Pete Sieve, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the recently launched MEAL Magazine, is a man of many talents. Perhaps best known as a member of Rogue Valley with Chris Koza, Pete has dabbled in furniture and home design, along with a career in the food industry. A long-time food writer, Pete parlayed his love into creation of the new MEAL Magazine. A collaborative effort with a host of contributing writers, chefs, and artists, Pete and his team have elevated “magazine” to a true art form. Magazines should not be mere throw-away, disposable items, but endure as a cool coffee table book. One to be read years down the road, and still seem fresh and relevant. Creating and publishing a magazine is a bit of a throw-back these days - and not an easy one. We talk the hurdles along the way, but also the creative joy. Thank you, Pete, for sharing your story with us and for making such a creative contribution to our community!Learn more about MEAL Magazine here, available for purchase on-line and at select retailers.Sign up on Patreon to become a supporter. And, follow MEAL Magazine on Instagram._________________________Learn how the Andelin App helps preserve, prepare and share life’s most precious memories. Chris Koza (@chriskoza on Instagram) is a composer and performer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His music appears regularly on ABC’s General Hospital and 60 Minuets. His song (with his band Rogue Valley) The Wolves and the Ravens was featured in Ben Stiller’s film The secret Life of Walter Mitty and has become the soundtrack to the majority of my road trips across Europe with Sarah ever since we heard it. Be sure to check out his new album “Sleepwalkers part 1” and stick around to the end of the interview to listen to the debut of the title track in full here on the podcast. On the Wits podcast extra: Hail To the Chief(s)! Chieves? America celebrated its presidents this week. Wits celebrates those same presidents with a look back at the Commanders-in-Chief, Founding Fathers, and First Ladies that we have had on the show over the years. Or at least guests we made pretend that they were those people. And there have been a lot: James K. Polk, others. With special guests Andy Richter, Neil Gaiman, Paul F. Tompkins, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett, Paget Brewster, Joseph Scrimshaw, Josh Ritter, Chris Koza, Amy Sedaris, Eugene Mirman, Nellie McKay and Margaret Cho.
For the Season 2 finale episode of Composer Quest, I interviewed Chris Koza, who had the crazy idea to create four concept albums in one year, following the change in seasons. These Rogue Valley albums turned out to be a huge artistic success. One song even ended up in Ben Stiller’s personal collection, and subsequently The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Chris shares some songwriting tips and tricks, and we dig into the concepts behind his concept albums, like how he wrote a song for each of the 12 full moons.
Sam meets up with the Chris Koza at the Living Room on the Lower East Side, and then geocaches in the neighborhood with the whole band. On Geocachers we meet up with some of our favorite musicians, comedians, writers, and all-round entertainers to explore New York, one geocache at a time. Sometimes we start at a bar – although sometimes we don’t – and our adventures take us through parts of the neighborhoods you don’t usually get to see, while the conversation with the guests likewise leads you down unchartered territory: Paul Dempsey talks about physics; Nick Diamonds talks about baseball.
Listen as Josh Grier (Tapes 'n Tapes) coaches a rough housing class for criminals. Someone nearly beats Chris Koza to death with a bag of doorknobs, Jeremy Messersmith begrudgingly saves him, and Geoff Herbach proves how powerful his haunches are.
