Join Robert Ellsberg in this One on One interview with author, Daniel Horan, as they discuss "A White Catholic's Guide to Racism and Priviledge". Get your copy today at https://maryknoll.link/d4c974This book is conceived as a resource for Catholics—white Catholics, in particular—to begin the work of relearning what racism in the US context is all about. This includes addressing hard realities that white people have typically been able to avoid, due to the blissful ignorance afforded us by an unjust system of racism in the United States and the Church. Among the questions addressed: What is racism? What does it mean to be white? Why is racism a white problem? Why doesn't anything seem to change? What does the Catholic Church teach about racism? And, where do go from here?Daniel P. Horan is professor of philosophy, religious studies, and theology, and director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame. He is an affiliated professor of spirituality at Oblate School of Theology, San Antonio, TX, and a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter. He is the author of over fifteen books, including two from Orbis: Catholicity and Emerging Personhood and Engaging Thomas Merton.
Is the emotion of fear abused in politics, advertising, and other parts of life? What is the difference between natural fears and unnatural fears? Can fear be narcissistic? Can fear be transformational? Is hope the antidote to fear? These are some of the questions posed by the Paulist Deacon Affiliates to Fr. Dan Horan, OFM, in this fascinating installment of Deacons Pod. Fr. Dan is author of the new Paulist Press book "Fear and Faith: Hope and Wholeness in a Fractured World." A Franciscan Friar, he also is director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN, and co-host of The Francis Effect podcast. ABOUT THE SHOW: Deacons Pod is a podcast for everyone. But, it's especially created to inspire and give hope to people on the “threshold of faith”: Those who are thinking about going to Church and those who are thinking about leaving Church. Deacons Pod is hosted by the Paulist Deacon affiliates. The podcast is a production of the Paulist Fathers. More at deaconspod.com

Saint Augustine famously wrote that, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." This summarizes well what we might call a spirituality of divine love and the human longing for relationship. This Tuesdays with Merton presentation explores Thomas Merton's own contributions toward developing a spirituality of love, which surfaces as a recurring theme in his writing from his earliest journal entries and books until his untimely death. Drawing on Merton's wisdom, we may come to better distinguish for ourselves between 'true' and 'false' love in our own lives and spiritual journeys. Daniel P. Horan, OFM, is Professor of Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology and Director of the Center for Spirituality at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana. He previously held the Dun Scotus Chair of Spirituality at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. A columnist for the National Catholic Reporter, he is the author of fourteen books, including The Franciscan Heart of Thomas Merton: A New Look at the Spiritual Inspiration of His Life, Thought, and Writing, Catholicity and Emerging Personhood: A Contemporary Theological Anthropology, and his two latest are titled A White Catholic's Guide to Racism and Privilege and The Way of the Franciscans: A Prayer Journey Through Lent. He also recently co-edited the book The Human in a Dehumanizing World: Reexamining Theological Anthropology and Its Implications. He is co-host of The Francis Effect Podcast. This episode introduces a discussion on family life as presented in the papal exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, the Joy of Love. It discusses its perspective on such critical issues as divorce-remarriage, birth control, and the LGBT issue offering less emphasis on church rules and a greater realization of the need for compassion as families struggle in today’s world. It softens the ban on divorced and remarried Catholics being excluded from the Sacraments. This first segment introduces you to Love, Sex, and the Joy of Amoris Laetitia as presented by theologian, and author, Reverend Daniel P. Horan, OFM where Father offers an introduction to the Joy of Love. In the second segment, Josh Elliott interviews Candace Moss, a theologian and professor of the New Testament at Catholic University on this exhortation. And in the final segment, Professor John Leonard is interviewed who further explains this exhortation as moving away from a pronouncement of church rules to the need for personal conscience in these important matters. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/catholic-church-reform/message
