Why are so many diverse books banned? Every year the library celebrates Banned Books Week and the freedom to read. Banned Books Week is an opportunity to call attention to the books most frequently targeted for censorship. Increasingly, books by diverse authors or about diverse communities wind up on the list of most challenged titles. Comic book authors Jonathan Hill (Americus), Anina Bennett (Boilerplate), and Tristan Tarwater (The Marauders' Island) will discuss this trend and express a vision for how greater inclusion means a stronger future for intellectual freedom. This panel discussion is presented and moderated by Charles Brownstein of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Made possible by The National Endowment for the Humanities Fund of The Library Foundation. Recorded Live at Central Library: September 26, 2016

Welcome to Episode 41 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with Charles Brownstein, Executive Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. “It’s important to be able to disagree and offend…Its more important to have the opportunity to be wrong or to have the opportunity to be offended than to go through life where nothing challenges or nothing has a rough edge. “ Free speech and censorship are the topics of today’s episode. Charle has been the Executive Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) since 2002. Charles gives us some background on how and when he became interested in both comics and free-speech issues, beginning in childhood with movies like Pump up the Volume and Batman (1989). Charles discusses growing up in the 90’s, and interviewing artists such as Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Will Eisner for a magazine he published in high school. Most of this interview focuses on the problem of censorship, and how First Amendment rights are at risk as a result of print-media protests. We’ll discuss a number of historic free-speech cases from the last 20 years, and Charles will talk about the importance of protecting speech rights regardless of how a piece of art makes someone feel. Charles covers vulgarity in comic books, school library books of “sensitive nature,” and why Manga is not child pornography. Lastly, we discuss the “chilling effect” or the psychological impact censoring acts have on artists and art culture, and the importance of protecting free speech at all costs. This very special and important podcast was recorded live, October 14,2012 at the NY Comic Con. Brownstein is the Director of the CBLDF an organization dedicated to keeping Comic Books legal. Founded in 1986, the CBLDF has defended the 1st Amendment Right of Comic book retailers, artists, and now, readers: "Legal Defense: Since 1986, the CBLDF has managed and paid for the legal defense of individuals whose First Amendment rights are threatened for making, selling, or even reading comic books. We also provide free referrals for cases before they rise to the level of a court challenge. Most recently, the CBLDF successfully defended Ryan Matheson, an American citizen who was unlawfully arrested at Canada Customs and wrongly charged with importing child pornography for having innocuous manga images on his laptop computer. Ryan's case cost $75,000, of which the Fund has raised $30,000. We are currently raising money to pay off the remaining $40,000 of that legal debt.Legal Advocacy: The CBLDF works independently and with coalitions to fight unconstitutional legislation that would affect how comics are made and distributed. We were active plaintiffs in the fight against compulsory internet filters in libraries. Most recently, we helped knock out an unconstitutional Utah bill to censor Internet speech, and were cited by the United States Supreme Court in a case against a California law that sought to broaden the definition of speech not protected by the First Amendment to include violent images."CBLDF is also an active participant in BANNED BOOKS WEEK, and other educational outreach programs.
