To close out the week, we end it on a high note about comedy mastermind Lenny Bruce! Topics Discussed Include: *How Lenny inspires an imitable art form until it wore off/became bland again in late 70s/early 80s *Outrage in today's post-Tik Tok world *Comparisons to other liability risk inducing comedians like Jonathan Winters *Derivative comedians who refuse to be dangerous or clever thanks to hacks like Joe Rogan *Sam Kenison, Andrew Dice Clay, Hannah Gadsby, Dennis Miller, Dave Chappelle, Craig Ferguson & satirist Mark Russell contrasts as well as how many other comedians raised the stakes *The First Family with Vaughn Meader diss backfiring *How Lenny wasn't good at planning his next move inbetween arrests, cartoons, other common cases related to censorship vs. freedom of speech *And how there has yet to be an impressive reenactment/depiction of Lenny on-screen. Yes, we have THE Mike Allred: father of Madman, creator of Doop, iZombie, and so many others, artist extraordinaire, and lover of comic books! If you didn't know, Mike started out in broadcasting, first on the radio and then as a TV reporter in Europe. But soon he's back in his native Oregon, chewing up the independent comics scene with graphic novels like Dead Air, Graphique Musique, and Grafik Muzik, as well as contributions to Creatures of the Id. One of those stories featured Frank Einstein, who Mike would go on to mold into his iconic Madman character. After Madman-ing it for a decade, Mike made for Marvel next, where he collaborated with Peter Milligan on X-Force (later X-Statix), then Matt Fraction on FF, and Dan Slott on Silver Surfer. He even found time to create and launch iZombie, which was adapted in a TV series. To start, this episode will air just a few days before Ultimates #1 comes out, how excited are you to see fan reactions? Can you talk a little bit about how you snagged the writing gig for Ultimates? By all accounts this seems like the most important book as far as worldbuilding is concerned. With a few scripts under your belt, is there a specific Ultimate/Avenger you enjoy writing the most? Were you a fan of the original Ultimates and the line at the time? The FCBD story you wrote gives us a lot of hints as to the whereabouts of heroes, I was curious, how much of those required Wil Moss to check as far as green lighting things, or do you have full reign to erase or delete a character from this timeline?Pie in the sky, is there a character that floats to the top you're excited to dig into, and if it's a spoiler, can you give a hint as to who they might be? 19:0020:26Juan Frigeri is no slouch when it comes to big superhero action, was there a panel or page he blew you away with, so far?I was a big fan of your Children of the Vault miniseries, which frankly had some mind bending ideas at work. Did writing that help you gear up for Ultimates in any way?Does the Ultimate Universe office have a slack going? Are you all digging into each others scripts and keeping tabs?At this point 20th Century Men is iconic in a lot of ways, for fans of Ultimates, why should they check it out?
Jace and Rocky have a quick chat about the recent Phoenix Fan Fusion Convention and then dive into the DC Comics titles for the week of May 28, 2024. Primer continues to be everything you want in a comic for new and veteran readers of all ages. The Penguin has succeeded in elevating its titular character to new heights in terms of his threat level in Gotham City. Speaking of Gotham, Mark Russell's alternate universe take on Batman in the Dark Age title feels both fresh and classic, with art to match. Finally the DC Pride anthology has some great stories and some others that don't resonate with the guys as much, but the emotional vulnerability, maturity and self-awareness Phil Jimenez brings to his autobiographical story is powerfully touching to say the least.
Four books are out this week, including the return of a character from the Bounty Hunters series in Jango Fett #3, while The High Republic features a double dose of stories -- Saber for Hire #2 and The High Republic Adventures #6 -- and Darth Maul contends with another Palpatine-decreed threat (or is it?) in Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2.Comics Discussed This Week:Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2 (of 4) (6:31)Jango Fett #3 (of 4) (17:38)Saber for Hire #2 (of 4) (34:17)The High Republic Adventures Phase III #6 (52:57)Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Star Wars (Vol. 3) #43The High Republic Phase III #4 and 5News: The TPBs for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hyperspace Stories, Vol. 3 and The High Republic Phase III Vol. are all due out June 11.Traversing the Stars has an interview with writer Ethan Sacks about the Jango Fett mini-series and more.August solicits from Marvel reveal a light month, with no reveal of The Acolyte one-shot or the expected Doctor Aphra outing. Jace chats with Eisner, GLAAD and Ringo award-winning comic book writer Mark Russell about the Kickstarter campaign for his Eisner-nominated series TRAVELING TO MARS. This is your chance to get a beautiful hardcover edition of this incredible story that Mark describes as some of his best work ever. TRAVELING TO MARS tells the story of former pet store manager Roy Livingston, the first human to ever set foot on Mars. Roy was chosen for the unlikely mission for one simple reason: he is terminally ill and has no expectation of returning. Roy is joined on his mission by Leopold and Albert, two Mars rovers equipped with artificial intelligence, who look upon the dying pet store manager as a sort of God. Against the backdrop of not only his waning days but those of human civilization as well, Roy has ample time to think about where things went wrong for both and what it means to be a dying god. A riveting story of planetary exploration and of finding meaning in your final days. An incredible balance of emotion and relatability in the story lead to a profound sense of connection for the reader and fan reaction has shown that to be true. Presented in the format Mark loves best, this is a story that will have you thinking about it long after its over. Plus, if you are anything like Jace, it will be a story you can't wait to share with friends. Listen in on our chat with Mark for all the details.
The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
The CEO of the Children's Society, Mark Russell, talks about the new children's support hub they're launching in London, UK in July 2024, their 140-year history, ambitions for the future and creating an evidence base to roll out a nation-wide network of support hubs. We celebrate the £1M grant from BBC Children in Need just announced on 15th May to support the Children's Society's work tackling mental health. We also look at key issues affecting children, such as online grooming, poverty, exploitation, county lines, mental health, domestic abuse and more. The Children's Society also drives forward advocacy campaigns, formulates policy positions and aims to achieve systemic change. They have around 800 staff, 6,000 volunteers and 140,000 supporters who are part of their movement.
