59 Comic Book Bans & Challenges

ALIA Graphic Podcast

Unfortunately we have to talk about challenges, bans and censorship of comics and graphic novels. This is not something we'd like to talk about but it's an important conversation and there are some uncomfortable truths we must face.In this special episode, we discuss challenges and bans to books and specifically to comics in libraries across the United States of America. Looking from a distance, the current wave of challenges and bans the US is going through seems alien to us. We are concerned about what's going on. We are concerned that teachers and librarians are being targeted and intimidated. We are concerned that comics, graphic novels, and books are being pulled off the shelves. Even titles that have won awards, have received world wide recognition and have been part of the curriculum for years. We've been concerned for months and we have shared our support and solidarity with our American colleagues. But, of course, to be concerned from a distance is not enough. While we may feel that what's happening has nothing to do with us in Australia, we know that very often these kind of actions get exported to other countries. It could happen in Australia and we should not be complacent. We're also aware that while we don't suffer the kind of challenges that we're seeing in the US, there are still issues in Australia. Teachers and librarians who are prejudiced against comics. Parents who question their kids and insist that they read a 'real' book. But reading is reading and reading comics we use multiple literacies, we use more parts of our brain. We wanted to reach out to our friends in the American Library Association's Graphic Novels and Comics Roundtable. Specifically, we wanted to talk with members of the Addressing Comic Book Bans & Challenges Committee. We had a great discussion with Amie Wright chair of the committee, together with Kara Baker, Shawn Norton and Julia Lanter. Iurgi Urrutia from Kingston Libraries in Victoria and James Baker from the Athenaeum Library in Melbourne hosted this wide ranging, and we believe, very relevant conversation. To stay up to date with ALIA Graphic, subscribe to our blog: https://aliagraphic.blogspot.com You can also follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ALIAGraphicHit the subscribe button for our podcast and blog and please leave us a glowing review, it will make you feel warm and fuzzy and every little bit helps.Episode Notes: GNCRT Toolkit: https://www.ala.org/rt/gncrt/preparing-and-addressing-challenges-comics-library-committeeGNCRT Checklist: https://www.ala.org/rt/sites/ala.org.rt/files/content/GNCRT/ComicsChallenges/GNCRT%20Be%20Prepared%20Postcard_PRINT.pdf GNCRT Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScY2TYLrurWP6sT9ifMSsne-98AEYJylUTDUgBvWB3n1RJtJA/viewform No Flying No Tights: Ask the Comics Librarians series of articles: https://noflyingnotights.com/browse-our-ask-the-comics-librarians-columns/ ‘Divisive Concepts Law' New Hampshire - op-ed piece on the impact of the law in classrooms and on teachers https://newhampshirebulletin.com/2021/08/10/commentary-new-hampshires-divisive-concepts-law-and-the-big-chill/ History of Comics Censorship in the United States via CBLDF https://cbldf.org/resources/history-of-comics-censorship/ History of Comics Censorship in Canada via Ryerson University 1950s - “Crisis of Innocence: Comic Books and Children's Culture, 1940-1954” https://crisisofinnocence.library.ryerson.ca/exhibits/show/a-crisis-of-innocenceJason Reynolds When I was the Greatest https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/When-I-Was-the-Greatest/Jason-Reynolds/9781442459496 Fobazi Ettarh, "Vocational Awe and Librarianship: The Lies We Tell Ourselves." About The EpisodeRecently, the McMinn County school board in Tennessee decided to ban the classroom use of the graphic novel Maus, which depicts a firsthand account of the Holocaust via anthropomorphic animals. The decision was met with criticism across the United States and has been the subject of extensive news coverage, as well as social media mentions. It has also led to a surge of the book back to the top of numerous best-seller lists and even selling out on Amazon. In this episode of The Captioned Life Podcast, Sean and Kevin talk with educator Jill Gerber, and the Coalition Coordinator for Banned Books Week at the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Betsy Gomez, to discuss the controversy and its impact on teachers, students, parents, and beyond. This is a timely conversation about the relevance of graphic novels as educational literature and the alarming trend of banning non-traditional texts from school libraries and curricula.About The GuestsJill Gerber is an award-winning K-12 educator of twenty years and a longtime advocate of graphic literature in the curriculum to reach all learners. It was a resounding victory for free speech advocates and the first time the Supreme Court has considered a high school free speech case since its disappointing 2007 ruling in Morse v. Frederick. On today's episode of So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast, we analyze the Supreme Court's ruling in Mahanoy Area School District v. Ninth grader Brandi Levy was frustrated when she didn’t make her high school’s varsity cheerleading team so she posted an intemperate video about it on Snapchat to her 250 “friends.” Four years later, that video, which led to her suspension from the junior varsity cheer team, will take center stage at the United States Supreme Court.  Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. is a case that University of Florida Professor Frank LoMonte says will determine “the future of student free speech.” On today’s episode of So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast, we are joined by LoMonte, who also leads the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information, and FIRE Program Officer Lindsie Rank to discuss the Mahanoy case, which could answer some important lingering questions about student speech rights off-campus and on social media. The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments in the case on Wednesday, April 28. A decision is expected this summer. We also get into his obsessions with comics and design, the broad meaning of First Amendment law (and why R Sikoryak's recent Constitution Illustrated should be required reading), how to learn from ethics disasters, how nonprofits can grow and how they can become sclerotic, his childhood McLuhan-inspired interpretation of the theme to the Batman TV show, how our mutual friend Tom Spurgeon was the hub of the comics industry, and what it's been like to live without him. s08 INCIDENTAL EPISODE - In Conversation with JEFF TREXLER (COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND C.B.L.D.F. Special) The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (C.B.L.D.F.) is an organisation that serves to be in the corner of creators, administrators and publishers in the comic industry, fighting for the legal and financial powers of those that find themselves on the other side of any oppressive challenge to their work. This is something that been a worthy cause for decades - but, in recent weeks, the C.B.L.D.F. has been under intense scrutiny, due to the reprehensible actions of its now-removed Director, taking place and hidden under the carpet over many years. Jeff Trexler is an author, an attorney and now the Interim Director of the C.B.L.D.F., and he finds himself in the unenviable task of not only restoring the reputation of the organisation, if possible, while also making the case for the organisations continued existence, in the face of many who believe that the good that has been done has been forever tarnished by the bad. Jeff joins me to talk about his feelings about the C.B.L.D.F., what he wants for the organisation going forward, how he intends to communicate with those who have been wronged, and more. It’s another Dork Expedition out and about. We meet dorks in their natural habitat! works at and her mom (Janet Winter) owns . We wander.   I didn’t edit this AT ALL before going to the Middle East. My use of language in this episode is randomly inaccurate. Fantastic. I just let Pat sound fix this so it’s more meander-y than I might have let it be if I edited. I hope you enjoy it. I had a blast. At Image it’s chatty with a lot of us talking … and I have a hard time leaving and it digresses into lunch talk.   Then we go to the toy store and talk about toys. At length. At the end of the interview we find out that Janet designs costumes and then it’s back to CONS… more convention talk. Obviously... sitting down with Branwyn's mom, in the future, to get some dork history, is in order.   Notes: (video of a baby doing this) We lunch in Berkley at a great restaurant: – Don sells dice. (actually a chain of motels) . (Drew Oliver is the owner & I bought friends syphilis and penicillin). Janet Winter’s costume books - and And… it ends abruptly. There’s gonna be a learning curve on these expeditions. Thanks for listening! Take care out there. Jackie   My website has a player, standup schedule and videos, the merch (CD/T-shirt opportunities), the donation button: or .The , , and a very basic free app for the are available.   Credits: Audio leveling by (part of a great production company in NY)The music is by . Reviews:  Abyss Family Issues #1, Crossed Psychopath #1, Mission #1  Jimmy welcomes back good buddy (by your demands!) Jon Hoche (pictured center) to co-host! We record at the Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company's rehearsal space, The Battle Ranch. Joining us for the ride is VCTC co-artistic director Qui Nguyen (picture right) and company member Amy Waschke (pictured left)! They are currently in rehearsals for their new show THE INEXPLICABLE REDEMPTION OF AGENT G. It's an All-Asian podcasting crew!  *Well, it's Jimmy's first show without God Joe doing the tech and as expected...it's a train wreck. Apologies in advance for the madness! It's strictly recorded on the digital recorder. Jimmy also randomly and mostly by accident took a bunch of calls from friends like Emmy award winning Michael Emerson (Lost), Kevin Maguire (Tanga), Jill Pantozzi (The Nerdy Bird), and Ben Templesmith (Choker, 30 Days of Night). He just held up the mic to the phone speaker so hopefully we got the sound. Some embarrassing reveleations to be sure! Genital pics, strip club visits, a possible baby mama, and much more. The Asians talk the Oscars (even with a song), Fillion's reply to Browncoat crazies and how to go about contacting someone in the comic book field. News includes: Powers TV show gets greenlit (BREA GRANT FOR DEENA PILGRIM!!), Kaboom! to release Peanuts graphic novel, Eisner on display at MoCCA, Leigh Gallagher (Defoe) gets a royal stamp, Oni Press mix tape and CBLDF comic creator trading cards. Listener feedback and more!
