Later in life, Michael returned to graduate school to become a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, helping blind and low vision individuals navigate the world with confidence and independence. Even in retirement, he continues to share his gifts through advocacy, mentorship, and service. Many in our community know Michael through his unforgettable performances on Behind the Music and community karaoke nights. Instead, he types a few sparse phrases – pedal steel guitar, country Americana folk, acoustic guitar — into his startup Suno's AI music generation software.  A few seconds later, a song comes to life: fluid guitar strums and human-sounding vocals with a smooth Southern accent soar over an upbeat tempo. It's instantly catchy, like if Ella Langley met Lana Del Rey.  The tune isn't a chart-topper or a summer hit, but it's evidence enough for why more than 100 million people have now used Suno to make music. Suno-created songs have gone viral on TikTok, debuted on Billboard charts and racked up millions of streams. Over 7 million songs are made on the app every day, catapulting it to the top of the Apple App Store's most downloaded music apps in April — surpassing Spotify.  “The technology finally allows for billions of people to be creative, to have the fruits of their labor, to feel fulfillment in a different way,” says CEO Shulman, 39. You may know that sometimes I go for an album that is going to be a surefire crowdpleaser with my cohosts. But most of the time, I like picking an album where I genuinely don't know how at least one of them is going to react. It doesn't always work out. BUT, the seemingly impossible dream for me was always to introduce an album to all my co-hosts that they didn't know previously and have not one, not two, but ALL THREE of them fall in love with it.Now don't get the wrong idea - that was never the goal of my picks. I'm far too obsessive to make it that simple. It's a complicated algorithm that tries to counterprogram against my past five picks across year of release, genre, and artist characteristics combined with whatever's in my gut at that moment. It's mostly the gut thing actually. But that “what if” idea was always in the back of my head in general. And with this pick, I passed up the typical Costello albums you'd expect to be the go-to pick here because I've always felt Blood & Chocolate was the underappreciated underdog. “When I started going to rock & roll camp once a summer, I definitely always felt like there was a lot to be proven of being like a girl, a small girl,” says Snail Mail's Lindsey Jordan. “My whole brain was just this ‘Be better than the boys, I have to in order to be able to even just exist' thing, and that took some of the enjoyment out of it. But now I do have a bloodlust for getting better, and I don't know if I would have that if it weren't for having so much of an inferiority complex for so long.” In episode 136, Jordan delves further into how the perfectionism she developed early on, as a preciously talented kid guitarist at rock camp, has been both a blessing and a curse — on the one hand it has inspired her to constantly strive to improve,  on the other it has contributed to intense anxiety that she still battles. We discuss the theme of anxiety and obsession in her life, and the role those things played in the excellent new Snail Mail album, Ricochet. Don't worry, we also get into a lot of lighter fare, talking about the artists she obsessed over as a kid during one of indie music's heydays, when she poured over Tumblr to discover bands like Beach House and Warpaint and Purity Ring and St. Vincent and Lana Del Rey.  Lindsay also shares some details about the first big  Snail Mail tour for Ricochet, and some new things she and the band are trying for these shows.
