Red cards and national anthem flops! Despite South Africa's win, this past weekend's match against Italy was riddled with controversy. Breakfast with Martin Bester also spoke to former Springbok rugby public relations manager Annelee Murray about how exactly it works to get a singer to perform the national anthem.

Seems like every day another performer has said the wrong thing or done the wrong thing. And if we like them, that's just more spice in the sauce. And if we don't, we just hate them even more. But the controversy wheel just keeps on spinning, regardless of how you feel. It could be a manufactured scandal, like a diss track, or something out of control, like an act of violence. Sometimes it's hard to know if it was planned or not - you know, like when one singer pulls the top off another singer during the Super Bowl halftime show. On this week's episode of "How We Heard It," your hosts spin through some of the biggest and some of the strangest controversies ignited by musicians, either by design or by accident. They poke through scandals from recent years and look back at some from decades ago to see how they hold up now. For example, most of Madonna's shenanigans from the 1980s seem rather tame by today's standards. But on the flipside, you might be surprised (and disappointed) to learn how many of your favorite singers from classic rock days were routinely sleeping with underage fans ... and how it generated relatively little concern back then. Your hosts also look at the current social environment and how performers are forced into controversy against their will and how stars are no longer allowed to be neutral about issues. This is why Taylor Swift couldn't be another Dolly Parton, even if she tried. (Why is everybody always mad about everything all the time?) So join us and find out if your favorite singers have been naughty or nice ... and if it changes how you feel about them, for better or worse.

"Video may have killed the radio star but streaming and individual choices in music killed the video. Paramount Global has begun shutting down Mtv channels in Europe and reports are that soon it will come to the United States. Mtv is 44 and it looks like it may not make it to 45. "
In this episode, Alexa is joined by Becky Morton, Principal of Further Education at ACM, to explore what the FE academic route can offer young singers stepping into today's music industry. Becky shares how the curriculum is structured with project-based training, and how this helps students to build both industry awareness and artistic identity from the age of sixteen. The pair dig into why early professional habits matter, how the diploma pathway compares to traditional A-levels, and what young performers gain from learning to work with producers, bands and music businesses in a real-world environment. Becky also talks about current vocal trends, the technical demands of pop-rock singing, and how ACM is adapting its teaching to industry changes, including the rise of AI. Morrissey and Marr both wrote memoirs but Mike Joyce hasn't read either, preferring to publish ‘The Drums', his version of one of the great success stories of the ‘80s, a book about “the beauty we'd given to people – and to ourselves”. At one point he and Andy Rourke shout, ‘Where did it all go right?”. He looks back here at … … the fateful meeting in Geales fish bar when Johnny told them he was leaving – “none of us, not even Morrissey, saw it coming” … the first Smiths rehearsal and impressions of “Steve” the singer … how the songs were written - “we never asked what they meant” … and how they were arranged: “I locked with Johnny like Charlie with Keith, and Andy played a bass song over the top” ... memories of Johnny at X Clothes in Manchester and Morrissey in ‘82 - “funny, dark, so Manc” … the “almost anti-punk” appeal of the Buzzcocks and the urge for a John Maher red Premier drumkit … “Morrissey's articulacy was both his strength and his Achilles heel” … echoes of Motown and James Honeyman-Scott in Marr's guitar … “Singers need to feel they're the most important person in the room” … on-stage gladioli versus “the austerity of the Hacienda” … and Morrissey today - “very angry” - and the legacy of the Smiths. When we're listening to music, most of us tend to focus on the singer. And why not? Singers spell it out for us. They give us a human voice, and the words, to understand the meaning of songs. But we don't always need someone holding our hand and walking us through a song. Sometimes the lyrics are trite and the vocals are lame. With instrumentals, you get to choose your own adventure. You can feel the music and define the meaning to suit yourself. Without all those words getting in the way, you can be absorbed into the sonic wonderland of a song and come up with feelings that you tailor for yourself. This week your "How We Heard It" hosts explore the beauty of instrumental music and the freedom it gives its listeners, whether they just need background noise to clean house or they need to focus without distraction. Instrumentals are more common in some genres - such as classical, jazz and bluegrass - but they exist in all forms, be it on soundtracks, in lounges or at nightclubs. And your hosts even drift into altered-state uses of instrumental music - like if you're trying to sink into a meditative sleep or even astral project. So, buckle in and let them take you away.

"The number changes, but as of the writing of this description, only 1883 songs have topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart including all its earlier versions. This week back in 1990, the first rap song topped the chart. That got me wondering how many other firsts and other interesting facts surround the top spot. Here is a list."
A deep dive into the meaning and significations of the fifth house in astrology, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim, in episode 506 of The Astrology Podcast. This is the fifth installment in our ongoing series on the significations of the 12 houses, where we explore the meanings of each house in detail, going back to the earliest sources and conceptualizations in the astrological tradition. Our discussion on the fifth house will be broken into three parts, and in this initial episode, we focus on providing a comprehensive overview of its core significations and meanings. We begin by establishing the conceptual foundations for the meaning of the fifth house, which was known in ancient astrology as the Place of Good Fortune. Some of the principles we use to derive its meaning are the fact that it is a succedent house that follows the fourth, its positive trine aspect to the Ascendant, and the fact that Venus has her joy there. These concepts establish the fifth house as a place of bodily pleasures, the continuation of the family lineage, and generally positive and fortunate circumstances. The core significations of the fifth house that we explore in detail include: children, good fortune, pleasure and enjoyment, sex and sexuality, and creativity. This episode provides a detailed survey of the topics associated with the fifth house, drawing on both the traditional textual sources as well as our extensive research of hundreds of birth charts. In part two of this series, we will begin looking at some of these example charts in detail, starting with the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house. Then in part three, we will look at the ruler of the fifth house in each of the 12 houses. In part 2 of our series on the 5th house in astrology we look at examples of famous people that have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in their birth chart, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim of The Astrology Podcast. The fifth house is traditionally associated with a wide range of topics in astrology such as children, creativity, pleasure, romance, sex and sexuality, games, and good fortune. In ancient astrology, the Ascendant was sometimes called the helm of the ship of the native's life, and the ruler of the Ascendant was said to be the captain. The house where the captain of the chart is located can tell you a lot about where the life is being directed, and in this episode we explore what happens when the life is directed towards the topics of the fifth house. Over the course of the episode, we explore more than 50 example charts of famous people who have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in order to demonstrate how this placement can play out in a number of different ways. Some of the charts we look at include those of actors, directors, musicians, comedians, athletes, writers, artists, and more. Through this survey, we are able to see many different concrete manifestations of the fifth house archetype, and develop a more well-rounded and grounded understanding of its meaning. This is the second of a three-part series on the fifth house, which is itself part of our larger series where I've been doing a deep dive on the twelve houses in astrology. In the next episode in this series we will explore the meaning of the ruler of the fifth house in each of the twelve houses, showing how the topics of the fifth house can be exported into other areas of a person's life. He dazzled with a beautiful acappella for the anime NO.6, he was dazzling everyone performing live songs from the Prince of Tennis character song series, he was impressing everyone for Rejet's Wolves Saga character song CDs. He was on par with Mamoru Miyano and KISHOW in his prime, before a health scare pushed him away from singing for years to focus on recovery after a particulary sensitive procedure to his vocal chords. In this episode, join me as I revisit what made Hosoya Yoshimasa, my favorite singer among male seiyuu in the early 2010's and how I believe he was bound to get a solo debut and that, today, he'd be the face of aoppella?!.This is an unscripted episode of the podcast.
"The NOW CDs, as they are often called, started in the UK in 1998 with Richard Branson. They were a hit out of the gate, each crafted to a specific formula. They are a professionally made mix tape. We have the full history and a good bit of trivia about the series."
“It's hard to focus on anything educationally if certain basic needs aren't being met, so you're trying to navigate and be proactive as much as possible. I have students who have their own needs and things they're going through that are influencing the classroom. Every year, every group, it's a different dynamic. Every student in this group deserves the opportunity to have a good experience with this. Now, they've got to buy in a little bit. They've got to own their piece of it. You can't do it all for them, but they all deserve the opportunity to succeed in that class."Philip Brown is the director of vocal music at Liberty High School. Additionally he looks forward to collaborations and projects with the Allegro Youth Choirs of Kansas City.
