In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss how just a few weeks ago YouTube celebrated its 20th anniversary. Few could have imagined that a 19-second video of a man looking at elephants at the San Diego Zoo could have led to the creation of a global media powerhouse. With 20 billion videos having been uploaded to date, we thought it was fitting to discuss the countless ways that YouTube has revolutionized media and our culture. Episode Links In today's episode, Dr. White shared a ton of facts and figures on YouTube related to its history, its growth and where it's headed in the future. Here are a collection of articles and blogs that we'd encourage you to take a look at if you're interested in learning more or finding any stats that were shared today: Wendy Lee, “YouTube turns 20 years old. How it changed TV as we know it,” Los Angeles Times. Todd Spangler, “YouTube Says It Now Hosts More Than 20 Billion Videos, Unveils New Features and Easter Eggs in 20th Birthday Celebration,” Variety. Dade Hayes, “YouTube's Revenue Will Top Disney's This Year As It Becomes “The Home For All Things Video”, Analyst Says,” Deadline. James Hardy, “Who Invented YouTube: The Visionaries Behind the Digital Revolution,” History Cooperative. Viraj Mahesh, “20 ways we're celebrating two decades of YouTube,” YouTube Official Blog. “YouTube” 1440. If you're interested in checking out YouTube's first video ever posted, you can click HERE to watch “Me at the Zoo.” And you can click HERE to check out the most-viewed videos of all time on YouTube. And then Dr. White mentioned a recent news article discussing just how much people increasingly trust their peers and the type of content that they release on social media today. You can read “Gen Z increasingly listens to peers over doctors for health advice” found in Axios HERE. Finally, Dr. White turned the conversation to the takeaways for the church, and how we need to meet people where they are at in order to share the message of Jesus with them. He wrote about this in depth in his book, Hybrid Church, which you can order from Amazon HERE. The primary way to meet people where they are in today's culture is through YouTube. Big news alert! Eric G is diving into the juicy details of a massive merger in the construction industry, where James Hardy is making waves by teaming up with AZEK for a whopping $8.75 billion! We're talking about the kind of cash that could build a small village—or at least a really fancy treehouse. But wait, there's more! Eric's also sharing some personal updates, like his plans to sell his home and the wild ride that comes with preparing for a move. And if that's not chaotic enough, he's poking fun at the major headaches that pop up in Facebook groups about home construction—seriously, it's a treasure trove of DIY disasters. So grab your favorite drink and buckle up, because this Weekday Update is packed with insights, hilarity, and maybe a few “what were they thinking?” moments!Merger mania is sweeping through the construction industry, and Eric G is here to spill the tea on the latest jaw-dropping acquisitions! Picture this: James Hardy, the big player in siding from Down Under, just threw a whopping $8.75 billion at AZEK, the composite decking wonder, in a cash and stock deal. I mean, can we talk about the size of that check? Talk about making waves in the housing market! With mortgage rates climbing and sales of previously occupied homes plunging to a near three-decade low, it's clear that the construction landscape is shifting faster than a jackhammer on the job site. Eric dives deep into the implications of these mergers, like how James Hardy will control a staggering 74% of the new company, leaving AZEK stockholders with a mere 26%. But the real kicker? James Hardy's resilience through its asbestos scandal is a testament to the brand's grit. As Eric navigates through these corporate maneuvers, he also drops a personal bombshell: he's preparing to put his house on the market! A big change is coming, but will he sell to a developer or find a new pad to call home? The stakes are high, and Eric's got a lot on his plate as he gears up for round two of home improvement adventures. Buckle up, because this episode is packed with insights, business smarts, and personal anecdotes that are as relatable as they are enlightening. On the home front, Eric reveals that while he's tackling major changes in his personal life, he's also keeping a close eye on the social media world—especially those Facebook groups that focus on home construction. And boy, does he have some stories to tell! With a plethora of DIY groups at his fingertips, he's noticed a pattern: the same construction pitfalls keep popping up. From cabinet disasters to questionable craftsmanship, it's like watching a bad reality show unfold. He shares his experience from the group “Ask a Cabinet Maker”, where the majority of cabinetry issues stem from small custom shops that, let's just say, may not be putting their best foot forward. With horror stories of ugly finishes and poor designs, Eric emphasizes the importance of doing your homework before investing in custom cabinetry. Should you trust the local kitchen and bath design center? Spoiler alert: yes! It's all about finding quality over quantity, and Eric offers sage advice on what finishes and practices to look out for. So before you dive headfirst into your next renovation project, make sure to tune in for some golden nuggets of wisdom that could save you from a DIY disaster! As the episode winds down, Eric leaves us with a tantalizing teaser about what's coming next in the world of home improvement. With an exciting array of topics on the horizon—including smart home tech and lighting innovations—he's ready to roll up his sleeves and get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a home smart and stylish. Not to mention, there's a birthday celebration in the air for the show itself, marking 37 years of bringing you the best in home improvement tips and tricks. So whether you're a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the world of home projects, this Weekday Update is your go-to guide for...

Let's start this Carfagno Cleaning solo business with a WIN! Last week, I got 5 referrals through my local network (listen to Play Powerball with your Business). The lead from my friend and carpet cleaner, James Hardy, converted to a new office cleaning client! Since this new client is a school, I had to jump through a few more hoops. First of all, I needed to go beyond adding them as a 'Certificate Holder' on my general liability policy. I needed to increase my insurance for this additional customer. This is called 'Additionally Insured'. My current policy provides $2 million of coverage per year at $500 in annual premium. This new client cost me an additional $50, which I count as an expense. I also had to coordinate a cleaning time with the school and their weekend janitor to let me into the building. The school is not in the habit of handing out keys to outside contractors. Spoiler alert: I prayed over this situation as I desire to have offices with the flexibility to clean anytime over the weekend. A few days later, the school made an exception for me and gave me a set of keys! Lastly, this new client is a school for autistic children. I know autism and realize that these students will be on the floor a lot, touching things, and likely touching their faces. Thus, disinfecting of the classrooms and floors was vital. They already had a food & skin safe disinfectant and asked me my opinion for the floors. I researched it and immediately determined it was a bad choice. Why? The title of this episode is "Art Trumps Science". Let's talk science first. The pH was slightly alkaline at 9. The floors are VCT (vinyl composition tile). VCT is commonly used in schools and supermarkets. They are also waxed & buffed on a regular basis to keep a beautiful finish and to protect the tile. My friend James Hardy did the job, so we conferred with him and he agreed. This ph 9 disinfectant had just enough alkalinity to eat away at the wax finish, which would dull it and cause James to come back sooner. Therefore, their disinfectant was a wonderful choice for the refrigerators, microwaves, table tops, door knobs, and light switches, but NOT the floors. I connected with my good friend Mark Lineberry at Universal Janitorial and he recommended the perfect solution. It's called MatPro. The school purchased it and now uses my recommendations for disinfecting and protecting their students and staff. This raised my expertise and trust with the school big time. See! Understanding science is vital. It sets you apart from the basic cleaning service! Another lead from last week was Mike Thompson of Envoy Mortgage from my MCBA group. Mike is a mortgage advisor. What is that? It means he focuses on what's best for his clients. He coaches and consults them, looking at their lending scenario from a holistic approach. Of course he sells mortgage products too. He's a Go-Giver and his clients ask him to sell to them as a result of his giving approach. Anyway, Mike got back to my estimate and accepted a biweekly option. There's new client #2 for the week!Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Today, Hunter is by two Colorado State Public Defenders, James Hardy and Kayleigh TenBarge. When this episode was first recorded, James, Kayleigh, and Hunter were primarily focused on a piece of legislation that the Defenders Union of Colorado attempted and failed to get through the state house. That bill sought to get workload standards in place in Colorado by mid-2025. After recording that segment, an audit of the Colorado State Public Defender dropped, and revealed that at least 46% and maybe as many as 99% of Public Defenders in Colorado are exceeding workloads. Considering that, OSPD has stated they will get a workload standard by mid-2026. But why the wait? What will happen in the interim? What relief will come to an increasingly overloaded system? Police Union Willing to TalkAt an Akron City Council meeting, Brian Lucey, representing Akron's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, stated the union's willingness to engage in discussions on police reform, offering to meet with anyone at any time for this purpose. Lucey's remarks were prompted by Councilman James Hardy's suggestion to pause discussions on a new police headquarters until reform is achieved. Councilwoman Jan Davis echoed the need for dialogue on policing in Akron.Hardy expressed support for Davis' call for reform-oriented conversations, indicating his intention to vote against funding for a new police department until meaningful reform discussions take place. He emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders in these talks and advocated for a new standard for police-community relations.Lucey accused Hardy of supporting police defunding, which Hardy refuted, citing his past support for police funding increases. Hardy emphasized the necessity of rethinking the current approach to policing and promoting constructive dialogue rather than divisive rhetoric. Both Hardy and Davis emphasized the importance of involving Akron's underserved communities in reform discussions and expressed readiness to collaborate with the union and other stakeholders to initiate proactive conversations aimed at positive change.Parasson's Closing All But One LocationParasson's is closing all of their locations except for the on on Waterloo road. My Total Life Freedom local friends and local networking friend Eric Laylon intersect for a second episode. In "Don't Fight Google or Facebook, Fight for Lunch", my friend Eric Laylon from ReachLocal shared great marketing tips and stats on the digital giants. I followed this with a story of who paid for lunch. In this episode, I am copying the format! Last week in my local MCBA meeting, Eric ran the business education segment and taught on the benefits of using Alignable for marketing. I've personally avoided it, but Eric gives some great points and tips that may have persuaded me to look into it more. Thus, I wanted to share it with you. LinkedIn is a business platform for business owners and professionals (employees). Alignable is for small business owners locally (not nationally like LinkedIn). The platform is already niched to local and small business owners, which makes it a natural marketing companion to in-person local networking. Alignable has niche groups that you can join of "like interest". Eric says he has gotten so much more business through Alignable vs LinkedIn because of the platform's ability to hyper-niche. Eric explained that you can set up your profile with "who you'd like to connect with". Then, Alignable takes your preferences and puts you in front of those people. Eric uses the premium $30/mo version because the free version limits you to the # of people you can connect with. I thought Eric did a great job presenting Alignable and it really intrigued me. What do you think? Do you use this platform? I'd love to hear about it if you do.A few leads came in this week. The first one was military-like. My friend James Hardy of the Carpet Guys was in an online group and saw a request for a house cleaner. He was in the process of typing in my name and website when something else caught his attention. The owner of a local cafe gave my name first. He recommended me and then texted me. "Ken, do you clean for the cafe?" I said no, but I do clean the owner's home. Then he told me about the recommendation to Steven Hunsberger. I thanked him and shared that Steven is the president of my chamber and we're friends. Then I contacted Steven and he felt so embarrassed that his friend Ken and the only cleaner of 400 members in his chamber didn't come to mind when he was looking for a house cleaner. There are multiple takeaways here. First, I am so thankful that I was triangulated by multiple friends to recommend me and they all knew each other! Another is that I have done a poor job in communicating that I clean houses to Steven in all of our interactions including our recent breakfast! Steven knew that I cleaned offices, but had no idea that I did houses too. We talked on the phone and I answered all of his questions in hopes of educating him on the various options he had for hiring a house cleaning service.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

In this episode, I speak with three inspiring individuals: Michelle Sages, a Lead Deputy State Public Defender of the Denver Trial Office, Travis Weiner, a Deputy State Public Defender of the Greely Regional Office, and James Hardy, a Lead Deputy Public Defender in the Appellate Division of the Colorado State Public Defender. Together, they speak on The Defender's Union of Colorado and why it's essential to have a public service union. Then, they go into how they have been working with both state officials and the general public to gain support for their cause. They'll wipe away all misconceptions about public service unions and prove that despite the criticisms, a union is beneficial for everyone involved. Even though Colorado is in the top 5 states with the strongest public defense system, there is still a long way to go. Public service employees are still drastically underpaid and overworked, while clients are not receiving fair access to representation. Michelle, Travis, and James are actively advocating for a system that ensures public service employees can keep up with the requirements of their job while clients can get the help they desperately need. With their passion for transforming the system, Colorado public defense has a much brighter future. Key Topics and Takeaways: Michelle, Travis, and James explain how they got into public defense. [7:06] Why the defense union was created. [12:36] Reasons public service and a union are not in conflict. [28:45] Biggest goals of the union. [36:38] Problems with the leadership in public defense. [37:34] The legal & structural issues that the union faces. [56:06] How the union avoids becoming public defender centered. [1:10:57] Policy work that needs to be done. [1:17:11] The future of Colorado public defense. [1:27:32] Why the union is necessary. [1:33:43] Guests: Michelle Sages, Lead Deputy State Public Defender, Denver Trial Office Travis Weiner, Deputy State Public Defender, Greely Regional Office James Hardy, Lead Deputy Public Defender, Appellate Division, Colorado State Public Defender Resources: Defender Union of Colorado Polis, Democratic lawmakers and local governments are all squaring off over public bargaining rights Colorado's Public Defender's Office workers announce a union effort, but state laws stand in their way Colorado's public defenders launch union drive for lawyers and support staff. But there's a catch. "Highly Overworked and Grossly Underpaid": Why Public Defenders Launched a Union Memorable Quotes: “If we can't do this work without all of us, we need to improve the conditions for all of us.” (13:16, Travis) “I think a lot of people leave because they believe that the work is so important and they find themselves unable to do it in a satisfactory way within the system.” (18:31, Michelle) “Our goal as a union is to provide the best client representation we possibly can and to ensure effective representation for all of our clients and where we feel like that our system is falling short is in retention and creating a sustainable career path for folks, which long term hurts our clients' representation.” (29:30, James) “One of the problems with the revolving door system is oftentimes for supervisor positions, it's not who's the most qualified or the best fit, it's who's up next, Is that the best way to train the next generation of public defenders? Is that the best way to select someone that brand new public defenders are gonna look to and model after? I don't think so.” (37:52, James) “Everybody knows it is a totally open secret that it is a completely unconstitutional, dysfunctional system and people are not getting the representation that they deserve and need.” (43:57, Travis) “The system does not work if every gear in it is not functioning properly.” (1:06:26, Travis) “Having a system that's not functioning well does not benefit victims of these crimes either.” (1:08:17, Michelle) Contact Hunter Parnell: hwparnell@publicdefenseless.com Instagram www.publicdefenseless.com

In this episode, Kris and Paul discuss a paper that explores how our attention - and where we focus it - can impact our performance: Links between Attention, Performance Pressure, and Movement in Skilled Motor Action Authored by Rob Gray; published in Current Directions in Psychological Science in June, 2011. They'll discuss the difference between focusing attention internally or externally, and how each has been shown to affect athletic performance, especially when the pressure is on. They'll break down four ways that attention focus has been shown to impact movement, and what this information could mean for climbers. *Additional studies/resources mentioned in this episode: Performance of gymnastics skill benefits from an external focus of attention Authored by Reza Abdollahipour, Gabriele Wulf, Rudolf Psotta, and Miriam Palomo Nieto; published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, 2015. When I started this podcast, I predicted certain themes would come up often like pricing, people skills, leadership, business owner mindset, and cleaning efficiency. But I never saw the theme of overcoming fear emerging so often. In "Yeah, That's Fear", we explored the 3 Failure Diseases of Excusitis, Detailitis, and Procrastination. Go back and listen to that episode to refresh. Fear disguises itself in so many ways. Fear causes us to stop taking action or never start. I want to share a story in this episode from my friend James Hardy of the Carpet Guys. He is such an expert in floor cleaning and carpet & upholstery restoration that it's preventing him from scaling his business to the next level. This was me for years as a solo cleaner. First I'll share the story and then we'll unpack it. This will become part 4 of the Perfection Series, which includes "Excellence Vs. Perfection", "Accept the Uncertainty", and "Perfection is the Enemy". Each episode has covered different angles of how perfection crushes our productivity and growth. I encourage you to go back and re-listen to the previous 3 episodes as you have the opportunity. Here's my James Hardy story! Jim apprenticed as a carpet cleaner at 17-years-old and moved into his own business soon after. We are the same age, so that's over 25 years in the trade. Malcolm Gladwell penned mastery of a skill after 10,000 hours of hands-on training in his book "Outliers". By that measure, Jim is far beyond at 50,000 hours of carpet, upholstery, and floor cleaning. Jim knows the science of floor cleaning better than anyone I know. He has a reputation in our area as the Cadillac of carpet, upholstery, and floor cleaning services. In fact, Jim does restoration cleaning which "restores" the carpet to its original condition. I've seen him work and he's truly an artist. A couple weeks ago, Jim asked me to breakfast at Sammy's Bullfrog Cafe. Backstory... In early 2020, I released "Apologize with Action". I was submitting a cleaning proposal to Sammy's at this time and also made an introduction to James Hardy. Sammy never hired our cleaning service, but he did hire Jim for carpet cleaning of the cafe every 6 months. I said yes to breakfast and asked him why the sudden invite. "I was out at Sammy's on Monday night and I just wanted to see how the carpets turned out. Would you come with me?"I had to make a pit stop at the vacuum cleaner store and met Jim after. He was already surveying the carpets and shared this. "I moved all the tables off the carpet and cleaned it once like normal. But it was really dirty and I wasn't satisfied. So I ran the machine a second time. It looked good, but I know that the final presentation of the cleaned carpet doesn't set for 24 hours. I usually get out to as many jobs as possible the next day to do an inspection. I didn't really feel that good about this job Monday night going home and wanted to see it this morning. I felt weird coming here alone. Thanks for coming."Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website
