This episode is all about hip hop. Paul Womack, AKA Willie Green, is a New York-based hip hop producer specializing in "art-rap." He produces extremely imaginative, groundbreaking beats for hip hop and pop artists who are not afraid to break the rules and sound completely different. Operating out of his studio in Brooklyn, he works with a roster of super creative and outspoken artists like Quelle Chris, Premrock, Billy Woods, Henry Canyon, EllaMaeFlossy and many others under the label Backwoodz Studioz. We talked about good versus shitty sampling, the difference between studied and naive creativity, drumming with Uncle Dave, the hypocrisy of self-hating immigrants, armchair A&R, and a lot more. Sponsor: Static Electricity. Opening music: "Merchandise" by Fugazi, performed by Pierre de Gaillande with James Fletcher, drums. Welcome to another edition of PoPolitickin. In this episode, we politick with NYC/Oakland emo soul vocalist Corina Corina. Corina Corina was born in Oakland, CA and is the eldest child of political activists. Named after a classic Blues song, it seems her career path in music was set early on. Now with roots in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, Corina Corina brings a fresh and seamless synergy between 90s-style r&b, dark pop, lyrically driven hip hop and the blues and soul music she grew up on. Known by many as one of the hardest working women in the indie music scene, she's spent years touring extensively through the USA and has performed in multiple showcases at South by Southwest in Austin and North by Northwest in Toronto. In early 2017, Corina Corina released a mixtape tribute to Run the Jewels entitled "Run the Blues" and is putting the final touches on her third full length LP, “Hangover Music.” The album written and produced entirely by herself and Willie Green and is a reflective and hard honest look at her relationship with alcohol and her version of adulthood. Through a range of styles and moods, she has created her strongest work yet. Follow Corina Corina on social media @getcorinacorina Follow PoPolitickin on social media @popolitickin
"Basically I'm a hip hop kid who grew up on the blues." - Corina Corina Vocalist Corina Corina was born in Oakland, CA, and is the eldest child of two political activists who were inspired to name her after the classic blues song. Now Bi-coastal with roots in NYC and the SF Bay Area, Corina Corina brings a fresh and melodic vocal hybrid to modern electronic R&B with a strong hip hop edge. She first gained recognition in the New York independent music scene by collaborating with artists like Homeboy Sandman (Stones Throw), Angi3 (Tommy Boy), and internationally-acclaimed producer, Willie Green (Backwoodz Studioz), as well as sharing stages with hip hop heavyweights Talib Kweli, Action Bronson and Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire. Both of her solo albums, “The Eargasm” (2012), and "The Free Way" (2014) were co-produced with Green, and touch on everything from gender inequality to self-love and resisting social norms. Between 2013-2015, Corina Corina has expanded her fan base by embarking on 8 self- booked national tours, following being featured in multiple showcases at South by Southwest and Canada’s North by Northwest. In addition to her tours, she also found time to release two EPs and produce and curate dozens of live events in New York City and all over the country. Corina also performs in the acoustic blues duo Max Caddy, whose 2013 debut EP, "Caddy Tracks,” garnered praise from fans and music journalists alike. In late 2013, Corina Corina topped off her monumental year by launching a successfully funded IndieGoGo campaign to help complete, “The Free Way.” which she calls "the best work she's ever done to date.” In 2014, Corina Corina signed with the Deep Thinka Booking Agency and expands her fan base by spending over half the year touring nationally. This past summer, she has begun her third full length LP, “Hangover Music” which will be written and produced entirely by she and Willie Green and will be released in 2016.
