From illicit love letters to political bribes, everyone has a secret, and it's the threat of exposure that's key to this crime -- and we discovered a whole lot of surprising examples along the way -- including a man who built his own submarine, hoping to escape with his payout under Lake Michigan; it sounds made up, but we speak the truth. We have enjoyed sharing these sometimes-almost-unbelievable stories of crime and criminals with you. “I got a revolver to protect us, and I soon had use for it,” stated Constance Kopp when interviewed about the intruders intimidating her family under the cover of darkness at her home. Her assistance with solving the case led to her role as the first female appointed deputy sheriff of Bergen County, New Jersey. Let's talk about how Constance got there in a time when women were not-so-much welcomed into such work. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Constance Kopp (1878-1931) was the first woman sheriff's deputy in the United States. She's now known as a pioneering feminist, but when she was alive she was seen as an aggressive woman tired of men getting away with everything. This month, we're highlighting Ragers: women who used their anger— often righteous, though not always— to accomplish extraordinary things. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. It only took 47 episodes for me to turn my podcast into a drinking game and with an unlikely book at that. Amy Stewart's historical fiction novel Girl Waits With Gun follows Constance Kopp and her sisters as the deal with the reign of terror brought down on them by a shady silk man. I introduce a new segment called are there romantic undertones or am I just a romantic?, discuss Constance's characterization, and talk about where fiction meets reality in this novel.

We discuss the untold story of the 1st female sheriff
Amy Stewart's had several hit non-fiction books about the natural world including The Drunken Botanist. Recently, she's turned her attention to novels with a series of books based on the true-life exploits of one of America's first women deputy sheriff's, Constance Kopp, as well as her sisters Norma and Fleurette. The first book was Girl Waits with Gun, followed by Lady Cop Makes Trouble, Miss Kopp's Midnight Confessions, and today we'll talk about the fourth installment, Miss Kopp Just Won't Quit, which is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Amy Stewart is an old friend of AbeBooks. We've been following her writing career for many years and saw her move from non-fiction to historical crime fiction. She is also the co-owner of Eureka Books, a bookshop in Northern California. In September, Amy's latest novel is released. Called Miss Kopp Just Won't Quit, this book is the fourth installment in the Kopp Sisters series. A mystery set in the middle of hotly contested election in 1916, Constance Kopp, one of the America's first deputy sheriffs, battles prejudice as a woman is declared insane. Amy shares her thoughts on historical research, book clubs and crime-fighting women.

Amy Stewart talks about her newest book in the Kopp Sisters series: Miss Kopp's Midnight Confessions (September 5, 2017). The best-selling author of Girl Waits with Gun and Lady Cop Makes Trouble continues her extraordinary journey into the real lives of the forgotten but fabulous Kopp sisters. Deputy sheriff Constance Kopp is outraged to see young women brought into the Hackensack jail over dubious charges of waywardness, incorrigibility, and moral depravity. The strong-willed, patriotic Edna Heustis, who left home to work in a munitions factory, certainly doesn’t belong behind bars. And sixteen-year-old runaway Minnie Davis, with few prospects and fewer friends, shouldn’t be publicly shamed and packed off to a state-run reformatory. But such were the laws—and morals—of 1916. Constance uses her authority as deputy sheriff, and occasionally exceeds it, to investigate and defend these women when no one else will. But it's her sister Fleurette who puts Constance's beliefs to the test and forces her to reckon with her own ideas of how a young woman should and shouldn't behave. Against the backdrop of World War I, and drawn once again from the true story of the Kopp sisters, Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions is a spirited, page-turning story that will delight fans of historical fiction and lighthearted detective fiction alike.
I interviewed author, Amy Stewart, about her book, Girl Waits With Gun last September. (In the interview we talk about her book signing – don’t pay attention to that. It’s over. She won’t be there. Stay home.) This part truth/part fiction story tells the tale of Constance Kopp, first female deputy sheriff. Learn how Amy found […]
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs. Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared. - Amazon Review The Avid Reader Show is sponsored by Wellington Square Bookshop in Chester County, PA.
