Wellness can feel complicated, but most of what matters for long, healthy living is surprisingly simple. In this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, I sit down with my longtime friend Dr. Ezekiel “Zeke” Emanuel—oncologist, bioethicist, and author of Eat Your Ice Cream—to explore six core principles that support longevity, from food and movement to social connection and purpose. Zeke shares what we're getting wrong about wellness, why community matters more than we think, and how small choices can reshape both our health and our healthcare system. Watch the full conversation on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts. We discuss: • Why simple habits outperform extreme biohacks—and how to build them into daily life • How social connection protects your health as powerfully as diet and exercise • What to eat for longevity without tracking, restricting, or following trends • How movement, strength, and flexibility each support long-term health and function • What actually improves sleep when you can't “try harder” to rest Longevity isn't about obsession. It's about balance, community, and simple choices. The basics still work, and they matter more than ever. She walks you through managing anger by taking a break before damage is done, shows how simple thanks for dishes, laundry, or bringing in groceries grows goodwill, and offers quick text prompts that keep you and your partner feeling chosen even on hectic days. A short story about a father texting I love you illustrates how fast affection can flow when someone goes first, and the heart in a box question helps you gauge safety and trust, with a thoughtful reminder that your happiness still matters if the effort is not mutual. Topics Covered:BE NICE: Catch anger early, step away before saying words you cannot take back, aim to build up rather than tear down.SAY THANK YOU: Notice chores and small acts, express appreciation out loud to reinforce goodwill and teamwork.STAY CONNECTED: Use quick texts during busy days, say I love you and I am thinking of you to keep the thread alive.HEART SAFETY: Ask if your partner would trust you with their heart, honor your right to happiness if effort is not mutual.Tags: Relationships, Marriage advice, Communication skills, Emotional healthSupport the show

In past conversations, we may have made OD sound smooth and effortless — but the truth is, most of the tough work was anything but easy. From preparing the ground before diving in to remembering that “thick skin” is essential, these guidelines come from lessons learned the hard way: • Till the soil before leaping in • Never underestimate the value of a good warm-up • When in doubt, stop and check in with the group • Drop “right” and “wrong” from your vocabulary • Spend two-thirds of your time serving, which earns you one-third to push back • Never assume you know better • Grow some thick skin Whether you're leading your next leadership meeting or tackling a major change initiative, these rules will help smooth the road and improve your odds of success. So come on in, grab a snack, and let's hit the road together.

Forget chasing happiness—it's fleeting and unpredictable. Instead, Scott dives into practical wisdom that'll help you find contentment and joy in the everyday chaos. From doing what makes your heart sing to keeping things beautifully simple, these aren't just feel-good concepts. They're battle-tested strategies that'll shift how you approach relationships, challenges, and your own expectations. Ready to stop complicating life and start living it better? Featured Story Scott gets real about his creative process, sharing how he threw away six perfectly good podcast recordings because something just wasn't right. Even though his voice was already shot and it meant starting over completely, he knew he had to deliver his authentic self to listeners. That moment of inspiration—choosing to do it right over doing it easy—perfectly captures what it means to follow your heart even when logic says otherwise. It's a powerful reminder that sometimes the best decisions feel crazy in the moment but create magic in the long run. Important Points Happiness is fleeting, but contentment and joy can be cultivated through intentional choices and authentic living. Meeting people where they are in life requires getting out of your own head and letting relationships develop naturally over time. Everything truly is fixable when you approach challenges with the right mindset and willingness to adapt. Memorable Quotes "Do what makes your heart sing. Don't hurt anybody. Just do what makes your heart sing." "Everything's fixable if you have the right mindset." "Figure stuff out. Don't freak out." Scott's Three-Step Approach Choose one thing that makes your heart sing and commit to doing it this week, even if it seems impractical. Identify the most complicated area of your life and write three ways to simplify it immediately. Practice meeting one person exactly where they are today without trying to change or fix them. Today, I'm sharing Earl Nightingale's timeless wisdom from “The Strangest Secret”–the inspiration that got me into this business. These seven simple principles can transform your life, but only if you apply them. Earl Nightingale did over 5,000 radio programs; his insights are just as relevant today as they were decades ago. Featured Story Scott shares the fascinating origin story of Earl Nightingale's “The Strangest Secret.” Created to motivate insurance salesmen while Nightingale was out of town. This spoken-word recording accidentally became the first gold record of its kind. What started as a simple motivational tool for his sales team launched Nightingale's entire career and inspired countless people, including Scott himself. Important Points You become what you think, so focus your mental energy on what you want, not what you're stuck in. Success requires paying the price through time, discipline, and investment — nothing worthwhile comes without effort. Controlling your thoughts is neuroscience in action; let thoughts come and go without dwelling on them. Memorable Quotes “You become what you think. Whatever's going on inside your mind right now is what you will become.” “To get success that's not earned will never last. You must earn it.” “The secrets of success are indeed strange, and if you take the hype out of it, it comes down to the real basics of life.” Scott's Three-Step Approach Control your thoughts by acknowledging them without dwelling on negative patterns. Set clearly defined goals that are specific enough to know exactly what you're accomplishing. Act promptly when your path becomes clear instead of waiting for the “perfect” time. Demystifying Science
Can Simple Rules Explain Reality? Dr. Stephen Wolfram, DemystifySci #343

Stephen Wolfram is a physicists, mathematician, and programmer who believes he has discovered the computational rules that organize the universe at the finest grain. These rules are not physical rules like the equations of state or Maxwell's equations. According to Wolfram, these are rules that govern how the universe evolves and operates at a level at least one step down below the reality that we inhabit. His computational principles are inspired by the results observed in cellular automata systems, which show that it's possible to take a very simple system, with very simple rules, and end up at complex patterns that often look organic and always look far more intricate than the black and white squares that the game started with. We sit down with him for a conversation about the platonic endeavor that he has undertaken, where to draw the line between lived experience and the computational universe, the limits of physics, and the value of purpose and the source of consciousness. This episode features a conversation focusing on community connections and craft beer with Jen Price, a beer educator, a Cicerone Certified Beer Server, and the author of The Chick's Guide to Beer: 7 Simple Rules for the Beer Novice. Jen grew up in Decatur, GA, and her work is dedicated to fostering inclusivity, education, and meaningful connections through beer. As the co-founder of Craft Women Connect, she has created a space for women and beer professionals to learn, collaborate, and thrive within the industry. In 2020, Jen also launched Crafted for Action, an event and experience curation company that centers diversity, equity, and inclusion in the craft beverage space. This company is built on the pillars of craft, community, and culture, and we talk about some ways that these efforts have sparked conversations that extend beyond beer. Their flagship event, coming up this June in Atlanta, is the first craft beverage conference founded by a BIPOC woman, providing a platform for robust discussions and real solutions to drive progress in the industry. In 2025, they have expanded beyond beer to include all craft beverages including an entire track at this year's conference dedicated to wine. Through Crafted for Action, Jen continues to create impactful experiences that challenge the status quo and open doors for underrepresented voices in craft beverage. Outside of beer, Jen is an AICP-certified urban planner specializing in active living planning, community impact assessments, environmental justice, and stakeholder engagement. Her expertise in community-focused planning fuels her commitment to making beer spaces more welcoming and inclusive. If it is not God making the rules, someone else will. God's rules flow out of His character. He is the great I AM. We in the West pride ourselves on freedom from rules, but this has only led to despair, anxiety, abandonment, and anguish. The way of Jesus offers a simple, easy yoke. When we walk at His pace and submit to His rules, we find rest, goodness, and contentment.
