This week's focus is on the legendary pitching icon Ferguson Jenkins, who is arguably the greatest ballplayer that Canada has ever produced (with all apologies to Larry Walker) and indeed one of the country's finest all-around athletes ever. During a time that many consider "The Golden Age Of Pitching", Fergie stood shoulder to shouler with the era's greats, and he towered above the rest. He is the only (and most likely the last, considering the evolution of the bullpen in the modern game) pitcher in the last 50 years to win at least 20 games a year, for six consecutive seasons, and along with Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling, they are the only four pitchers in the game's long history with 3,000 strikeouts to their credit, and less than 1,000 walks surrendered. They also do plenty of setting up to identify players worthy of their own episodes in the future, and find a couple of Almost Every Rockie Evers in the deck of cards! But the Toddfather, who could be Cooperstown bound in January, won a pair of Player of the Year Awards in 2000. The game features one thumbing - the umps toss the Expos mascot Youppi! in the 11th for annoying Tommy Lasorda - and he then returns in the 13th wearing pajamas. He carries a pillow and sleeps on the home dugout roof, where the umps have restricted him. In the 16th, Larry Walker apparently scores the game-winner, but the Dodgers appeal - with two umps in the tunnel - and get the play revesed. Eddie Murray in the 18th moves the second base ump and slams a drive that Walker traps off the padding in RF. Fans stand for three "seventh-inning stretches" during the major-league record (in time, and for a 1 - 0 game) 6 hours, 14 minute game. Other club records are set and several major league records are noted: most innings (22) without a walk by the Expos tops the Pirates (who used one pitcher) against the Giants, July 17, 1914.

July 13, 1934 - Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run in a 4-2 victory over Tommy Bridges and the Detroit Tigers. Lou Gehrig left the game in the first with a severe case of lumbago, the most serious threat to his streak. He returned for one at-bat the next day and went on to win the triple crown that season.1943 - The first night game in All-Star history, at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, went to the American League, 5-3, despite a single, triple and home run by National League center fielder Vince DiMaggio of the Pirates. The big blow was a three-run homer by Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox, which gave the AL the lead for good. 1963 - Early Wynn registered his 300th and final victory, at age 43, pitching the first five innings of Cleveland's 7-4 win over the Kansas City A's. Wynn was a hard throwing, hard nosed pitcher. Vida Blue once said of him as a coach "If you hit a ball good off of him, he'd knock you down".1971 - The American League defeated the National League 6-4 in the All-Star Game played at Tigers stadium which saw three home runs hit by each team. The most notable was Reggie Jackson's mammoth shot off the power generator on the right-field roof. It has been estimated that Jackson's bomb would have traveled 532 feet if not for striking the generator...surely one of the greatest displays of power in the history of the game.1982 - The National League registered its eleventh consecutive All-Star victory over the American League with a 4-1 victory at Montreal's Olympic Stadium in the first game played outside the United States. Dave Concepcion's two-run homer off Dennis Eckersley in the second inning was the deciding hit. Ted Williams would return to the All Star game in Fenway Park in on July 13, 1999, to throw out the first pitch. The best players of the day flocked to the mound to talk hitting with Willliams as fans roared and Williams waved his cap to them...a gesture he never made as a player. Another type of greatness would be on display that night, as the Red Sox own, Pedro Martinez becomes the first pitcher to strike out the first 4 batters of All Star game and win as the starting pitcher on his own homefield. Barry Larkin, Larry Walker and Sammy Sosa in the first inning, and Mark McGwire in the second would all fall to Martinez as he got the W in the American League 4-1 victory over the National League.Historical Recap performed by:Robyn Newton from - Robyn SaysTrivia is provided by -Horseshide TriviaTrivia is provided by -Horseshide TriviaThis Day In Baseball is Sponsored by - www.vintagebaseballreflections.com - Join the membership today and listen to 50 years of baseball history told to you by the folks who were there! MLB.com writer Manny Randhawa recently visited the Jack Vita Show to discuss a plethora of topics, including the Colorado Rockies' lingering struggles, Kris Bryant's performance in the second year of his seven-year contract with the team, and the surging Arizona Diamondbacks, who now have a 3.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.   Among topics discussed was Manny's incredible faith story. Manny grew up with an abusive father that is a malignant narcissist. From a young age, he was taught by his father that there is no God. Manny grew up an atheist, despite attending church and a Christian school. His parents placed him in a Christian school, believing that it would keep him from being involved with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble.   Manny says that he has had two heart surgeries: the first, a physical one when he was a young child. The second was a spiritual one, where God replaced Manny's heart of stone and gave him a heart of flesh.   In this episode of the Jack Vita Show, we focus solely on Manny's incredible testimony and faith story. How does one go from being an atheist to a born-again Christian? Logically, how does one go from believing there is no God to not only believing in God, but dedicating his life to serving Jesus Christ? Manny shares his amazing story with Jack, as they discuss faith, apologetics, what attracts people to atheism, and much more along the way. It's an episode you won't want to miss!   Follow Manny on Twitter (@MannyOnMLB) and buy his book, The Blake Street Bombers, on Amazon. MLB.com reporter Manny Randhawa visits the Jack Vita Show for a lively discussion about the Colorado Rockies, the latest news from around Major League Baseball, and his Christian faith.   Manny has written for MLB.com as a national baseball writer and Colorado Rockies beat reporter since 2016. In his first visit to the Jack Vita Show, he weighs in on the Rockies' 2023 season and general direction. What exactly is the Rockies' plan, and where are they going? Why have they found themselves in last place in the National League West, just a few years removed from possessing a strong infield nucleus of Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieu and Trevor Story?   Just over a year ago, the Rockies signed former National League MVP and four-time All-Star Kris Bryant to a seven-year, $182 million contract. Through his first 50 games in his second season with his new team, Bryant is slashing .263/.346/.719 with five home runs and 17 RBI. It's early, but Bryant hasn't played up to what many expected him to, especially with Coors Field as his home park. Manny weighs in on the Bryant signing, his contract and early struggles. Plus, shortstop Dansby Swanson signed virtually the same seven-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, that Bryant signed with the Rockies. If you were the Cubs, which contract would you rather have? Jack poses this question.   Manny and Jack take a close look at the National League West, which the Arizona Diamondbacks now lead, as they are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Can the D-Backs win the division? Back in 2018, the Diamondbacks and Rockies were both competing for an NL West division title in the final month of the season. Five years later, one team finds itself in first place, while the other is in last place. Manny and Jack break down the division and discuss the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres as well (0:00 - 1:03:00).   Later on, Manny opens up about his faith journey, in which he transformed from an atheist to a born again Christian. What led Manny on his path to Jesus Christ, and how has his life changed in the time since he first became a Christian? He also discusses growing up with an abusive father, undergoing heart surgery, and much more (1:03:00 - END)!   Follow Manny on Twitter (@MannyOnMLB) and buy his book, The Blake Street Bombers, on Amazon.
