(To be read in a dramatic voice) No one would have believed... ... that a tale so vast- of death, alien destruction, heat rays, Phil Lynott, and the Moody Blues- could be told through orchestral prog rock, synths, and frying pans. Yet today, Frizz and Bob pop open Quest's End Paladin Whiskey & Ardbeg Uigedal Scotch to bring you PART ONE of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds- a British sci-fi marvel that, for decades, has been misunderstood and mostly unseen by the American eye. In this first chapter, we set the stage: The backstory. The architects of the sound. The players of this curious sonic war. The chances of you missing this are a million to one, they said. Yet, here you are. Next week... the invasion begins.
This week, we tackle the lofty, ambitious, sometimes bombastic topic of rock operas and concept albums. Most acknowledge that the rock opera was the outgrowth of the psychedelic era where, particularly in a post-Sgt. Pepper world, the rock n' roll album became an artistic statement. As musicians sought to expand and alter the fabric of pop music, “rock operas” with narratives, character development, and distinct movements were being explored on records like the Pretty Things' SF Sorrow (1968) and the Who's Tommy (1969). All rock operas are concept albums, but not all concept albums are rock operas. The concept album is a collection of songs that are tied together to present an overarching theme, going back as far as Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads, a 1940 collection of 78 rpm records that stayed true to the title. Joining us as our Third Lad for this discussion today is Dave Gebroe, the creator & host of the music obsessives' podcast Discograffiti. Dave dives into amazingly deep and immaculately researched discussions on the catalogues of a wide range of artists - if not with the artist themselves, then with a jaw-dropping roster of guests. Dave is also a filmmaker, writing, producing and directing the movies The Homeboy and Zombie Honeymoon. If that weren't enough, he's masterminded a 2 LP tribute to-slash-reimagining of Lou Reed's much maligned album Metal Machine Music, and I believe is working on a rock opera of his own. Oh, and you thought Gregg ruins everything? Just wait until he meets his match...Berlin! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Rocking out with... . Hebert Hoover? BELIEVE IT. By Pat Strait A Herbert Hoover concept album? About a Herbert Hoover audio drama? I have a few thoughts: 1) Is there any medium that CAN'T be conquered by Will “the Hoover Maniac” Anderson? 2) Why aren't there concept albums anymore? 3) In an age where it feels like everything creative has been done before, this is totally fun, unique and really, really cool. Growing excitement for the World Series reaches fever pitch as ticket prices soar. Also, Olivia Munn joins us to discuss her breast cancer journey, a new project for breast cancer awareness, and life with her new baby. Plus, Lin-Manuel Miranda talks about his new concept album Warriors, a project he describes as a movie told through music.
Collaborators Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis join us to discuss their new project, the concept album Warriors. It's a multi-genre musical adaptation of the 1979 movie "The Warriors," which tells the story of a Coney Island gang who need to fight their way back to Brooklyn after they are framed for a murder in the Bronx.
Since the blockbuster success of his musical “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda has been busy: acting, directing, and composing for Disney projects, including the upcoming movie “Mufasa: The Lion King.” But his new project is more personal, and a throwback in the best sense. Working with the playwright Eisa Davis, he has reimagined a movie from his childhood as a concept album. “The Warriors” is a cult classic released in 1979. “The Warriors are a gang from Coney Island, and they have to fight their way from the Bronx all the way back down to Coney Island in the course of the film,” Miranda tells David Remnick. The film reads as a nineteen-seventies period piece, but Miranda and Davis find a classical dimension to it. “The tale is an old tale. Sol Yurick, who wrote the novel the movie is based on, based it on the Anabasis, which is a soldier's account of trying to get back home from war” in ancient Greece. “It's this mythic story. . . . It doesn't get more clear than that as a plotline.” To tell that story in song and rap, Miranda brought together a cast of legends including Lauryn Hill, Nas, Marc Anthony, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, and more. If releasing a concept album, meant to be listened to straight through, seems like a stretch for 2024 audiences, Miranda is unfazed. “What's interesting about “Hamilton” is that no one I talked to thought it was a good idea when I was writing it. But I could see it. And it was the idea that wouldn't leave me alone.”

Blag Dahlia has been a force in the punk rock scene for nearly four decades, starting with his 1985 band The Suburban Nightmare, which soon evolved into The Dwarves. Despite never achieving massive commercial success, The Dwarves have left an indelible mark on both hardcore and punk. They've always eschewed mainstream conventions, forgoing major label support in favor of raw, unfiltered expression. As such, they're live shows, notorious for their intensity and unpredictability. The Dwarves have a new album out titled Concept Album.

Have you ever debated whether The Beatles' legendary album 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' could be considered a 'concept album'? The McCartney In Goal team debate this often asked question. Plus, Brett shares a fascinating familial connection to a World War II veteran that may well have inspired the album's title (spoiler alert: it didn't). He co-wrote one of his songs, Melt, with his long-time friend, Nicolas Cage. Phil was born and raised in Philadelphia, and attended Berklee College of Music as a guitar major. It was around then he first took an interest in songwriting. He moved to LA in 1981 and almost immediately got signed to Warner Brothers records with his band Carrera.
