This conversation with Gareth Higgins is an exploration of how storytelling, empathy, and a commitment to love can transform even the most entrenched conflicts. Gareth shares his personal journey growing up in Northern Ireland, where the dominant narrative was one of division, fear, and violence. But through the transformative power of films like 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' Gareth discovered the importance of seeing the humanity in those we might otherwise label as 'other.' He realized the need to become an ally - not by imposing his own vision, but by listening and allowing those he seeks to support to define what true allyship looks like. Gareth goes on to unpack a profound insight - that all conflict is rooted in fear, and beneath that fear lies love. By learning to love and accept ourselves, we open the door to a new kind of storytelling, one that moves beyond 'us vs. them' narratives and towards a vision of liberation, reconciliation, and interdependence. This conversation is a masterclass in the power of imagination, empathy, and a willingness to embrace the complexity of the human experience. Whether you're navigating personal struggles or seeking to understand the roots of societal conflict, Gareth's wisdom offers a roadmap towards a more just, compassionate, and connected world. So join us.Gareth Higgins was born in Belfast in 1975, grew up during the northern Ireland Troubles, and now lives in the US. He writes and speaks about the power of storytelling to shape our lives and world, peace and making justice, and how to take life seriously without believing your own propaganda. He has been involved in peace-building and violence reduction in northern Ireland and helping address the legacy of conflict, received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen's University Belfast, and helped teach the world's first graduate course in Reconciliation Studies at Trinity College Dublin. He also helped found the Wild Goose, New Story and Movies & Meaning festivals. Gareth leads retreats in North America and Ireland; and he founded The Porch Magazine. Brian McLaren says Gareth's new book How Not to be Afraid is “a beautiful book”, Kathleen Norris says it's “a necessary book”, and Micky ScottBey Jones says it's “a much-needed resource for skill-building through our fear and trauma, so that we might create the belonging and communities we desire”. If you're familiar with the Enneagram through pop culture, you might be using it as a personality test to gain more insight into what makes you tick and how you act. However, what's so cool about what our guest, Micky ScottBey Jones, will share with us today is that it's not just a personality test. In fact, your personality is not fixed and the strategies you use to cope and interact in the world can be expanded upon and changed, if you want them to be.So, today we're talking all things Enneagram. Guest Micky ScottBey Jones is an Enneagram expert, coach, and facilitator. In today's episode, we're covering topics like what the Enneagram actually is, the impact it can have, why people love it so much and it's rise in popularity, how it helps you feel seen and see others, how bias fits in, practical ways you can apply Enneagram to your real life, and what to do with fear as it arises. Now, of course, we get philosophical in this conversation and while discussing Enneagram, which can help you be in relationship to self and others better, we also dive deep into identifying what our responsibility to other human beings is. What are we really responsible for when we see another human being in their wholeness? And, one of the most powerful parts of this episode, among the many, is when Micky shares part of her personal journey with Enneagram. She says, “The Enneagram helped me not hate myself.” That's huge — there's so much there. It's all packed into the next hour, so let's get to it. And if you know your Enneagram type and your'e watching on YouTube, go ahead and tell us what it is in the comments.***Register for my FREE Self Healing the Root workshop to learn about your trauma responses and how to start changing them.

In this episode Dr. Egerton is joined by Micky ScottBey Jones, Enneagram teacher and multi-faith movement chaplain, for an empowering conversation exploring social justice through the lens of the Enneagram. * Drawing on Dr. Egerton's work and latest book, Know Justice Know Peace, their conversation illuminates how the inner work of each of the nine Enneagram archetypes creates healing, elevates consciousness, and aligns us as individuals with the heart of humanity in order to eliminate systemic racism. They invite us to explore our own personality archetype in order to activate ourselves as allies within a beloved community; a community that acknowledges that, while we may come in many shades and colors, we are part of one human race. * This episode was recorded during a live online event on March 30th, 2023. Welcome to The BRC & Friends Podcast where you will get to know activists, artists, academics, and adventurers who are committed to making the world a better place. In Episode 51, Bruce, along with co-hosts Laura Mariko Cheifetz (she/her) and Micky Scottbey Jones (she/her) speaks with guest David Magdael (he/him). David is a media strategist for documentary films and indies, and talks about his trip to the SXSW festival in Austin, and how the films that he's worked on recently have been directed by Asian Pacific filmmakers. He discusses https://www.badaxefilm.com/ (BAD AXE), the documentary that won the Audience favourite award at SXSW, and how it chronicles the experience of a Cambodian-American family in rural Michigan. As for the Oscars, we also heard about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Sh7xw_OdQk (ASCENSION), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcFJPTj94aM (WHEN WE WERE BULLIES) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPFkcoTfr7g (QUEEN OF BASKETBALL). David also talks about how, for him, life started at 32 and marvels at how the ‘Filipino boy from South Stockton, 95209' built a business that allows him to be in the presence of filmmakers while their lives change. He also shares advice for Micky's daughter, currently in film school, about pursuing her calling and talks about his version of ‘80-20' rule. Thanks for listening! Welcome to The BRC & Friends Podcast where you will get to know activists, artists, academics, and adventurers who are committed to making the world a better place. In Episode 50 you get to meet the other two co-hosts of the show: Jorge Bautista (he/him) and Micky Scottbey Jones (she/her). Jorge is a pastor at a United Church of Christ congregation in San Mateo, California. Micky is a coach and justice doula, currently based in Nashville, Tennessee and she sees her work as a doula being translated to other avenues of life — where she accompanies people who are birthing something into the world. Bruce chats with his co-hosts to get to know them a bit better, starting with figuring out how he met both of them. Did he meet Micky at a conference and walk up to her after realizing they were the only two people of color in the room? He can't remember, but this sounds quite realistic. Bruce and Jorge chat about how they met at a protest event in support of migrants crossing the border to the US, and about being handcuffed together in a police vehicle. You can expect chats about childhood memories evoked by scents (peach turnovers, microwaved popcorn) and why our hosts don't fully understand why the NFL, horror movies, and beer are as widely liked as they are. This episode comes from a series hosted by our friends at Faith Matters Network called How to Get Through: collective resilience in a world on fire. It was designed to prepare social justice movements to weave healing and care into our lives and work before, during and after crises and big “movement moments” like this one. This first conversation with Sidney Morgan, adrienne maree brown, Prentis Hemphill and Micky Scottbey Jones is about how we actually do the work of being human together - flawed and all, mistakes, conflict and pain included. How do we survive these times? How do we navigate conflict? How do we live into accountability? How do we take care of each other along the way. It is a powerful and brave exploration of the practice of being change, not just doing change. And it is essential medicine for this moment. Enjoy. In this post-election episode, we talk with Margaret Ernst, program manager for Faith Matters Network. When we planned this interview, we knew we would talk about post-election resilience and what it means to be a white clergy leader in movement spaces. We didn’t know that Walter Wallace, her neighbor in Philadelphia, would be killed by police just days before our conversation. So you may hear the anxiety and heartbreak in our voices. In this conversation, Margaret lays out a timely call to action for white faith leaders. We talk about movement chaplaincy, the labor of spirit care work, and Margaret’s parent Carla - and Carla’s wisdom always to imagine themself forward. Margaret, who began her career in faith-rooted organizing with Faith in Action affiliate POWER Interfaith, is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a program manager with Faith Matters Network. A couple of weeks ago, we wrapped up the Parenting Forward conference. Today, I’m going to air some highlights from the conference so that you can experience some of the best parts of the speakers too. It may feel hyperbolic to say the conference changed my life, but in many ways, it did. Not only were the conversations I had with the speakers so incredibly life-giving, but the experience of going live with the attendees and engaging with them more intimately reminded me powerfully of how listeners of this podcast are full, powerful human beings with families, jobs, and hobbies. Please go check out each of the speakers’ work: follow them on Twitter, buy their books, and let’s continue to be in conversation about parenting with healthy spirituality. Show Highlights: Barbara Brown Taylor shared six different ideas parents can help to re-enchant the world with our children. Next up, Casper ter Kuile shared the problem we all are facing as a culture of loneliness, and how we can begin to address it with ritual and belonging. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg talked about how we find theology and profound spirituality in the act of parenting. Lauren Duca discussed the different ways that young people have been boxed out of connection to a sense of agency. Next up, we had Danny Cortez, who talked about parenting and the patriarchy. Rev. Jacqui Lewis helped parents to tell a better story for their children. Our job is to be story weavers or to midwife a story to help a child midwife a story, to own an account, to change a story, and to be transformed. Micky Scottbey Jones discussed Enneagram and Parenting. Sometimes Enneagram spaces can feel very white and evangelical, so I appreciated having Micky’s perspective as a certified Enneagram instructor. Jessica Taft goes through five different assumptions, how to become aware of these assumptions, examine them, and disrupt them. Rachel Goble and Matthew Paul Turner talked about the ethics of telling children’s stories. Last, but certainly not least, Science Mike shared with us what it’s like to parent after faith deconstruction. Earlier this year, Rockwood partnered with the Charles & Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation to release Empower, Change, Transform, a free guide about building successful leadership development programs. So, for the fifth episode of the podcast, we thought we'd highlight the guide. Our panel of guests for this episode are all very familiar with leadership development programs: Abby Saloma, Director, Leadership and Talent for the Schusterman Foundation Sharon Price, Director of Strategic Initiatives here at Rockwood Neil Spears, Executive Director of the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center, and alum of both Rockwood's Art of Leadership and the Schusterman Fellowship The guests discussed a wide range of topics, including the value of vulnerability in leadership development, the importance of building connection with cohorts, and how not to measure transformation. The panel also referenced a poem by Micky ScottBey Jones called “Invitation to Brave Space”. You can find that poem here. For more information on developing and strengthening leadership development programs, download the free guide: DOWNLOAD THE GUIDE Last but not least, this is our final episode of 2019…. but not our final episode of the podcast! Click here to keep up with the latest Goose News: http://wildgoosefestival.org/signup/ Faith shifting, deconstruction, possibly reconstruction in fits and stages of some sort, is a challenging, exhausting, and slow process under any circumstances. Doing so while also parenting children can feel utterly overwhelming. Are we hurting our children? What about their spirituality and friends at church? How do we navigate the often suffocating pressure from well-meaning family members who worry that it isn’t just our eternal salvation that is now at risk but also our children’s? We parents in a faith shift need to connect and hear from each other that we aren’t alone. We need to share our resources, ideas, hearts, and space to be on this journey together. I believe with all that I am that my liberation is tied up in yours – so let’s get free together. Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is a passionate advocate for “a new kind of Christianity” – just, generous, and working with people of all faiths for the common good. Notable among the many books he has authored are: “A New Kind of Christian””A Generous Orthodoxy,” “Everything Must Change,” “We Make the Road by Walking,” and “The Great Spiritual Migration.” He co-authored a picture book for all ages called “Cory and the Seventh Story,” and his book “The Galapagos Islands: A Spiritual Journey” will be released this October. What a fun podcast episode! Brian McLaren, Micky ScottBey Jones, and Daneen Akers all joined for a conversation about parenting for the common good. Many of us know the faith we do not want to pass on to our children, but what does being a faithful parent look like after our childhood faith is gone? That's the topic for this session...plus we answer some questions you sent in. Brian McLaren wrote a new children's book with Gareth Higgins. It is called Cory and the Seventh Story and should be required reading for parents and grand parents with the children in their life. Don't worry adults, they didn't forget about you. They also wrote a version for you that explores the same themes. That's right, you can also get The Seventh Story: Us, Them, and the End of Violence. Micky ScottBey Jones - the Justice Doula - accompanies people as they birth more love, justice and shalom into our world. As a womanist, faith rooted, contemplative activist, healer, and nonviolence practitioner, Micky supports students, clergy, activists and everyday leaders in a variety of roles - speaker, writer, facilitator, pilgrimage guide and teacher. She is the Director of Resilience and Healing Initiatives with the Faith Matters Network and is a core team member with The People's Supper who has gathered more than 4,000 people around tables since the 2016 U.S. election for bridging and healing conversations. Micky's educational background includes a B.S. in Consumer and Family Sciences with an emphasis in Child Development and Family Studies, numerous mother-baby certifications for doulas and lactation consultants, a M.A. in Intercultural Studies from NAIITS/Portland Seminary, and she is currently pursuing advanced studies in the Enneagram while completing several writing projects to be released in 2019. Named one of the Black Christian leaders changing the world in Huffington Post, Micky travels the world exploring peacemaking and relationships in different contexts, spreading revolutionary love, engaging in authentic conversations, participating in transformative experiences - and most importantly - she never passes up a dance floor. She has been a contributor at Evangelicals For Social Action, The Porch Magazine, Sojourners, and Red Letter Christians. You can interact with her work and collaborations at Faithmattersnetwork.org and Mickyscottbeyjones.com and catch her social media on Facebook: facebook.com/MSJSpeaks/ and Twitter: @iammickyjones. Daneen Akers is a filmmaker, writer, and parent who believes deeply in the power of stories. She is currently writing an illustrated children's book called Holy Troublemakers & Unconventional Saints, which will feature 50 original portraits and profiles of people of faith who worked for love and justice, even if that rocked the religious boat. Daneen found that most of the books she'd read as a child that had anything to do about faith were not compatible with the type of faith she now has as an adult. She knew she needed better stories for her own children, stories that help us transcend fears, connect with each other, engage in justice, and model an expansive and fully inclusive view of any Divine. Given the enthusiastic response to the Holy Troublemakers project, she realized she wasn't alone. There are is a growing movement of parents and others looking to do better with the stories we tell ourselves and our children. You can find her current project at www.holytroublemakers.com. About 25% of our listeners are from outside the USA. Whether you live in the USA or not, you don’t need me to tell you that America is more divided than ever. We can chat and/or argue all day about why we are more divided than ever but we are not going to focus on those things today. What we are going to focus on is how can people that believe different things and value different things come together to find common ground around food and drink? Right after the inauguration in 2017, three groups came together to launch a project called #100Days100Dinners. Shortly after, this project turned into The People’s Supper. The People’s Supper aims to repair the breach in our interpersonal relationships across political, ideological, and identity differences, leading to more civil discourse. And, they plan to do it in the most nourishing way possible – over food and drinks! As we approach the midterm elections, you can get in on the action. Last weekend, they launched Midterm 5 — a series of suppers they are going to do for the the few weeks leading up there midterm elections. They are doing 5 large suppers in cities and town all over the USA. Even if you can’t make one of those, you can host your own! I’m hosting one this week in Nashville and I’ll report back to you during next week’s podcast. Visit their Midterm 5 page on their site to get more details for hosting your supper. Don’t delay! That’s all I’m going to tell you for now because I’m going to let my guests — Micky ScottBey Jones and Margaret Ernst — tell the rest. Micky is the Director of Resilience and Healing Initiative at Faith Matters Network and Margaret is the Program Manager at Faith Matters Network. They’re amazing. You’re going to love them. I can't believe this is the 1000th podcast episode from Homebrewed Christianity! I just get pumped thinking about all the nerdy fun that we've had over the hours of audiological goodness. This special episode was recorded live at the Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina. The Wild Goose Festival is a special experience for me each year and often serves as a 'family reunion' of sorts for the podcast. Over the course of the episode you will hear from Christian Piatt, Kristen Howerton, Micky ScottBey Jones, Robyn Henderson Espinoza, and Julian Deshazier (AKA JKwest). It is the combination of two different shows from the WGF MainStage. Enjoy Get ready for another 1000 episodes.
