In this message, we hear updates from the Pastoral Team and the beginning of a new series from Pastor Danny Cortez.
In this message, we hear from Pastor Danny Cortez on a series in Exodus.
In order for us to understand the joy of the first people that celebrated Christ's birth, we have to understand the context in with Jesus came. Jesus came in the fulness of time—a time marked by darkness and evil. A time of great misunderstanding of who God is. Jesus came to show us what the Old Testament could not. He showed us what God is like. Jesus shows us what love looks like in this darkest of times.
One of the most frequently asked questions I've gotten over the years is, “Has your husband deconstructed with you and, if so, how?” Today, I'm finally going to take some time to address this. We're going to veer off topic from our mental health series and dive into marriage and other partnerships. Joining me to talk this through is my dear friend Danny Cortez. Danny has been on the podcast before but I had to bring him back this week. He is someone who has intimate insights into this topic of deconstructing with your partner. I've toyed with the idea of having a recommitment marriage ceremony and come to the conclusion that Danny is the pastor I would want to reside over it. He is someone I trust with my deconstruction story. Tune in to experience his gentle presence and hear his wise words on deconstructing with a partner. Show Highlights: Danny and his wife's background. The importance of understanding we will change throughout our marriage. Why the goal of deconstructing with your partner is authenticity. Why we cannot harass our partners to deconstruct with us. Why beliefs don't always translate to good character. How we are all in a never-ending process of deconstruction. How to deconstruct with your partner when one of you is more articulate. How to get to the deepest layer of disagreements. Why it's so important that both partners are trauma-informed. How deconstruction feels like being in a new relationship with the same person. In this busy season, it's easy to be in a rush that we miss seeing and participating in the divine presence of God. Like the first advent, when God came disguised in a humble state, the sacred is often concealed in the ordinary and mundane. But if we can pause and listen, we can be brought into wonder over God's creation.
Psalm 127 reminds us to re-orient ourselves to the love of God. By doing so, we are able to find rest in the midst of all the concerns of life. It is when we find our identity as God's beloved that we are able to have clarity in his will for our lives.
Psalm 123 and 124 call us to hear the prayers of oppressed people who have sought after God's deliverance. In these Psalms, we are invited to align ourselves with the work of God. We are given the ability to hear how God's people have prayed and are praying so that we might open our own ears to the cries of those who are in need.
For many Christians, God's justice is mainly related to being justified by God as a means to salvation. But the scriptures show us that biblical justice is more often related to restorative justice—the idea of making things right towards vulnerable people who have been taken advantage of. From the prophets to Jesus, we find that God is calling us to make the world a more just place by seeing that each person is created in God's image and must be treated with value.
At the center of all things is a love story that has existed since before the beginning. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have danced in a movement of love that has brought each person of the godhead eternal joy. In creation, God moved to bring all things into this dance but sin has kept us from entering. But through adoption, we are able to participate by moving in step through the notes of love, kindness, justice, grace, and mercy. And we are able to experience the joy of the Trinitarian relationship most evidently when we do so in community, with one another.
The good news of the gospel isn't just about getting to heaven, but it's about bringing God's kingdom on earth.
Jesus emphasized the importance of bearing fruit as disciples of Christ. Specifically, he taught us that the fruit we bore came from being connected to him which resulted in us loving one another. As a community, we are to lean into this love even in the midst of our differences. Because it is then that we will show to the world that we are his disciples.
In this Easter message, we talk about how we affirm the resurrection every time we live into our Baptism in Christ, and we deny it every time we put on our old selves who have died with Christ. He is risen indeed.
There is a need for us as the church to listen to what is really at the heart of the race conversation. But the question is, can we hear truth even when it’s difficult? God invites us to pay attention so that we can discover the beauty of Christ in every person.
This Vision Sunday, the new Pastoral team shares a message for our community as we look back on where we have been, where the Spirit is moving now, and where He is taking us. The earnest of the holy spirit is like a downpayment of where He wants us to go next where everything that is old is new again, from the new way the elders and pastors are working hand-in-hand to the way our community is working to bring shalom here in Long Beach.
The posture of humility is necessary if we are to understand how to love people around us. As Dallas Willard writes, “Understanding is the basis of care,” or another way to put it—Understanding is the basis of love. If we aren’t willing to listen carefully and set aside our defenses, our ability to love will be hampered.
In this message, we hear from the new Pastoral team as they teach on John's message to the church in Revelation 13-18 and what that means for us today.
Danny Cortez kicks off our week of guests. He has officiated high school football for over 20 years and is a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. Danny is always in the middle of things and knows how to see the game from the inside out. We will chat about what makes high school football so special and how some memories are bigger than the moment they happen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/15mph/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/15mph/support
A couple of weeks ago, we wrapped up the Parenting Forward conference. Today, I’m going to air some highlights from the conference so that you can experience some of the best parts of the speakers too. It may feel hyperbolic to say the conference changed my life, but in many ways, it did. Not only were the conversations I had with the speakers so incredibly life-giving, but the experience of going live with the attendees and engaging with them more intimately reminded me powerfully of how listeners of this podcast are full, powerful human beings with families, jobs, and hobbies. Please go check out each of the speakers’ work: follow them on Twitter, buy their books, and let’s continue to be in conversation about parenting with healthy spirituality. Show Highlights: Barbara Brown Taylor shared six different ideas parents can help to re-enchant the world with our children. Next up, Casper ter Kuile shared the problem we all are facing as a culture of loneliness, and how we can begin to address it with ritual and belonging. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg talked about how we find theology and profound spirituality in the act of parenting. Lauren Duca discussed the different ways that young people have been boxed out of connection to a sense of agency. Next up, we had Danny Cortez, who talked about parenting and the patriarchy. Rev. Jacqui Lewis helped parents to tell a better story for their children. Our job is to be story weavers or to midwife a story to help a child midwife a story, to own an account, to change a story, and to be transformed. Micky Scottbey Jones discussed Enneagram and Parenting. Sometimes Enneagram spaces can feel very white and evangelical, so I appreciated having Micky’s perspective as a certified Enneagram instructor. Jessica Taft goes through five different assumptions, how to become aware of these assumptions, examine them, and disrupt them. Rachel Goble and Matthew Paul Turner talked about the ethics of telling children’s stories. Last, but certainly not least, Science Mike shared with us what it’s like to parent after faith deconstruction. Original Air Date: June 3, 2014 In today's episode, JD discusses a few news articles, including Planned Parenthood issuing a 'pastoral letter' to assure people that God approves of abortion, and then discusses several music artists that started out in contemporary music - as illustrated in an article from Breathcast. Then, JD plays a lecture he gave at his church Sunday evening that explains why his church voted to remove their denomination affiliation from the Constitution and why they voted to adopt the London Baptist Confession (1689) as he went the Spurgeon's historical reasons for disfellowshiping from #DOWNGRADE during his Down Grade controversy. Then, JD puts Al Mohler in the Daily #DOWNGRADE for addressing Danny Cortez' affirming homosexuality in spite of church autonomy - which is the reason Al and others in the SBC hide behind to avoid addressing other (more controversial) scandals. JD urges real leaders to rise up who will lead even when it's unpopular.
Original Air Date: June 5, 2014 On today's episode, JD does some 'housekeeping' and gives additional info concerning recent reporting, including that the reporting on Danny Cortez has not been exactly accurate and more on the possible gag-order on Mohler concerning Ergun Caner. JD then talks about Brad Whitt and Peter Lumpkins low-blow tweets pointing out that the recently released Army deserter and P.O.W. was raised Presbyterian and therefore, Calvinism might to blame for his desertion. Then, JD discusses Beyonce's pastor sticking up for her entertainment 'style' and finally, he plays a song 'Jesus is my boyfriend' and covers a bizarre advertisement in the Louisiana Baptist State Inquisition's newspaper, the Baptist Message in the Daily #DOWNGRADE.
