We are back in Australia where we meet Claire Ashman who survived not one, but TWO cults. Her constant questioning and listening to her gut helped her raise her family until she was able to find the strength to leave her restrictive upbringing behind.
You know those days when you're just in the suck? When the only thing that reminds you that it might be OK, is that there are others that have had it a lot worse than you, and they made it?Well, kind listeners, today's episode might be exactly what you need if it's been one of those days. Claire Ashman is an author and four-time TED Talk speaker, and she is also the survivor of not ONE but TWO religious cults. The first during her upbringing, the second during her marriage. Claire has become an outspoken advocate and women's mentor, and as of 2019, she is a university student pursuing a path that many adults in her situation might never have the guts to take. Oh, and here's the real kicker - these cults she found herself in rooted themselves in Catholic faith traditions. So, needless to say, the conversation this week gets fairly existential, but I don't think it ever strays from the path of necessary, if not rough, dialogue. From learning how to use a phone, to what she should pay for housing for her and her 8 children, Claire has overcome more than most of us will ever be faced with in our lifetimes. And instead of hiding it, she has decided to share her story with full candor. Her memoir is entitled, “Lessons from a Cult Survivor,” and she has gone on to be featured and interviewed by multiple outlets in her native country of Australia and around the world. So imagine my surprise when she agreed to come on the show. I hope you enjoy the show.
Claire Ashman spent the first 36 years of her life in two very different but strict religious movements. Though the later group was a little more sinister. It was revealed that the leader of that group had been jailed for paedophilia, abusing his power and molesting young teenage girls.
#Cult #psychology #DoomsdayCult In today’s episode Dr. Becky speaks with Claire Ashman, a Doomsday cult survivor, who was forced to join the cult in New South Wales, Australia by her ex-husband. Claire spent 8 years as part of the cult with her 8 children and husband and left the cult to begin her the new chapter of her life 13 years ago. Claire took her first steps to leave the cult by attending church outside of the Doomsday community with her children, she then wrote letters to the cult leader challenging his authority, due to these steps Claire then received an eviction notice from the cult giving Claire and her family 12 days to leave. Claire was relieved she was able to escape the community however her husband wanted to stay but they were forced to leave as a family. This is Claire’s story where she discusses what she experienced and what her life looks like now. It is not a therapy session; however, it does cover the Psychological impact of what Claire experienced. Some people may find the content of this interview distressing. Dr. Becky Spelman is a top Psychologist in London, Becky is the Clinic Director for Private Therapy Clinic which has clinic's based all around central London including; Harley Street, Wigmore Street, Bank, Earls Court & Canary Wharf. Becky uses Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness to treat a range of difficulties with a particular interest in Borderline Personality Disorder and the difficulties that go with this condition such as relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, low-self esteem, social anxiety, fear of public speaking, fear of intimacy, interpersonal difficulties, anger, body image issues, eating disorders and addictions.
How do people become cult victims and somehow escape from the clutches of devils such as David Koresh, David Berg, and William Kamm? Claire spent the first 36 years of her life in two different strict religious movements…the latter of which was Australia’s largest Doomsday cult… The Order of Saint Charbel, created by a pedophile named, William Kamm, also known as "The Little Pebble". In 2005, Kamm was sentenced to ten years in prison for a string of sexual attacks including aggravated sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl. He claimed that she was one of his 84 mystical wives. Kamm claimed to have received advice from the Virgin Mary that the girl should be chosen as one of 12 queens and 72 princesses who would all become his wives, with whom he would spawn a new human race after the world was cleansed and burnt by a ball of fire. Trapped on a 20-acre compound fenced in with barbed-wire and no connection to the outside world…no television, no newspapers, Claire planned her escape. Through her courage and desperation, Claire and her eight children would finally escape this devil's clutches; and for the first time in her life, would embrace freedom.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/prevailbeyond)
Australia is mostly known for its slew of dangerous animals. But what about their cults? Today, Alesia talks about The Order of St. Charbel, an Australian cult started by William "Little Pebble" Kamm. He believed that he had received visions from the Virgin Mary saying that she was going to provide 12 queens and 72 princesses for him to repopulate the postapocalyptic Earth with his “holy seed".Disclaimer: Content is not acceptable for children. Claire Ashman is a remarkable woman. She grew up in a sect, a break away from the Catholic Church, and at 18 married a man who would lead her into an even more sinister community. For almost a decade she lived by the whim of a man who called himself "Little Pebble", the leader of a doomsday cult called The Order of St. Charbel. Forced to join the religious order, she took a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience and attended prayer sessions three times a day, It was the concern for the safety of her eight young children that eventually saw her bravely flee with her kids from the secretive cult , led by convicted rapist and pedophile William Kamm, on the NSW south coast. After escaping the cult, Claire had no idea about the outside world or how to survive on her own. But survive she did. Claire went on to forge an amazing life, is an author, a coach and has delivered no less that four Ted X talks. She has remarried and raising her children in Brisbane, Australia.Claire joins host, Sandy Lowres in the Confessional (ironic - yes, we know!) to tell Part 2 of Claire's remarkable journey of survival. (*Note: We made a conscious decision to have Claire's story told in two parts so that she could tell it fully - we recommend you listen to Part 1 first for context). Claire Ashman spent the first 36 years of her life in two different strict religious movements. After defying her husband, the cult “leader” and the entire group by asking too many questions, Claire and her family found themselves evicted from the infamous ‘Order of St Charbel’ religious group. Claire takes us through the whole roller coaster journey, going deep on what goes on in religious cults and how ‘leaders’ manage to convince people of their power and trust their guidance. The most intriguing part of our chat is when Claire details her transition back into ‘normal’ life. When you’ve been brought up on a completely different reality, how do you cope? If you don’t attend church on Sunday, will the world implode?

Claire is a survivor of 2 cults. Claire recently gave her 4th Tedx talk. She is known for her strength, courage, and determination in pushing through difficult obstacles in order to create a life of freedom for her and her 9 children. Her recently released book, Lessons From A Cult Survivor, aims to changes our perception of cults as a thing of the past to noticing that there are 3,000 cults today in Australia alone. Cults affect us all in some way. She wants cult members to know they can leave safely and re-enter a friendly and accepting society. The cult-like mindset isn't limited by fences, it spills into modern societal culture through social media, corporate culture and exploitation.
William Kamm has a 10pm curfew, and is not allowed to spend time with girls under the age of 17. He is prevented from entering the Shoalhaven district of New South Wales, and his movements and communications are monitored. These are conditions of his release after serving 9 years in jail for crimes he committed against two teenage girls – yet his followers still believe that he is the next true Pope, and that the Virgin Mary speaks to him on the 13th day of every month.Special Guest: Claire Ashman.CW: references to manipulative behaviours, and sexual assault of minors. Prayers and preparation for the apocalypse - two women share with Kim Chakanetsa their experiences of life in strict religious communities they would call cults. Natacha Tormey was born into an international evangelical group and led a highly regimented life in communes in Thailand, Indonesia and France. She says physical discipline and sexual abuse were common, and as children they were separated from their parents. As a teenager she began to question the ideas of the leaders, and at 18 she left the cult and her family behind. Natacha has now settled in the UK and is the author of 'Cults - A Bloodstained History'. Claire Ashman grew up in a strict religious community in Australia. She left at 18 to get married, but a few years later her husband joined them up to what she now calls a doomsday cult. Claire and her eight children spent their life behind barbed wire fences and there was limited contact with the outside world. Much time was spent preparing for an impending apocalypse. A decade ago, Claire and her family left. She now calls herself an anti-cult activist. Photo and credit: (L) Claire Ashman Photo and credit: (R) Natacha Tormey
