J. Walker, about the life, legacy, and enduring significance of her remarkable great-great-grandmother. Ms. Bundles traces Walker's journey from her birth as Sarah Breedlove in post–Civil War Louisiana through an orphaned childhood marked by poverty, labor, and faith, and into her formative years in St. Louis, where church, music, and education shaped her ambitions. She explores how Breedlove's experiences with marriage, motherhood, and economic hardship informed her entrepreneurial drive, leading to the creation of innovative hair-care products and the launch of the Madam C. J. Walker brand. Bundles discusses Walker's development of a national training network that empowered Black women economically, her rise as America's first self-made female millionaire, and her philanthropic leadership. She also highlights Madam Walker's Westchester County, NY,  mansion estate "Villa Lewaro" as a Harlem Renaissance hub, and explores the cultural impact of Self Made. Second-generation Japanease -American women, or Nisei women, faced significant challenges during WWII in Japanese Internment camps, but their experiences also foreced a shift in the structure of their families, allowing them some measure of independence from traditional expectations. Through education, vocational training, and military volunteer opportunities, Nisei women displayed agency and resilence.

Historians use a lot of different sources when they research the past. Many rely on primary source documents, documents that were written by official government bodies or those written by the people who witnessed the events or changes historians are studying. But how do you uncover the voices and stories of people who didn't know how to write or whose families didn't preserve much of their writing?  Maeve Kane, an Associate Professor of History at the University at Albany and author of Shirts Powdered Red: Gender, Trade, and Exchange Across Three Centuries, ran into this very problem as she sought to recover the lives of Haudenosaunee women. Maeve overcame this challenge by researching a different type of historical source—the cloth Haudenosaunee women traded for and the clothing they made and wore. Female CEOs, thought leaders, students, and government officials on Tuesday took part in the third annual International Women's Day at the Indiana Government Center.The free event, co-sponsored by Asian American Alliance and Indiana Commission for Women, was touted as a safe space for women and girls to network and propel their careers forward.Event chair and organizer Rupal Thanawala wanted to assure women could access the resources. “The conversations are really going to inspire and empower women by giving them access to information.”Women spoke about interrupting business as usual by being persistent in the face of failure and reaching out to diverse mentorship. There was huge conversation on sponsorships, by having allies who can advocate for you when you're not in the room.Thirty businesses and organizations puts their products and services on exhibit at the event.Barriers prevent women from achieving equality. Women make up 50% of the U.S. population, but according to speakers at Tuesday's conference, they only make up 30% of CEOs and business leaders. In 1738, a cooper named Benedict Arnold petitioned the Rhode Island General Assembly for a divorce from his wife Mary Ward Arnold. Benedict claimed that Mary had taken a lover and together they had attempted to murder him with poison. How did this story of love, divorce, and attempted murder unfold? What does it reveal about the larger world of colonial America and the experiences of colonial American men and women? As we pass the elusive Telsa Cybertruck, we're reminded of Studebaker's innovative electric cars produced in the early 20th century.   The South Bend manufacturer's electric cars became a mainstay of the company, providing vehicles for personal use as well as transport. They were also marketed in a unique way. Studebaker focused on city businessmen, and especially society women, as the premier customers for electric cars. While gas-powered cars became the company's focus by 1912, Studebaker's innovative designs and skillful presentation nevertheless made their electric cars more than a mere fad. Stamata Revithi (1860s-unknown) was a Greek woman who made history as the first woman to run the marathon race at the Olympics. In 1896, during the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Stamata ran the marathon course the day after the official men's race. Although her run was not recognized by the Olympic committee, her determination and effort paved the way for future women athletes. Lusia Capetillo (1879-1922) was a Puerto Rican union organizer, reporter, and author who saw feminism and workers' rights as inseparable from one another. She fought for the intellectual and financial independence of women and encouraged education for the working class.
