What if the biggest threat to your strategy isn't a competitor, a budget cut, or AI?What if it's busyness? In this Sharp Cut, Marc Binkley and Vassilis Douros tackle one of marketing and leadership's biggest comfort blankets: the belief that activity equals progress.Drawing on the work of Roger Martin, Richard Rumelt, Michael Porter, Henry Mintzberg, and decades of research in strategy, psychology, and organizational behaviour, they explore why so many companies mistake plans, initiatives, and corporate buzzwords for actual strategy. The conversation unpacks:Why strategy is fundamentally a series of choicesHow organizations become trapped in the illusion of progressWhy indecision is often the most common strategic outcomeThe hidden cost of strategic ambiguityWhat B2B buying behaviour can teach us about leadershipWhy marketing departments produce more content than ever while achieving less impactHow AI accelerates both good strategy and bad strategyThree practical actions leaders can take immediately to make better strategic decisionsThis episode is ultimately about one uncomfortable truth:Most organizations don't have a strategy problem. They have a choice problem. And until they're willing to make difficult choices, strategy remains little more than activity wearing a strategy costume.TakeawaysMost strategies presented are often just lists of initiatives.Real strategy involves making explicit choices and trade-offs.Indecision can be a strategy, but it's not an effective one.Ambiguity can be useful short-term but harmful long-term.Fluffy language often indicates a lack of real strategy.Marketing and strategy should be aligned for effectiveness. The say-do gap reflects a disconnect in organizational goals.AI can exacerbate existing strategic issues if not managed properly.Effective strategy requires clear, actionable frameworks.Leaders must be willing to make specific, falsifiable choices.Chapters00:00 - The Illusion of Strategy03:13 - Defining Real Strategy05:49 - The Challenge of Decision-Making08:49 - Indecision as a Strategy11:59 - The Role of Ambiguity in Strategy14:50 - The Cost of Fluffy Language17:48 - Marketing and Strategy Alignment21:04 - The Say-Do Gap in Organizations23:52 - The Impact of AI on Strategy27:03 - Practical Steps for Effective StrategyReferencesCappellaro, G., Compagni, A., & Vaara, E. Under his leadership and the firm's founder-operator approach, Merritt Healthcare Advisors has rapidly grown to develop nearly four dozen healthcare facilities across the US, making it one of the top healthcare-focused investment banks in the nation. Zak's diverse background includes founding an edtech startup in college, experience in venture capital and private equity, and advising on complex healthcare transactions. In this episode… Healthcare isn't just changing, it's being quietly rebuilt from the inside out. As technology accelerates and costs climb, the question becomes harder to ignore: can the system evolve fast enough to keep up with the demands of an aging population? According to Zak Eisenberg, a seasoned healthcare dealmaker and advisor to physician-led businesses, the answer lies in shifting how and where care is delivered. He explains that rising costs and demographic pressures are pushing healthcare away from hospitals and toward more efficient outpatient settings, while also emphasizing prevention over treatment. From ambulatory surgery centers replacing costly hospital visits to a growing focus on population health, the system is being reengineered to do more with less. The result is a transformation that could redefine both patient outcomes and the economics of care for decades to come. In this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast, John Corcoran is joined by Zak Eisenberg, Partner at Merritt Healthcare Advisors, to discuss healthcare transformation and the disruptive power of AI. They explore demographic shifts driving demand, the rise of outpatient care models, and how AI is improving diagnostics and workflows. Zak also talks about navigating complex healthcare deals and managing long transaction timelines.

When he died in 2018 at the age of 99, the paper honored him with the headline, “Larry Eisenberg, 99, Dead; His Limericks Were Very Well Read.”He studied at City College of New York, where he earned bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics, and later continued at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, completing both a master's degree and a Ph.D. in electronics. With that kind of technical foundation, it's no surprise this story reflects the idea that writers often draw from what they know.Over the course of his career, he wrote about fifty short stories between 1962 and 1988. This was only his second published story, appearing in Amazing Stories in October 1963 on page 35, The Fastest Draw by Larry Eisenberg…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A discovery that could rewrite medicine instead threatens to erase the man who reaches for it first. Now one decision must be made—protect the truth, or bury it forever to preserve a lifetime of belief. The Sweeper of Loray by Robert Sheckley.

In this episode of Parenting Is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg revisits a favorite conversation with actor and comedian Ashley Austin Morris recorded while Morris was four months pregnant and still adjusting to the surreal reality of becoming a parent after never planning to be one. The two comics swap very specific pregnancy experiences from the perspective of performers who work nights, including the strange logistics of building a comedy career while anticipating sleep deprivation and childcare. Morris talks openly about miscarriages, including the emotional whiplash of feeling relief after one pregnancy ended because severe hormonal changes had left her sobbing on the floor and convinced she couldn't care for the baby. She explains how an unexpected catalyst—a chaotic rescue puppy whose needs sparked a new instinct to nurture—suddenly rewired her thinking about motherhood. The conversation also gets into the uncomfortable realities of pregnancy culture: genetic testing debates with an OB-GYN, the anxiety-producing medical environment of New York prenatal care, body changes that hit faster than expected, and the strange intimacy of discussing weight and cravings with strangers. Morris reflects on recovering from a long struggle with an eating disorder, including a surprising pandemic-era scholarship that allowed her to spend 80 days in a treatment program and ultimately find a different path to recovery. Throughout the conversation, the two comedians bring their storytelling instincts to the everyday details of pregnancy life—from Morris eating jars of pasta sauce with a spoon to Eisenberg's prenatal yoga class where everyone shared their cravings.

In this edition of EMS One-Stop, Rob Lawrence is joined by Bob Davies and Hilary Gates to explore the mission behind Six Minutes to Live, a growing movement focused on improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest. | MORE: ‘Six Minutes to Live': Mini-documentary spotlights cardiac arrest care crisis The conversation begins with the stark reality that every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces survival by 10%, and then widens into a larger discussion about injustice, geography and system performance. Bob reflects on his landmark USA Today investigation into EMS disparities across the country, while Hilary explains why this issue remains deeply personal and why communities, not just medical systems, must be part of the solution. The episode then turns from problem to action. Hilary and Bob describe how Six Minutes to Live is using storytelling, advocacy, community partnerships and public training to drive change, especially through bystander CPR education, school-based training and public access defibrillation. From Santa Cruz to the Resuscitation Academy in Seattle, the emphasis is on making the simple feel possible: hands-only CPR, early defibrillation and empowering ordinary people to act. The result is more than a nonprofit or a campaign. As Rob notes, this is a movement. Memorable quotes “For every minute that a person's heart has stopped, their chance of survival decreases by 10%.” — Hilary Gates “Life and death is defined by geography.” — Bob Davies “There are vulnerable, voiceless people living on the margins who need a voice.” — Hilary Gates “The main way that people save more lives is they care.” — Bob Davies “Every podcast that Hillary and I are involved with is actually sponsored by R&D. Rip off and duplicate, show up, take our stuff, go and save lives with it.” — Rob Lawrence Additional resources Six Minutes to Live Six Minutes to Live mini documentary Episode timeline 01:34-02:14 – Rob Lawrence introduces the episode and welcomes Hilary Gates and Bob Davies. 02:21-03:21 – Hilary Gates shares her background as an educator turned paramedic and cofounder of Six Minutes to Live. 03:48-08:14 – Bob Davies recounts his experience as a paramedic and journalist, including his USA Today investigation into EMS performance disparities. 08:24-10:50 – Rob asks what has changed in 20 years; Bob discusses the enduring formula, new technology and the energy of younger clinicians. 11:08-13:02 – Hilary explains why Six Minutes to Live was founded and frames cardiac arrest survival as an issue of injustice and community responsibility. 13:13-17:08 – Rob asks what Six Minutes to Live is and how it fits among other advocacy organizations; Bob and Hilary describe its role as a connector and storyteller. 18:04-18:39 – Rob resets the conversation and asks what the organization is doing now. 18:50-20:47 – Hilary describes the Santa Cruz partnership, community CPR training and support from donors and local agencies. 21:12-23:47 – Bob highlights their upcoming workshop at the Resuscitation Academy in Seattle and the power of systems that care enough to measure and improve. 24:00-25:20 – Rob offers a transatlantic explainer connecting Eisenberg, Utstein and UK ambulance response standards. 25:24-28:41 – Hilary discusses community myths about CPR and AEDs, and the need to simplify action for laypeople. 28:48-31:02 – Bob outlines what is next: documentaries, deep listening, connecting voices and helping movements grow organically. 31:17-33:01 – Rob and Hilary talk about creating local champions, liability concerns and getting communities to act. 33:13-34:47 – Rob asks the closing question; Hilary urges EMS clinicians to become local champions for simple lifesaving actions. 35:22-37:20 – Bob closes with a call for EMS professionals to confront the “little secrets” they know and act on them. Can Israel make the adjustments and double its GDP over ten years? Can Jews in the Diaspora help it get there?Israeli venture capitalist Michael Eisenberg joined SAPIR Editor-in-Chief Bret Stephens for a conversation about what it will take for Israel to become a trillion-dollar economy.Watch this SAPIR Conversation on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S4BQEQynhM Read Michael Eisenberg's essay: https://sapirjournal.org/money/2025/building-israels-trillion-dollar-economy/ Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/theo-gerard/monsieur-groove

Send us a textIn this episode of The Fixate & Binge Podcast, host Joe Curdy sits down with writer/director Zoë Eisenberg and starring actress Mitzi Akaha  to unpack their acclaimed 2024 indie film CHAPERONE -- a poignant, quietly powerful coming-of-age story set against the lush, time-suspended backdrop of Hawaiʻi.Drawing on his own experiences living in Hawaiʻi, Joe explores the film's deeply human themes from the film: arrested development, identity, the illusion of timelessness in Hawaiʻi and the inevitable drift into adulthood. Mitzi Akaha discusses her nuanced performance as Misha — a 29-year-old woman caught between youth and maturity — while Zoë Eisenberg reflects on crafting a narrative that examines age-gap dynamics, personal agency, and the consequences of refusing to grow up.The conversation delves into:The real Hawaiʻi that inspired the film's emotional toneWhat makes Misha both sympathetic and flawedHow the chemistry between Akaha and Laird Akeo shapes the storyWhy CHAPERONE resonates as a modern, culturally specific portrait of coming of ageWhat surprising, classic film inspired CHAPERONE the most!Thank you for listening! On this Saturday edition, Mike Pesca reaches into the archives for a 2016 classic with actor and author Jesse Eisenberg. They discuss Eisenberg's short story collection Bream Gives Me Hiccups and the "creek vs. crick" linguistic controversy it sparked, while analyzing why a nine-year-old restaurant critic is the perfect vessel for exposing adult hypocrisies. Eisenberg explains why he prefers writing dialogue to describing sunsets, reveals the existence of a spreadsheet tracking whether he or Paul Newman played a role better, and admits that his anthropology background is just an excuse for professional eavesdropping. Finally, the two perform the radio play "Marv Albert Is My Therapist". This conversation is a little heavier than most, but it's so important to talk about. I can honestly say I knew almost nothing about West Virginia before I came across these ladies, but I can't say that anymore. Julie Eisenberg and Babette Hogan are here to talk about their first documentary together that just debuted called Running for the Mountains. "This is about politics and keeping our water and air safe, requiring political action; and keeping West Virginia safe is of national importance. "Running for the Mountains" exposes some of the toxic structure that allows the polluting of our commons. Step up and into politics!" (Babette's words)I'm not going to try to describe the film; it's too complex (Babette said it in 1 sentence, but I didn't write it down), but I can say I honestly learned a ton about the WV lifestyle and people, and the direction the political climate has been heading, and it makes me both sad and scared - and also SO proud of those who are fighting. Babette and Julie have spent a good part of the last 15 years researching, following people and stories, and filming in WV, and they have seen a lot to have strong feelings about. I didn't finish the film the first time through- I literally turned my phone OFF because I got so mad. But I was expected to finish it, so I watched again. These ladies did a wonderful job of catching so many personalities and opinions through this film that you really feel protective of the people. And they need that, and deserve that. Super grateful for this education from Julie and Babette!   You can get all the info about, and get a link to watch Running for the Mountains here: https://www.runningforthemountains.com/Their Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/R4M2024/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)
