Lauryn Kay joined Charleston Jazz as Director of Development in March 2026, bringing with her a genuine love for the Lowcountry's arts and culture community and a unique perspective as both a fundraiser and a performer. She is drawn to relationship-driven partnerships built on shared purpose and is passionate about the power of authentic connection and empowering young leaders to explore their passions in the workforce. Prior to joining Charleston Jazz, Lauryn led fundraising efforts at Charleston Stage, the theatre company in residence at the historic Dock Street Theatre. There, she strengthened existing and cultivated new donor relationships, increased institutional support by 56%, launched a young professionals group, and co-designed new stewardship initiatives to further engage supporters. As a mezzo soprano, Lauryn performs regularly with Charleston Opera Theater, The King's Counterpoint, and the Singers of Summerville, and serves as a staff singer at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. She has appeared in a wide range of operas and musicals and has performed internationally in France, England, Spain, Hungary, and Vienna. Lauryn holds a Bachelor's Degree from Charleston Southern University and a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Florida. In her downtime, Lauryn enjoys baking, walking the Ravenel, exploring downtown restaurants, relaxing at the beach, and supporting Charleston's vibrant arts scene by attending as many live performances as she can.

“Twinkle, twinkle, little star” might not seem like an especially romantic song. Apparently, though, it works for male leopard seals. During the mating season, East Antarctic leopard seals sing underwater for hours on end. The songs resemble the structure of children's nursery rhymes. Leopard seals are named for the leopard-like spots on their coats. An adult male weighs about 700 pounds. Much of a seal's diet consists of organisms known as krill. But they also eat penguins, fish, squid, and even the pups of other seal species. The seals mate during the southern-hemisphere spring and summer. But the animals are widely spread, so finding a partner isn't easy. And that's where the songs come in. The songs are made of five patterns—like five musical notes. Every seal puts those notes together in his own way. So every male seal has a unique tune. During mating season, they belt out that tune for up to 13 hours a day. They sing for several minutes, pop to the surface for a breath, then head down for another verse. Scientists in Australia have been listening to seals in Antarctica since the 1990s. In a recent study, they compared the structure of the songs to several types of human music. The best match was to children's songs based on nursery rhymes. They're simple, repetitive, and easy to remember. Under water, the tunes can carry a long way. So a seal may attract a distant mate by constantly crooning his own lullaby. Claire Valdez (Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo) is a member of the New York Assembly running for a seat in Congress. She's also a proud Democratic Socialist, a progressive wing of the party gaining ground in the success of elected leaders like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, U.S. Rep.
