Ave atque Vale: Catullus' Goodbye to his Brother, Poem 101 (Ad Navseam, Episode 180)

Neoteric poetry is on the menus this week, as the guys take a close look at what Dave considers the most beautiful and moving poem from antiquity: Catullus 101. This is the famous threnody that Gaius Valerius Catullus (87-55 B.C.) addressed to his brother's ashes in Bithynia around 57 BC. The haunting lines of elegiac couplet compress a world of sorrow and sadness into 10 short verses. Along the way, Jeff explains how Catullus might have been a beat poet, and there's much discussion of what was driving the art and culture of the time. The one gentleman of Verona, the place that was a kind of Roman Hocking Hills, made his way to the capital city at the age of 22 and quickly put his name in lights with his brilliant and racy poetry addressed to cow-eyed Lesbia. Listeners will want to tune in for the new music, a brand-new sponsor (dellachelpka.art), and the usual, though moderated - given the weighty subject matter - hijinks. Check out A.S. Kline's translation of the poem here: https://www.poetryintranslation.com/PITBR/Latin/Catullus.php#anchor_Toc531846828

An interesting new study from the Geisinger health system in Pennsylvania examining if genomic screening in a large population increases the identification of disease risk prompted Raise the Line to re-release a previous episode about a textbook designed to help all medical providers understand the clinical applications of genomic testing. Genomics in the Clinic: A Practical Guide to Genetic Testing, Evaluation, and Counseling from Elsevier Science Direct dives into the use of this important tool in diagnosis and screening, indicating how individuals may respond to drug therapies, and more. “We really need to educate all healthcare providers about the practice of genetics because they're going to be involved directly or indirectly in genetic testing and conveying information about what the results mean to patients and their families,” explains co-author Dr. Ethylin Wang Jabs, enterprise chair of the Department of Clinical Genomics for Mayo Clinic. Jabs and her co-author, Dr. Antonie Kline, director of Clinical Genetics at the Harvey Institute for Human Genetics at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, chose a format that makes heavy use of case studies to help readers get a better grasp on this complicated field and they also include chapters on direct-to-consumer testing and the ethical and social implications in genomic medicine. “Any kind of potentially predictive testing can have ethical issues related to it, including insurance coverage, testing for family members, protections for minors, and more,” says Dr. Kline. Join host Caleb Furnas for an illuminating episode on an area of discussion in medicine that's growing in importance as the use of genetic testing rapidly increases. Mentioned in this episode: Genomics in the Clinic: A Practical Guide If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. For years, investigators focused on finding the person responsible for the brutal 2017 murders of Abby Williams and Liberty German. But one fact has always stood out—Liberty was actively talking to a fake online account, “anthony_shots”, in the hours before she disappeared. And that account? It was operated by Kegan Kline, a convicted child predator. Despite the clear digital evidence linking Kline to Liberty, law enforcement waited three years before even questioning him about the murders. When they finally did, Kline lied, deflected, and gave excuse after excuse—yet no charges were ever brought against him. Instead, in 2022, police suddenly searched the Wabash River near Kline's home, only to go silent about what they found. A month later, they arrested Richard Allen, a man with no known digital connection to Liberty or Abby. So why did law enforcement ignore Kline? Why wasn't he the focus from the very start? And did they rush to convict the wrong man? In this episode, we break down the police failures, the missing evidence, and the disturbing unanswered questions that still surround Kegan Kline and the Delphi Murders. Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are graced by the enthusiastic presence of Tony-nominated actor Rob McClure to finish off their episode cycle on Oscar-Winning Supporting Performances with a "Close-Up" about three classic comedic roles, which each garnered their performers the coveted trophies. The first of these would be Kevin Kline's role in "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988), the British-American, Monty Python-adjacent caper where Kline plays the audaciously stubborn diamond thief Otto West. Next is that of Jack Palance in "City Slickers" (1991), the story of three New Yorkers on a cattle-herding vacation in the American West, in which Palance plays their rugged-yet-warm-hearted trail boss, Curly. And rounding out this trio is Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny," the courtroom dramedy where the titular Brooklyn lawyer is enlisted to represent his wrongfully-accused cousin and best friend in Alabama, depending on crucial contributions from his brash and mechanically-astute fiancée Mona Lisa Vito to work towards their exoneration. Though all of these films were released in nearby years, the group discusses why these performances stand the test of time, be it due to laugh-out-loud physical gags, the contrast between locals and fish-out-of-water, or the resonant truths at each role's foundation. Aided by Rob McClure's inimitable experience and expert insight about the "actually, actually" that defines a great comic performance, they trace the vast range of humor among these characters and the greater stories in which they appear, making notable stops along the way at unforgettable facial expressions, one-armed push-ups, and scathing instruction-manual retorts. Rob McClure has earned Tony nominations for his roles in the Broadway productions of Mrs. Doubtfire and Chaplin, and has also appeared in Something Rotten!, Mary Poppins, Hello Dolly, Beetlejuice, and many more productions On- and Off-Broadway. Today we're back in conversation with Dr. Adam Cohen, social psychologist and psychologist of religion at Arizona State University, who shares another research project that explores the way religious ritual connects participants more deeply not only with faith, but with community — this time, not through the practice of abstaining from food, but from breaking bread together.  Dr. Arielle Levites, Managing Director of the Collaborative for Applied Studies in Jewish Education and a Research Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University had the same idea — that observing Shabbat wasn't just a nice idea, it was a practice with measurable impact. So the team designed a study, enlisting the participation of Aliza Kline, founding President and then-CEO of OneTable, an organization designed to help young Jews develop independence and confidence in observing the ritual of Shabbat dinner in their homes. The question they wanted to answer? Does Shabbat dinner as a spiritual practice increase social connectedness? Read the transcript of this episode

Special Judge Fran Gull has rejected efforts by Richard Allen's attorneys to overturn his murder conviction in the Delphi murders case, denying multiple defense motions aimed at securing a retrial. Despite Allen's conviction and sentencing to 130 years in prison for the 2017 murders of Liberty "Libby" German and Abigail "Abby" Williams, his attorneys continue to argue that key evidence was withheld and new information has surfaced. In an order dated Feb. 14, Gull denied the defense's Verified Motion to Correct Error, a request filed on Jan. 20 seeking to vacate Allen's conviction. She also denied a second motion filed on Feb. 14 to strike the state's response, as well as a motion to correct the abstract of judgment. These rulings were entered into the case record on Feb. 18 and were made without a hearing. The defense's latest challenge revolves around an Indiana inmate, Ricci Davis, who claims that two men—Ron Logan and Kegan Kline—confessed their involvement in the murders. Logan, who owned the land where the girls were found, allegedly admitted to Davis that he committed the murders and provided details only the killer would know. Davis says Kline, a convicted child pornographer, later corroborated Logan's statements and expressed relief after Allen's conviction, believing it would keep him from being a suspect. Davis claims he sent as many as eight letters to Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland during Allen's trial, detailing what he was told. He also alleges that he provided a recorded interview to police. However, Allen's defense team has never seen these letters or the interview, and McLeland has refused to confirm whether they exist or were shared with the defense. “Ricci Davis was shocked to learn that Baldwin had never received this videotaped interview,” the defense wrote in their motion, referencing a conversation between Davis and Allen's attorney, Andrew Baldwin, in February 2025. The defense has accused McLeland of withholding evidence and failing to disclose whether the letters and recorded statements exist. Baldwin said he repeatedly asked for clarification but received no response from the prosecution. "McLeland's response was vague, non-responsive to the defense request and did not indicate whether he ever received those letters, nor whether he sent those letters to the defense," the defense motion states. Prosecutors have countered that Allen's attorneys had the opportunity to present evidence at trial and that Davis' claims are unreliable. The state revealed that Davis “miserably” failed a polygraph test when pressed about Logan's alleged confession. Davis, who is serving a 50-year prison sentence for meth distribution, admitted that he initially withheld some details in 2024 because he was unsure whether Allen was one of the men involved. However, in their February 2025 conversation, Davis told Baldwin that he later realized Allen was not the third person involved and tried to alert prosecutors. Now, Allen's defense team is pushing for the letters, interview recording, and any related communications to be preserved and turned over. They argue that the information could impact Allen's conviction and support their claims that he is innocent. Meanwhile, various media outlets have filed motions requesting the public release of certain case records, adding further pressure to the already contentious legal battle. With Judge Gull's latest rulings, Allen's conviction remains intact, but his defense team continues to challenge the state's handling of evidence. We kick off 2025 on Raise the Line by sharing some good news for providers struggling to keep up with the growing number of applications for genomic testing: a new book from Elsevier Science Direct has been designed to arm you with the knowledge you need. Genomics in the Clinic: A Practical Guide to Genetic Testing, Evaluation, and Counselingdives into the use of this important tool in diagnosis and screening, indicating how individuals may respond to drug therapies, and more. Kline. Join host Caleb Furnas for an illuminating episode on an area of discussion in medicine that's growing in importance as the use of genetic testing rapidly increases.Mentioned in this episode: Genomics in the Clinic: A Practical Guide

Sara originally got Jack as a running buddy when she lived in England, but it wasn't long before Jack decided he liked pointing pheasants along their runs, too. Sara has grown a lot in her journey training her dogs and is very forthcoming about the mistakes she's made along the way and how she's trying to use the lessons she's learned with her new puppy. Family caregiving is a profound and complex journey, particularly when faced with dementia or terminal illnesses. In this podcast episode, a replay of a Books & Chit Chat discussion, we delve into the experiences of Malia Kline, co-author of "Sisterly Shove." She shares her heartfelt story of caring for her aging parents and the intricate dynamics encountered with her physician sister and co-author Diane Stinson.  Malia's caregiving journey begins with her family grappling with the twin burdens of her father's dementia and her mother's pancreatic cancer. Malia and Diane had differing views on their care, which involved moving each parent cross-country from one sister's care to the other's. Diane, a pathologist, believed different medical decisions could extend their lives. Malia wished them relief from suffering even if it resulted in death. However, these differing perspectives did not create a chasm between them; instead, they brought the sisters closer in their shared mission. Writing a book with alternating chapters from each perspective helped in this process.  For Malia, writing "Sisterly Shove" with Diane was not just a story-telling endeavor but a therapeutic journey. The collaborative process allowed them to alternate writing and editing chapters, facilitating understanding and maintaining their relationship. Their book provides an intimate perspective on caregiving challenges, sibling dynamics, and their fight against the medical establishment. Through excerpts read during the podcast, we gain insights into how the sisters' different approaches reflected their childhood personalities and shaped their caregiving strategies. Malia emphasizes the importance of journaling and writing as tools for preserving memories and coping with the complex emotions of caregiving. In this episode, you will: Understand the impact of dementia on the entire family dynamic, not just the individual.Learn how to navigate complex sibling dynamics in elder care to foster a more cohesive and collaborative caregiving approach.Discover effective coping strategies when caring for a loved one with dementia, creating a more harmonious caregiving environment.See how writing is a powerful tool for processing and managing the emotional complexities of caregiving. The Spark Weekly 12.29.2024: The History Behind Kwanzaa and Hannukah

The Jewish week-long festival will take place in just a few days. This year, Hanukkah falls on the night of December 25 and ends on January 2. Zach Benjamin, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Harrisburg and Marc Kline, Interim Rabbi of the Temp Ohev Shalom joined to the spark to share more information. The history of Hanukkah begins 2200 years ago.“The Syrian Greeks were in control of what we now call Israel Palestine, and they brought Greek culture, which was replacing the existing Jewish culture, and they trashed the temple and didn't destroy, but they trashed and were sacrificing pigs on the altar. And Jews said, we can't let this happen. And so Matthias and Judah Maccabee and their followers warred against the Syrian Greeks and they defeated the Greeks and rededicated the temple. The rest of the story becomes a matter of different versions of history. The story everybody seems to know is that when they went to light the lights on the altar, they had one cruise of oil that hadn't been destroyed. They thought it would last for one day and it lasted for eight. That story's first written about 500 years later. Many of the versions of the story, though, deal with the fact that we changed the practice from Pagan to to God at the altar, that people stopped the war to rededicate themselves to God. So whatever story you're looking at, we're looking at bringing the light of peace and faith over the ugliness of paganism and war, “said Kline.Zach Benjamin explained the significance of sundown and those eight days of Hanukkah.“Well, in at its most basic, the Hebrew calendar and the Gregorian calendar, what we think of as our typical calendar, they're different in a number of ways. The Hebrew calendar has 13 months. The our Western calendar has 12 months. And another way that they are different is that the Hebrew day begins at sundown and goes from sundown to sundown. And thus Hanukkah, like all other Jewish observances, begins at sundown on the first day. And Hanukkah lasts eight days. And so it goes until sundown.” Also on The Program: Kwanzaa honors unity, pride, and African traditions from December 26 to January 1. This celebration brings people together by sharing stories, lighting candles, and community. Naaja Rodgers, Professor of Africana studies at Dickinson College says Kwanzaa is a Kiswahili word.“So it's actually a Kiswahili word, which means maternal, your Kwanzaa, which means first fruits. So essentially Kwanzaa means first fruit. And these are typically celebrations that are held throughout Africa.”Kwanza was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga. He was a part of a cultural nationalist group that promoted African culture.“The Watts riots in Los Angeles and just the racial tensions going on during the Black Power movement inspired him to think about what we can do to kind of help African people as a collective Pan-African. Keep that theme intact. How can we ensure that black people are able to reason to remember and prepare for the new Year as opposed to just like the commercialization of Christmas where it's like a hustle and bustle, you're shopping and then you give a gift and then you go on to the new year.”There are seven principles of Kwanzaa: Umoja (Unity) Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) Nia (Purpose) Kuumba (Creativity) Imani (Faith)Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sokuzan leads us through "Opening The Eye Mind" Awareness practice, using as the artwork, "Cornered" by Philip Guston (born Phillip Goldstein, June 27, 1913 – June 7, 1980) . Guston was a Canadian American painter, printmaker, muralist and draftsman. In a career of constant struggle and evolution, Philip Guston emerged first in the 1930s as a social realist painter of murals in the 1930s. Much later he also evolved a unique and highly influential style of cartoon realism. But he made his name as an Abstract Expressionist. He avoided the muscular gestures of painters such as Pollock and Kline, and opted for a lighter touch, painting shimmering abstractions in which forms seem to hover like mists in the foreground. Women have always played a large role in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But how do women today, especially women of color, negotiate their faith through a historically patriarchal religion? And how can western scholars really probe this issue for women around the globe, without enforcing their own pre-conceived paradigms? On this episode of Scholars & Saints, Nicholas speaks with Dr. Caroline Kline, Assistant Director for Global Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University, about her 2022 book, Mormon Women at the Crossroads: Global Narratives and the Power of Connectedness. Dr. Kline engages oral histories from her ethnographic study of Mormon women of color in the U.S., Botswana, and Mexico. In so doing, she presents two major theoretical lenses that look at Mormon women's agency from their own perspective: through connectedness to loving families, strong communities, and a profoundly loving, personal God.To find out more about Dr. Kline and her upcoming projects, click here.
