Yes, we have THE Mike Allred: father of Madman, creator of Doop, iZombie, and so many others, artist extraordinaire, and lover of comic books! If you didn't know, Mike started out in broadcasting, first on the radio and then as a TV reporter in Europe. But soon he's back in his native Oregon, chewing up the independent comics scene with graphic novels like Dead Air, Graphique Musique, and Grafik Muzik, as well as contributions to Creatures of the Id. One of those stories featured Frank Einstein, who Mike would go on to mold into his iconic Madman character. After Madman-ing it for a decade, Mike made for Marvel next, where he collaborated with Peter Milligan on X-Force (later X-Statix), then Matt Fraction on FF, and Dan Slott on Silver Surfer. He even found time to create and launch iZombie, which was adapted in a TV series. Now, he's at DC, tackling the big boys in Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age (both with Mark Russell).Go back The Marvel Art of Michael Allred on Kickstarter here: http://kck.st/3YykYum. Batman is a loner. Except for Alfred, the Robins, the Batgirls, Signal, Batwoman and the Justice League. But before many of those characters, there was Ace the Bathound, the first of numerous Bat pets, mostly brought into the cave by Damian, another noted loner , and that club now includes Titus, Alfred the tuxedo cat and Batcow. Another noted dog lover is this week's Patreon backer, Dan Grote, who asked us for stories about Bat pets. So we're going into all ages territory for some Scooby Doo and Tiny Titans, and then reading what might be the most heart warming story Mark Russell ever wrote. A Dog-gone Crisis (Scooby-Doo Team-Up # 18 [Digital 35-36]) Aw Yeah, Pet Club! (Tiny Titans # 13,17,21,23,28,33) Hounded (Batman: Urban Legends # 11-16) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

To start, The Dark empty Void is out September 11 and it's your first horror, did you approach this any differently than you've done with previous projects? There's psychology in this series, how much research went into this, and do you tend to research a lot for your projects? It's obviously also about black holes, when you're crafting stories like this do you do research on other black hole tales? Do you ever wake up and go “that's a great idea… has someone possibly already done it?”Shifting gears to Midnight Shadows, a story in collaboration with The Midnight band, themes in this work include escapism and nostalgia, what did the first outline of this look like? Tell us about your collaboration process with the band.Did you find yourself listening to the music when scripting?Did you ever find yourself writing and a song would come on, then suddenly you'd have to change gears in the story? The art team is incredible (Stephen Thompson, Jahnoy Lindsay, Elisabetta D'Amico) with clear 80s inspirations, anything in the book that blew your expectations away?Do you see this OGN as a standalone story, or something that could continue?Anything else you'd like to plug today?

On episode 17 of Matt and Mike Read Comics we read Cereal from Ahoy comics. It's a perfectly satirical blend of What We Do In the Shadows, Monster Squad, and of course breakfast cereal. This book is hilarious in many ways while still telling a captivating and coherent story about war and love. And also cereal. Breakfast is Matt's favorite meal of the day and Mike loves his breakfast cereal so this book was a match made in heaven. Written by Mark Russell and illustrated by Peter Snjeberg, this book is a must read.

Jace and Rocky have a quick chat about the recent Phoenix Fan Fusion Convention and then dive into the DC Comics titles for the week of May 28, 2024. Primer continues to be everything you want in a comic for new and veteran readers of all ages. The Penguin has succeeded in elevating its titular character to new heights in terms of his threat level in Gotham City. Speaking of Gotham, Mark Russell's alternate universe take on Batman in the Dark Age title feels both fresh and classic, with art to match. Finally the DC Pride anthology has some great stories and some others that don't resonate with the guys as much, but the emotional vulnerability, maturity and self-awareness Phil Jimenez brings to his autobiographical story is powerfully touching to say the least.

Jace chats with Eisner, GLAAD and Ringo award-winning comic book writer Mark Russell about the Kickstarter campaign for his Eisner-nominated series TRAVELING TO MARS. This is your chance to get a beautiful hardcover edition of this incredible story that Mark describes as some of his best work ever. TRAVELING TO MARS tells the story of former pet store manager Roy Livingston, the first human to ever set foot on Mars. Roy was chosen for the unlikely mission for one simple reason: he is terminally ill and has no expectation of returning. Roy is joined on his mission by Leopold and Albert, two Mars rovers equipped with artificial intelligence, who look upon the dying pet store manager as a sort of God. Against the backdrop of not only his waning days but those of human civilization as well, Roy has ample time to think about where things went wrong for both and what it means to be a dying god. A riveting story of planetary exploration and of finding meaning in your final days. An incredible balance of emotion and relatability in the story lead to a profound sense of connection for the reader and fan reaction has shown that to be true. Presented in the format Mark loves best, this is a story that will have you thinking about it long after its over. Plus, if you are anything like Jace, it will be a story you can't wait to share with friends. Listen in on our chat with Mark for all the details.
