The Big Sick is the real life telling of Kumail Nanjiani, a comedian who fell in love with his now wife Emily Gardner. Not only does this story include some culture clashes they experience in their relationship but the story ramps up when Kumail has to make a critical decision. Emily contracts a mysterious illness and Kumail has to give the hospital permission to put her in a medical induced coma. In come the feisty parents to question Kumail and his motives about their daughter. Zoe Kazan portrays Emily in a fun and playful way. Holly Hunter and Ray Ramono are brilliant as her parents. Director Michael Showalter recounts the path to Sundance history with The Big Sick. After working with comedian Kumail Nanjiani on his previous film, Showalter read the script Kumail and his wife Emily V. Gordon wrote about how their relationship overcame both cultural clashes and a mysterious illness, and knew he had to direct it. Encouraging honest and organic performances from his actors is a Showalter specialty, and the combination of a great script with brilliant improvisation made for on-screen magic. The film premiered at Sundance where it sold for a record-breaking number, and remains a culturally important film that asks what it means to be an American.

Kumail Nanjiani has come a long way since he's joined us over the years. He got his big break as an actor in 2014, when he starred on the hit show Silicon Valley. Kumail played Dinesh. Kumail's the star and co-creator of the Academy Award nominated movie The Big Sick. He's acted on TV shows like Portlandia and Veep, too. Ray also known as Jonah Ray Rodrigues is known as the most recent host of the revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000. He is a former host of The Nerdist Podcast and was the co-host of Comedy Central's The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail. In October 2012, Ray began hosting his own podcast Jonah Raydio featuring guests from various independent music scenes. Jonah has recently started the fun podcast Let Me Watch Your Movie With You, where he sits down with writers, directors, and actors to watch their films and  talk about their careers, creative process, and behind-the-scenes dirt.  It's part interview, part commentary track, and part riffing.
