Myths and legends are a massive part of our culture. We have the original versions of them that still stay with us, mostly intact, but because of how important and well known they are we're always getting new versions of them that are changed and added to to reflect our contemporary culture. Big stories like King Arthur, Robin Hood, Beowulf, the Odyssey, The Journey to the West and many other stories keep getting new versions in our modern world. The Greek myths beings quite old, very detailed, and well written get a LOT of different versions, which has been happening since antiquity. Even the Romans like Ovid revised them, his versions were made to reflect his own cultural and political realities. Most recently there's the Nolan version of the Odyssey coming out. Some are annoyed at the various non-white people in certain roles, but that's a trend that's been popular for about 30-40 years or so and simply reflects our modern diverse cultural and ethnic makeup. The only thing that irks me are the stupid costumes and reinterpretation of the armour, but also the silly commentary concerning it- on one hand you have supporters of the crude fantasy styles in the film and on the other supporters of ancient Mycenaean styles. The thing is though that Ancient Greeks ALWAYS depicted their mythological figures armoured like hoplites (or naked), with Corinthian helmets. That wasn't a case of them showing the figures in contemporary fashions either- hundreds of years after those styles were dead they were still used for the characters. So there was never a need to reinterpret them OR imagine them in archaic "historically accurate" styles, they should always be shown as classical Greek warriors. /rant Beowulf shows up in various ways, there are direct and indirect interpretations. One of the interesting aspects is that people use the monster, Grendel, for their indirect interpretations- Everything from Friday the 13th (the first one), to Frankenstein (at least as an inspiration to the various adaptations), Jaws, The 13th Warrior, Split Second (a monster in futuristic flooded London), you could even include Predator and Alien. Journey to the West is a very important story to many cultures in eastern Asia because it's tied closely with Buddhism and the spread of that religion on the continent. It was important to me when I grew up with endless TV repeats of the dubbed Japanese series Monkey Magic, starring Masaaki Sakai, Japanese pop sensation (The Spiders), and perennial charismatic TV personality. It featured comedy, endless fighting with demons and monsters, and the retelling of various stories. This version was so popular that people have remade it rather than just the myth itself, and it's inspired films and TV shows with the costumes it used for the characters. Many others now know the myth through the Dragon Ball anime and Manga, with Goku as the Monkey King. Disney's anthro version of Robin Hood had a gigantic impact on the creation of furry culture. The King Arthur myth, focussing on the heroic journey of a random, scruffy orphan into a prophesied king of a nation shows up everywhere in fantasy and Scifi, examples include Star Wars and the fantasy series The Belgariad and Malloreon by David Eddings and many others, including more direct versions like Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, Disney's Sword in the Stone, and the fantastic Excalibur. The Jewish myth of David and the giant Goliath show up over and over in things too because of the focus on an underdog who triumphs despite huge odds and then goes on to become a famous ruler. I am using a section of a bike inner tube as a large rubber band to hold Allen wrenches and an extra battery on that brace. I put a Gideon Alpha on it and am very pleased. Thanks for the recommendation.   Kermit Thee Frog - Just wanted to follow up on my previous question about the Warhawk 3-15. A couple weeks before you guys got to my message I stumbled on an Athlon Helos BTR Gen2 4-20 for just over 500 doll hairs. It has locking turrets and zero stop while also decent weight for its class. I've been able to use it to shoot out to 900, 1100 and a 16x16 plate at 1300 yards with a 20” 6.5 Grendel AR. I'm really impressed with the glass quality and eye relief. The turrets also feel really good. The image gets a little dark at 20x as well as tight exit pupil but I don't think it's really that bad at all for this price point. I've been shooting the 16x16 plate at 1300 on 16x and can clearly see my hits without any purple fringing or other clarity issues. For the price of this optic I would highly recommend it.Also I have to say the Grendel has really surprised me. It seems we've always had monsters among us. We've long been enthralled by dragons and and giants, by the likes of Frankenstein and Godzilla and Dracula, by witches and werewolves and countless others. They roam our maps and creation myths; they crop up in our dreams, in our children's books, in our political rhetoric. Where do these beings spring from? What do they do for us? How have they changed over time? And, ultimately, what do our monsters say about their makers? My guests today are Dr. Natalie Lawrence and Dr. Surekha Davies. Both are historians of science and authors of recent books on monsters: Natalie's book is Enchanted creatures: Our monsters and their meanings. Surekha's book is Humans: A monstrous history. Here, Surekha, Natalie, and I talk about monsters as category breakers and boundary walkers—and about how monstrosity is in the eye of the beholder. We walk through a menagerie of monsters—from the apocryphal blemmyes of old travelogues, to a hairy-faced girl in 16th century France, to the figure of Caliban in The Tempest. We discuss the psychological and cultural forces that generate monsters. And we talk about whether anyone would want to live in a world without them. Along the way we touch on, the "monstrification" of social groups; psychoanalysis; our primal fear of snakes; curiosity cabinets; therianthropes and the Cave of the Three Brothers; the relationship between the monstrosity and geography; our long fascination with so-called monstrous births; the Muppet Show; dinosaurs and sea creatures; and the question what monsters might do for children in particular. Hwæt a Movie is back! This time we dive deep into the uncanny valley epic Beowulf from 2007. Released at the height of Robert Zemeckis's motion-capture mania, this version of our favorite Old English classic promised to bring the poem to life like never before. It was slated to be an event like no other, at least for John and Andy. In this star-studded and CG-saturated film, Ray Winstone voices a Beowulf who looks suspiciously like an action figure and swaggers like he just killed nine nicors. He's accompanied by the ageless Wiglaf, played by Brendan Gleeson. The great Anthony Hopkins plays a jovial but somewhat mad King Hrothgar, Robin Wright plays the deeply troubled Queen Wealhtheow, and John Malkovich does his best John Malkovich as Unferth. But if we're honest, this is the Grendel family's movie from start to finish. Crispin Glover turns in a unforgettable performance as a Grendel who swells with anger and shrinks with vulnerability. Grendel's mother is a gold-dipped, shape-shifting femme fatale with stiletto feet. She's also very much Angelina Jolie. And then there's Grendel's little half-brother dragon. That's right, the dragon is part of the family! Is this adaptation a clever deconstruction of heroism and myth-making? Or just an excuse to get Beowulf naked on an animated dragon? Zemeckis, Gaiman, and Avary take some bold liberties with the source material in this one, and we're here to guide you through it all from the perspective of two curmudgeonly middle-aged medievalists. As always, this episode of Hwæt a Movie includes a thorough summary and discussion of the film, a brief Q&A, and our final ratings: how well the film handles Beowulf, Grendel, and Grendel's mother, plus our ever-important scores for faithfulness to the source and overall entertainment value. Beowulf (2007) was a wild ride to discuss, and we hope you enjoy it half as much as Beowulf enjoys shouting his own name. Grendel VVept is a bizarre book that I can kind of describe as Joycean cosmic horror, but that doesn't cover everything. Traveling through time and prose styles, from today to Renaissance Italy to Sumer to ages even more distant, it's disorienting in a fascinating way. Playing God, the other book of Serret's that I read for this episode, is a tight novella set in 1969 America, with a lot of teenage lesbianism. CP Serret has range.Early on in recording (within the first five or six minutes), Serret's microphone started acting up. I ended up cutting a few minutes out, because the audio quality was so grating. Amaya, just a young teen, seemed like any other kid glued to her phone—always texting, always scrolling. But after hosting a small party at their Buckhead home in February, she died by suicide. Her Snapchat told the story: her friend group had turned on her, bombarding her with cruel messages for hours. TikTok’s algorithm didn’t help, feeding her sad songs and dark content, pulling her deeper. “It was poison,” LaBella said. He and other grieving parents are now urging lawmakers to rein in social media’s unchecked influence. STORY 3: State tax collections on the rise in August Georgia’s tax collections ticked up 3.2% in August compared to the same time last year, pulling in $2.41 billion, the state Department of Revenue said Tuesday. What’s behind the bump? Individual income tax receipts rose 1.8%, thanks to a nearly 10% drop in refunds. Sales tax collections also jumped—up 8.2%. But not everything climbed. Corporate income taxes, which make up a smaller slice of the pie, dropped 11%, down $4.5 million from last year. This fall, more than 12,777 students are enrolled—the second-highest fall enrollment in the school’s history and the 10th straight semester of growth. The freshman class alone boasts over 2,100 new faces, and international enrollment jumped 7.5%. Health sciences saw an 18% spike, with education close behind at 11%. As GGC marks 20 years, it’s come a long way—from 118 students to nearly 13,000. I had it threaded a few years ago but since the barrel profile is so thin, it's threaded 1/2x28. Most 30 cal cans are threaded 5/8x24 so I'd have to run a thread adapter for a can. Would you a) use a thread adapter and affix it in a permanent/semi-permanent fashion, b) purchase a 30 cal can able to accept a 1/2x28 thread pattern, or c) get an aftermarket barrel with a heavier profile that is cut for 5/8x24? Use case is long range plinking and hunting. Barrel length is 24" if that matters. Bradley C - Dear WLS With the recent abatement of the NFA tax, and the further conversation surrounding the complete repeal of the NFA, have any 2A space influencers considered the implication of a full repeal, nation wide? As much as many of us in the 2A sphere hoped for it's demise in the BBB, the State level consequences could be detrimental. Let me explain: In the State of Oregon, and I believe there are twelve other States, with the full repeal of the NFA Federally, it would cost us the ability to own, possess, or purchase NFA items. As, at least here in Oregon, they are only able to be in existence, because the NFA is a de facto registry. At this time, Oregon does not have its own requirement to register firearms, but with the implementation of Measure 114 (still tied up in the courts) and the QUEEN Governor having just signed SB 243, the noose is tightening around the firearms owner's neck. Anyway, it is my belief, that the tax was dropped to zero dollars and the NFA maintained to allow these 13 +/- States the ability to keep those NFA items, as ATF maintains their de facto registry.
