Surrey, BC has already recorded 51 extortions this year. 11 of them ended with shots fired. That might sound surprising until you realise last year there were 133 cases, and 49 related shootings. So what's actually driving this? And how is it possible that after more than a year of this, no level of government (municipal, provincial, federal) and no police force has managed to get it under control? Cyber risk is escalating fast, and most business leaders are still operating with outdated assumptions. This episode of Security Squawk confronts that reality head on. Ransomware is no longer limited to encrypted files and downtime calculations. Threat actors are escalating pressure tactics into the physical world, including intimidation and direct threats against employees and executives. That shift fundamentally changes the risk profile for organizations. Once physical safety enters the equation, cybersecurity stops being a technical issue and becomes a leadership, legal, and duty of care problem. Companies that are unprepared for this escalation expose themselves to serious liability, regulatory scrutiny, and reputational damage that insurance alone cannot fix. At the same time, businesses are quietly introducing new risks through personal AI agents and automation tools. These tools are often adopted without security review, legal oversight, or compliance consideration. Marketed as productivity enhancers, personal AI agents frequently operate with broad access to email, files, customer data, and internal systems. When these agents mishandle or leak data, responsibility does not fall on the software vendor or the employee experimenting with automation. It falls squarely on the business. Regulators, insurers, and courts do not accept ignorance or convenience as a defense. We also examine why extortion groups like ShinyHunters continue to succeed even as companies invest heavily in security controls. This is not about sophisticated hacking techniques. It is about business pressure. Attackers understand deadlines, brand risk, customer trust, and executive fear. They exploit supply chains, third party vendors, and disclosure obligations to force decisions under time constraints. Paying extortion may feel like resolution, but it often increases long term risk, invites repeat targeting, and complicates regulatory reporting. Throughout this episode, the focus is not on tools, vendors, or technical jargon. It is on decision making. Who owns cyber risk inside the organization? How prepared is leadership to respond when incidents move beyond IT into legal, HR, and physical security territory? And how does a board defend its actions when regulators or plaintiffs start asking questions after an incident? This conversation is designed for CEOs, business owners, board members, and senior leaders who understand that cybersecurity is inseparable from operational risk, financial exposure, and executive accountability. If your strategy relies on cyber insurance, compliance checklists, or the belief that serious incidents only happen to larger companies, this episode will challenge that thinking. Security Squawk cuts through vendor noise and fear driven messaging to focus on what actually matters to businesses making real decisions. Support the show at https://buymeacoffee.com/securitysquawk

Today's Headlines: Things escalated fast in Minnesota this weekend after ICE officers fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and veterans' affairs worker, during a chaotic confrontation caught on multiple videos. Witnesses say Pretti was directing traffic and filming on his phone while trying to help someone else, and that his legally owned firearm had already been taken by agents before he was tackled. Federal officials initially labeled him a “domestic terrorist,” a claim sharply contradicted by video evidence and eyewitness affidavits. The shooting has triggered a major political and legal backlash. Minnesota officials say DHS and DOJ blocked state investigators from accessing the scene, even with a warrant, and the state has filed suit to prevent the destruction of evidence. Governor Tim Walz has ordered an independent investigation into both the killing and the federal government's public statements about it. The controversy deepened after Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter threatening not to end federal operations in Minnesota unless the state hands over Medicaid, SNAP, and voter data and rolls back sanctuary policies—moves critics call political extortion. Meanwhile, tensions are rising nationally. Protesters braved extreme cold across Minnesota, businesses staged a general strike, and more than 60 major Minnesota-based companies urged de-escalation. Additionally, the detention of a U.S. Army veteran observing ICE activity, the assault of Rep. Maxwell Frost, a massive sewage spill in Washington, DC, and renewed debate over vaccine mandates round out a very chaotic weekend. President Trump has largely praised federal agents' actions, even as his administration faces lawsuits, congressional infighting over ICE funding, and growing international criticism ahead of the World Cup. Ron Chhinzer, former police officer and national expert on gang prevention, discusses Canada's growing extortion gang crisis. He explores why South Asian communities in Brampton, Surrey, and Calgary have become the targets for these crimes, tracing the issue to historical tensions between India and Sikh separatists. 2026-01-19 | UPDATES #108 | Nothing makes sense. And everything is clear. Trump says he “needs” Greenland to deter Russia… while starving Ukraine of support and now inviting Putin, Orbán, and Lukashenko onto something called the “Board of Peace.” A “peace board” with a $1 billion cover charge. He's invited Putin, a man who has started more wars than any other leader alive today and been responsible for more deaths that most tyrants of the last 100 years. A man who has demonstrably not made peace in 2025, despite being presented with many opportunities through draft proposals and ceasefire requests. If this was not real and serious, one could pass it off as the greatest piece of trolling ever carried out in history. But Trump means it. This is indeed a lucrative club, and by design, perhaps the fees will only appeal to autocrats, kleptocrats and oligarchs. Democracies, not so much. If you ever needed a single headline for the collapse of the rules-based order into a demented billionaire's vanity project, is it this.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Reuters (Jan 19, 2026) — Trump's Norway message, Greenland “Complete and Total Control,” tariff linkage, Danish FM quote, Greenland PM quote. New supply of oil is coming into the US, prices are going to drop. Trump is shutting down the [CB] plan down, no institutional investors in real estate, prices are about to come way down. Newsom wants to confiscate Bitcoin. The [DS] is feeling pain, their drug, human and oil trafficking system is being dismantled. The [DS] have lost the information war, common sense has now taken over. The [DS] will now being moving to physical war. This is the trap Trump has set to use the Insurrection Act. Slowly but surely the [DS] will become more violent and Trump and team will have to call the ball. Buckle up, the storm is approaching. Economy Trump’s Tariffs Are Sinking The Eurozone German trade surpluses are shrinking, with 2025 exports to the US projected down 7% and overall trade surplus far below 2024 levels. Structural challenges—especially Chinese competition in automotive—compound short-term pressures, threatening Germany’s role as Eurozone anchor. A German recession risks Eurozone-wide contagion, potential ECB stimulus, and euro depreciation, clouding the outlook for 2026. Since tariffs stepped in, the Eurozone has struggled with exports and hasn’t even retaliated to them. A passive approach that shows off all its weaknesses and, above all, is sinking the economy of its major member: Germany. Germany was already stuck with a negative GDP growth before tariffs, but the latter are acting as a final blow for the third economy in the world. A couple of weeks ago I pointed out the main risks that concern Japan (the fourth economy in the world); now it is time to assess the shape of the German economy. How tariffs are hitting Germany Germany's total exports in 2024 amounted to $1.63 trillion, and 11% of these goods were exported to the US, the main trading partner. Just this data says a lot; in fact, Germany used to rely on the US to generate billions and billions of trade surpluses. A sort of Chinese approach, but at a lower scale. Now, almost every European good exported to the US is subject to a 15% tariff, which is making German goods less convenient for US companies. We know that the latter pay most of the tariffs, and this means bearing higher costs of goods sold, therefore lower profits. Companies don't like to reduce their net profit margin, so it is not a surprise they are looking around to find new trading partners. On top of this significant issue, the currency fluctuations are adding further pressure on German exports.. The petition outlines explosive allegations regarding Sheriff McFadden's conduct over House Bill 10, a controversial state law mandating cooperation between local sheriffs and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Rep. Cunningham, a fellow Democrat who provided a critical vote to override the Governor's veto of the bill, alleges McFadden threatened her safety to influence her vote. According to the petition, McFadden told Cunningham that if she continued to support the bill, the “people of Mecklenburg County would ‘come after' her.” The filing claims McFadden added, “I don't want to see you get hurt. You live in my county.” Cunningham described the interaction as “akin to a mafia boss demanding money by saying ‘nice little store you've got there; it would be a shame if anything happened to it.’” District Attorney Merriweather confirmed he has asked the SBI's Professional Standards Unit to investigate the claims before his office decides whether to proceed with the removal petition. The DA's letter to the SBI specifically requests an investigation into: Extortion and bribery. Economic threats made to influence legislation. Hatch Act violations (regarding improper political activity). State campaign finance violations. The tanker escaped, headed for the north Atlantic, painted a Russian flag on its hull, and has been operating under a new name (Marinera). US military aircraft are tracking the tanker off the coast of Ireland and are said to be preparing to board it. Brilliant Restitution Plan – President Trump Announces Interim Venezuela Oil Payment of $2 Billion This is way beyond winning, this is stunningly brilliant strategy. Not only has President Trump successfully apprehended Venezuela dictator Nicolas Maduro, but the remaining interim government officials have acquiesced to fund a civil restitution plan to pay for their malfeasance. The government that stole from its people is being forced to pay restitution for their own fraud, abuse and misconduct. [SOURCE] The 30 to 50 million barrels of oil is approximately a $2 billion self-created reconstruction effort. Compare and contrast this approach with the trillions of U.S. taxpayer funds that were used in the failed efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, etcetera…. or even Kuwait, albeit the Kuwaiti's offered, but prior U.S. leadership chose influence over restitution. In this example, almost immediately the funds now in the control of President Trump can be deployed to the greater benefit of the Venezuelan people. Another way to look at this is like a type of ‘sovereign wealth fund' created by the corrupt Venezuelan officials, using the resources that belong to the Venezuelan people, to support the interim needs of the same citizens they victimized. Well done President Trump and Secretary Rubio! Source: theconservativetreehouse.com The second phase will be a phase that we call recovery. And that is ensuring that American, western, and other companies have access to the Venezuelan market in a way that’s fair, also at the same time, begin to create the process of reconciliation nationally, within Venezuela, so that the opposition forces can be amnestied and released from prisons, and brought back to the country, and begin to rebuild civil society. And then the third phase, is of course will be one of transition. Some of this will overlap. I’ve described this to them (Venezuela) in great detail. We’ll have more detail in the days to follow. But we feel like we’re moving forward here in a very positive way. https://twitter.com/Matt_Bracken48/status/2008704247341183281?s=20 with a long-term secret IUD program, where Inuit women and young girls visiting Danish clinics for “health checks” were for unknowingly fitted with dangerous coil IUDs that were left in for years, leaving many sterile and in chronic lifelong pain. His agency is auditing all 14 Medicaid programs that Minnesota flagged as vulnerable to fraud; that excludes 73 other Medicaid programs Minnesota runs. The agency also will “claw back that money” from current Medicaid payments that were to be made to Minnesota, Oz told Fox News. “This is a major problem for the state, because they've got to own the fact that they have been bilking the federal taxpayer [because of] their sloppy behavior for years,” Oz said. Oz said his agency has had difficulty tracking at least $500 million in Medicaid payments to Minnesota. Available data makes it hard to figure out how it was billed and “where it went,” he said. They can be smart as can be, but when they want open borders, when they want, as I said, men in women’s sports, when they want “transgender for everyone!” Bring your kids in, we’re going to change the sex of your child. Just send them our way. […] We have great, common-sense policy. They have horrendous policy. What they do, is they stick together. They never have a no vote. Trump wasn’t whining that he is afraid of impeachment — he was spitting facts: if Democrats win, impeachment is inevitable; so, don’t let them win and show them this is how you do it. Trump made clear to Republicans that they must hammer home their common-sense, America-forward policies and contrast those against the truly terrible schemes of the Democrats. Trump said, “You can own health care. Figure it out.
