Hwæt a Movie! returns with yet another adaptation of the epic Old English poem Beowulf. This time, we've got Outlander, a surprisingly fun tale of an alien crash-landing in 8th century Norway as he hunts down the monstrous Moorwen that killed his family. Of course, the Moorwen had some cause to be angry after a genocidal attack on the Moorwen planet. But let's not dwell on how it all started. Outlander is also a Beowulf story wrapped up in a neat little sci-fi package! This time around, Jim Caviezel stars as Kainan (our space Beowulf). You might know Caviezel from 2002's The Count of Monte Cristo or from 2004's The Passion of the Christ. He's joined by the beloved John Hurt as Rolhgar (I legitimately thought he was called Hrothgar through the whole movie and I'm only learning as I write this that he was Rolhgar...), the talented Sophia Miles as Freya, the dreamy Jack Huston as Wulfric, and the inimitable Ron Perlman as Gunnar. As always, we provide an extensive summary (prepared with exhaustive detail by John) and discussion, a brief Q&A inspired by the film, and then our final ratings categories for the film's take on Beowulf, Grendel, and Grendel's mother. Los cambios del oscarizado director en la epopeya griega indignan a los puristas. Hablamos de este nuevo clásico con el escritor Javier Negrete. En esta nueva entrega del pódcast Par Impar emitida en esRadio, los presentadores Juanma González y Dani Palacios, junto al escritor y especialista Javier Negrete, analizan una muy peculiar adaptación cinematográfica de La Odisea que supuestamente ha dirigido el cineasta Christopher Nolan. Los contertulios destripan esta hipotética superproducción con un tono cargado de humor y crítica, comparando la visión de Nolan con el mito clásico de Homero. La conversación se centra inicialmente en las decisiones técnicas y narrativas de la película, destacando el uso obsesivo del formato IMAX por parte de Nolan. Este sistema, aunque visualmente imponente, dificulta enormemente la filmación de las coreografías de combate en espacios cerrados. Los presentadores comparan este estilo con el de la película Troya, dirigida por Wolfgang Petersen, donde los enfrentamientos entre Brad Pitt y Eric Bana alcanzaron una cota de realismo y espectacularidad difícil de superar. Uno de los temas clave del debate es la representación de la ley de Zeus o la hospitalidad griega (xenia), un elemento sagrado en los poemas homéricos. El invitado Javier Negrete, autor de la novela Odisea editada por HarperCollins, explica cómo en la película de Nolan este concepto se simplifica para convertirlo en una suerte de justificación moral para la matanza final de los pretendientes, adaptándolo al estilo oscuro y denso del director. En cuanto al reparto, destaca la elección de Matt Damon para encarnar a un Ulises que se aleja del héroe astuto clásico para mostrarse como un soldado traumatizado y consumido por la culpa tras la caída de Troya, un enfoque muy en la línea de producciones como Oppenheimer. La actriz Anne Hathaway asume el papel de Penélope, logrando dotar de gran carga dramática a sus escenas frente a un joven Telémaco interpretado por Tom Holland. La película no escatima en licencias creativas y polémicas, como la inclusión del personaje de Sinón, interpretado por Elliot Page, que pertenece en realidad al ciclo troyano de la Eneida de Virgilio. Por su parte, la actriz Zendaya da vida a una Atenea que en esta versión no es una deidad física, sino una representación psicológica de la mala conciencia del protagonista, un recurso muy habitual en la filmografía de Nolan. La mitología fantástica se reinterpreta bajo un prisma de terror y ciencia ficción. El Cíclope es retratado como un gigante mutante con una deformidad ocular vertical, un diseño que combina efectos prácticos con CGI y que recuerda al Grendel de la película Beowulf de Robert Zemeckis. Del mismo modo, la escena de Circe —interpretada por Samantha Morton— se transforma en un pasaje de body horror donde los hombres se convierten en cerdos mediante impactantes efectos físicos. Finalmente, el análisis de la secuencia de las Sirenas y el regreso a Ítaca desvela la maestría de Nolan en el uso del recurso sonoro, ensordeciendo el ambiente para resaltar la música mientras los marineros usan cera en los oídos. Para cerrar la emisión, los presentadores repasan otras adaptaciones populares de la obra, como la comedia O Brother, Where Art Thou? de los hermanos Coen o la mítica versión teatral de El Joglars en los años setenta, concluyendo que esta original propuesta consigue acercar la literatura clásica al gran público.
