On this week's episode of Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity, host & producer George Sirois sits down with the guest of honor for this weekend's Archon 48 Convention in Collinsville, Illinois, acclaimed author & producer Melinda M Snodgrass. After several years working in law, Melinda took a chance on herself and started writing. This resulted in the Star Trek novel "The Tears of the Singers," and in the next several years, Melinda would work with her friend / fellow author George R.R. Martin and their anthology series "Wild Cards," and write a spec script for Star Trek: The Next Generation that would not only become the widely acclaimed episode "The Measure of a Man," but would also bring her into the writers' room as a Story Editor for nearly two seasons. This would only be the beginning of Melinda's vast creative journey, which would take her to other television series, more books, and the silver screen. Check out all of Melinda's works on her website - including "The High Ground" and "Lucifer's War," the first installments of the Imperials series and the Carolingian series - by clicking HERE.Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity exists primarily as a platform for creatives of all kinds (authors, filmmakers, stand-up comics, musicians, voice artists, painters, podcasters, etc) to share their journeys to personal success. On this episode of Metalology, the hosts (Anthony, Jandro, Rudy, and Alberto) talk about one of the most original metal and rock acts of our generation, the mighty Mastodon. In remembrance of former vocalist/guitarist Brent Hinds, Metalology picks a song from each album to showcase Mastodon's evolution, the insane talent each member had, Brent Hind's original approach to songwriting and his criminally underappreciated vocal talents. Today, we not only celebrate Brent Hind's artistry but the impact Mastodon has had on modern metal and the importance of being yourself.

In part 2 of our series on the 5th house in astrology we look at examples of famous people that have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in their birth chart, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim. The fifth house is traditionally associated with a wide range of topics in astrology such as children, creativity, pleasure, romance, sex and sexuality, games, and good fortune. In ancient astrology, the Ascendant was sometimes called the helm of the ship of the native's life, and the ruler of the Ascendant was said to be the captain. The house where the captain of the chart is located can tell you a lot about where the life is being directed, and in this episode we explore what happens when the life is directed towards the topics of the fifth house. Over the course of the episode, we explore more than 50 example charts of famous people who have the ruler of the Ascendant in the fifth house in order to demonstrate how this placement can play out in a number of different ways. Some of the charts we look at include those of actors, directors, musicians, comedians, athletes, writers, artists, and more. Through this survey, we are able to see many different concrete manifestations of the fifth house archetype, and develop a more well-rounded and grounded understanding of its meaning. This is the second of a three-part series on the fifth house, which is itself part of our larger series where I've been doing a deep dive on the twelve houses in astrology. In the next episode in this series we will explore the meaning of the ruler of the fifth house in each of the twelve houses, showing how the topics of the fifth house can be exported into other areas of a person's life. This is episode 507 of The Astrology Podcast. “I ask them to sing with maximum efficiency, accessing their singer's formant, and from there, we'll ask for specific sounds. Sometimes conductors get stuck asking them to blend, to listen. When we do that, it's like giving them an 8-pack of Crayola and asking them to color. Instead, we start the rehearsal with a 64-pack and then throughout the rehearsal we might pick out the light blue #2 to color that section of the music. They're able to access the full breadth of their vocal powers in the rehearsal.”Francis Cathlina, D.M.A. (he/him) is a Vietnamese-American conductor and educator, renowned for his innovative approach to choral music. His concerts invite audiences into a world where choral artistry becomes a powerful storytelling medium.Dr. Cathlina is currently the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Memphis, where he received the 2025 Dean's Award for Creative Achievement. He oversees the Choral Area, leads the MM/DMA Choral Conducting program, and conducts the University Singers.A two-time GRAMMY-nominated educator, Dr. Cathlina draws deeply from his Eastern heritage. His work reflects a commitment to excellence and collaboration. In 2025, he will serve on the conducting faculty for Brazil's FIMUS Festival and work in the Philippines as part of ACDA's International Conductors Exchange Program. Early recognition came from the Texas Choral Directors Association (TCDA), which named him a “Young Director of Distinction.”Cathlina's teaching philosophy centers on developing masterful technicians, expressive communicators, and thoughtful citizens. Under his direction, the UofM University Singers have been invited to perform for national conferences. Recent engagements involve All-State choirs in Mississippi and Kentucky, the International Mu Phi Convention Chorus, and a Carnegie Hall debut. Dr. Cathlina's research focuses on choral tone and conducting gesture. He has presented over 69 sessions worldwide. He is published in international journals. In 2025, he served as the Headliner for the Ohio and Alabama choral conferences. In 2023, he co-led Conducting Masterclasses in Greece with the University of Macedonia and Ionian University.Dr. Cathlina earned a DMA in conducting with a vocal pedagogy cognate from the University of North Texas, an MM from Michigan State University, and a BME from Baylor University. This week, "How We Heard It" pivots to men singers, going back in time to crooners like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and country legends like Hank Williams and George Jones. From there, the hosts come forward, breezing through classic singer-songwriters like Jim Croce and James Taylor, R&B pioneers such as Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, and all manner of rock singers, including Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury, while pausing to engage in the inevitable Paul McCartney vs. John Lennon debate. The 1980s and 1990s are represented by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Sting, Robert Palmer, Michael Hutchence, Trent Reznor, Vince Gill and Randy Travis. And today's stars are also evaluated, including Post Malone, The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Benson Boone and John Legend. Singers often make or break a song. The exceptional ones can lift a bland arrangement into the stratosphere and the mundane ones can sink a great arrangement like a torpedo. This week the "How We Heard It" guys take a look at women vocalists (men singers will come next week), from the clear-voiced vocalists with perfect enunciation to soul singers who use a ragged edge to add personality. Some are belters, some practically whisper, some float into the atmosphere, and some are Bjork. But the differences between artists are pronounced, even in the sub-categories. Find out why Karen Carpenter hits differently than Barbra Streisand, how Tina Turner persevered, what sets Debbie Harry apart, where Sheryl Crow lands and how Billie Eilish factors in. And the guys are not on the same page on many of these vocalists, from Janis Joplin to Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush to Whitney Houston to Mariah Carey. Some of these women only seem better the more you explore their work, while others don't hold up to a closer listen. Your hosts dovetail, dissent and then dovetail again as they explore women singers from today, yesterday and long ago.
