It's banned books week, as we continue our look at books that have been challenged or banned. This week, it's Gennifer Choldenko's tale “Al Capone Does My Shirts.” Back in 2016, the book was challenged by a group that said the book “perpetuates negative stereotypes” by including Al Capone as a character in the book. And earlier this year, a school board member in Pennsylvania called for a ban on the Newbery Honor book because a character called an autistic teenager stupid. The school says the books are selected by professional staff members to support the district's educataional goals and meet the learning needs of students. The writer dedicated the book to her sister who had severe autism and was the inspiration for the character. What do you think? Give a listen to our discussion of Jennifer Cheldenko's “Al Capone Does My Shirts.” It was a rainy, muddy, fabulous day at the Gaithersburg Book Festival where this group of middle school students from Maryland discussed whether they'd like living on Alcatraz and if it's better to be the oldest or youngest in the family. Gennifer Choldenko answers their questions about researching her book AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS. NPR newscaster Jack Speer is celebrity reader. Past Book Club for Kids guests drop by as well. Kitty Felde is host.

Master of Puppets. In this episode, we continue our exploration of the Bondage of the Will, with Gerhard Forde's book, The Captivation of the Will. We discuss the human will — what it is, what it does, what it wants — and why we are compelled to insist that we have free choice. We also talk about the two paths: one, the path of forgiveness, and the other, the way of morality. Why do we default to morality in matters of choice, and why is the preaching of God's grace over against morality so offensive to Christians who confess that our knowledge of good and bad is a direct consequence of the original sin in the garden? We also talk about drunkenness, women's ordination, the offense of irresistible grace, and what the Holy Spirit is up to amidst the disruption that occurs when he sends his preachers to declare an end to the illusion of free choice and reveal his death sentence to bound wills. Do You Understand the Words That Are Coming Out of My Mouth? In this episode, we read Gerhard Forde's monograph on Luther's treatise on The Bondage of the Will. We discuss scriptural exegesis, its internal and external clarity, how modern readers interpret texts, and why we often misread the Bible, as well as why we frequently fail to understand biblical texts that are overt and explicit in their clarity. This, and a conversation about Erasmus's word study method, Luther's assertions, living words, and the vibrating, dangerous energy of Scripture. SHOW NOTES: The Captivation of the Will: Luther Vs. Dazed & Confused. In this episode, we continue our series on The Bondage of the Will (1525), by Martin Luther. We read Dr. James Nestingen's historical introduction to the treatise and delve into the ways two theologians differed in their exegesis of Scripture, their interpretation of Christian doctrine, and the early and medieval church-theological traditions that influenced Erasmus and Luther as they engaged in a back-and-forth. Send us a textToday we're wrapping up our deep dive videos for our newest miniseries covering the Anne of Green Gables 8-book collection by L.M. Montgomery. Anne is now a mother of six, navigating a reality in which herself, her husband, and all of her children exist in World War One Canada. What does this mean for the country, the world, and more specifically, the Blythe family and the small community they live in? We're here to give you the “411” on these lesser-read books in this series, and answer the question of whether or not they're worth the read.In this episode we dive into books seven and eight: Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside - we've moved past the well-known perspective of Anne Shirley and are now seeing the world through the eyes of her children, and more specifically, her youngest daughter Rilla. What do we think about the differences, and how do we currently feel about the focus slowly shifting away from Anne and predominantly onto her daughter? Who were our favorite and least favorite characters and plot points? Do we think these books carry on the feminist legacy of the more popular installations, and how did we feel about reading a “war book?”Check out our kickoff episode all about what the Bildungsroman is, why women and girl's stories are so important for everyone to read, and how Montgomery expertly uses this book series to critique social and political issues of the early 1900's, with an emphasis on women's roles in society. We also provide a bit of context by discussing Montgomery's life, and the political climate in Canada when this story takes place. Coming of age tales can be so much more than simple children's books. We're here to discover why! Listen on for our reviews of the final books: seven and eight, our deep dive reactions, and important things we learned about history because of this book. Like where daylight savings time comes from, where the draft is legal, and why several pages of Rilla of Ingleside were redacted until 2010.And stick around for next week - the final Anne episode where we rank the books and all of the 1980's movie adaptations! In this episode, we begin our series commemorating the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's treatise, de Servo Arbitrio — The Bondage of the Will. We begin by reading Dr. Steven Paulson's theological analysis of what's at stake in Luther's treatise, as well as its sharp-edged consequences for churches today. As it was received then, so it is now by dedicated students of this work: it cleaves those who seek Jesus plus philosophy, ideology, or personal interests from those who insist on Christ alone in all things relating to matters of salvation, faith, etc. SHOW NOTES: The Captivation of the Will: Luther Vs. In this episode, we read the first Inkling, Owen Barfield, as he defends the use of old words, old stories, and old ways of expressing what's good, beautiful, and true against modern proponents that argued for more modern “scientific” ways of judging language, esp., poetics and myth, as well as religion and culture. Join the conversation by letting us know what you think about the episode! As we say in this episode, once you read Tiffany D. Jackson's Monday's Not Coming it stays with you. And maybe it should. After all, isn't that what art is supposed to do - change you, provoke you, make you think? And isn't that one of the reasons why certain books are banned? Fight against the bans. Read the books that are banned. Discuss them. Think about them. Let them change you. Let them effect you. Your growth depends on it. Some might argue that democracy also depends on it. She has been teaching for 15 years. Harshaw is very passionate about the arts and education. She has mostly taught ART I, II, and III, Drawing I & II, Applied Art, and Art Appreciation for the Little Rock School District. She has served as an Art Facilitator for the Timmons Arts Foundation, Say It Loud! Readers and Writers, and various churches around the cities of Little Rock and North Little Rock. She has been a club sponsor and co-sponsor for several art and social justice clubs at each school she has worked. She has shown her dedication to the arts, on the district and state level, by leading professional developments, serving on the Artistry in the Rock Committee, and developing the first Middle School Portfolio Day.As an Art Educator, Harshaw has chosen Art Literacy, telling and creating stories through art, as her primary mission. Her first body of art, as an emerging artist, focuses on banned book authors and is entitled “The Banned Book Series”. In this 25 piece series, she highlights authors of various ages, genres, and genders. Her professional debut was at the “Conversations with Artist Frank Frazier” as a visiting artist in December 2024. Her artwork is currently a part of the “HerSTORY & Beyond” exhibit at the Spellman Museum of Forney History in Forney, TX and the “In Search of Myself” exhibit at the ArtsXchange in East Point, GA. She will be a guest on The Finesse Media Podcast in April, 2025, where she will discuss the importance of Art Literacy. Loni Harshaw's most recent body of work is dedicated to musicians and the stories they tell. The purpose of this body of work is to spark a dialogue about each musical artist and the relevance of them being showcased together. She wants the viewers to search the musicians, listen to their music, and see how the generations have influenced the others. So often we forget about the foundation of different genres of music and how all of them are truly connected; this body of art is meant to ignite that forgotten curiosity about music, its origins, and its original story.
A novel about a fictional school shooting, which captures the perspectives of all involved. A memoir which begins with a young person's complicated journey questioning their sexual identity. And a novella detailing a year in the life of a young Latina living in Chicago as she approaches adolescence. In many cities and states, these storylines are at the heart of best-selling, critically acclaimed books that are no longer available in local schools or public libraries, because they've been banned. In this special edition of “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club,” we're showcasing three authors who have written about subject matter targeted by organized book-banning campaigns. This episode is also part of Unbound Pages, our year-long series examining the anti-book-banning movement in America.
Got A Machine Head. In this episode, we read J.R.R. Ever since the Nazi Party began burning books, German writers exiled for their opinions or heritage have been taking up residence in Paris. There they opened a library meant to celebrate the freedom of ideas and gathered every book on the banned list . . . and even incognito versions of the forbidden books that were smuggled back into Germany. For the last six years, Corinne Bastien has been reading those books and making that library a second home. But when the German army takes possession of Paris, she loses access to the library and all the secrets she'd hidden there. Secrets the Allies will need if they have any hope of liberating the city she calls home.Christian Bauer may be German, but he never wanted anything to do with the Nazi Party―he is a professor, one who's done his best to protect his family as well as the books that were a threat to Nazi ideals. But when Goebbels sends him to Paris to handle the “relocation” of France's libraries, he's forced into an army uniform and given a rank he doesn't want. In Paris, he tries to protect whoever and whatever he can from the madness of the Party and preserve the ideas that Germans will need again when that madness is over, and maybe find a lost piece of his heart.Stand-alone historical fiction from a bestselling, Christy Award-winning authorA thought-provoking novel perfect for book clubsIncludes discussion questionsGet The Collector of Banned Books by Roseanna M. What's really showing up in your child's classroom? In this episode, I sit down with Gary VanRiper—author of The Adirondack Kids book series—to talk about the subtle (and not-so-subtle) messages woven into modern elementary school books and curriculum. As a parent, you must be informed and involved. Gary brings insight not only as a writer but also as someone who deeply cares about truth and shaping the next generation. We talk about the importance of wholesome stories, how to spot red flags in what your kids are reading, and why it's critical that parents and grandparents take responsibility for discipleship—starting in the home. This is an eye-opening episode for anyone who wants to raise kids with discernment in a culture pushing confusing and harmful ideologies. Don't miss it. Join the conversation by letting us know what you think about the episode! The next installment of our Banned Books Series is Maus by Art Spiegelman, a graphic novel in two volumes depicting Art Spiegelman talking to his father, Vladek, about his experience as a Polish Jew before, during and after the Holocaust. Maus originally began as a strip in 1972 and was serialized from 1980 to 1991. Some have criticized the book for a number of reasons, including topic, style, and themes, but in 2022, a school board in McMinn County Schools in East Tennessee removed the book from school curriculum over concerns about profanity, nudity and violence.
