How do beliefs jump from one generation to the next? Passing on your belief system - whether religious or otherwise - can be a really important priority for parents. Do churches offer much preparation or training to help people share what they hold dear? And do they support parents and grandparents who discover that children have perhaps turned their back on religion? If it takes a village to raise a child, does it take a village to school them in morals, ethics and spirituality? Teasing out some answers to these questions in the studio with Claire Graham are Roz Stirling who runs retreats and for a long time led the youth work strategy for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland; Boyd Sleater, coordinator of Northern Ireland Humanists; Lindsay Allen, a parent of two boys and a retired Baptist Pastor; and Fr Martin Magill, a Catholic Priest in west Belfast and a co-founder of the 4 Corners Festival.

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Scott Oakland, a former Baptist pastor, a Reformed and Lutheran elder and, finally, a grateful Catholic convert. Scott shares the story of how his love for the Bible and his quest to find the Church founded by Christ drew him ever deeper in towards the ancient Catholic Church. From a Baptist pastor, questioning his beliefs about infant baptism, to a Reformed Calvinist, steeped in the theology around predestination, to a Lutheran elder, holding on to a deep belief in the sacraments but, ultimately, unable to deny to truth of the Catholic faith. Americans are becoming less religious and two new surveys out just last week punctuate just how quickly that's happening. According to the Public Religion Research Institute, 26 percent of Americans now consider themselves unaffiliated with any religion. That's up from 21 percent a decade ago and just 6 percent in the early '90s. According to Gallup, the number of Americans who attend religious services weekly or nearly every week has fallen from 42 percent in 2000 to 30 percent now. In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, Galen speaks with a roundtable of experts on religion and society about why the decline has happened and what it portends for American communities, networks and politics. Joining the podcast are Melissa Deckman, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute; Ryan Burge, Professor of Political Science at Eastern Illinois University and a Baptist Pastor; and Daniel Cox, Director of the Survey Center on American Life. Bobby Leonard is a Baptist Pastor who went viral in a video (not for herpes) from August 2023 (which is in the 21st Century) for stating that he would let a rapist go free for raping a woman who was wearing shorts because "A Man is a Man". See, men just love shorts. They don't like dresses or overalls or skirts - it's shorts that fire up the engines of lust and overwhelm a man's sensibilities and turn him into a rapist. It's pretty understandable if you think about it. And totally forgivable if you are Pastor Bobby Leonard! Anyway, when sane people saw the video they had something to say and Bobby apologized. On the sign in front of his church. UPDATE: Bobby has also apologized on his church website (it's right under the "giving" tab) and also on Instagram. No word if he apologized to his congregation. Part of the apology reads: I want our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to be glorified through my life. He deserves my BEST not my WORST!
Ken Hensley was a Baptist Pastor, and Kenny Burchard presided over a Pentecostal congregation. What did they think about the word "apostolic?" Matt Swaim, Ken Hensley, and Kenny Burchard discuss what kinds of things came to mind in regard to the word "apostolic," and what they thought, and currently think, about carrying on the apostolic mission of Jesus. In this episode, Savannah brings the story of Baptist Pastor and local Mayor Fred Copeland to Julie, highlighting the tragic tale of a man targeted for his "behind the scenes" crossdressing and the effects it had on his life after a conservative blog site exposed his behaviors to the public. While Copeland addressed his congregation for what had been revealed, and while his family and friends and community seemed to be fully behind him with support, Fred Copeland did take his own life in the aftermath of the doxxing of his personal life. This is a sensitive subject so we do want to be mindful that this episode could be triggering for some people. ----- SAVANNAH HAUK is the author of “Living with Crossdressing: Defining a New Normal” and “Living with Crossdressing: Discovering your True Identity“. While both focus on the male-to-female (mtf) crossdresser, “Defining a New Normal” delves into crossdressing and relationships and “Discovering Your True Identity” looks at the individual crossdressing journey. Her latest achievements are two TEDx Talks, one entitled "Demystifying the Crossdressing Experience" and the other "13 Milliseconds: First Impressions of Gender Expression". Savannah is a male-to-female dual-gender crossdresser who is visible in the Upstate of South Carolina, active in local groups and advocating as a public speaker at LGBTQ+ conferences and workshops across the United States. At the moment, Savannah is working on more books, blogs, and projects focused on letting every crossdresser–young and mature–find their own confidence, expression, identity and voice. My friend Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh (PhD in Mass Communication, Master's degree in Public Communication, Master of Divinity from Duke, Married Mother of Three, LDS Author, Grew Up LDS/RM) joins us to share insights about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Fatimah (co-author of “The Book of Mormon for the Least of These” a three-volume series; and her new book “Love Memory: A Memoir & A Practice” edited by Marci McPhee) talks about her own story growing up to in a multi-ethnic/culture/religious family and her personal journey in the LDS Church and her “soft separation from the Church” leading to her current role as a Baptist Pastor. Fatimah, who is respectful of the Church, talks about God's love for all God's children, seeing a social justice charge in our scriptures, and the need to bring those on the margins into full inclusion. Fatimah gives advice for younger people including “being the greatest explorer of your life” and how she, as a clergy member, has a responsibility to learn, grow, apologize, and “do no harm.” On a personal note, Dr Salleh gave a sermon (see show notes) in 2015 called “Theology From the Margins” that gave me the theological perspective and doctrinal foundation to become an ally for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints. It was transforming for me as she spoke about the Canaanite woman, not reading the scriptures with the lens of “who is in and who is out”, seeing and using privilege, and being an ally. Thank you, Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh, for being on the podcast and your life work to help people find the love of God, bring the human family together, heal each other, and find Jesus. You are a great human doing much good in our world. What do two Evangelicals from Northwest Indiana have in common with each other? Their profound interest in the Restoration and the churches of the Mormon Movement would be the answer! Pastor Kyle Beshears (PhD in Religious Studies) joins Steven Pynakker to discuss his interest in the history and theology of the Restoration. In particular Kyle's focus is on the history and beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that is best know for being founded by James Strang. I hope that you'll find this conversation interesting and perhaps a good introduction to this little known church of the Restoration. Please look out for a paper that Kyle wrote “In Love and Union: The Writings of Mr. Charles J. Douglass, Secret Plural Wife of a Mormon King".
