Welcome, Back Vibe Tribe! We hope you all are having a great end of summer, and now the start of the fall season. Today, we bring you "Political Awareness", in which we discuss the current state of politics in the United States and our feelings on our divided political climate. We get into the sad reality that we are no longer a true democracy but have become an oligarchy and what that means. We discuss the need for continual civic and political engagement to enact the changes we wish to see, starting from the ground up at a local level to a state level, and finally on a national level. Jana talks about her interest in running to be elected for some political office in the future, but her valid concerns about people trying to buy politicians and the frustrations of money in politics. We also take a deep dive into a new book that Kacie started reading, and reads from in the episode, entitled " How to Start a Political Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics", by author and journalist Lauren Duca. We talk about how a lot of us wish to enact change and engage in politics, but we just don't know where to begin. This book we discuss helps us understand where to start. And there is so much more... Please join us in this lively, passionate, and thoughtful episode on the state of American politics today. Stay tuned for more in-depth conversations and future podcast episodes on this topic as we learn more and evolve in our engagement. We want your viewpoints and opinions on what we discussed today. In this episode, Em and Caz look at some biblical stories that depict sexual violence, focusing particularly on Genesis 34 (the rape of Dinah) and 2 Samuel 13 (the rape of Tamar). They structure their discussion around some of the myths and misperceptions about rape that remain prevalent today. By exploring narratives of rape in both the biblical texts and contemporary culture, they explore how these myths and misperceptions can distort understandings of sexual violence in really harmful ways.Find us on Twitter @BloodyBiblePod, on Facebook @TheBloodyBiblePodcast, and on Instagram @bloodybiblepodcast. Ellie and David discuss the term "gaslighting" in episode 21. They begin by jumping into the origin of the term in the 1940s and its entrance into mainstream discourse today. Then the two go onto explore how gaslighting works, and whether it needs to be deliberate (spoiler alert: no!). Finally, David and Ellie think about structural and cultural gaslighting in systems of oppression. Also discussed in the episode: The Chicks, epistemic injustice, the medical establishment, and...is Socrates a gaslighter? Gaslit? Neither?Works discussed: George Cukor, Gaslight (film) Veronica Ivy, “Allies Behaving Badly: Gaslighting as Epistemic Injustice” Cynthia A. Children in America have been largely boxed out from politics. They have missed out on that sense of political agency that our culture affords to adults. It’s not that they don’t care; they aren’t in a state of apathy but are experiencing disconnect. How can we empower our kids to shift from a passive acceptance of politics to active navigation of it? Lauren Duca is an award-winning journalist who speaks out on this very topic. She used to work at Teen Vogue and is the author of the book How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics. Lauren has become a voice for young people--young women in particular. She spoke at my conference last year on the political awakening she had when Trump was elected in 2016. She also taught how we can raise conscious citizens who have political agency. It was an amazing talk that everyone at the conference loved, so I am sharing it with all of you today. Show Highlights: What a political awakening is. The research Lauren did to uncover the political convictions of American youth. Why a sense of agency is more important than knowledge. How to create a sense of agency for our kids. How to go on a media diet. Becoming an expert on one topic that interests you. The foundation of forming a political opinion. Different ways to raise your voice. How to navigate conversations with those who disagree with you. How to make democracy a daily habit in your life. By age twenty-five, journalist and author Lauren Duca (Teen Vogue; "How to Start a Revolution") had the perfect husband and a highly-successful career (who DOESN'T want to obliterate Tucker Carlson?). Inside, though, she was miserable, and felt "evil" for not being happy with her life. Lauren shares how Trump's election and a frog DMT ceremony helped her realize she was a lesbian; she also talks femmephobia, and shares tips for staying politically active when everything seems overwhelming af. Lauren Duca shot to viral fame when she published "Donald Trump is Gaslighting America," an exploration of the nature of truth and reality, for Teen Vogue in 2016. She then famously appeared on Fox News where she handled herself with pose and intelligence in the face of a disrespectful, misogynistic, neckless Tucker Carlson. She has since written How to Start a Revolution, a handbook for the youth (and everyone) of America, detailing ways to become actively involved in the democratic process. She writes "Pancake Brain" a weekly newsletter that attempts to make some sense out of...all this. She is a supremely intelligent, passionate woman who has had her entire world turned upside down (maybe more than most) over the last 4 years, and yet has managed to stay entirely true to her self and her beliefs. She has come out as queer, and is currently quarantined with her partner and her staunchly conservative family. It's a party! I loved every moment of our conversation, and I implore you to follow her on all of the social things, but absolutely to read her book and join her newsletter!Support the show (http://patreon.com/lightersidepodcast)
A couple of weeks ago, we wrapped up the Parenting Forward conference. Today, I’m going to air some highlights from the conference so that you can experience some of the best parts of the speakers too. It may feel hyperbolic to say the conference changed my life, but in many ways, it did. Not only were the conversations I had with the speakers so incredibly life-giving, but the experience of going live with the attendees and engaging with them more intimately reminded me powerfully of how listeners of this podcast are full, powerful human beings with families, jobs, and hobbies. Please go check out each of the speakers’ work: follow them on Twitter, buy their books, and let’s continue to be in conversation about parenting with healthy spirituality. Show Highlights: Barbara Brown Taylor shared six different ideas parents can help to re-enchant the world with our children. Next up, Casper ter Kuile shared the problem we all are facing as a culture of loneliness, and how we can begin to address it with ritual and belonging. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg talked about how we find theology and profound spirituality in the act of parenting. Lauren Duca discussed the different ways that young people have been boxed out of connection to a sense of agency. Next up, we had Danny Cortez, who talked about parenting and the patriarchy. Rev. Jacqui Lewis helped parents to tell a better story for their children. Our job is to be story weavers or to midwife a story to help a child midwife a story, to own an account, to change a story, and to be transformed. Micky Scottbey Jones discussed Enneagram and Parenting. Sometimes Enneagram spaces can feel very white and evangelical, so I appreciated having Micky’s perspective as a certified Enneagram instructor. Jessica Taft goes through five different assumptions, how to become aware of these assumptions, examine them, and disrupt them. Rachel Goble and Matthew Paul Turner talked about the ethics of telling children’s stories. Last, but certainly not least, Science Mike shared with us what it’s like to parent after faith deconstruction. After discussing the Subway Book Review project in our Episode 22, Uli Beutter Cohen and I discussed five books that Uli has recently read and recommends: How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee, an essay collection by a Korean American artist and activist; The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy, which has been referred to as a striking anti-patriarchal manifesto written by an Egyptian American activist, “with enough rage to fuel a rocket”; On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong Ocean is a young Vietnamese-American writer — born in Saigon, he was raised in Hartford, Connecticut and his book is semi-autobiographical and speaks to his experiences as an immigrant and a gay man; COMMUTE - An Illustrated Memoir of Female Shame by author and illustrator Erin Williams, which has been referred to as intimate, clever, and ultimately gut-wrenching graphic memoir about the daily decision women must make between being sexualized or being invisible; and How to Start a Revolution, by Lauren Duca. To compliment Chee’s work, Uli also mentioned and discussed Bird by Bird: Instructions on Writing and Life, Anne Lamott; and Devotion: Why I Write, Patti Smith

We talked with journalist and author (https://www.amazon.com/How-Start-Revolution-American-Politics/dp/1501181637) This week, we talk with her father, Ralph about why things got so tough and how they repaired their relationship. Progressive activist Ryan Knight chats with author Lauren Duca about her new book, "How To Start A Revolution"
Lauren Duca was devastated on election night of 2016. She couldn't believe Donald Trump won and was disappointed her father voted for him. That disappointment eventually turned to frustration and anger. About a month after the election, (https://www.teenvogue.com/story/donald-trump-is-gaslighting-america) and that only made things worse between Lauren and her dad. She joins us to talk about the last three years, her relationship with her father - and how they repaired it - and about her mission of empowering young people to have a voice in American politics. She shares thoughts from her book (How to Start a Revolution) and how dads can support their kids, even when the disagree. It may be the most powerful Positively Dad episode yet and a must listen for every father.
My guest is Lauren Duca. Her new book is How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politic (https://www.amazon.com/How-Start-Revolution-American-Politics/dp/1501181637)s. In it this Teen Vogue award-winning columnist shares a smart and funny guide for challenging the status quo in a much-needed reminder that young people are the ones who will change the world. Duca investigates and explains the issues at the root of our ailing political system and reimagines what an equitable democracy would look like. It begins with young people getting involved. People like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress; David and Lauren Hogg, two survivors of the Parkland, Florida shooting who went on to become advocates for gun control; Amanda Litman, who founded the nonprofit organization Run For Something, to assist progressive young people in down ballot elections; and many more. Called “the millennial feminist warrior queen of social media” by Ariel Levy and “a national newsmaker” by The New York Times, Dan Rather agrees “we need fresh, intelligent, and creative voices—like Lauren’s—now as much—perhaps more—than ever before.” Here, Duca combines extensive research and first-person reporting to track her generation’s shift from political alienation to political participation. Throughout, she also draws on her own story as a young woman catapulted to the front lines of the political conversation (all while figuring out how to deal with her Trump-supporting parents). Lauren Duca is an award-winning journalist best known for her massively viral piece “Donald Trump is Gaslighting America” in Teen Vogue and an interview with Tucker Carlson. Her writing can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and New York magazine, as well as in her ongoing column for Teen Vogue: “Thigh-High Politics.” She graduated from Fordham University and holds a masters from New York University, where she is currently a visiting scholar at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. She’s mostly just trying to get you to follow her on Twitter: @LaurenDuca.. Special Guest: Lauren Duca.
In this episode Lauren Duca, author of How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics, and I talk about what changed after the 2016 election. We talk about how many young people experienced a political awakening and the shift that has engendered. You’ve probably heard the term military industrial complex. But have you heard about the political-industrial complex? We all hear that young people are the future, well of course they are. Lauren and I talk about the future that young people are trying to create and how we all, regardless of age, can be participants in democracy. The way the founding fathers intended. Best of all, Lauren gives us suggestions as to how we can make a difference without quitting our day jobs.
This episode is Dr. Timaree’s wide ranging conversation with journalist and author Lauren Duca. We talk with Lauren about her new book, "How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics"; about Fox News' toxic impact on our culture, about Trump's ongoing gaslighting, about online bullies and purity politics, and about the news that Lauren came out this year, and how that self-discovery was intimately tied with her political awakening. Award-winning journalist Lauren Duca is an unmistakable voice in the middle of a chaotic post-Trump political arena, famously penning the viral Teen Vogue op-ed “Donald Trump is Gaslighting America” just after Trump's election. Since the piece's publication, she's risen as a fresh voice in the millennial consciousness, often unafraid to challenge anyone who crosses her path … or her Twitter feed. In her new book, How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics, she argues that Trump's election sparked a political awakening in young people that does not seem to be waning anytime soon, and that it's up to them to fix our ailing political system. When Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, my heart dropped, and I wasn't alone. Millions of women who have marched, organized, and donated saw their civil rights being swept away from our current administration by the recommendation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Women's health is not the only issue in grave danger if Kavanaugh gets the seat. Immigration, LGTBQ rights, and almost every facet of American life will be affected. We're being told Kavanaugh is a foregone conclusion. What you will hear in this show is that IT IS NOT. But we need your help. Please listen to and share this episode featuring the Los Angeles stop on the Rise Up For Roe Tour. The arguments that this is the most important issue, and we can win are compelling. You'll hear from some incredible leaders and some of my personal heroes: @laurenduca @cecilerichards @alyssa_milano @jess_mc @importantmeagan @jesslivmo @naral Please share this episode on social media, and email me a voice memo with something YOU are enthusiastic about. Democrats release their memo, which supposedly completely rebuts Republican memo. I love these memos. How is it any different to communicate your talking points by memo versus press conference? Christopher Steele is a "trusted source?" Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel refuses to resign in spite of a litany of failures to recognize numerous warning signs of Nikolas Cruz. Says he's provided "amazing leadership." This school shooting illustrates numerous failures of government. What does it really mean to "arm our teachers?" Why shouldn't legal conceal carry permit holders be able to exercise their God-given Second Amendment right? MSNBC compares Trump's CPAC speech to Castro, Chavez, Ahmadinejad speeches. Total misrepresentation. Dictators don't take actions to limit government, reduce bureaucracy, cut taxes, empower people. Teen Vogue columnist Lauren Duca tweets that Billy Graham should "have fun in hell, b***h." The ever-so-tolerant far Left at it's finest.

Journalist/activist Lauren Duca talks with Recode’s Peter Kafka about the column she wrote for Teen Vogue that catapulted her into fame, and the ensuing interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that made her even more of a star. Duca’s original mega-viral essay, “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America,” is “still true” today, she says; it established her as a leading feminist critic of the Trump administration before he even took office. Since then, she has endured waves of backlash from the alt-right internet (and, occasionally, Carlson himself), and has had to think carefully about everything she posts and tweets — but Duca says the experience has made her “fireproof,” and her convictions are now “unshakeable.” Learn more about your ad choices. President Donald Trump’s attacks on the media persist while journalists continue to grapple with how to cover such a tumultuous presidency. Amidst the clamor, new voices in journalism have risen to the top, positioning themselves as political power players in a media-saturated world. Among these voices is Lauren Duca, an award-winning journalist at Teen Vogue. In December 2016, Duca penned an essay, “Donald Trump is Gaslighting America,” which argued that Trump relies on deceit to undermine the truth so his critics question their own judgment. The essay quickly went viral, generating more than one million views to date. Duca joins this episode of Politics & Polls to discuss her essay, her work at Teen Vogue and the future of journalism under the Trump administration.

So our last book was pretty heavy. So heavy, in fact, that we found it difficult to find substantive, meaningful ways to put its precepts into practice - but we find some anyway, because this is Try A New Thing™ and that's what you're here for. We talk about some of our problems with the book on reflection, ways we've talked politics and religion with family and friends, and our own moral foundations. Talking points include: Lauren Duca is amazing and Teen Vogue is on point, party conventions are the worst, we're not too big on purity. Also: we're having our very first contest for a copy of the first books we read! Listen to the end of the episode for info about how to enter to win all three books, shipped to you with a smile. Comments? Questions? Reach out to us at tryanewpodcast@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 925-5-TRY-NEW.
Everything is terrible! We read the news and...WOW! And talk to Teen Vogue writer, Lauren Duca.
This week’s theme is "first times"—first times doing butt stuff, first times seeing ourselves in literature, first times questioning religion, and first times accepting Beyoncé as our Lord and Saviour. We also get to talkin' about gay bars and steak houses (What's the difference??), the retribution of the Queen Bey's self-titled album, and (duh) how we lost our virginities. And it ain't pretty. Our dessert this week is the incomparable Lauren Duca, Teen Vogue writer and public enemy white male fascist trolls. The phrase “workplace safety” conjures images of factory floors or corny training videos that warn office workers against spilling hot coffee. But as work has begun to bleed into our personal and online lives, what it means to stay safe on the job has become murkier. On this week's Game Plan, Francesca and Becca talk to Lauren Duca, a freelance writer for outlets that include Teen Vogue. Duca's articles and TV appearances have made her a target of severe online harassment, so she must work while considering whether bigoted, violent e-mails and social media posts constitute legitimate threats or mere words. We wrestle with how—and whether—employers can look out for workers when the threats to employee safety are virtual.

Journalist Lauren Duca has found herself the target of some of the internet's absolute worst harassment. After an appearance on Fox News opposite Tucker Carlson went viral, Duca has emerged as one of the boldest voices fighting back against online trolling and harassment. We talk about what that's been like, and how she handles it on a daily basis. Note: This interview was conducted before Twitter suspended Martin Shkreli for harassing Duca.
