In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff and Becky talk with Rowdy Freeman, a deputy sheriff from California who has become a leading figure in the fight against beehive theft. What began as a criminal investigation over a decade ago drew Rowdy into the world of bees, and today he's not only a law enforcement expert but also a commercial beekeeper managing over 1,200 colonies. Rowdy shares how hive theft has grown into a serious agricultural crime, especially during almond pollination season in California. He explains the tactics thieves use, from stealing entire hives to removing bees from within colonies, and how difficult it can be to trace stolen bees once they've changed hands. Drawing on his experience in both law enforcement and beekeeping, Rowdy offers practical advice for protecting colonies, including using GPS trackers, wireless cameras, and clearly marked equipment. He also discusses how building strong relationships with landowners and reporting even small thefts can help authorities track patterns and intervene. With theft numbers rising and colony losses reaching record highs, Rowdy's perspective is timely and vital. This episode shines a light on an often-overlooked threat facing beekeepers and reminds listeners of the importance of vigilance and community support in protecting our bees. In this episode, Meagan shares her harrowing experience as a deputy sheriff involved in a critical incident that changed her life. She discusses the physical and mental health challenges she faced following the incident, including PTSD and the stigma surrounding mental health in law enforcement. She emphasizes the power of vulnerability and storytelling in healing, the need for better mental health training in law enforcement, and the significance of leadership in fostering a supportive environment. Meagan encourages officers to seek help and highlights the importance of connections outside of their profession. TAKEAWAYS After a suicide attempt, she committed to trauma therapy and EMDR. The culture in law enforcement often discourages emotional vulnerability. Meagan advocates for mental health awareness among first responders. EMDR therapy can be a crucial first step in healing. Finding a supportive community can transform your experience. Being vocal about struggles can inspire others to seek help. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, November 1st and I'm Keith Ippolito. Candidate for Chief Deputy Sheriff Misused Force, Documents Show Documents released by the Cobb County Democratic Committee reveal that Michael Dondelinger, a candidate for Chief Deputy Sheriff, was investigated multiple times for misuse of force during his tenure as a sergeant in the Cobb Sheriff's Office. Incidents include authorizing force as punishment, striking an inmate, and drawing a gun on civilians. Despite these past issues, Republican candidate David Cavender, who selected Dondelinger as his chief deputy, defends him, citing the incidents as nearly two decades old and asserting that Dondelinger has since learned his lesson. The revelations have intensified the sheriff race, with accusations exchanged between Cavender and Democratic Sheriff Craig Owens. Cavender argues that Owens was aware of Dondelinger's past when promoting him to captain, while Owens criticizes the timing of these disclosures. The race has become contentious, with both sides leveraging past incidents to sway voters ahead of the election. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. We talk with retired Deputy Sheriff, wife and mother, Meagan McCarthy, about the circumstances that gave rise to her police advocacy work in California. Meagan's survival story epitomizes the horrible impact of the continued scapegoating and dehumanization of police officers in a state where many of its politicians are struggling to protect their failed policies of criminal justice reform. Throughout all of this, Meagan has conquered significant personal burdens to become an advocate for the thousands of California cops that deserve better. Meagan McCarthy, a former San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy is grateful to be alive. A firearm malfunction would keep the p.o.s. suspect from executing her. If processing that critical incident wasn't enough, the state of California would be there to betray her as well. In California, jurors that have implicit bias against police officer are allowed to serve on juries. Her constitutional rights violated, she was victimized a second time during this incident with the suspect receiving a not guilty verdict. Meagan McCarthy could have allowed this tragedy to define her, instead she used it as a call to action. Meagan and I discuss the incident that started this initiative and how she has become an advocate for our profession. What challenges have you faced that have ignited your passion?More about MeaganAs an advocate, I use my communication and show hosting skills to fight for the rights and well-being of victims and first responders. I have appeared on multiple Fox News segments as a contributor, sharing my insights and perspectives on law enforcement and mental health issues.I am working towards my completion of a bachelor's degree in psychology from National University, which helps me understand the psychological challenges and needs of those who have experienced trauma or violence. I am also a retired Deputy Sheriff, who served for over six years at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, until I was medically retired due to PTSD. I received the Above and Beyond Award for my advocacy work from Crime Survivors in October 2023.My goal is to end harmful legislation for police in California and to bring awareness to mental health in police across the world. I believe that by sharing my story and educating the public, I can make a positive difference in the lives of others who have suffered or are suffering from similar situations. Deputy Sheriff Husband Died, State Ignores Them. Deputy Daryl Wayne Shuey, a dedicated member of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department in Washington, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on November 10, 2020, succumbing to a heart attack while on patrol at 6:00 am. Engaged in the disposal of heavy items related to a prior case, Deputy Shuey was found unresponsive next to his patrol vehicle. Despite efforts at the MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital, he passed away at 7:00 am. Deputy Shuey's unwavering commitment spanned 26 years of service with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. He leaves behind his wife, two children, mother, and two brothers. Karen Shuey, his widow, courageously shares the story of his death, reflecting on its profound impact on her and her children and the sense of being unjustly robbed by the State. The journey from the funeral to the deliberate omission of his name on a memorial wall is a testament to the disrespect she feels. Deputy Sheriff Husband Died, State Ignores Them. The grieving widow's dismay is heightened by the fact that Deputy Shuey's name is absent from the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial, despite national recognition. Of the 341 individuals commemorated for sacrificing their lives since 1854, Karen Shuey asserts that her husband's absence is a heart-wrenching omission. She emphasizes his dedicated service, the ultimate sacrifice he made, and her belief that he rightfully belongs on that memorial wall. Deputy Sheriff Husband Died, State Ignores Them. Despite national acknowledgment, including engraving his name on the Fallen Officer Memorial in Spokane and inclusion on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., the state-level recognition remains elusive. The Department of Justice, under the Hometown Heroes Act, recognized Deputy Shuey's line-of-duty death, qualifying his family for federal death benefits. However, the nonprofit organization Behind the Badge, responsible for adding names to the state memorial, follows specific criteria. While heart attacks can be considered line-of-duty deaths if occurring during stressful or strenuous non-routine activities, Karen Shuey contests the inconsistency in applying these criteria, particularly in her husband's case. Deputy Sheriff Husband Died, State Ignores Them. The Washington State Fraternal Order of Police (WAFOP) echoes Karen Shuey's concerns, advocating for legislative changes to ensure that officers recognized nationally receive the honor they deserve within their home state. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Founder of The Lady Law Shield and Protective Wellness, Bridget Truxillo. Bridget knows the challenges law enforcement officers face, both outside and inside their agencies based on her experiences as a former Deputy Sheriff in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida. Bridget started out in Patrol, but very quickly transferred to the Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit (NOCU), and also became the only female member of the SWAT team. During her time in the NOCU, Bridget routinely conducted undercover buys of narcotics and effectuated many arrest and search warrants as a result of her undercover operations. While on the SWAT team, Bridget participated in serving search warrants, active shooter and hostage situations, competed twice in SWAT Round-up International (an International SWAT competition), as well as many hundreds of hours of training. Although being a Deputy Sheriff allowed Bridget to serve the public, Bridget realized she wanted to find a way to serve the law enforcement and first responder community directly so she left law enforcement to attend law school as a means to glean the knowledge and skills necessary for this purpose. After 13+ years practicing law in civil litigation, Bridget was able to curate a unique business dedicated to representing and supporting law enforcement officers and first responders. Today, Bridget and Dennis discuss tips for woman in law enforcement, importance of departments looking out for their men and women, seeing, validating and hearing your fellow co-workers, not taking things personal, legal advise and not controlling the nature of the job.
