More players bring competition to Brazil's refined products markets

“O Petróleo é Nosso,” or “The Oil is Ours,” was a popular slogan central to the founding of Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, in 1953. The slogan can also be interpreted more broadly, as Brazil's refined products markets have opened to more participants, leading to a surge in spot market activity and price transparency. As a result, Platts has launched new price assessments for Brazilian gasoline and diesel. How did those spot markets evolve? Why is the Northeast so reliant on imports? How are renewable fuels playing out in gasoline and diesel? Jeff Mower discusses these topics and more with Renato Rostas, manager of the Platts Brazil refined products team, and Brazil gasoline and diesel price reporters Isabela Rocha and Kauanna Navarro. Global Impacts of ‘Unleashing' LNG

Columbia Energy Exchange

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2025 58:58

Europe is facing a challenging year as natural gas prices surge. While the continent seemed to weather the initial shock of losing Russian gas supplies, it's now clear many were declaring victory too soon. Storage levels are dropping this winter, and the loss of Russian pipeline gas through Ukraine has left Europe increasingly dependent on global LNG markets. Meanwhile, in the U.S., President Trump's administration has promised to "unleash American energy dominance" by lifting restrictions on new permits for LNG exports. But questions remain about domestic gas production capacity, infrastructure constraints, and the impact on U.S. prices. How are these developments reshaping global gas markets, and what do they mean for Europe's industrial competitiveness? How might geopolitical tensions affect the future of global gas trade? And what does all of this mean for reducing greenhouse gas emissions? This week on the show, Jason Bordoff talks with gas market experts Anne-Sophie Corbeau and Ira Joseph about the outlook for LNG and its geopolitical and environmental implications. Anne-Sophie is a global research scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy, where she focuses on hydrogen and natural gas. Her career in the energy industry spans over 20 years, including stints as the head of gas analysis at BP, senior gas analyst at the International Energy Agency, and research fellow at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center.  Ira is a senior research associate at the Center on Global Energy Policy. Previously, he headed global generating fuels and electric power pricing at S&P Global Platts. Before that, he was the global head of gas and power analytics at Platts. On our latest  podcast, we take a look at the episodes of Coronation Street shown between the 3rd and the 5th February (Episodes #11,483 - 11,488). Although Corrie had to tie up the 'What happened to Amy?' thread and of course throw in a few Carla scenes to appease the hungry fans, the vast majority of the action centred around the fire at the Platts' house this week. If you enjoyed last year's Whodunnits centred around Lauren and Joel, you're in luck because Corrie has dipped into the same well again this week by presenting a number of suspects for the arson - did Abi torch the house to cover her tracks? Leanne to get revenge on her boyfriend-stealing sister? David to claim on the insurance? Or maybe the culprit is a character we may not be supposed to suspect at this point - someone who hasn't yet had the chance to explain their movements in the minutes before that match was tossed through the letterbox...  After exhausting our thoughts and theories about the week's episodes, we take a trip to The Kabin, where we celebrate Corrie's win at the Broadcast Awards, then we hear some listeners' thoughts on the fire in the feedback section.  Street Talk - 00:22:27 The Kabin - 02:42:43 Feedback - 02:51:58

On our latest episode of the podcast, we chat about what went on in Corrie between the 9th and the 13th December (Episodes #11,435 - 11,440). It may have made things a bit tricky when we were writing out the notes for the episode, but there was quite a bit of criss-crossing over of stories this week, which we always enjoy - and even better when drama with the Platts is at the centre of it! Gail and Jesse's wedding plans, Max taking his eye off the ball with Frankie and getting him whisked away by the Deerings, and, of course, all the intrigue surrounding Shona's accident on Monday night made for another explosive week on the cobbles, and we had a great time chatting about our reaction to it all. Not only that, but we also had Daniel and Daisy getting closer again, some brilliant scenes with Evelyn and even a new actor playing little Harry - great stuff! Not really very much in terms of news this week, so we skip over The Kabin section again and finish off with more of your feedback. Street Talk - 00:17:01 Feedback - 02:48:28

On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Corrie shown in the UK between the 2nd and the 6th December (Episodes #11,429 - 11,434). Christmas time is nearly here, and as an early present, Corrie gave us a reprieve from all the police stories (well, mostly..) and instead focused on two of our favourite families of the Street: the Platts and the Battersbys. They may have been at each other's throats or otherwise ready to fall to pieces, but what's a soap Christmas without a family bust-up, eh? Leanne's plan to get revenge on her disloyal sister was delicious, and although we're always on the side of David and Shona staying together, we can't deny we were hooked by the mystery of what she got up to on Wednesday night... Meanwhile, you've got classic Corrie callbacks aplenty with Les' funeral, Rowan's on trial, plus there's plenty of Debbie Webster and even a rare Gail appearance... all in all, a lot to sink our teeth into! After Street Talk, it's The Kabin, and we couldn't not discuss the front page news about the reasons behind Sean Wilson's axing. Plus, the Christmas TV schedules are out, so when can we expect to see the festive Street drama over the festive fortnight? We round off the show as always with some of your feedback. Today's podcast covers what went on in Corrie between the 14th and the 18th October 2024 (Episodes #11,387 - 11,392) It's another extra-long show this week, but not because of another lengthy Michael rant about the scheduling - nope, this time it's because we've got a murder mystery on our hands (and unlike the Lauren one back in the Spring, this time somebody's actually been murdered!). Yep, Joel turned up dead in a sack on Monday's visit to Weatherfield, and there are plenty of characters with the motive and the opportunity to have done him in. Did Mason do it as payback for Joel's treatment of Betsy? Did God-fearing Dee-Dee go Old Testament on his arse? Or maybe it's just what at this point seems to be the most obvious suspect, DC Kit Green. There are still plenty of clues still to be revealed in flashbacks, but we try to piece together all the evidence so far. Joel's not the only character we had to wave bye-bye to this week either, as Stu hangs up his whites and heads of for a new life in Germany - and not even Yasmeen seems that bothered by it! We've also got more drama at the Platts (with no sign of Gail!), a trip to A&E for Sam, and yet another 'the Winter-Browns are poor' story. It wasn't all gold, but on the whole, we thought it was a pretty decent week! Up next on the podcast, we take a look at why Shelley King and Julie Hesmondhalgh are teaming up for a good cause, and finish off the show with some of your thoughts on the early ITVX uploads in The Kabin. As the global race to accelerate energy transition efforts intensifies, DRI has gained prominence due to its potential for reducing carbon emissions in energy-intensive sectors like steel. Recognized as a key pathway to 'green steel,' DRI offers various low-carbon steelmaking alternatives. Walking the DRI path is expected to help India's steel industry to lower its emissions. Last week Greg discussed the role of hedge funds and their impact on oil markets in the past year. There has been plenty of hearsay and gossip from within the industry in response to the publishing arm of Onyx Capital Group, namely, The Officials. Host of The Officials and Director of Benchmarking, Jorge Montepeque, joins Group CEO Greg Newman to explain why pushing for greater transparency sparks an old style backlash. For the avoidance of doubt, it's important to note, Onyx Capital Group has autonomously-ran subsidiaries and departments, one of which is a Publisher, which is entirely independent of the trading arm.Evidently, there are a few bad actors who didn't appreciate the transparency our media displays regarding the inner workings of the industry. We received increased scrutiny regarding our transparency on how the oil swap benchmarks are priced. The latest incident was the largest of the PRAs, Platts, contacting Onyx Capital Group directly to complain about these reports, whilst failing to specify which reports or podcasts when asked to do so. This is a legacy or knee jerk industry move. All of Onyx Capital Group's reporting is based on facts, using publicly available information and by exercising freedom of expression. On this episode, Greg digs deeper into this tension, and discusses the challenges of bringing transparency in oil derivative markets to the surface. Jorge Montepeque, the man who built the Platts indices that oil swap contracts price against – and who now runs The Officials at Onyx Capital Advisory joins him. Jorge is no stranger to receiving backlash, bullying and threats from a few bad apples in the oil market and he joins Greg to explain why. #oott #oil #oilandgas #energy #derivatives #trading #trader #podcast #news #economics #finance #markets #marketanalysis #derivativestrading

In case you missed it, WPC24 took place recently in Calgary, Alberta, for the second time in its history. WPC itself was established way back in the 1930s as a forum for the global industry to discuss common themes on a triennial basis. As a global event, it attracts an audience from around the planet.. The voices discussing the global energy industry's challenges included the Energy  Minister from Saudi Arabia, and the CEOs of Saudi Aramco, ExxonMobil, Repsol, WestJet, Accenture, Pertamina, KNOC, Kuwait Petroleum Corp, ONGC, NNPC (Nigeria), NOCK (Kenya), Oil India, and managing directors, presidents, vice presidents, and board chairs from Cenovus, Petronas, Petrobras, Petronet, Suncor, Deloitte, Brookfield, Platts, S&P, Shell, and many others.  You never know who you'll meet at such a gathering. As I ascended the escalator to the event floor for the opening ceremonies, I found myself standing beside a trade ambassador from Libya, who shared some personal details of the immense tragedy stemming from the floods from his country. My fellow panelists hailed from Calgary, Houston, and Saudi Arabia. I have a collection of business cards from Tema (Ghana), St. John's, Midland (Texas), Bogotá (Colombia), Pittsburgh, Berlin, Washington, and Uruguay. Under the broad theme ‘path to net zero', the range of topics under discussion were in equal parts bracing and confronting, taking in supply and demand, energy transition, decarbonization, industry growth and/or decline, financing strategies, infrastructure challenges, energy security, hydrogen developments, carbon capture and storage, net zero pathways, indigenous engagement, and talent issues. It is impossible for one person to summarize the conference because there are multiple parallel tracks, a full poster and paper show, and dozens of talks and panel discussions. You simply can't take it all in. Then again, you can always form a point of view based on the dialogue you did take in, so here's mine.

Earlier this year, the Philadelphia Inquirer broke the news about out-of-county developers seeking to take 1,000 acres of land to build a pumped storage facility along the Susquehanna River near Chanceford Township. The developers, who are based in Reading, Pennsylvania, sought the approval of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to begin the multi-year process of building a massive pumped storage hydroelectric facility. The process would require taking and flooding of many properties, including farmland as well as recreational and historical sites along the Susquehanna River. Joining Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill is Mark Platts, president of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area. Mark discusses the adverse impact of the proposed project along the river. Since the podcast was recorded, FERC rejected the initial application, however, the developers indicated that they will re-apply.

Fuel Oil Update As the fuel oil market exhibits an absence of clear direction, corporate energy traders who rely on fuel oil may find themselves in a difficult situation. With environmental regulations and external factors at play, volatility is becoming a more common occurrence in the industry. This instability brings forth potential risks that can deeply impact businesses and their bottom lines. As a result, devising a strategic approach will be crucial in maneuvering through this tumultuous market. Archie Smith, during the conversation, mentions that the fuel oil market seems to be lacking apparent direction, with things such as OPEC meetings playing a role in market movements. And just what is the Saudi energy minister suggesting?Steel Update The steel market has also been showing signs of instability, partly due to external factors such as the ongoing US debt ceiling talks and Chinese HRC prices taking a hit. This has compelled European HRC prices to remain under pressure as well. Amid such uncertain market conditions, traders must consider mitigating risks through broader adoption of appropriate hedging techniques. Josh Stern shares an update on the steel market and how the European HRC price is affected by Chinese mills targeting Southeast Asian markets. Timestamped summary of this episode: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Fernanda introduces the episode and the topics of discussion, which include the fuel oil market's reaction to U.S. debt ceiling discussions and the upcoming OPEC meeting, as well as updates on the steel market. 00:00:44 - Fuel Oil Update, Archie Smith gives an update on the front sing time spreads, which have been well offered and sold down. He also discusses the low sulfur fuel or cracks and states that the market is lacking direction, but the fuel oil market is sensitive to geopolitical topics. Smith mentions that OPEC may step in again and slash production further than before, and the market is waiting for updates on U.S. debt ceiling talks. 00:07:48 - Steel Update, Josh Stern discusses the recent developments in the HRC space, where European HRC prices continue to be under pressure due to Chinese mills targeting the southeast Asian markets. Stern also talks about a study conducted by his team with Platts, which found scrap and rebar to be viable hedging products for wire rod exposure. More research is being done to find correlations between tradable exchange products and physical markets. 00:10:18 - Conclusion, Fernanda wraps up the episode and reminds listeners to check out the website for more information and show notes.

God, family, and country – in that order. When we lose God in our lives, we lose family, and then we lose our country. The reason we have become a wasteland is because we have allowed the anti-God and anti-family agenda to groom an entire generation into transhumanism. Redefining marriage is a big part of that. We are joined by Bob Vander Platts of the Family Leader, who updates us on the heroes and zeroes in the marriage fight. He explains how GOP leaders have not lifted a finger to fight the bill – and many quietly support it. Nonetheless, there is some good news in that churches have finally stood up and pastors are acting biblically by calling out their Republican senators. Bob believes that COVID helped purge the church of its weakest links and that there is an opportunity for a return to biblical values in a smaller, leaner tent.  Learn more about your ad choices. How's THAT for behind the scenes goss? After that, we return to our usual discussion of the week's episodes, and we're not exactly the biggest Summer and Aaron fans, but if you are, good news! This week, Weatherfield's drippiest couple are back on again after Summer discovers she's up the duff. In fact, that's pretty much all we manage this week - for various reasons, we've had to make this a Street Talk only episode, but it's still a good couple of hours long even so! The main story this week was the big wedding of Fiz and Phill. Many of us had been wondering for a while whether it would actually take place or if she would instead opt for the much anticipated reunion with Tyrone. Well, it turned out to actually be a bit of both - and there are definitely some strongly opposing views on the podcast about that particular outcome! Also this week, Audrey puts the Platts to the test when she reveals she's leaving all her cash to WARTS (excellent callback, by the way!), Steve manages to get himself scammed when he pays for someone to fix his roof, and Spider follows in the footsteps of Wendy and Stephen by coming back for two episodes before disappearing off screen again for a bit - but be certainly loved what little of him we did see!
