Performative masculinity refers to a man who adopts traits associated with feminism and emotional sensitivity—such as drinking matcha lattes, carrying tote bags with feminist slogans, wearing wired headphones, listening to indie female artists like Clairo or Lana Del Rey, and reading feminist literature—to appear more appealing to progressive women. So how does this harm women? FunkyFrogBait has the answer!

Dublin-born, Cork-based artist Laura Elizabeth Hughes released her debut album Knots & Echoes on October 3. Having started out by uploading Lana Del Rey covers to YouTube, Laura released a steady stream of singles over the years, collaborations with Cian '1000 Beasts' Sweeney and co-wrote one of Ireland's entries to Eurovision. It's all led up to her debut album, a blend of spoken word with folk fused lyricism that showcases her delicate vocal harmonies alongside melodies that shimmer with emotion. Knots & Echoes moves through the push and pull of youth and memory, where home is as much an inner landscape as it is the people and places we return to, some of them not being easy places to exist in. These pieces follow the quiet imprints others leave behind, the knots we tie, carry, and slowly work loose, through to the self-reckoning that comes with trying to carve out a space of our own. Connection, loss, and the steady but tentatively open armed shift toward selfhood run through each track; the past shaping the contours of the present for better or worse. Laura is supporting Bell X1 on their winter tour: October 24: Theatre Royal, Waterford October 25: Limetree Theatre, Limerick October 26: Spiegeltent, Wexford November 28: Guildhall, Derry November 29: Mandela Hall, Belfast December 4-5: St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway December 6: Gleneagle Club, Killarney Buy Knots & Echoes: https://lauraelizabethhughes.bandcamp.com/album/knots-and-echoes

Millions have been impacted by Charlie Peacock's Grammy Award-winning production and songwriting work. A smaller, but devoted group has been with him since his days as a Sacramento-based alternative pop artist and member of the progressive Exit Records scene. But very few have ever heard the work he did prior to his 1983 debut, Lie Down In The Grass, until now. On the heels of the release of his expansive and revealing memoir Roots and Rhythm, Peacock just dropped a never-before-heard collection of songs he recorded in 1980 and 81 with the legendary rock producer David Kahne (later named among the 500 most important Rock Producers by Rolling Stone for his work with Regina Spektor, The Bangles, Paul McCartney, Fishbone, Lana Del Rey, Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Stevie Nicks and others.) The Kahne Sessions reveals a young diamond in the rough, and on this special episode Charlie takes us back to those early days in his career and puts it all into context. And there is a LOT more where this comes from. This conversation, recorded in person in Charlie's home studio, covered everything from his earliest days as a musician, to the transformation sobriety and faith brought to his work, to concerns he has over the ways commodification, dehumanization, and artificial intelligence are impacting the way today's artists are engaging with the work. That will all be coming soon, but we wanted to get THIS part - celebrating the release of The Kahne Sessions out to you right away. Be sure to subscribe to the show on whichever platform you prefer so you don't miss a beat. And if you missed our very first episode - way back in 2019 - it featured none other than Charlie Peacock. You can find that show HERE. The hosts also discuss their personal joys, particularly focusing on the importance of home and crafting. The conversation also touches on the significance of love and personal connections, as well as the challenges of dealing with insurance and healthcare. They discuss the importance of authenticity in content creation, the impact of life phases on music appreciation, and share their experiences with Disney events and themed marathons. The conversation highlights the joy of community and the challenges of navigating online opinions. In this episode, the hosts delve into the intricacies of a recent music video and its accompanying album, discussing various tracks and their meanings. They explore the production aspects of the music video, the storytelling elements in the songs, and the personal connections listeners may have with the lyrics. The conversation flows through a track-by-track analysis, highlighting themes of inspiration, personal reflection, and the evolution of Taylor Swift's artistry. Takeaways The Fate of Ophelia music video contains many hidden elements that enhance its depth. We wonder what happens to music video sets once they're done filming (Taylor, mail us something!) The Life of a Showgirl album draws inspiration from various artists, including Lana Del Rey, The Jackson 5, and more. Elizabeth Taylor's song reflects on wealth and storytelling in a unique way. Opalite symbolizes the idea that happiness can be man-made. Father Figure explores themes of perspective and storytelling and is maybe definitely about Scooter Braun. Eldest Daughter resonates with listeners through relatable themes of family dynamics. Ruin the Friendship reflects on youthful experiences and generational differences. Actually Romantic addresses societal trolls with humor and wit. Wishlist emphasizes personal aspirations and the importance of individual happiness.
Cover songs often aren't what they should be. Many are pale and pointless facsimiles of the original songs, and others even take off into some new direction for no reason whatsoever. Rude. So this week the "How We Heard It" guys let their imaginations run wild, freewheeling through music history (from 60-odd years ago to today), mixing and matching some of the most popular songs of all time to an expansive variety of distinctive artists, old and new. They make inspired choices as they spitball ideas, conjuring some songs you just know would be great, some you'd at least want to check out and some that would doubtless be terrible. There are no rules to the game - artists who are long dead could be called upon to cover new songs just as easily as new artists could be called upon to cover old songs (with AI, anything is possible). As a result, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Karen Carpenter and Prince can be called upon just as easily as Lady Gaga, John Legend, Billie Eilish and Benson Boone. Who would cover the Beatles? Who would the Beatles cover? You'll likely be surprised who the guys pick to cover Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," John Lennon's "Imagine," Bette Midler's 'Wind Beneath My Wings," Blondie's "Call Me" and R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" - just to name a few. Find out what very different songs they have in mind for Lana Del Rey to cover and the unthinkably bizarre (albeit tantalizing) pair they'd pick to remake "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. Free your mind and play along.
It's Pop Culture Thursday, which means Jared dives into Page Six and lets the riffs fly. He breaks down the “snub or not” moment between Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp at Paris Fashion Week, then pitches the rom-com we all deserve: Lana Del Rey and her alligator wrangler husband taking on haute couture. Jared questions why Travis Kelce gets boyfriend bonus points for spending his birthday at Taylor's movie premiere and contrasts the vibes and fans of Taylor Swift versus Charli XCX amid that “actually romantic” dust-up. He talks about Amy Schumer's very public Mounjaro journey and how the internet bullies celebrities into over-explaining. Finally, he weighs in on the “very real” PDA tour of Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun and why people seem weirdly suspicious of her every move!Get $10 off your first month's subscription of Nutrafol & free shipping with promo code FEATHER at https://www.nutrafol.com

What is the fascination that we have with seductive avatars of oblivion? Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams indoctrinated the adolescent me to the possibilities of the Succubus, and became my tween age, gothic sex symbol; the painting by Pre-Raphaeite John Millet: Ophelia (who floats beautifully in the river) hung on my dorm wall for years. Today, Double Trouble features a couple of ice queens who inspire detached sexual delirium, one contemporary, and one long gone, but still as magnetic as when she walked the earth: the enigmatic Lana Del Rey and Andy Warhol's muse - Nico (nee Christa Paffgen). LANA DEL REYWhen Lana Del Rey sings “We were born to die,” you know she's not fooling around. Her voice might be studiously without affect, but you can sense some psychic turmoil underneath. And when she purrs, “you like your girls insane,” she is obviously speaking from experience. Her Greta Garbo air of mystery smolders like an ember that could reignite and singe you at any moment. Of course, LDR is vastly more multi-dimensional as an artist than simply existing as a blank canvas on which to project our emo fantasies. Her later work, such as her fifth album, the widely acclaimed “Norman Fucking Rockwell” has generous reserves of humor, complexity, and intelligence to ponder and appreciate. And, her recent marriage hints at even further explorations of domestic bliss. So maybe our gothic goddess will be embracing life going forward.NICOSpeaking of blank canvasses on which we can project our fantasies - Nico, the fashion model, turned Chanteuse, was the ultimate receptive surface. She wasn't even a singer at first, veering off key as she often did, but her voice with its hypnotic, Germanic drone had its undeniable charms. And, Andy Warhol knew the socko glamor that he was wielding when he saddled the Velvet Underground with her, making her their front person. Who knows if the group, as brilliant as they were, would have garnered any attention initially if it wasn't for Warhol's 1960s answer to Marlene Dietrich. Nico struggled with heroin addiction and died tragically young in a senseless bicycle accident, but before she left us she created, (with the help of Velvet's veteran John Cale as producer) some unforgettable mantras. Frozen Warnings is one of the most compelling - It's harmonium and droning viola conjure the sense of tip-toeing across a frozen lake and feeling the ice cracking under your feet as you try to reach the glaciated siren.

On this episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with one of the biggest names in country today – Jordan Davis! Jordan's newest album, Learn The Hard Way, was just released, and it features other amazing country artists, such as Marcus King on the track “Louisiana Sticks”. Jordan's gearing up for his upcoming headlining tour, and he'll be on the road playing hit venues like Red Rocks and Wembley Stadium. The conversation kicks off with how country music is becoming more mainstream, with artists such as Post Malone and Lana Del Rey coming into the scene. He also reflects on the music legends who've inspired him, such as John Prine, Jason Isbell, Smashing Pumpkins, and Tom Petty. Jordan talks about what it was like growing up in Louisiana with musicians in his family, and explores how country music impacted his musical upbringing. Jordan also highlights the new record and what it's like playing large shows at venues like Radio City Music Hall. He talks about his song with Marcus King and how they added new elements into the track. The conversation closes with Jordan listing his top 5 podcast series, his favorite new country artists, and his favorite burger spots in the US. Boll weevils are bigger than ever and they have new skins. Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey are having fewd together in a car to squash the beef. All edibles are laced with weed and uncontacted tribes use feet to fish because fish don't have any feelings and there are no bugs yet and no Mary who smells like powerbait because ya gotta wash up down there bud. Guinness is handing out records for people who sail down the Mississippi with a scoby up their butt or holding a tiny pumpkin. Reverse Tintin was incredible
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a repeat customer along with his well-known photographer friend-slash-collaborator who's done some record covers you're definitely familiar with. It's Ruban Nielson and Neil Krug. Nielson is the frontman of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the band he started in his native New Zealand before relocating to Portland, Oregon, where he still lives. UMO, as the band is affectionately known, has often been categorized as psych-rock, but I'm not sure that label is accurate or complete. There's definitely some oil-lamp vibes going on, but there's something more personal and direct happening underneath the swirling guitars and hooks. That's maybe never been more true than on this year's Curse EP, which was Nielson's way of writing and creating through the grief of his younger sister's untimely death from cancer. He channeled that energy into songs that were also inspired by ‘70s Italian horror movies and gloomy metal records, but somehow it's not a bummer at all. Check out “DEATH COMES FROM THE SKY” right here. As you know if you're a regular listener of this podcast, we mostly feature musicians, occasionally actors, every once in a while a producer or writer. But I'm not sure if in all of these years we've ever welcomed someone chiefly known as a photographer. That changes today, with Neil Krug, whose photographs you've likely seen even if you don't know his name. Krug is maybe best known for his shots of Lana Del Rey, and he also did the iconic cover of Tame Impala's The Slow Rush. He and Ruban go way back, having worked on artwork and photos for Unknown Mortal Orchestra over the years—and maybe in the future? In this great conversation, these two chat about the making of Curse, working together on UMO's Sex and Food record as well as other UMO stuff, the ridiculously over-the-top reaction of Ruban's fans to his dabbling in AI artwork, and the joys of David Lynch. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:20 – Start of the chat 3:02 – On making Curse and music as therapy 10:20 – Nielson on AI tools and the reaction from UMO fans 16:50 – UMO's "analog-only photography" policy at shows 21:42 – How Krug and Nielson first met 25:45 – Nielson's cape phase 26:42 – On UMO's Sex and Food and the color blue 27:50 – Sex and Food's original title was... 31:51 – On SB mixes, Hanoi, Curse, and other non-traditional UMO records 34:45 – On David Lynch and the power of cinema 36:00 – The story behind The Slow Rush artwork 40:41 – Predictions on the next UMO record 44:02 – On "darky, spooky aesthetics" Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ruban Nielson and Neil Krug for chatting. Our favourite Americana girlies are fighting! Alligator wife Lana Del Rey aired her beef with American Teenager singer Ethel Cain to the public by sharing a snippet of an upcoming diss track entitled 'All About Ethel'. The lyrics call out Cain for hating her Instagram post, posing similarly with the pair's shared ex Jack Donoghue and trying to be the most famous girl at Waffle House. In the hours and days since, Nicki Minaj has waded into the beef, fans think they've worked out which Peter Griffin meme tweet pissed Lana off and Azealia Banks has accused every tongue that rises against Ethel of transphobia. In this week's episode, hosts Ione and Gina get stuck into the nuances of stan wars, why certain artists get more leeway on being potentially problematic and whether or not the pair will work it out on the remix.Buy tickets for our London issue launch here!Check out https://www.squarespace.com/POLYESTER10 to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code POLYESTER10.A statement by journalists: We condemn Israel's killing of journalists in Gaza and urge integrity in Western media coverage of Israel's atrocities against Palestinians.Have an opinion and want to be featured on an upcoming episode? Honestly you guys, we spend a good portion of the episode fangirling over Ethel Cain, but that's not all. We dive into Taylor's current album rollout (are we ruining the joy of music by trying to crack every code?), the limits of stan culture (we've GOT to cool it), and the unfolding Lana Del Rey vs. Ethel Cain discourse (a.k.a. the Kendrick vs. Drake drama for sad girls). We wrap things up with a full recap of the Ethel Cain concert, and spoiler alert, it was nothing short of transformative. Created and produced by Claire Donald and Tess Bellomo For more RAM, go here. Plus, Taylor Swift isn't the only one with a new album coming out in October, Florence + The Machine are returning, and Josh recalls the time he tried and failed to match Florence Welch's ethereal energy. I'm giving 1-800 SLOOTS the serious attention it deserves and taking your calls from a VERY special dial up phone (vintage from Argentina IF you even care…) These are my favorite videos to record right now because you sloots are that good. Mind in the gutter with your boss? Faking a British accent? Love the beach but stuck in cow-town? This episode is for you. Also, don't worry I fill you in on the Great Gatsby party (hint: it's similar to my Lana Del Rey at Coachella story, if you know you know.) Enjoy sloots! Keep calling ; ) To be featured on the next 1-800 SLOOTS, leave a voicemail at +19295654836
