Episode Summary: In this insightful episode, we dive deep into the science of breath control and its impact on running performance with James Fletcher—a physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, university lecturer, Olympic trainer, and freedive instructor. James shares his journey from treating world-class athletes to helping his mother manage COPD, leading him to discover the untapped potential of breath training in both health and athletic performance.Key Topics Covered:The Science Behind Breathlessness:James explains the complex neurophysiology of breathlessness and how carbon dioxide buildup, over-breathing, and inefficient breathing patterns can limit a runner's performance.Fascinating insights into how breath-holding techniques and even simple actions like tapping your chest can extend your breath-hold capacity by tricking the body.Breath Training for Runners:Discover the importance of training your respiratory muscles, just as you would train your legs, to delay the onset of breathlessness and improve running efficiency.James outlines simple yet effective techniques like nasal breathing and the "fist breath" method to strengthen your breathing muscles without the need for expensive equipment.Practical Tests and Tips:Test your breathing efficiency by running for 10 minutes using only nasal breathing or see if you can hold your breath for over two minutes. These benchmarks help determine if you're over-breathing during runs.Learn the importance of syncing your breath with your foot strike to reduce the work of breathing and improve running rhythm.Debunking Common Myths:James challenges the outdated belief that the respiratory system isn't a limiting factor in performance, showing how proper breath training can significantly enhance your endurance and speed. The importance of maintaining a balance of carbon dioxide in the body for optimal oxygen delivery to muscles during running. The Respiratory Muscle Metaboreflex:Understanding how fatigue in the breathing muscles can divert blood from the exercising limbs to the respiratory system, and how strengthening these muscles can prevent this, allowing for better performance.Connect with James Fletcher:Instagram: @allaboutbreathingFor MORE Run Smarter Resources

It's a packed Friday! We've got two Final Fours to talk about. We've also got some football. It's Iowa against UConn and South Carolina against N.C. State in the women's Final Four, and all eyes are on Iowa's Caitlin Clark and UConn's Paige Bueckers. Clark always wanted to play for UConn, but Bueckers was the prized player the Huskies recruited in the class of 2020. Only one will lead her team to the national title game. Meanwhile, two N.C. State basketball teams are trying to shock the world. The N.C. State women play undefeated South Carolina, while the Wolfpack men will face Purdue on Saturday. We'll also be talking N.C. State football. The Wolfpack play their spring game on Saturday, and so does Clemson. So we're bringing in the great Roddy Jones of the ACC Network to discuss the biggest storylines in the league. And Roddy is very intrigued by new N.C. State quarterback Grayson McCall. Also, Nebraska's quarterbacks met the media Thursday, which meant we got to see freshman Dylan Raiola's first interview as a Cornhusker. Andy breaks it down. Next, On3's James Fletcher III joins to discuss the men's Final Four. Can UConn keep covering every spread, or can Alabama challenge the Huskies in a shootout? How will the matchup of N.C. State's D.J. Burns Jr. and Purdue's Zach Edey play out? Want to watch the show instead? As Easter weekends go, it couldn't have been much worse for Hull City. A turgid 2-0 home defeat to Stoke City on Good Friday was one of the poorest displays of the season, and while Monday's display at Leeds United was impressive, Liam Rosenior's men still lost and remain six points adrift of the top six with only seven games to go. To look back on the Easter weekend and try to inject some positivity - and realism - into things, the 1904 Club panel were on form. DeBoer talked about the unique challenge of taking over an ultra-successful program rather than one that changed coaches because things weren't working. DeBoer discussed how he wants the offense to look, and he went over the learning curve for quarterback Jalen Milroe and the rest of Alabama's signal-callers. DeBoer also went in-depth on how important it was to get recruits to Tuscaloosa this spring so they could see for themselves that while the coaching staff is new, the standard at Alabama hasn't changed. Next, Andy and On3's James Fletcher III break down the Elite Eight games and look forward to the Final Four. Is the matchup of N.C. State's D.J. Burns Jr. and Purdue's Zach Edey the most fun clash we've seen in the post in a Final Four game this century? City are in the market for at least three players while a host could yet leave the MKM Stadium in a big freshening up of his squad for the final 18 games of the campaign. By that point, the transfer window will have closed and Liam Rosenior will know what he's got at his disposal. What will happen in the window was a key topic of discussion for Barry Cooper, David Prutton, David Burns and James Fletcher, in the latest episode of the 1904 Club podcast from the Hull Daily Mail. If 2023 ended brightly for Hull City with a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers, 2024 started in dramatic fashion and not in a good sense. A 3-1 loss at Sheffield Wednesday with Tyler Morton sent off early on was not what Liam Rosenior had in mind. That performance, the result, Wayne Rooney's sacking, the transfer window and much more was the topic of conversation between Barry Cooper, David Prutton, David Burns and James Fletcher in the latest episode. #022. Today's guest is James Fletcher. We talk about how James combined his love of investing and his love of international cultures into what he does full-time, which is manage his $100M emerging market fund he founded. We discuss what inspired James to start Young Investors Society (YIS), and how their reach now extends into over 1400 schools and 59 countries. James talks about the emphasis on teaching a long-term approach to investing and how rewarding the process, rather than the outcome, is most effective at teaching these kids. We discuss the importance of YIS providing resources to underprivileged communities. And how YIS emphasizes and incentivizes building good habits to ensure that kids actually put in practice the concepts they are learning about. We discuss several of YIS programs including the Dollar-a-day initiative, Money Skills Bootcamps and the Stock Pitch Competition. James discusses the concept of the Million-dollar-decision and the tremendous power of how encouraging our teens to invest early would result in $1M more in their retirement account. We discuss how we, as parents, can foster the importance of investing at a young age and how to develop their mindset around investing early. James talks about the number one lesson that he has learned over the years and the key takeaway for us as parents. We dive into benefits that teens receive in earning the designation that YIS has developed. We cover how YIS measures their impact in the community. And we get into several actionable strategies that we, as parents, should focus on in terms of teaching our kids about money. And how we can foster resilience within our children.Show notes and more at:https://moneydadpodcast.com/session022

Tune in to hear:- Of all times to start a boutique fund, why would James start one in the current climate where the 3 largest asset managers control more of the market share than ever before?- What edge does a small, boutique asset manager have in a world where there are such well-resourced competitors?- How are ESG like suggestions typically met by the companies that James invests in?- What's it like to run a high conviction fund? How does James think about conviction and diversification and what lead him to take this unusually concentrated approach?- Why does James think ESG screening is important and how, specifically, does he incorporate it into his process at Ethos?- How does James think about ESG and investing in countries where the bar for ESG is set very low?- What makes him think emerging markets, which have been priced attractively for many years now compared to the US and which have underperformed, are poised to do well in the future?https://ethosinvest.com/https://yis.org/ Compliance Code: 3115-OAS-12/15/2021

Composer-producer-frontman-wizard JG Thirlwell has been making astonishing, orchestral, bombastic music for decades. Born in Australia, he teamed up with Nick Cave and the Birthday Party, then joined Prag VEC, and soon formed his enduring solo project Foetus. Operating under plethora of pseudonyms and monikers meant to confuse, shock, and awe, Thirlwell continues to churn out an astounding amount of music and to perform as a frontman for his own projects, as well as a composer for animated series Venture Brothers, Archer, and Dicktown. We talked about his beginnings in London, moving to New York in the early 80s, starting out using 16 tracks of tape and an elaborate numerical system, his first time wearing "guy liner," the importance of remembering World War Two, his evolving theories on shock value and fear as a part of performance, and his changing relationship to his Australian roots as a citizen of the world. Musician and visual artist Rick Froberg can't help it, he f*ing loves rock and roll. Throughout his career he has fronted loud, uncompromising, agressive, totally original and influential bands like Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes with his partner in crime John Reis as well as Obits, last of the Juanitas, and others. He continues to record and perform all over the world. Rick creates the album artwork for all of his projects, as well as working as a commercial artist. We talked about getting along with Satan, shitty gigs in front of the culchies, being at the same Fugazi show when someone drew blood, saying what you mean with lead and bludgeoning guitars, the wonders of the internet, cigarette Nazis in Australia, learning analog art design, and a whole lot more. He runs El Studio in San Fransisco, and he handles the guitar, keyboards, bass, and vocals in bands Trans Am, Life Coach, Terry Gross, and Oneida among others. His band Trans Am spearheaded the Electroclash movement in the 90's and continues to melt faces around the world. We had very pleasant chit chat in his studio about recording very loud bands, Krautrock vs. punk rock, missing the "normal days" of Bush, touring in Europe with a Bush mask on, and how to sheild your kids from the apocalypse.
