But in the Christian counter-culture our top priority concern is not our name kingdom and will, but God's. "The name of God is not a combination of the letters G, O and D. The name stands for the person who bears it, for his character and activity. So God's 'name' is God himself as he is in himself and has revealed himself. His name is already 'holy' in that it is separate from and exalted over every other name, but we pray that it may be hallowed, 'treated as holy,' because we ardently desire that due honour may be given to it, that is to him whose name it is, in our own lives, in the church and in the world."--John R.W. Elton John and Brandi Carlile released John's swan song recently, "Who Believes in Angels." It brings up the opposite world view of universalism. Against this backdrop we look at the hopeless position of NO ETERNITY, sometimes called annihilationism - nothing beyond the grave - that the human soul is not eternal but suffers destruction at death. In the last century, there was a conservatism theologian named John R.W. Stott. He shocked the conservative theological realm by changing his theology about death and the afterlife and came to believe in the annihilation of the soul for those who die without knowing Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, His parents died without ever turning to Jesus, He could not bear the thought of his parents burning in a real Hell forever. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“When the Father's Wisdom wanted to communicate His loveHe spoke it in one final perfect Word. “And so the Light became alive, and manna became ManEternity stepped into time, so we could understand.”~Michael Card, musical artist “‘Evangelion' (that we call the gospel) is a Greek word, and signifies good, merry, glad and joyful tidings, that makes a man's heart glad, and makes him sing, dance and leap for joy.”~William Tyndale (1494-1536), English, scholar, reformer, and Bible translator “Many people visualize a God who sits comfortably on a distant throne, remote, aloof, uninterested, and indifferent to the needs of mortals, until, it may be, they can badger him into taking action on their behalf. Such a view is wholly false. The Bible reveals a God who, long before it even occurs to man to turn to him, while man is still lost in darkness and sunk in sin, takes the initiative, rises from his throne, lays aside his glory, and stoops to seek until he finds him.”~John R.W. Stott (1921-2011), Anglican priest and theologian “The Son of God did not want to be seen and found in heaven. Therefore he descended from heaven into this humility and came to us in our flesh, laid himself into the womb of his mother and into the manger and went on to the cross. This was the ladder that he placed on earth so that we might ascend to God on it. This is the way you must take.”~Martin Luther (1483-1546), German reformer “For whatever reason God chose to make man as he is— limited and suffering and subject to sorrows and death—He had the honesty and the courage to take His own medicine.… He has kept His own rules and played fair. He can exact nothing from man that He has not exacted from Himself. He has Himself gone through the whole of human experience, from the trivial irritations of family life and the cramping restrictions of hard work and lack of money to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair and death. When He was a man, He played the man. He was born in poverty and died in disgrace and thought it well worthwhile.”~Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957), novelist and playwrightSERMON PASSAGELuke 2:10-11, Proverbs 12:25, Proverbs 25:25 (ESV) Luke 2 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.Proverbs 1225 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,   but a good word makes him glad.Proverbs 25                         25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul,   so is good news from a far country.

I thought John & I were going to talk mostly about burnout. How it “happened” to him, how he got through it, and perhaps, what he's doing differently now. But (perhaps rather obviously) it can't really be broken down that simply. Instead, John and I wound up not only talking about burnout, but also the pursuit of the impossible perfect cylinder, the responsibility we all have to educate others on what we do while also hopefully exciting them, and particularly the realities of the economics of making - whether that be other jobs that help support that reality, but also the internal realities of pricing and finding your market, or rather, finding someone else who has already found your market for you.If trying to explain your work to others has been feeling hard, if you are tired of explaining why your price is what it is, or if you find yourself in the wrong spaces or shows for the work you are trying to make, then you don't want to miss out on our next Masterclass inside of The Community. On July 17th, we'll be learning from Naomi Clement all about Communicating Your Value. As Naomi says, “While the nuts and bolts numbers side of things are sure important, this session will focus more on the marketing side of conveying value and selling your work. Because… Selling is really just storytelling after all.” All of our Quarterly Masterclasses are recorded and included with the cost of Community membership, so you can also binge through the library of ever growing resources to help take the next step in making a living from the things you make. Bible Study Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: Acts 1:15–26; John 17:11–19 "Today, if ye hear His voice" Human wisdom Judas Leaving the hill, attaining the city How was it decided that Judas should be replaced? Why were those disciples who were later martyred (like James: Acts 12:2) not replaced? What are the qualifications for apostleship that Peter underscores? What does this suggest about the priorities of the early church? Why is it inappropriate for Christians to draw lots today? In this context, how are the lots symbolic (see Numbers 25:55–56, 33:54, 34:13, 36:2–3, etc.)? How are they provisional (compare John 16:13; Acts 2, 13:2–3)? Why is it significant that Judas "acquired a field" (Acts 1:18)? What does that tell us about Judas? The disciples call Jesus "Lord, knower of hearts" (kyrie kardiagnōsta). How does it sit with you that Jesus Christ knows your heart? How is the Holy Spirit challenging or warning you today? What promises of God has this scripture driven home to you? Would your life look different if human wisdom was all you had? Would anything be missing? What? John R.W. Stott, The Message of Acts (IVP) Craig S.
