It's time for our final Banned Book Club of the year and we're going out with a "classic": William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies and Peter Brook's 1963 adaptation. Thanks to listeners Natalie and Miriam for chiming in!This is Joe's first time reading the book, but it's so familiar because of its pop culture legacy. It's deeply colonial, though Brenna is frustrated by Golding's penchant for asking questions he doesn't want to explore.Plus: fatphobia and ableism for days, wanting more characterization, how the black and white affects the viewing experience, a trauma-filled shoot, and why Joe would rather watch The Wilds on Amazon!Wanna connect with the show? The newest installment tackles All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely. This is an important story about police brutality and its' effects on a community. It is told as 2 stories in one from the point of view of the victim, a black teenage boy, and the other from a witness, a white teenage boy that attends the same school as the victim. It is an important story, and Jason Reynolds voice is one that I will always say needs to be heard. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the very hot topic of banned books, especially given that “Banned Books Week 2022” took place just a couple weeks ago. For those who haven't heard of this week, the "mission" that prompted it is to celebrate freedom when it comes to reading and to ensure that people have unhindered access to information - no matter what that information is. While many would disagree with banning books in general, there are parents who want to protect their kids from certain books they are being given access to at inappropriate ages. So is it always a bad thing, or can it be an important cultural stand? Episode Links There are two podcasts related to this topic that would be worth going back to listen to. CCP17: On School Choice and CCP5: On the “Don't Say Gay” Bill both dive into parental rights in education and the need for parents to take an active role in this realm. Neil Postman wrote a book titled The Disappearance of Childhood that stresses the importance of sheltering our children from adult secrets, particularly sexual ones. Many of the books that parents are wishing to be banned from the schools fall into this category. You can find his book on Amazon HERE. One of the best ways to protect yourself from being susceptible to heretical beliefs is to have a solid, firm foundation in Christian Theology. We encourage you to check out the “Theology on Tap” course that just became available at churchandculture.org. This 15-video course covers everything from the doctrine of humanity to revelation to the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. And while some feel the need to engage with certain books for the purpose of being a student of culture, there are ways that you can work around this for content that is truly not worth filling your mind with. For more on this topic, you may be interested in checking out a series given by James Emery White at Mecklenburg Community Church called “Fifty Shades”. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.

Welcome back! This week the ladies reviewed "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno- Garcia. (Warning, this episode contains spoilers for the book.) In this book, a family of in-bread colonizers living in a mold laced haunted mushroom house in the Mexico City country side, try to hold main character Noemi, and her cousin, Catalina hostage in this creepy hellscape. The Doyle family, originally from England, planned to use the women's wombs as incubators. The goal?... An effort to diversify their incestuous gene pool, while simultaneously preserving the twisted patriarch's tainted bloodline in an effort to obtain immortality! Gross and weird! It's giving serious Lord Voldermort vibes!!! Of course Kat finds a way to slide in a Star Trek reference, and they also have a fundamental disagreement on what they would have done at the end of the book. We're back for another Banned Book discussion about Roald Dahl's The Witches (1963) which we've partnered with Nicolas Roeg's 1990 adaptation, as well as tangential conversation about Robert Zemeckis' 2020 film. Thanks to listener Miriam for contributing!Yes, this book was banned...for promoting witchcraft, not Dahl's anti-semitism, which we have to discuss . It's such a shame because the book - with its willingness to put children in danger and its "grim dark" ending - is still great (bonus points for Quentin Blake's illustrations). Then the film is all about Anjelica Houston's Grand High Witch, cute Jim Henson mice, Roeg's POV camerawork and great practical FX.Wanna connect with the show? This book contains a series of personal essays and reflections from Johnson's past that walk us through his journey growing up as a queer Black boy. Moni and Kat unpack the sometimes performative nature of gender and fquestion "why some people are willing to disown their own children solely based on their sexuality"?.. They also ponder whether their families would accept them if they were queer. After weaving through themes of virginity, consent, molestation, community, family and ultimately finding self acceptance, they end up right at the where they started.... In the words of the author "We are not as different as you think, and all of our stories matter and deserve to be celebrated and told". Here here!! On that note...sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Book Vs. Movie: The Adeventures of Captain Underpants The First Children's Book by Dav Pilkey Vs. the 2017 Movie The Margos end their Banned Book Month with a children's media empire, the Captain Underpants series, that has helped millions of kids who were not big fans of reading learn to love books. For some reason, this book and many of its sequels have been banned from libraries in America. In this episode, we try to dig into the popularity, the story behind Dav Pikley's creations, and why people across America are storming school library meetings to ban books. Dav Pilkey of Cleveland, Ohio, went to elementary school in the 1970s and was diagnosed with hyperactive disorder and dyslexia, making him want to avoid the constrictions of regular school life. He drew comic books, wrote stories, and was usually punished for not being able to sit still. Sitting at a desk alone in the school hallways, he created ‘Captain Underpants,” -a superhero who wore underwear and a cape because that is what most superheroes wear in action. In college, he wrote his first book World War Won, about the U.S./USSR arms scare, and won a national competition for student authors. In addition to Captain Underpants, the “Dragon Gets By” series, Dumb Bunnies, and Dog Man are among his many creations. The original Captain Underpants YA novel is about fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins of Piqua, Ohio. They are best friends who write stories and pull lots of pranks at Jerome Horowitz Elementary School. Their teachers and principal are the main antagonists in their daily life, and their adventures are a naughty delight. We are talking fart, poop jokes galore, and using a hypnotizing ring to make their Principal Benny Krupp turn into Captain Underpants. The movie produced by DreamWorks is directed by Nicholas Stoller and has an incredible cast of comedic actors to bring the story to life. It's a delight and was such a hit that Netflix has plenty of Captain Underpants content. So between the book and the film, which did we like better? In this ep, the Margos discuss:Dav Pilkey and how he created so many children's books that click with “tough readers.”Why is this book on the “banned” list so often? The themes of the book The cast: Kevin Hart (George Beard,) Thomas Middleditch (Harold Hutchins,) Ed Helms (Principal Krupp/Captain Underpants,) Nick Kroll (Professor Poopypants,) Jordan Peale (Melvin Sneedly,) Kristen Schaal (Edith,) Brian Posehn (Morty Fyde,) and Dee Dee Rescher as Ms. Tara Ribble.Clips used:The boys in the principal's officeCaptain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 2017 trailerMeet teacher PoopypantsThe principal gets hypnotizedThe boys try to figure out the teacher's name using Captain UnderpantsWeird Al Yankovic theme song Captain UnderpantsMusic: “Think” by Adam LambertBook Vs. Book Vs. Movie: The Giver The 1993 Classic 1993 Novel by Lios Lowry & the 2014 MovieThe Margos continue their “Banned Book Month” with The Giver by Lois Lowry, one of the most praised young adult novels of the 1990s that is also one of the most challenged books of the last 30+ years. Lowry based the story partly on her “army brat” upbringing with its strictness and her desire to honor life's journey throughout its ups and downs. We can forget that other people do not have that privilege by wanting to live in a world without pain. In the novel, our lead character, Jonas, lives in a Community where “sameness” is desired, and no one wants to stand out. Everyone has a role designed for them, and there is no music or dancing. Desire and wanting are considered “bad,” and at 12, you are given your “adult” career. Jonas is made a Receiver of Memory by an Elder and is training for the job when he learns that not perfect babies are “released” from the community and taken “Elsewhere.” Jonas learns his father does his job, which enrages him, making him want to leave. In the end, Jonas and “The Giver” decide to have him sneak away with baby Gabriel and try to find life on his own while saving the Community to learn to live with memories and emotions. Lois Lowry won the Newberry Award in 1994 and wrote several sequels to the story. (Jonas lives, by the way.) WHY IS IT BANNED IN SO MANY SCHOOLS????The film stars Jeff Bridges, who wanted direct it with his father, Lloyd Bridges, as the lead. When he died in 1998, the project went into turnaround. It was released by the Weinstein Company (BARF) in 2014.So between the book and the film, which did we like better? In this ep, the Margos discuss:Lois Lowry and her world of young adult fictionBanned Books and recent U.S. issues with this at schools across the nationThe themes of the book The main changes in the film adaptationThe cast: Jeff Bridges (The Giver,) Brenton Thwaites (Jonas,) Odeya Rush (Fiona,) Katie Holmes (Jonas' mother,) Meryl Streep The Chief Elder,) Alexander Skarsgard (Jonas' father,) Cameron Monaghan (Asher,) Taylor Swift (Rosemary,) Emma Tremblay (Lily), and Thabo Rametsi as Robbie.
