Changing the world is difficult. One reason is that the most important problems, like climate change and democracy reform are structural. They are larger than any one person can solve on their own, yet we're bombarded with information about individual actions like attending a public meeting or lowering your carbon footprint. Do these individual actions even matter? Should we focus instead of fixing broken systems?  For our final episode of the season, we explore how individual actions and structural reform can work together to create lasting social change on a range of issues, including democracy. Our guests offer a way out of the either-or thinking and a framework for creating lasting social change.  In Somebody Should Do Something: How Anyone Can Help Create Social Change, Michael Brownstein, Alex Madva, and Daniel Kelly show us how we can connect our personal choices to structural change and why individual choices matter, though not in the way people usually think. Brownstein and Kelly join us on the show to discuss examples of how individual actions leveled up to create larger-scale change, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the milk pasteurization movement in the early 20th century. We also discuss how the lessons from these movements can be applied to democracy reform campaigns like campaign finance reform and ranked-choice voting.  Brownstein is Professor and Chair of Philosophy at John Jay College and Professor of Philosophy at The Graduate Center, CUNY.. Kelly is Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University, where he is also the Director of the Cognition, Agency, and Intelligence Center. This is our final episode before our summer break. Thank you to Brandon Stover for editing the show this year, to WPSU for production and promotional support, and to Michael Berkman, Chris Beem, Cyanne Loyle, and Candis Watts Smith for sharing their insights on the show. If you've ever been confused about iodine, this is the interview you can't afford to miss. Dr. Brownstein explains why iodine is an essential nutrient the body simply cannot function without, why modern diets are no longer supplying enough, and how iodine levels today are dramatically lower than they were just a few decades ago. He breaks down the critical role iodine plays in thyroid function, breast health, brain health, and even cancer prevention—while addressing the alarming rise in thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer. Ann Louise and Dr. Brownstein also dive into the practical side—what forms of iodine actually work, including the history and clinical relevance of Lugol's Solution, the difference between iodine and iodide, and why a combination approach may be key. They discuss how proper iodine support may reduce the need for thyroid hormone medication in some cases, how much iodine the average adult truly needs, and why individuals with glandular conditions may require more. You'll also learn the best ways to test iodine levels, the surprising dietary factors that enhance iodine absorption, and the far-reaching consequences of deficiency—from fatigue and weight gain to neurological issues. This is a must-listen for anyone serious about optimizing thyroid health and understanding one of the most overlooked nutrients in modern medicine. The post The Iodine Crisis No One Is Talking About first appeared on Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS.

Dr. John Brownstein has been on the leading edge of digital health since medical school, where he was drawn to epidemiology because of the opportunity to use data sets for large-scale impact beyond the exam room. He's been on a hunt for data ever since, shaping a career that has spanned public health, technology, startups, and healthcare innovation.Dr. Brownstein helped develop Google Flu Trends, served as a healthcare advisor to Uber, and launched one of the first data analytics companies in public health, where he applied AI long before it became today's dominant topic. In 2015, he became Chief Innovation Officer at Boston Children's Hospital, where he has helped turn it into a proving ground for emerging technologies. With its manageable size, nimble culture, and an administration willing to invest in innovation, Dr. Brownstein has helped turn Boston Children's into an ideal setting for testing emerging technology. This environment, which put Boston Children's on the front edge of healthcare IT for more than a decade, has positioned it to help lead the current AI wave.In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Dr. Brownstein joined Keith Figlioli to discuss AI adoption, how it's changing health systems, and what those changes mean for the companies selling to them. They discussed topics including:The fast pace from pilots to production. Only half joking, Dr. Brownstein mentioned that his conversation with Keith would be outdated by the time the podcast aired. The reality is, everything related to AI is moving so quick – even in healthcare, which is bucking its reputation as a slow mover on tech adoption when it comes to AI. Health systems are no longer just dabbling in isolated pilots; they're taking significant steps toward broad deployment, using AI for intelligent automation, workflow support, and clinical tools in ways that are beginning to produce measurable impact. The build versus buy equation. After launching Boston Children's innovation program, Dr. Brownstein recognized that having a large engineering team wasn't sustainable and began turning to startups that could innovate and deploy quickly. But that tide is shifting again, with the ability to use AI for internal development. He hasn't closed the door on startups, but says the bar is much higher. Companies selling into providers will need to show a stronger moat – whether through proprietary data, regulatory expertise, deep workflow integration, or some other advantage that cannot be easily recreated in-house.Designing AI architecture. AI procurement has become much more strategic than investing in point solutions. Dr. Brownstein discussed how health systems need to think about foundation models, hyperscalers, core systems like Epic, and point solutions, and how they all fit together to benefit users including clinicians, researchers, patients and families. For startups and incumbents alike, success will depend not only on product performance, but on how well a solution fits into the broader technology stack health systems are now building around AI.Why culture is just as important as capability. Even with strong interest in AI across healthcare, adoption is not purely a technical issue. Dr, Brownstein notes that while demand for AI tools is high, there are also signs of fatigue and anxiety as AI becomes an unavoidable topic in boardrooms, leadership meetings, and day-to-day work. With real questions about trust and job impact, organizations will need to pair technical progress with a thoughtful approach to culture, communication, and workforce readiness. To hear Keith Figlioli and Dr. John Brownstein discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

In this episode of the Lean to the Left Podcast, host Bob Gatty sits down with Michael Brownstein, co-author of "Somebody Should Do Something", to explore how individual actions—often dismissed as insignificant—can ignite meaningful, systemic social change. At a time when Americans feel overwhelmed by climate change, racial injustice, economic inequality, and threats to democracy, Brownstein challenges the idea that only institutions or powerful leaders can make a difference. Instead, he introduces “both-and” thinking: the idea that personal choices and collective action are not opposites—but partners. From voting and social influence to community organizing and combating misinformation, this conversation digs into how small, visible actions can ripple outward, shaping norms, inspiring others, and building momentum for real reform. Brownstein also addresses political polarization, loyalty to authoritarian figures, and how despair can be broken through connection and shared purpose. This episode is a powerful reminder that change doesn't start “somewhere else”—it starts with people who decide to act -- and that's especially important in this era of Donald Trump and his apparent desire to be dictator of the world.

How to Lose Loudly: What the Left can Learn from the NRA

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2025 40:11

One of the most painful lessons of the Kirk assassination is that conservatives are running rings around progressives in political mobilization - especially of young Americans. So how to make the left relevant in America again? For the philosopher Michael Brownstein, co-author of Somebody Should Do Something, progressives need to learn to lose both cleverly and loudly. And they can learn from NRA on this. Despite holding positions unpopular with most Americans, Brownstein acknowledges that the NRA created a powerful social identity around gun ownership and leveraged it for decades of legislative victories through masterful political strategy and organization. Drawing from social science research on collective action, Brownstein argues that highly theatrical defeats—like the recent Texas Democrats' walkout or John Lewis' bloody fate on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965—can catalyze change by forcing opponents into untenable positions. The key isn't winning every battle, but making individual actions visible enough to shift social norms and inspire others, especially the young, to join the cause. So lose often and lose loudly, Brownstein says. It's a winning strategy. 1. Individual Actions Are Social Signals, Not Just Drops in the Bucket When you install solar panels or drive an electric car, the impact isn't just environmental—it's social. Research shows your neighbors are far more likely to adopt these behaviors after seeing you do it. Stop calculating carbon molecules; start thinking about social influence.2. The “Do-Gooder's Dilemma” Is a Corporate Invention From “jaywalking” (coined by 1920s car companies) to “personal carbon footprints” (popularized by BP), industries have systematically shifted responsibility for systemic problems onto individuals. Recognizing this manipulation is the first step to effective collective action.3. Losing Loudly Can Be More Powerful Than Winning Quietly The Texas Democrats knew they'd lose their walkout fight. For The New Yorker's series Takes, Carrie Brownstein—the co-creator of Sleater-Kinney and “Portlandia”—writes about an iconic rock-and-roll image. In the summer of 2003, the musician Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, was transitioning from an indie darling to a major rock artist, and the staff writer Hilton Als wrote a Profile of her in The New Yorker. Facing his piece was a full-page portrait of Marshall by the celebrated photographer Richard Avedon that puts her in the lineage of rock rebels of generations past. With a long ash dangling from her cigarette, a Bob Dylan T-shirt, and her jeans half unzipped, Cat Power “maybe doesn't give a shit about being in The New Yorker,” Brownstein thinks, “which I can't say is usually the vibe.” Avedon's image reminds Brownstein “to keep remembering … to keep going back to that place that feels sacred and special and uncynical.” Carrie Brownstein's Take on Richard Avedon's portrait of Cat Power appeared in the April 20, 2025, issue. Plus, audiences have been bemoaning the death of the romantic comedy for years, but the genre persists—albeit often in a different form from the screwballs of the nineteen-forties or the “chick flicks” of the eighties and nineties. On this episode from the Critics at Large podcast, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss their all-time favorite rom-coms and two new projects marketed as contemporary successors to the greats: Celine Song's “Materialists” and Lena Dunham's “Too Much.”

For the past 65 years I have been in an ongoing dialogue with my childhood friend, Howard (aka Howie) Brownstein. Howie used to work as a delivery driver for Mama's Pizzeria, which many of you know as the place I revere as cheesesteak heaven. When he couldn't work his shifts he would ask me to fill in for him and the inter-weaving aromas of Mama's super-cheesy pizzas and juicy cheesesteaks (both of which relying on Mama's secret 3-cheese blend)  embedded a powerful taste and olfactory memory, associated specifically with Mama's, that has forever driven my never-ending quest for the perfect pizza. In the meantime, Howard became an internationally successful expert in something called "turnaround and crisis management." For the past forty years, he has regaled me with stories of his adventures interceding for companies (and their families) for whom he is often their last hope before they lose everything. His "turnaround" journey is not unlike my own adventures with pizza (except that turnaround intervention pays much better) and it also serves as another ideal metaphor for the journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the overcoming of adversity, as you will hear in this engaging conversation with the best "fixer" I know. This episode examines what went wrong in 2024 and how Democrats can win back the House, Senate, and White House after Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election. Our guest is one of the smartest political writers in the country. Ron Brownstein is a CNN Senior Political Analyst, and Senior Editor at Atlantic Magazine. He analyzes the factors behind Trump's win, including dissatisfaction with the economy under the Biden administration and Trump's ability to appeal to some pro-choice and economically dissatisfied voters. Brownstein suggests that Democrats will need to focus on issues like cost of living and portraying Republicans as helping the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. He also predicts that the next Democratic nominee will likely take a more centrist tone to neutralize Republican arguments on cultural issues. Overall, Brownstein sees the 2026 midterms as a strong opportunity for Democrats to regain control of Congress but notes the 2028 presidential election will present a greater challenge.Today's Bill Press Pod is supported by The American Federation of Teachers. With two weeks to go, the presidential race couldn't be closer. But if Kamala Harris is to win, how exactly would that happen?  Veteran journalist Ron Brownstein has a new piece in The Atlantic laying out what Harris's path to victory looks like. The short version: She has to run up massive margins in cities and affluent suburbs, while limiting Trump's gains among nonwhite and working class white voters. That may sound unsurprising. But the details on how this might unfold are complicated, fraught with uncertainties, and actually plausible, if very difficult. So we invited Brownstein on the show to demystify all of it.
