It's our annual check-in with Becks Quirk, while Kris is recovering from Women's Week in P-town! Becks and Tara talk about what's changed in the last year, where they're at, what keeps them motivated, as well as Becks's reflections after Banned Books Week. Official Recommendations From Becks: Every Step She Takes by Alison Cochrun In keeping with the annual nature of her visits, Becks's official recommendation this week is another Alison Cochrun audiobook, Every Step She Takes. A bout of turbulence provokes Sadie into coming out and sharing her deepest secrets with her seat companion, Mal, only to learn they're both joining the same tour of Camino de Santiago in Portugal. Becks is a sucker for physical journeys that exhaust the body and mind, leading to revelations and change. From Tara: Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti Tara's official recommendation this week is Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti. Lady Georgiana Cleeve is the author of many popular novels, which helps her support herself and her mother. When Lady Darling's books are equally popular and have details that are eerily similar to Georgiana's own books, Georgiana knows she has to unmask Lady Darling. She's in for the shock of her life when Lady Darling ends up being none other than Georgiana's teenage crush. Tara loved the emotional journeys in this one and how it plays with conventions from gothic novels. Stories aren't just how we pass time—they're how we pass on what it means to be human. We sit down with librarian and children's literature expert Betsy Bird to unpack why reading aloud is more than a bedtime ritual. It's brain food during the fastest phase of neural growth; a daily practice that builds language, attention, and the social skill that holds every relationship together: empathy. We dive into research showing how literary fiction boosts theory of mind, helping kids understand that other people think and feel differently than they do. That skill matters in a polarized world where algorithms reward outrage and flatten nuance. Books slow us down long enough to inhabit another mind—what author John Green calls “shrinking the empathy gap.” We also confront the rise of organized book bans: why diverse stories and queer themes draw fire, how librarians already vet collections for age and quality, and what censorship really fears—children learning to perspective-take beyond the boundaries someone else drew for them.Betsy shares three unforgettable picture books parents can use tonight. The Rabbit Listened models presence over fixing;  Sorry You Got Mad turns a bad apology into a real one; Touch the Sky reframes perseverance as a long, honest process. Along the way, we honor Banned Books Week as a reminder to protect access to complex stories. If this conversation sparked an idea or gave you something to try with your kids, subscribe, leave a quick review, and share this episode with one parent who'd love it. We're back for Season 9, and we're kicking things off with something a little different: a full-on chat about Banned Books Week 2025.The theme this year is “Censorship Is So 1984.” Which, honestly… yeah, that tracks.I'm joined once again by my friend, and academic, Michael Pons, who's currently deep in his PhD studies. Together, we dive into what book bans really mean for readers, for kids, and for the stories that shape how we see the world. We talk about The Giver, Homegoing, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Perks of Being a Wallflower, all books that changed us, and all books that, somehow, keep ending up on banned lists. We also get into the bigger picture: what censorship looks like in media, the weird double standards around “protecting the children,” and why discomfort in reading (and in general) is actually a good thing. It's one of those conversations that reminds me why I started this podcast in the first place — because stories matter. And because banning books doesn't protect anyone; it just limits what we get to imagine. So grab a blanket, grab a banned book, and settle in for the start of Season 9.Happy Banned Books Week, and happy reading. To check out Michael's podcast: https://m.soundcloud.com/aychpodcast/sets/the-instruction-booklet?fbclid=PAT01DUANRSs9leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABp4Rt4vUOXi_VYnCR1b7F_gV28Nu-gA-Knw7F1VStsqPUnMIMz80uHw8k3WZR_aem_bJOcZPxyFiZZqGh7zPahWAIf you have an author, book, or topic you want to hear about on the podcast, then don't hesitate to slide into my DMs on Instagram or shoot me an email!Subscribe to my newsletter to keep up to date on the latest podcast happenings: https://in-bed-with-books.kit.com/76d11f1d51Where else to find me:IG: @inbedwithbookspodYT: https://www.youtube.com/@InBedWithBooksPodEM: inbedwithbookspodcast@gmail.com

This week Elizabeth is joined by librarian and frequent contributor, Pamela Hayes-Bohanan who, in anticipation of Banned Books Week, gives us the latest news on attempts to remove books from our libraries. The majority of book censorship attempts now originate from organized movements, pressure groups, and government entities, including elected officials. While concerns about content or appropriate category for shelving used to come from individuals, book bans are now most commonly initiated by activists who may never have seen the book or patronized the library they've targeted.  The titles most frequently targeted for censorship appear on partisan lists. Websites provide a forum for sharing author names, book titles, and tools to demand censorship of more titles in more libraries.  Pam helps us understand what that means for our public, private, K-12 and college libraries.  We also discuss what it means for education and society more broadly.  Pam encourages us to celebrate the right to read.Podcast notesThe American Library Association sponsors Banned Books Week annually to promote awareness, remind us that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and most of all to celebrate the right to read. More information about Banned Books Week can be found here:  https://www.ala.org/bbooks/banned Since our podcast this happened: Texas School Administrators Use A.I. Rebecca Leber-Gottberg talks to us about the history of the bookstore, her role there, and books that folks in Boise have been buying, but she also explains the bookstore's Read Freely Project, which is their effort to get banned and threatened books dispersed throughout the community.    And in our book rec section, we're jumping into spooky season with books related to ghosts, but if you don't like horror, don't worry: a lot of these “ghostly” books aren't horror, and some of them may only seem to be about ghosts. We've got a historical fiction about the Sri Lankan civil war, a detective story in which ghosts are witnesses, a nonfiction book about unexplained phenomena which may or may not involve ghosts, a funny novella, a supernatural suspense, and a ghostly gothic novel set in Mexico.   Books Discussed in this Episode: 1- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway 2- The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve House, Four Patients' Lives by Theresa Brown 3- American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men Who Became America's First Paramedics by Kevin Hazzard 4- The Queen Bees of Tybee County by Kyle Casey Chu 5- The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer  6- Trans History: A Graphic Novel by Alex L. Banned Books Week (launched in 1982) is normally in September/October, but given the state of things, we thought it was a relevant topic. Buying physical copies of books, when you can, seems to be a smart thing to do.   PEN estimates that book bans have doubled in the past year; here's where to fight that by sending a letter to state lawmakers.    Some of our sources: Data from the ALA; Unite Against Book Bans; National Coalition Against Censorship; PEN America; Authors Against Book Bans    Recommended in this episode: B.R. One of our favorite interviews from 2024 (originally airing during Banned Books Week) ..... Karl Weber, author and editor of "Why Books Still Matter: Honoring Joyce Meskis: Essays on Books, Bookselling, and Publishing." Joyce Meskis was the founder of the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver, CO - one of the most famous independent bookstores in the country, and a business that helped revolutionize the public's notion of what a great bookstore could and should be. The interview also includes considerable discussion about the phenomenon of book banning - and how the practice of book banning tends to be detrimental to the health of a democracy.

So it turns out that the US is super aware of all the war crimes perpetrated by that "only democracy in the Middle East." So much so that two major US government agencies made reports about it and handed it to Sec. of State Blinken...who then went on to lie to Congress about it.  As the fallout from Hurricane Helene begins to be reckoned with, it's becoming more and more clear that climate refugees are as American as abject poverty - and thanks to the latter, you can't just move out of the way of climate chaos. That takes money, and if not money, at the very least it takes government support, of which we have none.  It's Banned Books Week so it seems an apt time to point out that while books pedestaling the institution of slavery have pride of place on library shelves, the dictionary is being pulled pending investigation. While we're off this week, we're encouraging everyone to listen to our Stop Book Banning episode, rereleased with new content! This week, we're talking to Maggie Tokuda-Hall, one of the founders of Authors Against Book Bans about the growth of book bans around the country in 2024. Book bans in United States schools and libraries are at their highest since the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom started collecting data, happening around the country, in every state, and disproportionately affecting books by and about LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC people. What's more, challenges are likely underreported, because librarians who are resisting them are facing unprecedented workplace retribution and in some cases physical danger.Book Bans are on the ballot this year in every state and local election, up and down the ticket. State legislatures, local town councils, county leadership and school boards are being overrun with candidates supported by conservative activists looking to limit access to books and ideas that offer identity, empathy, awareness, and power to young people around the country. We're concerned, so today, we're releasing a special episode of Fated Mates focused on book bans across the country. We interview three experts on what's happening, who is most impacted, and how we can all help. Show notes are extensive, and we hope you'll take a look at them.
