Today we celebrate 350 episodes of Countermelody since the inception of the podcast in the fall of 2019. Given that this is a momentous occasion (probably mostly to me, just for sticking with this thing!), I wanted to do something special today. For some time I have been promising an episode on Young Singers I Admire. This is different than the usual Countermelody fare because I almost always focus on great singers of the past. The world of the “opera singer” is very different today than when I was trying to carve out a professional career as a countertenor more than 30 years ago. I would say the huge difference is the way that social media has become such a prominent tool in shaping and maintaining a career. Even today, however, it is possible to do both of these things, to be a singer primarily focused on her technique and expressing the integrity of the music, as well as focusing on their marketing and their identity, whether that be queerness, Blackness, glamour, physical fitness, or whatever. Every single singer I feature today displays a solid and viable vocal technique and a profound connection to the music that they are singing while also, in most cases, deftly managing their online presence. Listen to these young singers and see if you don't agree: sopranos Lisette Oropesa, Sabine Devieilhe, Nicole Car, and Vera-Lotte Böcker; contralto Jasmin White; mezzo-soprano Rachael Wilson; baritone Huw Montague Rendall; and countertenor Maayan Licht. Midway through constructing this episode, I realized that I had enough material for two episodes, so a pendant to this episode will be published next Easter Monday. It thrills me to celebrate these young artists: all possessors of gorgeous voices, fine technique, superb communicative powers, and a much, much better sense of entrepreneurship than I ever had! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Send us a textWe're bringing you two SXSW 2025 short films that we absolutely loved! The Singers takes place in a lonely dive bar where an impromptu sing-off will determine the best singer in town. Director Sam A. Davis shares what inspired him to adapt this short story into film, casting first time actors via viral videos on social media, and our shared connection through art and vulnerability.I'm the Most Racist Person I Know tells the story of Lali who ends up on a date with another woman of color for the first time, and it forces her to face hidden prejudices. We were joined by director/writer Leela Varghese, producer Suriyna Sivashanker, and actors Shabana Azeez (return guest from the film Birdeater) and Kavitha Anandasivam to talk representation, internalized racism, and why they fought to keep the title. The show runs through May 25. Visitors can enter the gallery by calling or buzzing the office, open Thursdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A poetry and potluck event will be held May 18.Mojsilov explains that Degener's work highlights endangered plant species. The exhibition includes 18 framed handmade paper works, with pulp manipulated to form plant imagery. Eight handmade planters, constructed from up-cycled wood, spell out “in danger.” Suspended discs depicting endangered plants, made from frozen paper, gradually melt into the planters, which are seeded with native flowers that will grow over the exhibit's duration.Krug said: I could go on and on about Amanda's artwork, because she's part scientist. She's a chemist. She researches all her subjects to the T. She's a specialist in handmade paper and the history of handmade paper, she collects fibers from all over the world.— Ilene Krug MojsilovA 21st Century Take on Theater of the AbsurdTheater maker Harry Waters, Jr. attended the opening night of Pangea World Theater's staging of “Rhinoceros,” directed by Dipankar Mukherjee. The absurdist play by French playwright Eugène Ionesco was written in 1958 and follows the transformation of a town's residents into rhinoceroses — all except one, the least heroic character. The show runs through April 19 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.Waters praised the production's creativity: inventive lighting, a soundscape of Indigenous music, strong choreography and a diverse cast of professional and amateur actors.Harry said: The gift, I would have to say, of what Dipankar gives to this adaptation [is] that it starts huge, and then, as the story goes, it winnows down to this very simple, important issue of the one human being that's standing in resistance to all the totalitarianism and the conformity ... how are we also taking our own stands in spite of everything that's being thrown [at us] that really allows us to know that we're not crazy, that it is not insane that you're standing strong. So that's a conceptual thing that I was really quite pleased to see without being beaten over the head by it.— Harry Waters, Jr.A Multimedia Symphony in the South MetroRetired attorney and former St. Olaf Choir singer Maren Swanson of Burnsville is excited for a joint choral performance at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake this Saturday at 4 p.m. South Metro Chorale will perform alongside Singers in Accord and Kantorei, with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Saltzman Romey. The concert features “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” a multimedia symphony by Minnesota composer Jocelyn Hagen.Maren said: I heard Jocelyn speak once about having grown up in a musical family in a small town in North Dakota, and about singing and playing piano from the age of three, she said that she lay in bed as a as an older child, hearing orchestral music in her head and wishing she knew how to write the music down. Well now we get to hear the enchanting music in her head. The work has been performed all across the country and internationally. I actually heard it in Croatia in 2023. The libretto features an English translation of select texts from the notebooks of Da Vinci. The score is soaring, sometimes lyrical, sometimes percussive, always gorgeous. The video uses a new technology that allows it to be synced to the nuances of the music as conducted in a live event. In effect, the video is played like an instrument of the orchestra responding to the conductor, and so every performance is spontaneous and unique. The video features an unfolding of text and images from the notebooks and other animated images that bring the music to life.— Maren Swanson

“I want students to function in a studio recording session and a live performance, which are very, very different worlds. I want them to be able to do not just jazz, not just classical, not just gospel, but everything so that they can be hired to sing backgrounds for Beyoncé one day and the next day be singing with Andrea Bocelli on tour. I try to give them the most well-rounded experience I can.”A native of Holguín, Cuba, Cindy Ellis immigrated to the United States in 2005. She earned her Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and Jazz Voice from Florida International University and her Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri. Her middle school and high school ensembles have been featured at numerous venues throughout the country. In 2022, Mrs. Ellis' students performed in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas, a meeting hosted by President Joe Biden that brought together 40 Presidents and leaders from the Americas and Caribbean. Additionally, in the last 7 years, the students have recorded and performed background vocals for Gloria and Emilio Estefan and several music award shows including the AMAs, Latin American Music Awards and the Latin GRAMMY Awards. In 2024 Mrs. Ellis conducted her students at the Miami show of Jacob Collier's DJESSE Volume 4 World Tour. A lot of people that we now call stars, were once background singers and backup dancers. If you listen to some of your favorite songs or watch some videos you'll recognize some voices and faces that you may have never noticed before. But not all of these stories have a superstar ending. A lot of people were able to carve out solid and recognizable careers, even if they weren't household names. You definitely remember them, though. That's what we're discussing on this episode, some of your favorite hook singers like Tammy Lucas, Vinia Mojica and LaToiya Williams, as well as video and tour dancers like Oaktown's .357 (MC Hammer), Str8 Ahead (Bell Biv DeVoe) and Hot Dog (Chubb Rock). "There are a lot of songs that have famous people in their titles. We wanted to know who some of the lesser known people named in titles are. The internet did not disappoint. We have a good long list."
Singers and groups have always been inspired by the music that came before them. In the 80s, many of these artists found key success by recording other bands or songwriters material or what is called a Cover. So why do musicians cover songs instead of writing their own? Well a variety of reasons as it turns out, tribute to influences, reaching a wider audience, live performance appeal, TV and film soundtracks, being directed by a studio or simply wanting to share a song that they may love. This week Dave and Rob look at some monster 80s songs that turned out, to their surprise, to be covers of previously recorded material. They'll go through the background and where the songs came from, and ultimately decide if the cover or the original was better. Ultimately, covering a song allows artists to connect with their audience in a whole different way, and sometimes propel them into superstardom. Whether through nostalgia or reinvention, covers can make us remember back to a song we liked, and allow us to like it even more as one of our favorite bands or singers re-records it. Are you a singer who wants to make your own music and explore songwriting as a creative outlet? Do you feel like you have songs inside of you, but you're struggling to get them out for one reason or another? Singing other people's music is great and everything, but you have your own stories, your own experiences, your own feelings and emotions and concepts that you want to bring to life through music. And you want to do it in your own unique voice, with your own artistic style. But where to begin with all the moving pieces... the musical skills, the words, playing an instrument, the vocal style, the whole production of putting all these things together into a cohesive work of art? Or maybe for you, it's not so much the “how,” but all the other creative blocks that seem to get in the way. The resistance. The inner critic. The everyday life stuff... Well in this episode, we're going to get into all of that as I lay out 5 common roadblocks singers have to writing their own music and singing their own songs. But not only that ~ we'll also bust through each obstacle one by one so you can get to the freedom and joy that come with creating something of your own and expressing what's on your heart.

There are seasons of the vocal journey when we step away from the stage, lean into the silence, and spend some time away ~ whether we're seemingly forced into it or we intentionally choose to take a break from performing. And sometimes we even shut down our voice and stop singing altogether ~ I've been there. If you've been in such a season, it can feel a bit intimidating to get back into it and start sharing your voice again. Maybe you're thinking... I'm so rusty, my voice is out of shape, I feel like I've reverted and lost my confidence, I don't even know if I've still got it… Deep breath… Ease your mind because in this episode, I'll be taking you step by step through the planning, preparation, practice, and performance phases of the process, offering tips for each stage as you get back out there, start singing for audiences, and take that initial step towards sharing your voice again ~ with ease, and joy, and peace. I pray these 4 tips will help encourage you to go out there and just get that first performance under your belt ~ and help you ease back into it with peace and JOY. You can sing again.

Senior Curator of Film at the Museum of the Moving Image, Eric Hynes, is my guest in the first segment. Eric and I discuss the Museum's upcoming First Look festival to take place Wednesday, March 12th through Sunday, March 16th. First Look, MoMI's annual festival showcasing adventurous new cinema, returns for its 14th edition, offering a diverse slate of major New York premieres, work-in-progress screenings and sessions, gallery installations, and fresh perspectives on the art and process of filmmaking. This year's festival introduces New York audiences to more than three dozen works from around the world, encompassing feature and short films; fiction and nonfiction; performances and experiments. The guiding ethos of First Look is openness, curiosity, discovery, aiming to expose audiences to new art, artists to new audiences, and everyone to different methods, perspectives, interrogations, and encounters. For five consecutive days the festival takes over MoMI's two theaters, as well as other rooms and galleries throughout the Museum—with in-person appearances and dialogue integral to the experience. Each night concludes with one of five selected Showcase Screenings in MoMI's Sumner Redstone Theater. In my segment I am joined by the film producer Jack Piatt and singer songwriter journeyman Chris Smither. They are part of the team behind a new short film, "The Singers" which premieres this weekend at SxSW. "The Singers" is a genre-bending film adaptation of a 19th-century short story written by Ivan Turgenev, in which a lowly pub full of downtrodden men connect unexpectedly through an impromptu sing-off. The film explores the complexities of masculinity and the power of vulnerability through art. Chris Smither makes his acting debut in this film directed by Sam Davis.
