Kathy Escobar returns to Nine LIves to explore the joys and struggles of living in community—especially through the lens of an Enneagram Two. She opens up about learning to set boundaries, navigating faith shifts, and the deeply personal journey of learning to receive help. In this powerful episode, Kathy shares how the loss of her son to suicide continues to shape her story and her ongoing evolution. She speaks candidly about grief, healing, and the loss of a faith community—and how those experiences have deepened her understanding of compassion and connection. Kathy highlights the crucial stretch for Enneagram Twos: receiving help from others. Kathy draws from the nurturing nature of Type 2 to create safe, authentic spaces through The Refuge in Denver and CommunityHeals, which she co-leads with her husband, Jose. Shane Larsen grew up in the Latter Day Saints faith, but after a faith crisis, he began using critical thinking, asking the tough questions and found himself deconstructing his faith. Now, he wants others who leave the comfort and familiarity of their faith tradition to know that they are not alone. He has a TikTok account called "Shane Deconstructs" where he talks very openly about his faith shift, sometimes in funny ways and sometimes in ways that make one think a little deeper about the things they've been told are true. He shares his journey with openness, vulnerability and a lot of heart. Shane can be found on TikTok at this link! The podcast Shane talked about, Marriage on a Tightrope, can be found here! The book Shane talked about that made his faith shift begin is called A More Beautiful Question by Warren Berger. He is not only an author, but also a philosopher and artist and deep thinker. He has had an incredible journey out of evangelicalism, and now is happily planted in an Eastern Orthodox Church. He craves liturgy, tradition and authenticity in his religion. His journey shows us all how important it is for an artistic philosopher to find meaning and connection in God and nature! Today, we honor the journey of Benjamin Cremer (Ben), a Wesleyan Pastor, Theologian, and Writer who makes a few waves on social media with his posts that admonish the church to lean into the way of Jesus with compassion, kindness, and love while also leaning away from political power, control and judgment. It's a message that goes against the flow in today's church, but it's a message that is desperately needed. It's not every day a guest brings me to tears, but Ben managed to do it in this episode! To listen to and subscribe to his NEW Podcast "Into the Gray", click here!Click to follow Ben on TWITTER (X), Instagram or Facebook. You can subscribe to his newsletter, Into the Gray, by clicking here.To register for Theology Beer Camp, click here and use the code JOURNEY2024 to save $25!To help me support The New Evangelicals for my December Fundraiser with Celebrity Weekend Over the Edge, click here!If you are interested in learning more about my Life & Faith Transition Coaching or if you just want to read my blog or learn more about what I do, please visit my website at www.leslieneasecoaching.com. Today we honor the journey of Tim and Sarah Whitaker! Tim started The New Evangelicals back in 2020 and Sarah is his wife, who has been a real encouragement to him along the way (and sometimes she makes appearances on TNE videos). I wanted to hear their journey together as a couple going through deconstruction. Their story is one that I think we can all learn from, as they weren't always on the same page theologically; however, their marriage not only survived, but thrived! 10 Things To Tell You exists because Meg Tietz put a microphone in my hand nearly a decade ago when she launched the Sorta Awesome podcast and asked me to be a regular cohost. Join Margi and John for our next episode of Thrive Stories this coming Tuesday at noon (MST). One of the most pressing questions parents ask after a faith shift is, “What do I do about my kids?” Without orthodoxy, the way forward feels disorienting. In this interview, Jon Ogden, co-founder of UpliftKids.org, suggests that a strong foundation already exists in the form of science and wisdom. With this foundation, we don't have to feel like we're starting with nothing. Thrive Stories is a new podcast series where Margi (alongside John or Jenn) will be interviewing a member of the community twice per month. The interviews will be shorter (1-2 hours), story-based, but will be focused on a particular aspect of healing and growth AFTER a Mormon faith crisis (thus the THRIVE name). They will happen on Tuesdays at noon (MST). Some examples of areas of thriving include: Family Relationships, Healthy Boundaries, Finding Community, Finding Meaning/Purpose, Dealing with Grief/Death, Religion after Mormonism, Health Sexuality, Parenting, Improving Physical Health, Identity, Health Marriage/Relationships, Secular Spirituality, Word of Wisdom 2.0, and Women Finding Their Own Voice after Mormonism. If you would like to nominate someone you know who would be a great candidate for a THRIVE interview, please nominate them (or yourself) here. ————— We are 100% donor funded! Today we're talking about the big "D" - Deconstruction. A pretty loaded word at the moment, we're talking about faith, growth, falling apart, and moving on when faith changes. Listen to Ryan and Janel share their own evolving stories, and learn about this every changing process. Not for the faint at heart, deconstruction is hard work and we're here to walk with you. We mentioned a few things in the Podcast that we want to highlight here. Faith Shift by Kathy Escobar has been a really helpful book for Janel. Ryan was influenced by Rob Bell and Brian McLaren, in particular A Generous Orthodoxy. We also wanted to highlight TikTok star Piper Ramsey-Sumner @cbfplr and recommend @AbrahamPiper and @JoLuehmann. You might also check out @eve_wasframed on Instagram. This episode is a deep dive into faith deconstruction. Why is it so isolating and painful? Why isn't it more supported and encourage? Why does it hurt? Where will we end up? Will, we lose our faith, friends, family, church, mosque, temple, our ways of being that are familiar? Will we even be us? I have my own faith deconstruction experience 20 plus years in the making that has shaped who I am and how I see life, faith, spirituality, and relationships and that is still going on it just looks different than when it first began. What I want to leave you with is you aren't crazy and you aren't alone. You aren't crazy and you aren't alone. In this third installment of the BIG KNOW series, minister David Moses Perez shares how we can experience strength in the midst of chaos. Recorded at Spero Dei on 2/23/2020.
We’ve ALL had that nagging feeling that keeps you up at night, ruminating over what went wrong and how you could’ve done something differently, made a smarter decision, or had the right come-back line. You replay the moment over in your head and you can’t get your mind off of it. We’ve all been there. How do I regain my peace of mind after a moment of weakness, failure, frustration or loneliness? Your mind is quiet and calm. In this fifth installment of the BIG KNOW series, minister David Perez shares how we can experience peace in the midst of chaos. Recorded at Spero Dei on 3/8/2020.
There is an old anonymous saying… Who is it that is unhappy? The one who finds fault. It’s sorta true, isn’t it? When we’re unhappiest… is when we’re tied up in knots about something. It’s when we’re zeroing in on the faults of someone else and we can’t let go of something — that our own souls are miserable. It’s when we’re zero’d in on our own faults and shame. Click here to keep up with the latest Goose News: http://wildgoosefestival.org/signup/ Faith shifting, deconstruction, possibly reconstruction in fits and stages of some sort, is a challenging, exhausting, and slow process under any circumstances. Doing so while also parenting children can feel utterly overwhelming. Are we hurting our children? What about their spirituality and friends at church? How do we navigate the often suffocating pressure from well-meaning family members who worry that it isn’t just our eternal salvation that is now at risk but also our children’s? We parents in a faith shift need to connect and hear from each other that we aren’t alone. We need to share our resources, ideas, hearts, and space to be on this journey together. This is a parent support session facilitated by Daneen Akers, Brian McLaren, and Micky Scottbey Jones
On this, the final episode of Season 2, author and speaker Marla Taviano joins us to tell her story and share about her faith shift. Pastor Candice teaching about Faith Shift
If you have experienced an evolution in your faith, whether you're going through a faith shift now, or went through one in the past, this interview will encourage you. It will help you learn why you're not crazy, what stages you go through, and how to come to terms with your change. You are not alone! Kathy has really hit on something in her book by the same title of this podcast. This topic is important because today in America, Christianity and spirituality are going through a radical faith shift. People are questioning religious doctrines and practices, rethinking their faith, and leaving the church in droves. The Christian Post cited a study done in 2014, that says 3,500 people leave church per day, 1.2 million a year. Even though some churches still thrive, more and more are becoming revolving doors. Particularly if they come out of fundamentalist and evangelical churches, people face fierce opposition from those inside and often struggle to adjust and find a new, more inclusive way. If you feel like a spiritual refugee, a church burnout, or a freedom seeker, this podcast is for you! Also visit www.spiritualbrewpub.com to learn more.
Melissa Greene is a musician, most notably a member of the Christian group, Avalon, from the years 2002-2009, bringing us lots of hit songs. She served as a pastor at Grace Pointe in Tennessee, which is known for its progressive positions, including being LGBTQ affirming. And just recently, she has left that position and are now the founder, alongside Anna Skates, of the intentional community Imaginarium. Melissa is married and the mother of two children. Melissa feels like my sister from another mother. We share a very similar faith trajectory, from a conservative evangelical background to becoming a seeker of an expansive spirituality and community. In this episode, she shares her faith shift story, including how to interact with our past selves and how faith shifting impacts her parenting. We talk about what values to teach our children after dramatic changes in our own beliefs, alternative rituals to do with kids (she shares a "River Prayer" that her children loves and is just beautiful!), and the song she sings over her daughter at bedtime. I invited her on the show because I want to encourage those of us who are figuring out new ways to PARENT FORWARD how to find or create new communities that are life-giving. I ask her about how IMAGINARIUM began, what the role of children is in IMAGINARIUM, and we leave with some recommendations for others who may want to start similar projects in YOUR communities. I hope you find her ideas inspiring and helpful, and both Melissa and I would love to hear from you. Like us on social media if you listen to the show!
