A bunch of you requested that we un-paywall this recent bonus episode, which features some highly practical insights for organizers, volunteers, and public servants. So we have! (All the other bonus episodes are good too; please subscribe.)—Right wing movements thrive by cultivating fears of disorder. Conservatives depict blue cities as sites of rampant crime, chaos, and iniquity. And often enough, it is progressives — with their overdeveloped empathy and concern for the poor and criminalized — who take the blame. Recently, a rising chorus of voices on the center-left, including figures like Ezra Klein, have embraced the thesis that perceptions of disorder in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have contributed to America's rightward turn. But is that accurate? And can anything be done about it?In this episode, Sam is joined by organizer, writer, and podcaster Hayes Davenport to discuss his experiences fighting against this sort of backlash in Los Angeles. As soon as Hayes had helped his friend Nithya Raman get elected to the LA City Council in 2020 and joined her staff, conservative forces in city government mobilized to thwart her pro-tenant agenda and blame the tiny faction of progressives on the council for rising crime and homelessness. How did they respond? What can the past few years in LA politics teach the American left? And can we imagine a leftist politics that short-circuits the right's effort to use disorder to undermine our efforts to address its underlying causes: government neglect, poverty, and exploitation. We discuss! Further Reading:Hayes Davenport, "Ezra Klein is wrong about this," Big City Heat, Dec 9, 2024.— "Violent crime is down. Why are so many people mad about it?" Send us a textWhat's the first film you think of when you see the words "Cult Movie"? Chances are, it's either some perennial classic full of fishnets, gold lamé shorts and rolls of toilet paper being lobbed at the screen, or a pulpy grindhouse thriller that's hardly ever seen the light of day — because it's only ever screened in seedy cinemas at midnight. Or, maybe it's even a deeply personal picture you and a small group of friends got together to watch over and over in college. That's really the beauty of the cult movie — any one can be a quotable quip-off that holds up to repeated viewing. On this edition of FYF, Saint and Jim take a look at the phenomenon of cult films, discuss what makes for the perfect flick-with-a-following, and go over some of the biggest movies to have ever earned the label.

☪☪On this popular replay from 2020 (can you believe it's been that long?!?!?!), podcaster mom, Farheen Raza @freeniraza, shared Shia history, practice, and whether or not sects make a difference in America. During this time of division and change in our nation, it DOES matter when we have schisms within Muslim America. Let's close those gaps together. A lot has changed for Farheen since we recorded this, so follow her and find out what that is.☪☪Part 2 of this conversation was aired in June 2020, and we encourage you to follow up with that one next. This week, tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Amazon Music, or head to our website and listen on the landing page. Martin Tanner describes the Jewish sects that existed about a century before the time of Christ, during the lifetime of Christ, and about a century after, including the Maccabees, Sadducees, Phrisees, Zealots, Essenes, Gelileans, and several Baptist groups. The Maccabees were the first sect within Judaism.  The Sadducees denied the resurrection.  The Pharisees were the "lawyers" of the New Testament era.  They knew the laws of Judaism.. The Zealots did not separate religion and politics, and were the terrorists of their day, killing with knives those who they thought were thwarting the truth.  The Essenes were the Dead Sea Scrolls community.  They though themselves to be the livers of the higher law.

We discuss the four common elements of every worldview: what is good, where good and bad come from, who deserves good, and how to do good. The conversation also delves into the challenges of understanding and evaluating different worldviews, the role of in-group signaling, and the importance of understanding other perspectives. We also discuss Valueism as a life philosophy based on intrinsic values and effective action to increase them, the decline of traditional religion, the search for alternative forms of community and meaning, group differences, and the extremes of the distribution, language ambiguity, and imprecision used to hide behind claims and avoid accountability - and much more. Embark on a riveting journey back to the tempestuous days of the Reformation in Germany, where Fr. Stephen Sanchez offers his profound insights into the religious and political whirlwind that reshaped the Christian faith. Prepare to unearth the roots of denominationalism and discover the painstakingly woven influences of figures like Wycliffe and Huss, pivotal moments such as the Avignon Papacy and the Great Western Schism, and the Renaissance's nurturing of individualism—all setting the stage for Martin Luther's indelible impact on history and theology. This episode paints a vivid tableau of the aftermath of Luther's defiance, from the Peasant Revolt to the rise of the Anabaptists and the intricate denominational splits that followed. Immerse yourself in the narratives of Zwingli, Calvin, and the English Reformation under Henry VIII, as we explore how these leaders and their controversial decisions led to an array of new religious movements and sects. Father Sanchez helps us grapple with the enduring legacy of these tumultuous times, assessing how they continue to influence our contemporary struggle between personal significance and the common good. Join us for an enlightening exploration of the events that forever changed the course of Christian history.Have something you'd love to hear Fr. Stephen and John talk about? The Middle East is in turmoil, but trying to understand the conflict in terms of simple geopolitics doesn't provide a good explanation. Iran is using proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen to attack Israel and pressure the West. But Iran is a Shia nation while its most violent proxy, Hamas, is an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni group that wants to restore the caliphate—which was based in Turkey. Dr. Timothy Furnish, a scholar of Islamic eschatology, joins us to help untangle the web that binds together Shias and Sunnis, and Persians and Arabs, in their opposition to Israel and the West. Since the 1960s California has always been a place associated with alternative beliefs, countercultural movements and alternative lifestyles. The hippy movement, with it's summer of love, fueled by the west coast psychedelic music scene will always be a highlight from the era, but the truth is, the state of California's links to alternative beliefs go back much further and manifested in much stranger ways than a bunch of long haired students having a good time. Labour movements, civil rights activism and the gold rush era can all be associated with California's ties to alternative living, as can its long history with cult groups who have thrived in the area throughout history. With the boom of New Thought, Eastern Spirituality and alternative religions, countless groups have emerged to furnish the world with their peculiar beliefs and practices. One group known as The Divine Order of the Royal Arms of the Great Eleven, however, trumps many with its utterly nonsensical story of animal sacrifice, ritual worship, mysterious disappearances and elusive publications.
