On a frigid day in 1843, Amasa Sprague, a wealthy Yankee mill owner, left his mansion to check on his cattle. On the way, he was accosted and beaten beyond recognition, and his body was left facedown in the snow. What followed was a trial marked by judicial bias, witness perjury and societal bigotry that resulted in the conviction of twenty-nine-year-old Irish-Catholic John Gordon. He was sentenced to hang. Despite overwhelming evidence that the trial was flawed and newly discovered evidence that clearly exonerated him, an anti-Irish Catholic establishment refused him a new trial. On February 14, 1845, John Gordon became the last victim of capital punishment in Rhode Island. My guest is Paul F. Caranci, author of "The Hanging and Redemption of John Gordon: The True Story of Rhode Island's Last Execution." He walks us through the murder, investigation, trial and execution, and also shares some of the theories regarding who might have killed Amasa Sprague and why.
In this episode, Joe interviews Paul F. Daley, Ph.D., who worked with Sasha Shulgin in his lab for the last seven years of his life, helping him finish (and co-authoring) "The Shulgin Index, Volume One: Psychedelic Phenethylamines and Related Compounds." He is now the co-founder, Chief Science Officer, and Director of Analytical Science at the Alexander Shulgin Research Institute (ASRI), focusing on the discovery and development of novel psychedelic compounds. While Sasha was passionate about self-experimentation, the Institute is aiming for the next step for these drugs: FDA approval. He discusses: Meeting Sasha at the 2nd international conference on hallucinogenic mushrooms in Washington D.C. Bonding with Sasha while reviewing the autopsy of researcher Robert van den Bosch for possible foul play The two compounds ASRI is closest to being able to test in clinical trials The 5-HT2B receptor, risk of valvular disease, and why we will likely be hearing more about this going forward How AI and new technology can lead to better safety science and more! The contemporary world is beset with a wide variety of conflicts, all of which have features without historical precedent. While most accounts of peacekeeping focus on attempts to limit violent conflict, this traditional view hardly captures the variety of challenges that today's peacekeepers face. Peacekeepers are now thrust into the unconventional roles of monitoring elections, facilitating transitions to the rule of law, distributing humanitarian aid, and resolving conflicts in civil societies that are undergoing transformation. This is the context for understanding the activities of modern-day peacekeepers. In When Peacekeeping Missions Collide: Balancing Multiple Roles in Peace Operations (Oxford University Press, 2023), Dr. Paul F. Diehl, Dr. Daniel Druckman, and Dr. Grace B. Mueller provide an original and comprehensive assessment on how different peacekeeping missions intersect with one another in contemporary conflicts. They begin by documenting the patterns of peacekeeping missions in 70 UN operations, noting the dramatic increase in number and diversity of operations since the end of the Cold War as well as the shift to conflicts with a substantial internal conflict component. They then turn to the overarching question of the book: how do individual peacekeeping missions impact the outcomes of other missions within the same operations? To answer this, the authors have developed a novel dataset of UN peace operations from 1946-2016 to assess mission compatibility. Moreover, the authors utilise five detailed case studies of UN peacekeeping operations featuring mission interdependence and then measure the results against their theoretical expectations. Ultimately, the model they have developed for analysing the effectiveness of the far more complex peace operations of today--relative to the simpler operations of the past--is essential reading for scholars of peacekeeping and conflict management. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Use cool words like a teenager & temporal prepositions: im, am, um. Paul is at Fritz's apartment. He finds a letter from his landlord and a garage door opener with a broken sticker. He recognizes that it belongs to Fritz. The opener works, but the garage door won't open. The door may be broken. Suddenly strangers from Fritz's apartment talk to him through the window: They're renting his apartment temporarily. Fritz has gone surfing. But they don't know where. Where is Fritz? Where are the surf spots in the area? What's up with the garage door opener? Biblical and historical evidence shows that although we do not know for certain who the author of Hebrews is, Paul is most likely the author.

Hope everyone is well out there and you are finding the time to do the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. I'm happy to say that I recently did so by flying over to Europe to attend this year's Suncebeat '22 festival in the beautiful Tisno, Croatia, followed by a trip back to the UK to visit family and friends. This month's mix is a celebration of the music and vibes from the week-long party. This is the first time I've appreciated the people and connections as much as the music. It's an older crowd so refreshingly there isn't the ego you get on a typical night out, just happy friendly people with amazing life stories. Loved catching up with friends old and new, missing you all already! The highlights for me were the excellent Deep Into Soul boat party with some of the UKs finest talent on display. The music they played really fired me up which I really needed. Another was Kenny Dope's kick-ass set at Barbarellas at 4am for two reasons. Firstly, the music was amazing, but I got to meet someone that has been listening to my mixes over the years and have chatted with online. We didn't recognise each other but were dancing near each other for over an hour! My friend got chatting to him and introduced me. He said he was Paul, I could hear he had a North American accent. I asked where he was from, he said "Canada". I asked if he was called "Paul F*" as I remembered talking to him a couple of months earlier online. That blew his mind!! He asked how I knew so I told him who I was - his reaction was priceless and something I'll never forget. We shared a BIG hug and took photos. It was a beautiful moment, a real connection with someone I have shared a virtual connection through our shared love of music. It's something I could never have imagined when all this began.I couldn't wait to do this show, it's the most excited I've been in a looong time. I loved mixing it live on Pressure and I'm so happy with the result. I hope you come to love it as much as I do.Finally a big shout to Andreas Hilden, who answered my cry for help and gave me some of my mixes that I have misplaced so I can restore the full c2eMusic collection on Podomatic.Credit and thanks to Ben Brophy for the cover picture and for allowing me to use. Please share the love and the music - let's make this world a better place one house mix at a time.Tracklisting,1: Horatio Luna - Patrice2: Nikitsch, Kuna Maze - Hey This Must Be Deep3: Black Sonix - Danny-s Jam (Sean's Inverted Dub)4: Caiiro - The Akan5: King Kooba - Slightly Burnt6: Neil Pierce - Rok Da Riddim7: Schmoov - Put Your Mind8: Dabous - Groundware9: Demarkus Lewis - Universal Language10: Grant Nelson - NineFour11: Emmaculate, Kaye Fox - Do It (Instrumental Mix)12: Demarkus Lewis - Too Many13: Ross Couch - Music Heals14: Nebraska - Aglio e Olio15: Danny Tenaglia - The Brooklyn Gypsy16: Emmaculate - Konga Madness17: Benny Maverick ft Dladla Mshunquisi & Spiritbanger - Memeza18: Col Lawton - Feel In Love19: CarlInTheHood - Feel The Heat (Zetbee Mix)20: Luxury - J.A.W.S21: Kink - Pocket Piano22: Mochakk - Da Fonk ft Joni23: Babs Presents - Jazz Night24: Moodymann - TributeEnjoy!
Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554): We continue today with the poignant story of England's “Nine Day Queen,” Lady Jane Grey. Although used as a political pawn by unscrupulous members of the aristocracy (including her own parents!), Jane maintained her ardent, radiant faith in Christ to the very end of her life, serving as an inspiration to the Protestant cause in England. We close this episode with another story sent in by one of our listeners, the incredible testimony of missionary Phyllis Sortor. You won't want to miss it! Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554): One of the most tragic figures in English history is Lady Jane Grey, the “Nine Day Queen of England” whose lineage and outspoken Protestant faith put her in the crosshairs of political intrigue around the throne. Today we will talk about Lady Jane's early life and how her faith in Jesus carried her through a turbulent and difficult childhood. We know you will find this brave young girl as fascinating as we do! Five Women of the English Reformation by Paul F.M. Zahl The Children of Henry VIII by Alison Weir
Anne Askew (1521-1546): Join us today as we continue with the story of Anne Askew, the fearless English noblewoman who was willing to endure persecution for the sake of the supremacy of God's Word and the Reformation cause. Though tortured and martyred for her beliefs, Anne's radiant testimony has lived on to inspire believers for generations. Five Women of the English Reformation by Paul F.M. Zahl The Queen and the Heretic: How Two Women Changed the Religion of England by Derek Wilson
Anne Askew (1521-1546): That's right, it's time for another woman from Tudor England! Today we discuss the life of Anne Askew, a bold, outspoken woman of the English nobility whose stand on the Scriptures and support for the Reformation put her in hot water with the “powers that be.” But before we get into her story, we start out with some “worthy mentions,” lesser known English women connected to Anne who also supported the Reformation. You'll be amazed at the diverse women who the Lord used at this critical point in English history! Five Women of the English Reformation by Paul F.M. Zahl The Queen and the Heretic: How Two Women Changed the Religion of England by Derek Wilson
Katherine Parr (1512-1548): Today we finish the story of Katherine Parr, Queen of England and sixth wife of Henry VIII. Like Queen Esther in the Bible, God raised up Katherine “for such a time as this” to protect and preserve the Reformation cause and the furtherance of the Gospel in England. We wrap up this episode with the rest of Lois Landis's wonderful story as told by one of our listeners, so be sure to join us! Five Women of the English Reformation by Paul F.M. This episode has everything: pangolin parties, problematic parents, Paul F. and Janie Haddad Tompkins. Hoja, Kiki, and Mohanad sit down with the comedy supercouple to discuss some of life’s biggest questions: What is a smell made of? Who gave Janie and Paul COVID? What do the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial and the January 6th Capitol attack have in common? (Hint: it’s poop.) Plus, the crew reacts to an apology from an I’m Sorry listener, and Hoja makes a gag-worthy revelation that leaves Paul on the verge of vomiting. It’s an episode not to be missed! Please note, I’m Sorry contains mature themes and may not be appropriate for all listeners. Follow Janie on Twitter @janiehaddad and on Instagram @lebaneselooker. Anne Boleyn (c. 1501-1536): Anne Boleyn may be one of the most well-known and controversial figures in English history! Yet the fact remains that she was one of the primary catalysts for King Henry VIII's Act of Supremacy, which inadvertently initiated the Protestant Reformation in England. Though not always recognized or appreciated, as Queen of England Anne took a brave stand for the Word of God and church reform in a volatile political and religious climate. She was more than just an enigmatic figure in English history–she is definitely a woman worth knowing! Five Women of the English Reformation by Paul F.M.
