Being able to belt out a tune like Adele or Pavarotti is not just about raw talent. The best singers in the world have to work on their technique—like how to control their breath and develop the stamina to hit note after note for a two-hour concert. But pop stars and opera singers aren't the only vocalists who have figured out how to harness their voices for maximum impact.Death metal vocalists also train their voices to hit that unique guttural register. And those iconic screams are not as easy to master as they might seem.Vocal scientists at the University of Utah are now bringing death metal singers into the lab to try to understand how they make their extreme vocalizations. What they're finding is not only insightful for metalheads, but might also help improve treatment for people with some types of vocal injuries.Host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Amanda Stark, speech pathologist and vocology researcher at the University of Utah, and Mark Garrett, vocal coach and lead singer of the band Kardashev.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by Dee Peterschmidt, who also wrote the music. The original segment was produced by Shoshannah Buxbaum. Our show art is illustrated by Abelle Hayford. And support for Science Friday's science and arts coverage comes from the Alfred P. This month, we are anchoring our huddles in the heart of worship—what it means to keep the flame burning. Not just musically, but spiritually. We're not just preparing songs—we're preparing a place for the presence of God to dwell.  You Are Called – You Are a Levite Scripture Reference: 1 Chronicles 23:5-6    •   David appointed 4,000 Levites as musicians to minister before the Lord.   Worship leaders are not just singers or musicians—they are called, set apart, and anointed for ministry.    •   The Levites were chosen to carry the presence of God, just as modern-day worshippers stand before both the people and God. Lessons from David and the Ark of the Covenant: 1. David prepared a place for the Presence of God to rest. 2. The Ark was carried on the shoulders of the Levites—the weight of responsibility was on them. 3. A leader was appointed over the singers and musicians. 4. The Levites stopped every six steps to sacrifice to the Lord, showing the priority of worship.    •   Worship is not a performance; it is a priestly duty, a ministry unto the Lord.    •   David chose a “skillful” worshipper to lead the singers and musicians. 1 Samuel 13:14    •   “The Lord has sought out a man after His own heart.” Impartation:    •   David, though not a Levite, lived as one—his life was marked by worship.    •   He was from the tribe of Judah, which means praise.    •   David's worship was not about talent, but about intimacy with God, shaped by trials, brokenness, and deep love for the Lord.    •   God is seeking worshippers with fully devoted hearts, not just skilled musicians. David's Example of Worship Leadership:    •   David's worship sent demons running—his anointing mattered more than his talent.    •   He raised skillful worshippers, but in Hebrew, “skillful” means “discerning one.”       •   Worship went from “worshiping with all their might” to “discerning worship.”       •   It's not about how good it sounds, but whether it moves the heart of God.       •   Are we more focused on moving crowds than moving Him?    •   Worship leaders should seek God's direction for each set list and service.       •   Ask Him: “Is this what You want from us today?”    •   True worship is about surrender—your heart must bow before your hands play a note or your mouth sings a word.    •   God desires to sit as King on the throne of our hearts. A Worshipper's Heart:    •   A heart after God    •   A heart that chases God    •   A heart that longs for His presence    •   A heart that builds an altar for Him    •   A heart that fears the Lord in awe, honor, and humility  •   Leviticus 6:13 – “The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.”  •   The fire on the altar represents passion, devotion, and commitment to God.    •   In the Old Testament, priests tended to the fire daily—it was never allowed to go out.    •   Worshippers must tend to the fire in their own hearts.       •   If the fire dies in you, it will not ignite in others.    •   Worship is not just about what happens on the platform—it's about a daily life of devotion. Three Ways to Keep the Fire Burning: 1. Daily Surrender & Devotion       •   Spend time in God's presence beyond rehearsals and services.       •   Worship in private before leading in public. 2. Pure Motives & Humility       •   Worship is for God's glory, not ours.       •   Stay humble and keep your heart aligned with why you do what you do. 3. Continual Hunger for His Presence       •   Never settle. Keep pressing in.       •   Stay desperate for more of Him.   •   Worship is more than music—it is a priestly calling and a lifestyle of devotion.   DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THIS PODCAST AND SUBSCRIBE!!

In this episode, we sit down with filmmakers Jack Piatt and David Breschel, the creative forces behind Highway West Entertainment, whose work spans literature, music, and the open road of independent cinema. Their short film The Singers, a haunting and poetic adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's 19th-century story, has been selected for the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, where its timeless themes of memory, art, and loss will find a new audience. Jack and David share how they discovered the story, why it resonated with them today, and what it means to adapt classical literature in a modern cinematic language. We also talk about their powerful documentary I Need You, a heartfelt chronicle of the legendary band America, which was screened to great acclaim at last year's Ojai Film Festival, and also with more recently at the Ojai Playhouse with founding members Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley. With behind-the-scenes access and deep reverence for their enduring legacy, the film captures the band's extraordinary 50+ year journey — from their British-American roots to their emotional farewell tour. Jack and David reflect on the art of telling a band's story with honesty, tenderness, and the kind of nuance that comes only from true fans.In both projects, you'll hear their passion for storytelling—whether through fiction, film, or friendship. And you'll get a glimpse of what it takes to shepherd meaningful, independent work into the world.Tune in for a conversation that travels from 19th-century Russia to the stage lights of the present, with two artists who are helping shape the future of narrative film.We did not talk about the in-migration of Sinaloa Cartel leaders, ghost ships of the Namibian Desert or the declining recruitment into the U.S. armed forces. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Legal reporter Jeremy Sharon and news editor Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Yesterday, the United Nations-linked Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) organization said in a “Special Snapshot” briefing that “the Gaza Strip is still confronted with a critical risk of famine,” and that “the entire population is facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with half a million people [one in five] facing starvation.” Israel has accused IPC of a “lack of transparency” with regards to the source of its data, and it said the IPC’s Special Snapshot failed to take into account “the massive volume of aid, especially food, that entered Gaza during the ceasefire.” Sharon weighs in. Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Tuesday ordered the military to begin sending conscription orders to all draft-age members of the ultra-Orthodox community at the start of the next recruitment cycle in July. How much authority does she have and will anything change? What they're finding is not only insightful for metalheads, but might also help improve treatment for people with some types of vocal injuries. Host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Amanda Stark, speech pathologist and vocology researcher at the University of Utah, and Mark Garrett, vocal coach and lead singer of the band Kardashev.Read the whole story at sciencefriday.com.Also, we share a follow-up to our story about seasonal allergies based on a listener's question about her family's allergies.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.   Subscribe to this podcast. We love an encore! And this one's got it all: audition trends, futurecasting, and pragmatic advice for young opera talent. Key Change co-hosts Anna Garcia and Olga Perez Flora also serve up plenty of musical memories, behind-the-scenes intel, and a little love for the Santa Fe Opera as a venue as they continue their visit with Chandler Johnson. When we last met Chandler, he had introduced us to career paths less traveled. "There's more to this business than just singing,” he continues. Chandler knows this truth better than most. After discovering opera in his early teens, he pivoted from singing to arts administration. Chandler credits his years spent auditioning and performing for exposing him to career opportunities beyond the stage.  “Singing was my path to get to this place,” he confides, before launching into an impressive list of creative, collaborative opportunities within the opera ecosystem. "You can go into development, marketing and PR, media and AV. You can go into costuming and set design," he says, adding, "Having the experience of being a singer informs where you pivot in your life and in this art form." As for the art form in question, Chandler is not one to tinker with what works. "I wouldn't change anything about opera. I truly love the glitz, the glamor, the opulence, the stories, the chaos. I love it all!" he muses before offering one final piece of advice. "We just have to keep doing good art––keep doing good opera!––and the people will come."  KEY CHANGE RECOMMENDED PLAYLIST Taking Care of the Art with Chandler Johnson What's Opera to a Bunch of High School Students? This is the second part of an episode begun last week featuring the cream of the crop of today's young artists. As with the performers heard last week, they represent the finest opera and classical singers working today; it is my distinct pleasure (and honor) to present them to you. They include sopranos Francesca Pia Vitale and Ewa Płonka; mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor; countertenors John Holiday, Key'mon Murrah, and Reginald Mobley (pictured); tenors Laurence Kilsby and Zachary Wilder; baritones Artur Ruciński and Theo Hoffman; and bass-baritones Philippe Sly, Joseph Parrish, and Georg Zeppenfeld in repertoire ranging from Monteverdi and Vivaldi to Rebecca Clarke, Hall Johnson, and Paul McCartney. It has been my pleasure to hear many of these singers live and I look forward to hearing them all again in person (and as soon as possible!) Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists.
