"The machine's just going to come back with 'Rephrase' or 'Express in other words.'" Jacques Ellul argued that the technological society "requires predictability and, no less, exactness of prediction. It is necessary, then, that technique prevail over the human being ...The individual must be fashioned by techniques." Condor's inability to arrive on time, mocking description of trust as "a problem," and disinclination "to go through channels" — as Dr. Lappe complains — suggests his refusal to be interpellated within the CIA's occupational culture, to be "fashioned by techniques." Though the CIA front at which Condor works is called the American Literary Historical Society (ALHS) and suggests the work of academics of the type that staffed the OSS during World War II, the omnipresence of communications and computational technologies in the mise en scène argues against the ALHS's use of hermeneutic analyses. The implied need to encode plot details into previously established terminology suggests that whatever Condor and his colleagues are doing at the ALHS, it is not literary interpretation in the traditional senses of the term. ELLUL 3 CAUGHT IN THE BRANCHES
This evening we examine the difficult Mitzvah of following the Halachic ruling of your rabbi, even when he is wrong. When does this apply and when does it not apply. We explain the distinction between a dispute of east v. west, and a dispute between right v. left. We use the example of Rav Herschel Schachter and how he approached dealing with myriad questions during covid. Then we trace the single theme of the entire variegated High Holiday season, with its multiple Holidays, distinct Mitzvot and moods, all encapsulated in Psalm 27, the roadmap from Ellul to Shmini Atzeret, and where we hope to arrive at the completion. ELLUL 2 - L'DAVID SELF REFLECT
This morning we review the subject in our Torah portion of Ir Miklat - cities of refuge. We explore an understanding from Sivan Rahav Meir that the month of of Ellul, the month of preparation for the High Holidays, is a type of place of refuge for us to rehabilitate ourselves. We have the opportunity to reflect on mistakes we have made, and how to correct them. The key is to surround ourselves with people who encourage us be better and to be in places that inspire us to be better, as we are so affected by where and with whom we are. This morning we discuss the two roles Shofar serves; one on Rosh Hashanah, and the other starting today during the month of Ellul. This morning we share a spiritual and emotional roadmap of the next seven weeks through Ellul and the High Holidays. Based on a lecture by Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg, we distinguish between the requirement to believe in the coming of Moshiach and the independent requirement to await anxiously that arrival. With this we understand the purpose of the month of Ellul, and how it unfolds into Rosh Hashanah and the rest. This morning we learn from the Rebbe of Sedigura the meaning of Re'eh (See - the first word in our Torah portion) which stands for "Today we announce the Month of Ellul." The month of Ellul is a gift from God to allow us to prepare ourselves for Rosh Hashanah. At the same time, when this announcement is made, it should send a chill through us as we realize the approach of the Days of Awe. Three days before the WBCQ shortwave debut, the freshly rebranded Toddzilla X-Pod returns to its roots with a brutal, updated dissection of media literacy, mass manipulation, and ideological self-delusion. In this special Escaping the Cave edition, Todd revisits his foundational 2018 thesis—"It's the People"—with sharper insight and seven more years of watching the informational apocalypse unfold. From Bernays to Ellul, Le Bon to Lippmann, this episode connects propaganda history to today's dopamine-driven mobthink and the collapse of objective truth. Todd explores how media isn't simply broken—it's perfectly optimized to feed a tribal, narrative-addicted public. And if you're still blaming "the media" without examining your own complicity? You're part of the problem. Also discussed: sociological propaganda, algorithmic conformity, the myth of ideological autonomy, integration vs. agitation propaganda, the digital crowd, and the psychological toll of drowning in data without the tools to convert it into wisdom. Recorded in Southwest Michigan. Blasting worldwide beginning Monday! Like it? Rate, review, and share it? Hate it? Embrace equity! Listen anyhow! On this episode of The Courtenay Turner Podcast, Courtenay welcomes Matthew Raymer—founder of ContentSafe—for a deep dive into the tangled intersections of propaganda, technology, and freedom of speech. Raymer, whose company ContentSafe specializes in protecting creators from deplatforming and shadowbanning, brings firsthand experience from the front lines of digital censorship. As a technologist and advocate for decentralization, his work with the Anti-Censorship Technical Committee centers on supporting privacy and anti-censorship projects to ensure open discourse in a world increasingly threatened by digital suppression. The episode explores the enduring relevance of Jacques Ellul, author of Propaganda: The Formation of Men's Attitudes, who argued that propaganda is not just about lies or overt manipulation, but about shaping perceptions and behavior through the integration of individuals into mass society, often using technology as its primary vehicle. Expect a nuanced discussion of Ellul's theories—how propaganda works both psychologically and sociologically, and how it leverages technology to mold both individuals and the collective consciousness. From there, the conversation widens to examine the uneasy relationship between science, religion, and technology in the age of technocracy. How does the advance of artificial intelligence threaten or enhance religious freedom and individual rights? Recent research suggests that AI and increased digitalization can negatively impact religious liberties and reshape social norms, raising urgent questions about the ethical and political implications of rapid technological change. Raymer and Turner won't shy away from the most taboo and controversial subjects—those very topics that often trigger shadowbans and algorithmic suppression. They'll dissect the geopolitics of censorship, the rise of authoritarian and democratic models of AI, and the ongoing struggle to keep the digital public square open to dissenting voices. Tune in for a fearless, wide-ranging conversation that cuts through the noise and challenges the boundaries of what can—and should—be discussed in our increasingly surveilled and censored digital society. ▶Follow & Connect with Matthew Raymer: ✩ ContentSafe ✩ The Anti-Censorship Technical Committee ✩ Twitter ____________________________________________________________________ ▶ GET On-Demand Access for Courtenay's Cognitive Liberty Conference https://cognitivelibertyconference.com ----------------------------------------- ▶ Follow & Connect with Courtenay: https://www.courtenayturner.com ✩ Linktree ▶ Support my work & Affiliate links: ✩Buy Me A Coffee! ✩GiveSendGo ✩Venmo ✩Cash App ✩ Richardson Nutritional Center: (B-17!) ✩ Relax Far Infrared Saunas: (Warm Up!) Some believe AI levels the playing field. Will these tools castrate human creativity and imagination instead? Making everyone seem superficially clever but without an ounce of depth? New surveys indicates the left is increasingly embracing assassination and political violence as a whole. Duh. We needed a poll to tell us that? The media is asking why. The answer is surprisingly simple and resides in my archives: propaganda's goal is to create proselytes and militants; fanatics who are primed to take political action at a moment's notice. Bernie blew that oligarch whistle last month while Black Barry (bam ba lam) upped the agitation ante last week. Will run-of-the-mill conservative ever bother to respond or are they content posting memes? Like it? Rate, review, and share it! Hate it? Send it to a co-worker you loathe! In his 1962 book, Propaganda, Jacques Ellul outlines three conditions for propaganda's success. Bombard people with excessive information so they will forget, always have “breaking news” so they do not reflect or think critically, and have no North Star or standard to measure deviation. As Christians we are called to remember, called to think, and called to follow our certain and firm North Star. Dr. Stephen J. Nichols, president of Reformation Bible College and chief academic officer for Ligonier Ministries, discussed how a Christian worldview speaks to these conditions and encourages us to both speak and live truthfully in difficult times.Support the show
In 2014 Rabbi Sacks recorded six thoughts for Ellul, providing wisdom and guidance as he reflected on the year gone by, and the new year soon to begin. In this final message of the 'Thoughts for Ellul' mini-series, Rabbi Sacks discusses Professor Reuven Feuerstein, and draws a parallel between his highly-esteemed work as a child psychologist and our relationship with God. Recorded ten years ago, this remains a timeless message for us all, particularly as we may wish to reflect on our spirituality as Rosh Hashanah draws ever closer.
