"I am a runner, so the sounds of people cheering runners instantly makes me smile. I initially thought I would use the a capella singing more than the cheering, but it would up being quite difficult to integrate any of the complex harmonies of that singing with any coherent musical ideas that I might introduce, so I would up focusing on the cheering. "Once I found the samples I wanted to use, I wrote some music to accompany those samples, but later dispensed with all that and created pitched down samples to use for the off-kilter sustained bed throughout most of the track. All the sounds in the song have been sourced from the field recording, with the exception of a couple of the drums and the bass. Most of the percussion was actually sourced from the recording as well. "I kind of doubt they are actually shouting "Give Me Your Toes", but that's what I hear, and it seems like a good name for a track about runners."Singers cheering on Oslo marathon runners reimagined by Tristan Watkins.

Today's episode is all about The Twinks vs. Dolls Olympics, a gnarly, nasty, and very queer competition that's taken New York—and the world—by storm. Twinks vs. Dolls was created in 2022 by the Brooklyn gay bar Singers; videos of the lube wrestling and cigarette smoking contests from that year went viral. Since then, it's exploded in size and notoriety and similar queer physical contests have sprung up all across the country. It has become indicative of a larger societal and financial concern that is leading to people not being able to attend live music. We will explain."

When weather-related disasters occur, communities are affected in uncountable ways. We know all too well how climate disasters physically impact communities. Events like hurricanes and wild fires can destroy property, devastate the landscape, and claim lives. What might be less obvious is how a community's cultural practices are affected. When Hurricane Helene tore through western North Carolina in September of 2024, one group of ballad singers felt the effect of the storm on their tradition.

Sam Davis on Making Oscar-Nominated Short ‘The Singers' Without a Script, Casting Viral Buskers, and Shooting on Film On Get Reelisms podcast episode 187, filmmakers Adam Chase Rani and Christine Chen interview Los Angeles–based filmmaker Sam Davis, who is campaigning his live-action short The Singers, nominated for an Academy Award and streaming on Netflix. Davis traces the project back 3–3.5 years to reading a George Saunders breakdown of a Russian short story, then adapting it into a modern bar-set film starring first-time actors found on social media, which took about 18 months to cast due to scam concerns and trust-building. He describes a documentary-influenced, unscripted approach with long improvised takes, constant sound recording, layered audio, and shooting on 35mm film for intentionality, while noting the costs of film and travel. The four-day shoot faced setbacks, including a lead dropping out two days prior.
