If you're active on social media, it feels like every other day someone is outed as a scammer, an abuser or a master manipulator.  And if they were in the spiritual space? Yuck.  In this episode, Mik and Jenn get into the red flags that might signal scammers are lurking, but more importantly, how to use your intuition to sniff out who might not be genuine. Some things we talked about in this episode: Jenn recently read a really interesting article about a California town having a water crisis and the steps that they're taking to conserve. You can read it on Bloomberg. In that same article, one town offered their residents 50% off on Flume, a smart device that monitors your water usage at your house.  You can find the product on their website and more information about water conservation on their Instagram. You can read more about Dana Chanel and her case with the Pennsylvania Attorney General on Buzzfeed News.Full length David Taylor DepositionThe Lula Rich docuseries is a wild ride. You can watch on Amazon Prime.Enneagram research paperWe Seduced on Starz, which is a docuseries about the NXIVM cult. There is another docuseries on NXIVM called The Vow on HBO Max. We won't link it because one of the producers was in the cult and may have downplayed his role (WTF?). The Guru Jagat story that Jenn mentioned is detailed on Insider. We also wanted to bring back therapy resources for anyone who may have encountered spiritual abuse: Open Path Collective | TherapyForBlackMen | TalkspaceIn our “As Seen on TV” segment, we wrapped up with the amazing documentary that we watched called Fantastic Fungi.  It's really a MUST. A Little Bit CultyIf you watched “The Vow” or have followed the fall of NXIVM, you know Moira Kim Penza as the prosecutor who brought Keith Raniere to justice. Her accomplishments are mighty: Like Keith's conviction on all counts including racketeering and sex trafficking and a brisk 120 year sentence. Moira's groundbreaking approach to the case has been credited with paving the way for other sex trafficking prosecutions against powerful individuals. In other words: She's a total badass. In this episode, Moira sits down with Sarah and Nippy to talk about what it's like to take on a world-class dirtbag (our wording, not hers) and what really chaps her ass about NXIVM's Voldemort.More about today's guest: Moira is now in private practice as a litigator, and a partner at Wilkinson Stekloff. Crain's New York business named her in the 40 under 40 list, she's been ranked as one of Bloomberg Law's 40 under 40, and her legal analysis has been featured in The NY Times, CNN, ABC, NPR and Daily Beast. ~The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Lola Blanc is a singer/songwriter, filmmaker, actress, and cult survivor. Her single “Angry Too” has over 20 million streams on Spotify, and as a songwriter, Blanc has also written for other artists including Britney Spears. Blanc's work as a filmmaker has been spotlighted by BILLBOARD, FANGORIA, FUNNY OR DIE, and the prestigious short film channel OMELETO. Much of her work is inspired by her childhood practicing Mormonism, where she and her mother fell prey to a charismatic “prophet,” who turned out to be a cult leader. Meagan Elizabeth is a stand-up comedian, writer, and actress from Los Angeles who has performed at the legendary Laugh Factory. She was raised in a high control Christian group known as the Two by Twos, an international, home-based new religious movement that has its origins in Ireland at the end of the 19th century. Among members, the church is typically referred to as "The Truth" or "The Way" Together, Lola & Meagan co-host a podcast called Trust Me: Cults, Extreme Belief, and the Abuse of Power, where they share their experiences and fight the stigma cult survivors are often exposed to. On the show, they have interviewed survivors of groups like NXIVM, the Manson Family, Heaven's Gate, the Children of God, and many more. In this week's conversation, Lola and Meagan share with Rachel their experiences growing up in cults noting the similarities in the control mechanisms used as well as the after-effects that come to light with distance from the group. Together they unravel the patriarchal structure of both groups and explain the work it took for them to overcome this sexist conditioning. Lola and Meagan go on to provide insights on what gave them the courage to leave and discuss how it's felt to share their personal tragedy in public as a means to fight the stigma and loneliness of other survivors. Before You Go: Rachel explains how cults take advantage of followers through the use of confession and relates it to Robert J Lifton's criteria for thought reform. She explains how to share wisely, but also withhold wisely. This week I had the privilege of speaking to Sarah Edmondson, defector of the NXIVM cult and author of "Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped the Cult that Bound My Life."  In 2005, when NXIVM, a personal and professional development company, promised to provide the tools and insight Sarah needed to reach her potential, she was intrigued. Over her twelve-year tenure, she went from student to coach and eventually operated her own NXIVM center in Vancouver. Questions kept coming up about the organization's rules and practices, which came to a head in 2017 when she accepted an invitation from her best friend to join DOS, a “secret sisterhood” within NXIVM. Sarah's full story as a whistleblower is featured in the CBC podcast “Uncover: Escaping NXIVM” (downloaded over 25 million times) and “The Vow”, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary series on NXIVM.  In 2019, Sarah published Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult that Bound My Life, with Kristine Gasbarre. In this tell-all memoir, she shares her story from the moment she takes her first seminar to her harrowing fight to get out of NXIVM, collaborate with the FBI, help others, and heal. Sarah is keeping the conversation via her own podcast, "A Little Bit Culty,"  by exploring the fads, beliefs, and trends that blur the line between devotion and dysfunction. Co-hosted by her husband and fellow NXIVM whistleblower Nippy, the podcast is part conversational coffee date and part deep dive on everything from Waco to lululemon. And while there was nothing small about Sarah's cult experience, “A Little Bit Culty” is grounded in her mission to help people understand, heal from, and avoid abusive situations, one little red flag at a time. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/zoescurletis/support

Kelly has also been featured in a series of interviews about the downfall of the now notorious NXIVM cult, in the critically acclaimed documentary “Seduced”, currently streaming on Starz. As an unsuspecting, ancillary piece to the NXIVM puzzle, Kelly was faced with the hard truth that she needed to fight like hell to take back control of her destiny. In the first of a 2-part episode (part b to be released on Sunday), Marc and Kristina continue the dive into the GenX-dominated fandom/standom that surrounds William White, a 21-year-old TikTok creator and model from Canada.  During the researching of this project, Marc and Kristina have repeatedly questioned how the fandom went from women sincerely supporting women and together helping to catapult a deserving young man to internet fame, all the way to virtual gang warfare in five months.  We believe that social media (with its promise of anonymity, false sense of intimacy, and a misguided sense of security around expectations of privacy) and the perfect storm of events surrounding the discovery of William White by his Generation X fans (who themselves were seeking fun and perhaps connection and camaraderie on a new social media platform), have led to a standom that is marked on all sides by bullying, organized propaganda campaigns, disinformation, doxxing, threats of legal action, growing resentments that devolve into angry outbursts, and, most dramatically, the involvement of state and federal law enforcement actively investigating various allegations. William White is actually secondary to this narrative.  He is discussed only as and when he illustrates a point within the story of his fandom.  This is not a biography of William or the things he did last summer.  Neither Marc, nor Kristina, is interested in bashing William or hurting him.  We only wish him the best as his career continues. Please join us on social media.  You may find us on Facebook (genxtemporaneous), Instagram (xtemporaneouspod), Twitter @seriousproduce (Kristina) @marceatspeach (Marc), and on TikTok (@kristinagenx and @marcsned).   Resources and Citations: Stein, Joel. In this episode, Marc and Kristina explore the difference between fandom, standom, and cults. This episode provides a framework for exploring, once again, the crisis of meaning and the ways in which people look for communities to join and find support and camaraderie. We dig into what defines each branch of admiration and community and we lay the groundwork for the next episode in this series, which will do a deep dive into the rise of a relatively new fandom that has fluoresced around a young Canadian TikTok creator and fledgling model called William White. William, at 21, energized a following that is largely made up of women ranging in age from late 30s to beyond 70 beginning during Memorial Day weekend of 2020. By the time of this publication, the fandom has devolved into warring factions where the daily norm involves leaked personal messages, bullying threats of doxxing, family members being harrassed, coordinated mass reporting of accounts across multiple social media platforms, threats of legal action and death threats. All of this is accomplished in the name of a young man whose consistent message to fans has been to spread joy and positivity and unity. This is why we can't have nice things, darling. She also shares her insight on high control groups like cults, and how seeking support is essential when you feel trapped. Background: Sarah Edmondson is an actor, author, and advocate for people in coercively controlled relationships.  For the past 15 or so years of her life, Sarah had a key role in enrolling people into the NXVIM organization until she uncovered and fell victim to the nefarious actions of the cult's leader Keith Raniere. Because of her bravery along with the actions of more of Raniere's victims, he is now serving a 120-year sentence for federal sex trafficking, forced labor, and other charges.  Sarah's full story as a whistleblower is featured in the CBC podcast Uncover: Escaping NXIVM (downloaded over 25 million times) and The Vow, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary series on NXIVM. Now that Edmondson is free from the NXVIM cult, she is producing her own podcast A Little Bit Cultly with her husband Nippy, another former NXVIM member.  Her bravery, well-spoken nature, and honesty make her a wonderful and fascinating podcast guest and we're so honored to have the opportunity to share her story.   In this episode, we also talk about:  Sarah's developing expertise on high control groups like cults. Burkey returns for his sixth episode burdened with a little case of "empathy fatigue", i.e. when you exhaust your capacity to tolerate minor inconveniences. We had no useful advice or sympathy for him but did briefly discuss which affects us more, the virus itself or fear of it, and how one goes about vetting information should s/he refuse to take it at face value. After highlighting the difference between asking for permission and asking for information, which is an important distinction and one we are rarely able to self-monitor, Burkey accurately described 2020 by declaring, "it's about power, they need to do it willingly."   A discussion about the NXIVM cult leads to comparisons with the federal government ... I mean, why wouldn't it? Because, when someone else — someone in a leadership position, elected, self-appointed or otherwise — tells you what is information and what is misinformation, well, then you don't have to bother thinking for yourself. Wait, this podcast MUST be disinformation because we are encouraging you to think for yourself.   When the conversation finally turns to diet, Michael declares that it has nothing to do with science, that it is unknown and unknowable ... as mysterious as religion or the universe itself and yet, people "know enough to be ashamed" (of their behavior) but clearly don't care because, "they still drink SlimFast™."   Rabbit holes in this episode include Australia, the War on Drugs, marketing and shitty incentives, decision-fatigue, censorship, and raw milk.
