Our debate over the quality of Christian movies is now notorious and a running gag on the podcast, but this is only the second time ever we've done an official "movie swap." Ross assigns Jared a Christian movie to watch. Jared assigns Ross a "Christian-"eque movie to watch. Then they sit and down and compare notes. On this week's episode of the podcast, the guys discuss 2006's "Facing the Giants" and 1998's "Simon Birch."

In this episode of the Northwoods Church Matters podcast, Pastor Bobby Pell joins the conversation to unpack the structure, purpose, and often confusing world of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). Whether you're a long-time Southern Baptist or brand new to Northwoods, this episode is designed to help you make sense of the acronyms, agencies, and hot topics that shape the SBC. We break down how the SBC is not a top-down denomination but a cooperative group of independent churches focused primarily on missions. Pastor Bobby and Pastor Matt discuss everything from the Cooperative Program (our “missions piggy bank”), to the work of the International and North American Mission Boards, to the role of our seminaries, Lifeway, and even the sometimes-controversial Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). They also take a gracious but honest look at current SBC controversies, and much more. If you've ever wondered about anything SBC-related, be sure to checkit out.
Where is your hope? What types of things are you placing your trust in today? In his sermon, “Is This The King?” centered on 1 Samuel 10:17-11:11, Alex Trotter shared how even though Saul looked like the King who would save Israel from their enemies, ultimately it was Christ who would redeem his people from death and crush the serpent's head once and for all. Unlike the Israelites, we mustn't turn to rulers of this world for our ultimate salvation, even despite their apparent victories. Instead, we must turn our eyes to the true Prophet, Priest, and King, Jesus Christ and look to him to save us from the brokenness that surrounds us.

An American and a Scotsman walk into a podcast studio . . . It's not just the start of an obscure joke; it's the start of this conversation about patriotism. Is it a sin? Is it biblical? How should Christians think through national patriotism in a way that still maintains their allegiance to God above all?

What are you currently desiring or pursuing that might be more shaped by the world's values than God's will? Can you identify a time when God used a disappointment or failure to draw you closer to Him? In what ways is Jesus reshaping your desires to want more of Him, rather than just His gifts? In his sermon “The King You Desire” based on 1 Samuel 9:1-10:16, Pastor Josiah shared how Israel received what they asked for—a king like the nations. Saul looked the part: tall, strong, impressive. But beneath the surface, he was spiritually unfit and directionless. Sometimes, God gives us what we want to reveal that what we long for isn't truly what we need. Yet even in our rebellion, God's sovereign grace is at work. He uses our misguided desires, our detours, and even our failures to draw us back to Himself. Ultimately, the story of Saul points us to Jesus—the King we didn't ask for but the one we desperately need. In Him, our desires are transformed to want what He wants—and we discover that the deepest satisfaction of our hearts is not in what we get, but in whom we belong to.

In this episode, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon tackles the soft betrayal of evangelical leaders who have traded truth for cultural approval. Why do our demands for greater freedom often lead to deeper bondage? What happens when we ask God for what we want instead of trusting Him for what we need? In his sermon, “So, You Want A King?” based on 1 Samuel 8:1-22, Pastor Bryan Catherman explores Israel's demand for a king and the deeper spiritual rebellion it represents. As the people reject God's rule in favor of a monarchy like the surrounding nations, we are confronted with a timeless truth: when we choose self-rule over God's sovereign reign, we inherit the consequences of our own folly. Yet, even in judgment, God's mercy shines through as He ultimately provides not just any king, but the one King we truly need—Jesus Christ. The message challenges us to consider where we, too, may be exchanging divine kingship for worldly security, and reminds us that only under God's rule do we find true freedom and life.
In this episode, Jay and Johnna debrief the 2025 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting. They discuss why Johnna chose to attend alone, the deaths of two high-profile survivors—Jennifer Lyell and Duane Rollins—and the emotional and physical toll survivor advocacy has taken. They reflect on the SBC's failure to follow through on promised reforms, the lack of accountability, and the ongoing harm caused by the institution's refusal to meaningfully address abuse. The episode also explores the role of power, complicity, and silence within evangelical culture, as well as the broader implications for churches and Christian communities across the country.Support the show
One of the critical marks of Christianity is the willingness of God's people to cooperate together in Kingdom endeavors. My church is a part of the Southern Baptist Convention. The SBC is defined by cooperation more than organizational structure or any of the things that bind other denominations together. The SBC is a convention of churches who have voluntarily associated with each other because we know that together we can accomplish more than we can apart. Last week was the annual SBC meeting held in Dallas, TX. I want to share with you the state of Southern Baptists: the good, the bad, and the embarrassing. On this episode, we're back live at Lot 63 in Winston-Salem. I was joined once more by Corey Walker & Bill Leonard for a wide-ranging conversation from the Council of Nicaea to smartphone addiction. We explore the roots of our civilizational crisis, tracing lines from the Anabaptist radicals 500 years ago who said "God alone is judge of conscience" all the way to today's algorithmic plantation where our phones know us better than we know ourselves. Bill reminded us that the mentality behind drowning Felix Manz in 1527 is the same one calling for politicians to be "tarred and feathered" today and drew out the connections between Christian Nationalism and the SBC. Corey talked about fear as the driving force across the religious spectrum, the collapse of institutions that never included everyone anyway, and why the "rise of the nones" might actually be the Spirit revealing itself in new places - like right here at Lot 63 on a Thursday night. Sometimes the best church happens when you're arguing across difference instead of hiding in your algorithmic echo chamber. Corey D. B. Walker is Dean of the School of Divinity at Wake Forest University. As a scholar, he's committed to a broad vision of human flourishing. Love the episode? Send us a text!In this episode of Breast Cancer Conversations, I had the privilege of speaking with Bob Furniss, a father, husband, and author who has turned his family's heartbreaking experience with breast cancer into a mission to educate and advocate for early detection. Bob and his wife Susan founded the nonprofit WarriorPrincess.org in honor of their late daughter, Keisha Furniss, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 30.Bob shared the emotional journey of Keisha's diagnosis, treatment, and the impact it had on their family. He recounted how Keisha's initial symptoms were misdiagnosed and how the eventual discovery of her cancer came as a shock. Despite the devastating news, Keisha faced her illness with incredible strength and resilience, earning the nickname "Warrior Princess."This episode is a poignant reminder of the impact of breast cancer on families and the power of turning grief into purposeful action. I hope you find inspiration in Bob's story and are encouraged to have those crucial conversations about breast health with their loved ones.SURVIVINGBREASTCANCER.ORGAttend a free virtual SurvivingBreastCancer.org program (support groups, yoga, medication, expressive writing, art expression, and more!):https://www.survivingbreastcancer.org/eventsFollow us on InstagramSurvivingBreastCancer.org: https://www.survivingbreastcancer.org/Breast Cancer Conversations: https://www.instagram.com/breastcancerconversations/About SurvivingBreastCancer.org: SurvivingBreastCancer.org, Inc. Segment 1: • SBC fails (again) to pass the Law Amendment affirming only qualified men as pastors. • Historical cracks in this area have led entire denominations astray—are we next? • “Affirming but not affirming” language is the same tactic used in gender debates. Segment 2: • If churches are being disfellowshipped for female pastors, why not codify the standard? • Fear of man, cultural compromise, or fear of shrinking numbers? • SBC votes to keep the ERLC—why are we funding institutions that reflect the culture more than Christ? Segment 3: • Newsboys singer admits years of sinful living—how should Christians respond? • Discernment needed: are we gossiping or redeeming? • Real repentance or damage control? How we judge reveals more about us than them. Segment 4: • Can someone live in unrepentant sin for 20 years and still be a believer? • The key question isn't “when were you saved?” but “are you saved right now?” • Deception is powerful—and the local church is the safeguard God provides. ___ Thanks for listening! What's the big deal? You're just standing up there, talking. On this week's episode of the For The Church Podcast, Jared Wilson and Ross Ferguson suggest some things about preaching the average church member may not know. Some misunderstandings, misperceptions, and even mis-aimed appreciations.
Segment 1: • Baptism isn't optional—are you obeying or just attending? • NYT slams the SBC for decline, but biblically faithful churches are growing. • Upcoming SBC resolutions could shift the direction of the denomination. Segment 2: • Chan throws former church members under the bus with zero accountability. • NT Wright offers a confused, pro-choice stance that fumbles biblical clarity. • Christians need courage to stand for life—and wisdom when speaking on it. Segment 3: • AP targets Ken Ham while Rome sells “apostolic blessings” like souvenirs. • Pastors often quit not from failure, but exhaustion and stagnation. • Leaders must know their limits—and churches must know how to support them. Segment 4: • A 5-cent donation sobers Todd—faith isn't about amount, but sacrifice. • Jehovah's Witnesses offer works-based salvation—but the true Gospel is grace. • When evangelizing cults, aim straight for the conscience with truth. ___ Thanks for listening!
