Multi-talented musician and producer Josh Kaufman is known for his work with Josh Ritter, The National, and his band Bonny Light Horseman. I've known Josh for many years, after meeting him in Pittsburgh while he was on tour with Dawn Landes. I felt instant friendship with him (and honestly with the entire Dawn Landes band that day). We haven't seen each other very much over the last 15 years, but since he left that impression on me I've always rooted for him in his career. In our Basic Folk conversation, Josh shares anecdotes from his childhood, including memories of his journalist mother interviewing legendary musicians and the backstage snacks that left a lasting impression. He reflects on his early musical influences, the role of music in his family, and how his parents supported his passion for music from a young age. Then we dive into Josh's experiences playing in bands in New York City during his high school years and how those formative experiences shaped his relationship with music and the city itself. As a producer, Josh discusses his approach to working with artists, emphasizing the importance of capturing the raw, live energy of a performance. He talks about his instrumental album, 'What Do the People in Your Head Say to Each Other,' and how embracing imperfection has become a central theme in his work. He also touches on his collaborations with notable musicians, including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, and the impact of those experiences on his career. Josh Kaufman is the most sought out producer in roots music these days. Look out for him producing some great records in 2025 and beyond.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Josh Ritter is a successful and celebrated songwriter, and I feel convinced after my conversation with him that his songwriting is so good, in part, because he does not particularly care about being successful or celebrated. As he once wrote in “Snow is gone”, “I'm singing for the love of it / Have mercy on the man who sings to be adored”. I loved talking to him. REGARDING THE VIDEO VERSION OF THE SHOW: You'll notice that I've released this episode in both audio and video format. I assumed that it would not publish on podcatchers that don't support video, but it has. If you're using overcast (or a similar podcatcher) and would like the video version, just look for the show on YouTube, it's easiest to find the video there. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong speaks with legal analyst Josh Ritter to discuss the headline-dominating case of Rex Heuermann, the alleged Long Island Serial Killer. Authorities believe Heuermann is responsible for a string of murders that first came to light in 2010, after four bodies were found along Gilgo Beach in New York. After more than a decade of extensive investigation, Heuermann was finally arrested – and has since been implicated in at least two more murders. Pedal steel guitarist Rich Hinman joins me on the show today. Rich is a really creative player who has definitely spent a great deal of time with the classic steel guitar cannon, but has very much branched out and developed his own style and voice on the instrument. He has a great flair for improvisation, and his tone and touch are really of the highest calibre. Rich is currently a teacher at Berklee College in Boston in the guitar Department, but continues his work in the studio and on the road. He has had recurring stints with artists like Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris, Molly Tuttle, KD Lang, Tanya Tucker, St. Vincent, Josh Ritter and many more. His current project is an amazing band with guitarist Adam Levy. The two of them go way back, and it shows, as their interplay and group improvisations are really incredible. The band is called Rich Hinman Vs Adam Levy and they have a brand new album out called “Fan Favorites” that you should check out. Rich also put out a solo album recently that is more on the ambient side, but full of inspired playing and compositions as well called “Memorial”. Rich is really active on social media which is how I first ran into his playing, and he also has a cool Patreon thing going on with weekly steel guitar lessons, so check out what he's up to over in his world at richhinman.com and if you get a chance to see him and Adam Levy, who are out on tour as we speak, don't miss them. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong speaks with legal analyst Josh Ritter to discuss the polarizing trial of Karen Read, who stands accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police officer John O'Keefe, in January 2022. The case made its way into national headlines when both sides put forward two completely different theories of what happened to John. Prosecutors believe Karen killed him in a fit of rage – but the defense insists that she is the victim of a large-scale police cover-up. Candice and Josh discuss how the theories played out in court, why a mistrial was declared and what it could mean for the future of the case.Need more Killer Psyche? Barnstar!, Boston's premiere kinda bluegrass and definitely bombastic band, has released their new album Furious Kindness and we're #blessed to welcome Mark Erelli and Zachariah Hickman to the pod. Originally a fun side hustle and bluegrass vehicle for Zack, the group, which also includes Charlie Rose and Taylor and Jake Armerding, started very casually performing at the legendary local Cantab Lounge. Zack accurately likens the vibe of the place to a basement Star Wars Cantina full of bluegrass bands. In between their main gigs with performers like Josh Ritter and Lori McKenna and solo careers, Barnstar! has cultivated an explosive live performance filled with energy and emotional expression leaving concert attendees cheering and crying along. Included in their repertoire are some of the finest music covers including many that you'd never expect to see on a kind of bluegrass band album, like The Hold Steady, Patty Griffin, Elliott Smith and Elizabeth & The Catapult. We talk about what it's like to bring a cover song to the band to learn as well as co-writing with friends like Dinty Child and Chuck Prophet. We'd be remiss if we did not address the alien-like quality of Mark Erelli's singing voice and learn that it is because of his bestie Zack and Barnstar! that he can sing like this. Now he finds himself performing vocal warm-ups before hitting the stage with the guys. Not something he ever thought he'd do. All members of Barnstar! contribute and sing to the new album Furious Kindness, an album that just wants to shout in your face about how awesome you really are.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? In January 2023, California radiologist Dharmesh Patel intentionally drove his Tesla off a cliff with his wife and two children inside after suffering a “psychotic break” and extreme delusions. Miraculously, the entire family survived. When Patel recovered from his injuries, he was charged with three counts of attempted murder. Now, with the support of psychologists and Patel's own wife, he is being considered for a mental health diversion program rather than a criminal trial and prison time. In today's Headlines, Candice is joined by legal analyst Josh Ritter to take a closer look at what diversion programs are, and how the program could positively or negatively impact Patel's case. Candice and Josh weigh the pros and cons of using the judicial system to solve mental health problems.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
