(2) Bob Zimmerman details the December 21, 1968, launch and the historic trans-lunar injection that sent humans toward another planet for the first time. Zimmerman describes the Saturn 5 ride as surprisingly smooth compared to Gemini rockets, despite the primitive onboard computers that required manual data entry of long number strings. He shares Jim Lovell's perspective of the Earth shrinking until the entire Atlantic could be covered by a thumb. Crucially, the discussion reveals that while the Space Race remained competitive, NASA was unaware that Soviet Zond failures had secretly forced the cancellation of their own manned mission.1939

It's our 100th episode! We have a bumper edition this week to celebrate with a somewhat eclectic triple feature (as is our wont). Mike White and Sammy join us to discuss Sisters (1972), directed by Brian De Palma, The Brother from Another Planet (1984), directed by John Sayles, and Twins of Evil (1971), directed by John Hough. A sadly still very relevant critique of intolerance and division in the USA wedged between two lurid but very different tales riffing on the horror of psychological duality - there's so much to discuss and we duly do just that in our longest episode to date. Never fear though - it's all killer, no filler! We manage to get deep into The Brother From Another Planet without really spoiling it, and although we do discuss the ending of Twins of Evil, plot is not really the point of most Hammer horror and this is no exception. We do, however, call out Spoiler Territory for Sisters. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:35:59 mark to avoid spoilers. Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos thinks the U.S. can grow its way out of a massive deficit. He says we need a “growth mindset.” Stephanie and Dave call it a “suicide economic model,” and note that growth addiction is exactly what afflicts most policymakers around the world. The dynamic duo discuss the little-understood fact that a shrinking economy can be healthy – when it accompanies a contracting population. Bezos also proposes that we plunder the universe in order to protect Earth “we've sent robotic probes to all of the planets in this solar system. This is the good one.”) Also: The Congressional Budget Office lowers U.S. population projections, further stoking the fires of depopulation panic – the result of a lack of overpopulation literacy Isaac Asimov's “metaphor of the bathroom,” about the need for more regulation as our population grows (we dug up great video of Asimov; see link below) The parable of the Mexican fisherman A great poem, Rather Than by Sandy Trust. While her previous research focused on early modern pamphlet about deathbed visions, she is currently working on contemporary spirituality with a focus on eco- and online-spirituality as well as youth culture.Cavan McLaughlin is a Senior Lecturer in Media Production at the University of the West of England (UWE), with research interests related to the role and function of occulture. Editor of the volume Trans- States: The Art of Crossing Over (2019), Cavan has also published on Crowley, esotericism and narrativity, open-source occultism, and contemporary occulture. Having recently defended a practice-based PhD entitled ‘Occultural Production as Re-Vision and Weird Worlding, they remain a practicing filmmaker, artist, and all-around creative media practitioner. As a media professional of over twenty years, Cavan has been involved in almost all aspects of audiovisual production, specializing in video art, music videos, and visual poetry. Cavan is the founder and Chair of Trans- States (trans-states.org); co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Monad: Journal of Occultural Studies (monadjournal.com); and, a trustee of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices (www.rensep.org). Cavan has a profound affection for cows, fungi, and rainbows. This is a discussion that I have wanted to have since the last ESSWE 9 Conference in 2023. In the session “Creativity and Occultural Production” I attended, Cavan and Sarah presented some very interesting papers. I also presented on another day about my research regarding tulpas and Otherkin, and as Cavan and Sarah's topics were in this general area as well, I thought to myself, how wonderful it would be if we could get together and talk about all of this in more detail. We each take turns talking a bit about our own projects, and from there, the discussion leads into sharing our insights and the interconnectivity of our individual research, and how underrepresented this is within academia. Some key concepts that came forward were: imagination, mind/consciousness, Cavan's term ‘alienated agency', power dynamics, new materialisms (inspired by Donna Haraway and Karen Barad), and serious play. We also discuss how other-than-human cultures overlap with neurodivergence and gender, as well as the importance of being ethically responsible (as researchers) and being cognizant of this very normal diversity in expression.   Theme Music and Editing: Daniel P.   Today on an all-new edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician/producer Jamie Perrett, son of singer/songwriter/musician Peter Perrett. Best known as a founding member of the U.K. punk band, The Only Ones, Peter has been a somewhat mythical figure in popular music for the last thirty plus years for reasons you will soon hear. Founded in 1976, The Only One's released three albums and their standing as one of the classic, first wave punk bands of the time is cemented with Peter's best known song, “Another Girl, Another Planet.” Called “One of Rock-N-Roll's great survivors,” in Mojo, Perrett's recently released solo album, The Cleansing is getting rave reviews for it's subject matter which The Guardian called a darkly humorous gem and a triumph. Our conversation with Jamie centered around his role as producer and facilitator of The Cleansing, as well as his new single “Glory Days,” which was released the day we spoke. We really dug into things with Jamie who was brutally honest and open about growing up in an unconventional and chaotic household. The stories you will hear Jamie tell are about as raw and frankly, difficult, as you have ever heard on this podcast. Somehow we also get to how Jamie discovered his own music, how making music with and touring with his father is really just a way to explore an unspoken love between them and what it was like growing up & recoding songs about his childhood which included abuse, neglect, fractured relationships and the complexities of growing up with broken promises. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Get ready to pick your jaws up off the floor.
