published on East Indian Śākta traditions, early modern Hindu statecraft, Nath Yogi literature from Bengal, and Tibetan Buddhism in Anglophone popular culture. He is a Research Fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, The Netherlands,  and a member of the research group Body and Embodiment in the Middle Bengali Imaginary based at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. As Zeena Schreck, the famous daughter of Anton LaVey of the Church of Satan, was recently interviewed by Jordan Peterson, I immediately thought of Joel and a presentation he gave three years ago about Zeena and her then-husband Nikolas as they relate to Tibetan Buddhism, Tantra and Left-Hand Path practices. I asked Joel if he'd like to re-visit this topic and to flesh it out, further expanding on this, in light of the recent media attention that Zeena has had. He graciously agreed. In this discussion, Joel first gives a background of Anton LaVey & the environment of the Church of Satan wherein Zeena grew up, leading to Zeena taking the role of spokesperson for the Church during the Satanic Panic years, and then the circumstances that led to Zeena leaving the Church to forge her own path. This takes us to other projects that Zeena and Nikolas were involved in, such as Radio Werewolf and the Temple of Set, their break from that group to form their own group called the Sethian Liberation Movement or ‘The Storm'.  Joel discusses in more detail the concepts of tantra and left-hand path traditions that are used in their practices and beliefs. Another important factor that is discussed is the role of Traditionalism within all of Zeena's work.In closing we discuss our takeaways from Zeena's interview with Jordan Peterson. He therefore has a particular empathy for his subjects, many of whom like him hail from Somalia but also from a myriad global locations, from Nepal and Iraq to the Democratic Republic of Congo and more recently Ukraine. His passion is not only for his work's artistic expression, though, but also for its documentary value. Tariq wants to ensure that the refugees' faces and the histories they contain are photographed and then archived with the same care shown to their antecedents who in centuries past arrived largely from Europe through Ellis Island.   Tariq has also conducted photographic projects in refugee camps around the world and has directed documentary films, including "Women, War and Resettlement: Nasro's Journey" and "Silsilad," which have been featured on PBS, and most recently "The Darien Gap," which was showcased at the 2nd United States Conference on African Immigrant and Refugee Health. His photos have been exhibited in several institutions, including the Ross Museum and Wright State University, and several are now part of the permanent collections at the Columbus Museum of Art and the Ross Museum.  His deep knowledge of the refugee experience stems not only from his own personal excellence. For years now he has worked as the Director of Refugee Social Services at Jewish Family Services in Columbus, Ohio. YoutubeTikTokSpotifyFacebookTwitterIts seldom that a television show can have as profound an impact on society as Euphoria. Thepopular HBO series has had a stranglehold on this generation's pop culture by inspiring art, collaborations, and most importantly: music. Alli Fitz's newest track “When We're Together” wasinspired by the series and helps celebrate love and happiness. An accomplished social media star, Alli Fitz achieved viral success early by singing, streamingand doing voiceover work on various social media platforms. Alli has amassed a loyal followingof over 10 million fans across various social media platforms and has began shifting her focustowards music full time. Alli's newest track, “When We're Together,” is a celebration of hernewfound love after being single for an extended period of time.“I have been single for the longest time, and people know one of my relatable posts is aboutbeing single, and people can relate to that,” Alli said. “Recently, I got a boyfriend, which is reallyexciting. I finally decided to write a song about that. Most of my songs are girl-empowering, youdon't need a man and can do it on your own. Now I wanted to switch it up a bit because I got aman, and it is about the feelings I have when I'm with him when we're together.”She added, “I say that I promise that I'm worth the wait because I'm the girl that you need. It'sreally a song for someone who you love.”The process of making a music video was an enjoyable one for her, as Alli had a major say in its creation since she is still independent. A newfound creative control and independence has been spearheaded by her manager, Adrian “Auidi” Vazquez. Auidi is the COO/CFO of NOGXNRE, a decentralized record label based in Los Angeles, CA. Having been featured in publications like Billboard Latino, Auidi's experience in the Judaic industry has provedinvaluable to Alli Fitz's budding music career. She had the autonomy to choose the director andvideographer and was free to do her own makeup and styling.“I got to choose all this and even where the location was,” Alli Fitz said. “It was pretty cool being the boss and the person in front of the camera.” Alli explained that back in the days of MySpace, she would watch other YouTubers singing cover tunes, which inspired her to do the same and turn it into a real career. This newfoundcareer goal happened in 2008 while she lived in Ohio. Alli would post videos of herself in herbedroom singing covers and a spell of popular songs, which garnered her millions of views. Sheadmitted she was a little scared that she wouldn't get the positive feedback she wanted, but inthe end, her success took off quicker than she could have ever expected.“When people started sending me song requests, I was like, ‘Oh my God, they do actually likemy voice?'” Alli said. “I started doing musicals in high school, where we just had the town comein. Now it's like people from all over the world are like, ‘We love your music.' It's crazy. I have acover with Chad Perez that is going viral in China.” She attended Wright State University for musical theater, where she polished up her singing skills. After graduating, Fitz moved to Los Angeles after creating a Vine account that got her more than five million followers and a billion video views.“My dog ended up play-biting me, and everyone thought it was funny. I gained millions offollowers from Vine,” she said. “They invited me to the Macy's Parade, and I got tons ofexposure. That's what got me to LA because all the other Viners were like, ‘Hey Alli, you needto move out here.” Alli said it was such a wild and unexpected feeling to get that kind of acknowledgment. She simply posted an entertaining video, and suddenly people from all over the world were checkingout what she was up to. It was an incredible experience for her, and she has met and collaborated with some of her favorite artists along the way.Alli eventually moved on to TikTok, where she now has seven million followers. For the pastseveral years, she has been focused on releasing her music for the world.“I released my first single, “Fill the Void,” in 2017, and it was pretty cool,” Alli said. “But I've beentrying to get more music out and get my name bigger in the music industry instead of justthrough social media. I'm pretty well known there, but I want to be in the music world, too.”Alli wants her fans to know that her music is real and comes directly from her life and what shebelieves in. While her lyrics tend to come from her life experiences, Alli is inspired by listening toher favorite artists. She explained that before she goes on stage, she tends to get nervous, soshe'll watch those artists to see what they do beforehand. She also tries to look at the way they write their material. Alli pointed out that musicians likeAriana Grande write whatever they want these days, and this inspires her. “It's not about what sells,” Alli said. “She writes what she feels, and I love that. So I have starteddoing that too, and it has been so much fun since then.” Alli wants to get her music out to the masses to listen to. While she has been able to do this fairly easily through the internet, she also wants people to see what she's got in person. “I want to go on tour,” she said. “That's my number one thing. I want to be able to sing my songs and have people sing them back. I want choreographed dance numbers and costumes—all of that. I want it all. I want to be able to show my music to the world.” The “When We're Together” music video is available on March 11. Be sure to check this and the rest of Alli Fitz's material on all platforms. Lastly, Alli extends a very special thanks to everyone who participated in this project: JV, RandallDidIt, Chazz, Darius Dantzler, Adrian “Auidi” Vazquez, and the entire FilmHead Professionals crew. Answers to Your CGM Questions: For Nondiabetics  Got questions about CGM use? We've got answers to your CGM questions in this episode. My guest wrote the book and we have a tip-rich discussion about how you can benefit from CGMs and change your life. And if not you, potentially this will be of value for someone you influence.  My favorite CGM: https://www.flippingfifty.com/myglucose  My Guest: Paul Kolodzik, MD is board-certified by both the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Emergency Physicians. In a thirty-year emergency room career, he has cared for many patients in crises and has witnessed firsthand the failures of mainstream diets and the medical system overall, which prioritizes medications and surgery over diet and lifestyle changes to prevent and reverse disease. In his metabolic health practice Dr. Kolodzik uses the technology of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), previously used only by diabetics, to help his patients achieve weight loss and improved health.  In his recently published book, The Continuous Glucose Monitoring Revolution, Dr. Kolodzik shares how he has helped thousands of patients lose weight, and prevent and reverse metabolic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, prediabetes, GERD, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease and others using CGM. In this book, he presents a comprehensive program for metabolic health success using CGMs. Dr. Kolodzik graduated from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school and residency at Wright State University where he served as chief resident. Paul Kolodzik, MD is board-certified by both the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Emergency Physicians. Kolodzik shares how he has helped thousands of patients lose weight, and prevent and reverse metabolic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, prediabetes, GERD, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and others using CGM. In this book, he presents a comprehensive program for metabolic health success using CGMs. Dr. Kolodzik graduated from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school and residency at Wright State University where he served as chief resident. He is a founding member of the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners. WWE SmackDown 8/4/23 full show review, and results with JDfromNY on Off The Script. JDfromNY reviews WWE Friday Night SmackDown for Friday August 4th 2023. The SmackDown SummerSlam go-home show takes place this evening at the Wright State University's Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Jey Uso is set to appear on tonight's show ahead of his Tribal Combat showdown with Roman Reigns tomorrow night. Jey Uso thought he got the better of Reigns and Solo Sikoa on last week's show, but the duo ended up standing tall in the middle of the ring after delivering two vicious Samoan Spike/Spear combos.Meanwhile, reigning WWE Women's Champion Asuka, Charlotte Flair, and Bianca Belair are scheduled to be in attendance before they face each other in a triple threat match for the women's belt at the SummerSlam premium live event. The trio have been feuding in recent weeks and will presumably get one last chance to address each other on the microphone before stepping into the ring tomorrow night at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. And lastly, LA Knight and Sheamus, who will enter the SummerSlam Battle Royal on Saturday night, are set to collide in one-on-one action. On-screen authority figure Adam Pearce made the match last week after Knight and Sheamus got into a backstage argument.
